Chapter Twenty-Three: “I Feel Home”
The car ride home was a silent one. As Luka drove, he often gazed into the rear-view mirror at Abby as she watched their sleeping son. In the past three weeks, she hadn’t lost the dark bags under her eyes and she was still pale. She had lost the “baby weight” pretty quickly, Luka reasoned that it was because she hardly left Joe’s side to sleep or eat herself.
Her face was happy, but underneath Luka saw a deep sense of worry. The way Abby’s mouth rested was the most obvious inclination. Her tired eyes would open wide, the same way that Joe’s did right before he was about to cry. It was a look he had seen on her face many times before. He saw that face when Maggie came around and when her brother Eric was missing. He saw that look before a fight and moments before she was about to cry. He remembered that face best the day she told him she was pregnant with Joe. It was the look of insecurity, masked by a hint of happiness and subtle anxiousness. He smiled to himself. “That’s just Abby,” he thought to himself as he turned onto the street where his apartment was. Even through everything, she still had this deep sense of mystery about her. Everyday it seemed, he learned something new about her. Each moment they shared together, she would reveal a little more of herself to him. He knew it would take years for her to totally reveal herself to him. That’s what he loved most about her.
He shut off the engine and quickly got out of the car and opened the back door. He reached his hand out for Abby who stood up, absent minded. “I got him” Luka said to her. She simply nodded and walked up the front steps. Luka unbuckled the car seat and slowly lifted it. “Welcome home,” he whispered as the baby stirred. Abby opened the front door and looked at the quiet apartment. “Well, this is it,” she thought to herself. “After this moment, everything changes.” She heard Luka coming up the steps behind her. She looked at him and he gave her an encouraging smile. She waited for him to speak to her, to ask what was wrong, but he didn’t. Luka was loyal in that sense, in every sense really. He knew when she needed her space, her silence. She loved him more for it. Right now, she was trying to sort things out.
Luka took baby Joe on a tour of the apartment. “I know it’s not that big,” he said to the baby. “But I think you’ll like it here.” He smiled as he talked. “This is the living room, and this is mommy and daddy’s bedroom. And this, this is your room,” he said as he walked into the bright, yellow nursery. “Daddy decorated this for you,” he said. “Kako is it?” He said in Croatian. “How is it?” He waited for a moment as if he expected the baby to answer him. “That’s what I thought,” he said with a laugh.
Abby still stood by the front door. She sighed as she closed the door and walked into the apartment. She walked towards the nursery and stood in the doorway. Luka turned to her when he felt her presence. She forced a smile and turned to walk away. Luka took baby Joe out of his car seat and sat on the rocking chair with him. Abby walked out of the nursery and sat at the kitchen table. She put her head in her hands and closed her eyes. In the distance she heard the unfamiliar but soothing words of Luka, speaking Croatian to Joe.
Luka walked into the bedroom to find Abby reading in bed. She looked so exhausted that he didn’t know how she was still awake. He kissed the baby’s head as he laid him down in the basinet. He noticed Abby had moved it to his side of the bed. “Volim te,” he said to the baby. “I love you.”
He climbed into bed next to Abby and turned on his side to face her. He remained silent, and Abby didn’t speak. After a minute, she laid her book on the night stand and turned off the lamp. He watched as her tired head sunk into the pillow and she closed her eyes. His gaze remained fixed on Abby lying there. He waited, and then gently reached out and grabbed her hand, wrapping their fingers together. He heard her sigh and a moment later she opened her eyes. Still, he waited.
She hesitated before she spoke. “I….” she started. “Luka, I’m scared,” she said quietly. In the darkness, he smiled slightly. “I know,” he said softly. “These past four weeks have been overwhelming,” he started. “It’s okay to feel the way you do.” Abby turned to face him. “It’s just…,” Abby started and then hesitated. “For the past month, I’ve had a team people helping me take care of Joe. It’s almost as if they know him better then I do.” His eyes had adjusted to the darkness and he saw Abby’s eyes, shiny and filled with tears. She looked downward. “You are his mother, Abby,” he said to her. “He knows that.” She looked up. “In a week, you’ll be back to work,” she started. “Then we’ll be all alone.”
Luka touched Abby’s face and she closed her eyes. “You know I’ll be just a phone call away,” he said. “And you won’t be alone,” Luka started. “You’ll have each other.” Abby bit her lip. “Luka, I waited for so long for this moment, to have him home.. with me. Now here he is and I can’t get it together. I’m scared to be alone with my son,” she said. “What’s wrong with me?” Luka put his arm around Abby’s neck and pulled her in close to his chest. “Nothing,” he said as he kissed her hair. “It’s okay to be scared. You’re a new mother, every new mother is scared. I’m scared too,” he said quietly.
She looked up at him. “It’s been a long time since I’ve done this,” Luka said. “I was so scared before Joe was born and while he was sick. I looked at him and I saw my children, in Croatia. I felt helpless, like I did when I lost them. I was there by Joe’s side, but I couldn’t do a thing to make him better, to make him stronger. That was the worst part.”
Luka paused for a minute and Abby was silent. “I felt so helpless, but then I held him. Finally, I held him and I felt that same feeling I felt the first time I held my son and daughter before. And for that moment, I wasn’t scared. He was in my arms, and he was safe. I could protect him.” Abby moved closed to Luka. “You were right, Abby,” he said, looking at her. “Seeing him, holding, smelling him…hearing him cry, it brought so much back to me. It brought back so many happy memories and when I see our son, and when I hold him….I forget all the pain and the suffering that my children endured. I only remember the happiness.”
Abby sat up and looked into Luka’s eyes. His kind, gentle eyes were filled with tears. “The only thing that scares me is time,” he said to her. “Every child is a different person, a new learning experience,” he started. “I’m scared for the moment Joe outlives my son. In that moment, everything will be new. I never saw my children grow. This time, I will.” Abby smiled at him. “Well, then we’ll learn together,” she said. He nodded. “I love you, Luka,” Abby said. She loved the way she felt when she said those words. “I love you and you saved me. You never gave up on me and I know you never will. We’ll always have each other. I’ll always be here. We’re in this together, always.” She touched his face. “That’s what gets me through,” Abby said as she gently kissed his lips and lowered her head to his chest. “I love you too,” he said as he stroked her hair. “Always.” Abby closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep, comforted by the beating of Luka’s heart, full of love.

Chapter Twenty-Three: “Uncertainty”
Luka saw the familiar looking box lying on a shelf in Joe’s closet. He walked over and pulled it out, smiling at its contents. The silky, white baptismal gown was still lying neatly and untouched in the box. He lifted it out and held it close. Luka looked over at his son, sleeping peacefully in his swing. “You are growing up too fast,” he said quietly as he sat down in the leather chair next to Joe’s swing. He put the box on the seat next to him and rested his chin on the cool arm of the love seat. The gentle rocking sound of the swing was the only noise he heard in the quiet apartment. Abby was out to pick up a few things and to clear her head.
He shifted slightly in his seat and the box fell to the floor with a crash. He clinched his teeth together as he looked over at Joe, but the baby didn’t stir. Luka scooped up the box which had landed upside-down and discovered the card Abby had written to him lying on the floor. He re-read her words out loud:
Luka, I hope this gift touches your heart the way you have touched mine. I am so happy we are doing this together. I couldn’t imagine my life without you, and although I haven’t had the courage to say it, I hope you know how much I love you. -Abby
Luka sighed as he slouched in the chair and laid his head down. “I wish I felt like we were in this together,” Luka mumbled. They brought baby Joe home two weeks ago and ever since then, Abby began to distance herself. The silent car ride home from the hospital, and moving Joe’s cradle to Luka’s side of the bed were just the beginning of it all. Most of the time, Luka was the one to respond to Joe’s cries during the night, while Abby lie distant in bed. He had found Abby with Joe on several occasions, frustrated and on the verge of tears. “He just won’t stop crying, Luka,” she would say to him. “I don’t think he likes me.”
He remembered Abby’s past and everything she had to overcome. He knew that growing up without a loving and supportive family probably had a lot to do with why Abby was the way she was. He had seen Abby at her lowest lows, but even then, she had still managed to still be Abby. This time it was different. That’s what scared him the most.
Luka looked at his watch. Abby had been gone for almost two hours. He was tired and lonely, but mostly worried. He had tried to talk to her, but nothing he said seemed to get through. He was supposed to go back to work two days ago, but put it off a little longer. “Is everything okay, Luka?” Kerry had asked. “The baby is fine,” he had responded. Kerry shook her head. “That’s not what I meant,” she said with a smile. “How is Abby?” She’d asked. “I don’t know, Kerry. I have no idea.” Dr. Weaver had been understanding. “Sort things out, Luka,” she said. “We are short staffed here, so come back as soon as you can, okay? And take care of Abby, and yourself.”
Monday was the deadline he had set for himself. He had three days to sort things out with Abby. “Well, if I know your mother, three days is not going to cut it,” he said to baby Joe. “I think I may need some help.” Luka stood up from his seat and walked to the kitchen table. He opened up the blue phone book and grabbed the phone. He dialed and sat down backwards on a kitchen chair. After a few rings, he heard a woman’s voice on the other end. “Maggie,” he started. “It’s Luka.” Immediately, she began to panic. “Luka? Is everything okay? The baby?” Maggie said. Luka reassured her. “No, no, Maggie, the baby is fine. Joe is fine. He’s really getting big.” He paused. “It’s Abby.” “Abby?” Maggie questioned. “She doesn’t know your calling me, does she?” Luka laughed. “Well, you know Abby,” he said to her. “When should I come?” Maggie asked, almost instantly. Luka hesitated. He was surprised at how quickly Maggie offered to come to Abby’s rescue. “I have to go back to work Monday,” he said. “Well, then. I’ll see you Sunday evening.”
Luka held the phone in his hand until he heard the dial tone on the other end. He bit his lip. "What did I just do?" He thought to himself. In the past, it seemed like Abby was most vulnerable when her mother was around. He reasoned with himself. "Well, she has been on her meds for a while now..and she seems to be more than okay," he thought. He hung up the phone, dejected. From the nursery, he heard Joe's gentle whimpering. He stood up quickly, hoping to get to the baby before he really began to cry. "I'm coming, buddy!" He called into the other room. He quickly scooped up the baby and almost instantly, his whimpering stopped. "Daddy's here," he said as he kissed Joe's head. He sat in the rocker and played with Joe's tiny feet. "I hope Daddy did the right thing," he said to Joe. "I just...don't know what else to do." A moment later, Luka heard the jiggling of keys and the front door opening. A second later, it closed. Silence.

Chapter Twenty-Five: “Run Baby Run”
Abby hand-washed baby bottles in the sink, that was her thing to do when something was bothering her. It was 8 o’clock on Sunday night. She looked over at Joe sleeping in his swing and Luka watching TV on the couch. She brushed her hair behind her ear and sighed. It was their last day together before Luka went back to work, and they had barely spoken a word to each other. Abby hated the awkward silence more than almost anything, but she didn’t know what to say. She just felt so…out of it.
Luka stood up from the couch and walked towards the kitchen. He took a cup from the counter and poured some orange juice. Abby looked at him, and waited for herself to smile. Why did it take so long for her to smile these days? Her eyes met Luka’s. “Don’t worry, I’ll wash it,” Luka said to her. He waited for a second for a response, but nothing came from her lips. “Say something!” She thought to herself, but still there was silence.
Luka went and sat back down on the couch. Then he turned off the TV. “Are you hungry?” Luka said, turning to look at her. Abby grabbed a towel and dried her soapy hands. “A little,” she said as she sat down on the couch next to him. “Pizza?” He asked. She nodded. “I’ll order,” he said, smiling slightly and then he picked up the phone. He dialed the number by heart. Luka ordered and then hung up the phone. “They said it will be a half-hour,” he said to Abby. She nodded, still looking ahead. “We never cook anymore,” Abby said, still looking ahead. Luka sighed. “There are a lot of things we don’t do anymore,” he said, as he passed one of Joe’s toys between his hands.
Finally, Abby looked at him. “I don’t know what to say, Luka,” she said, her tone changing. He looked up at her. “I don’t know what to do, Abby,” he started. “I can’t help you if you don’t tell me what’s bothering you.” Abby leaned forward and put her head into her hands. “I know I’m a bitch,” Abby said. Luka stood up. “Abby, I never said you were a bitch,” he said. “But you think it, don’t you?” She said, her voice getting louder. “Abby,” Luka said, nodding towards the sleeping baby. “You’ll wake him.” Abby shook her head. “And then he’ll cry, I know. He’ll cry and I won’t be able to help him” Luka walked towards her. “Abby, you know that’s not true,” he said, moving closer. Abby turned her back. “Luka, just don’t!” Luka wanted to yell. He wanted to scream, but his bit his lip. “Damn it, Abby!” He yelled, but trying to whisper. “Just tell me what’s wrong!” Abby spun around to face him. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me!” She yelled. “Abby is a basket care, everyone knows it, Luka! You know it too. You had your chance to run!” Luka glared at her. “I’m not running Abby! Don’t you see that by now?” Luka yelled back. Abby rubbed her teary face. “You say that now. Oh sure, now you’re a saint. Now you are the greatest father in the world. But what happens if something is wrong with the baby? Huh? What happens if I turn into my mother? Will you run then?” Luka put his hands on the back of his head and pulled his hair. “No, Abby, I won’t run!” Luka yelled.
Tears came streaming down her face as she stood there and then, Joe began to cry. Luka stood between them, frozen, not knowing who to comfort first. Then there was a knock at the door. Abby grabbed money from her wallet and stormed towards the door as Luka cradled the baby in his arms. Abby opened the door and her jaw dropped when she saw Maggie standing in front of her. She turned and glared at Luka. “You called my mother?” She said to him. “Abby, I didn’t know what to do,” he said as he stood rocking the crying baby. A flood of emotions hit Abby all at once. She was angry, hurt and afraid. Her chest felt as if it was going to explode and her burning lungs needed air. She turned towards the door and ran.
“Run Baby Run” By Sheryl Crow
She was born in November 1963 The day Aldous Huxley died And her mama believed That every man could be free So her mama got high, high, high And her daddy marched on Birmingham Singing mighty protest songs And he pictured all the places That he knew that she belonged But he failed and taught her young The only thing she's need to carry on He taught her how to
Run baby run baby run baby run Baby run
Past the arms of the familiar And their talk of better days To the comfort of the strangers Slipping out before they say so long Baby loves to run
She counts out all her money In the taxi on the way to meet her plane Stares hopeful out the window At the workers fighting Through the pouring rain She's searching through the stations For an unfamiliar song And she's pictures all the places Where she knows she still belongs And she smiles the secret smile Because she knows exactly how To carry on
So run baby run baby run baby run Baby run
From the old familiar faces and Their old familiar ways To the comfort of the strangers Slipping out before they say So long Baby loves to run

Chapter Twenty-Six: “The Chase”
Abby ran out of the apartment, but the humid summer air did little to comfort her. Her lungs continued to burn as she ran down the street and around the corner. Out of shape and out of breath, Abby was forced to stop.
Baby Joe continued to cry. Maggie held up her hand to Luka as he quickly walked towards the door to follow Abby. “Where is the number of that friend of Abby’s? The one who is going to be Joe’s godmother.” Maggie said to him. Luka looked at her confused. “Neela?” He asked. Maggie nodded. “Does she know where all of Joe’s things are?” Maggie asked again. Luka nodded, even more confused. “I’ll call her and ask her to come stay with me and the baby,” she said to him. He understood. “Thank you,” he said to her. “Do you know where she’s going?” Maggie called as Luka grabbed his keys front the table by the door. “I think I have an idea,” he called back. Luka’s hands were shaking as he turned the keys in the ignition of his dark blue 1994 Volvo. The old car’s engine sputtered but thankfully started. He drove to the place where he prayed that he’d find Abby.
“Safe and Sound” By Sheryl Crow
Maybe this is forever Forever fades away Like a rocket ascending into space Could you not be sad Could you not break down After all I won't let go
Until you're safe and sound Until you're safe and sound
There's beauty in release There's no one left to please But you and me I don't blame you for quitting I know you really try If only you could hang on through the night I don't want to be lonely I don't want to be scared All our friends are waiting there
Until your safe and sound
Feel like I could've held on Feel like I could've let go Feel like I could've helped you Feel like I could've changed you Feel like I could've held you Feel like I could've hurt you Feel like I was a stranger Feel like I was an angel Feel like I was a hero Feel like I was a zero Feel like I could have changed you Feel like I could have healed you Feel like I could have saved you Feel like I should've heard you Feel like I could have moved you Feel like I could have changed you Feel like I could have healed you Feel like I should've told you Feel like I could have loved you Feel like I really loved you Feel like I could've saved you
Abby was still out of breath when she reached her old apartment. She’d panicked and grabbed the keys accidentally, but now she was glad that she did. As she walked up the steps, she realized just how long it had been since she’d even stepped foot in her apartment. Even though she’d been living at Luka’s apartment, she’d kept renting this one. “How typical of me,” Abby thought to herself. “Insecure Abby,” she mumbled out loud.
The apartment was dark and stuffy and the stagnant air hit Abby instantly as she stepped inside. She flipped on light and stood, frozen by the front door. She took in everything around her. Had it really been that long since she’d been here? Everything was exactly how she’d left it, but somehow felt vacant. It was as if she’d been kidnapped and forced to start a brand new life, abandoning her former one. “Well, that’s kind of how it was,” she thought to herself. The last time she’d stepped foot in here was a few days before Joe was born. Everything had happened so quickly, so dramatically; the shooting, the injury, Joe’s struggle for survival. Her heart stopped at the thought of her son. “Oh my God,” she said to herself as she plopped down on the couch. She had forgotten that she’d left the front door open.
Everything hit her at once and she broke down into deep sobs. Had she really just walked out on her own son? And what about Luka? She made him promise and swear over and over that they were in this together. He swore to her that he loved her and that he’d never leave. But still, that hadn’t been enough. She pushed and pushed, but he never budged. He never ever ran. She’d been the weak one. She was the one who ran away.
Abby was startled by a single, quiet knock at the front door. She turned around to find Luka standing there. His face looked tired and worried and his eyes were glassy. He didn’t waste any time and Abby could tell by the tone of his voice that he was still hurt and angry. “I don’t run, Abby,” he said, still standing by the door. “I don’t run unless I’m chasing after you.” His face was serious and he kept his eyes locked with Abby’s. “I may be a lot of things, but I’m not a coward,” he continued. “I watched my children die in Croatia….my wife….my family…the people I loved most in this world die in front of my eyes. Don’t you think I wanted to run then, Abby? Instead of holding my child and watching the three of them die in front of my eyes, knowing that I could do nothing to save them.” Abby watched as tears began to stream down Luka’s cheeks. “Do you know how many times I’ve replayed that day in my head? Every single damn day! I replayed it every day until I met you!” Luka paused, his eyes still fixed on Abby. “I lost my family and my faith and for some god forsaken reason, I found you…I fell in love with you. I lost you once, and I tried to run. I tried and I failed. When I found you again, I told myself I wasn’t going to let you go, not ever. And damn it, here I am.”
He walked and stood in front of Abby, his hand on his forehead. “Sometimes, Abby….you are impossible. We promised to do this together. I swore to you that I would never leave. I asked you to marry me. I’m loyal to you and our son. I put up with it all. And then you run away and what do I do? Maybe I should give up. Sometimes it seems like that’s what you want. You give me every reason not to love you, but guess what? I still do! I didn’t run that day in Croatia because I loved them. We have a family now….a son, and I love him so much, Abby. So keep pushing, Abby. Push all you want. But no matter how many punches you throw at me, I’ll still love you.” Abby stood, her eyes locked with Luka’s. Their faces were close together and Luka spoke once more in a shaky whisper. “The only place I’ll ever run is to chase after you.” Abby threw herself into Luka’s chest. “I’m sorry sorry, Luka,” Abby said. “I’m so, so sorry.”

Chapter Twenty-Seven: “Lost and Found”
Abby’s head rested on Luka’s lap. They say silently as he stroked her hair. The tears had finally stopped. After some time, Abby got the courage to speak. “I’ve spent my whole life afraid,” she said, still with her head in Luka’s lap. “I spent my whole life trying to run away from everything.” Abby sat up and looked at Luka. “Do you know why I wanted to become a doctor?” She asked him, not waiting for an answer. “I became a doctor to make some sort of statement…to prove to the world that I wasn’t like them, that I wasn’t a coward like my father, and that I wouldn’t be crazy like Eric or a bad mother like Maggie. And look at me, look at me! I’ve become all the things I tried my whole life not to be.” Luka shook his head. “You’re not any of those things,” he said to her. “You carry a lot of baggage, Abby. You’re scarred and a little frayed at the ends, but you’re not broken.” Abby shook her head. “Luka, you don’t have to…you know….do that.” Luka held his finger to her lips. “You’ve been through a lot in these past few months Abby, more than anyone should have to go through. But you’ve proven everything you’ve wanted to your whole life because of it.” Abby looked at him confused. “Look,” he started. “When you decided to have a baby with me, you did something you’ve been afraid of all your life, so you are not a coward. And when you looked at me the day Joe was born and told me that the baby comes first…that right there says you are a good mother. And as far as being crazy…well…we all have our moments, he laughed gently. But you will never be like them.” Abby looked at him in astonishment. “After everything…all of this….how can you even say those things to me?” Abby asked. “I love you, so it’s a rule that I have to see the good in you,” he said to her. With those words, he smiled and Abby heart stopped. “I think I just fell in love with you all over again,” she said to him. He kissed her forehead. “Everything…has just been building up since I was a little girl,” Abby said. “Sometimes it’s okay to run…to breath…you aren’t running away Abby. I know that.”
Luka handed Abby the phone. “Hi, Abby,” Maggie voice said on the other end. “How’d you know it was me?” Abby asked. Maggie laughed. “Only a daughter would call her mother at 3am.” Abby laughed. “How’s the baby?” Maggie sighed. “He’s beautiful…and sleeping. Neela is here with me. We’ve been catching up.” Abby smiled. “That’s good, Mom.” “Why don’t you two spend the night there?” Maggie said. Luka’s ear was pressed to the phone. “Yeah, it is kind of late,” Abby said with a laugh as Luka winked at her. “Uh, Mom?” Abby chimed in. “I’m sorry.” Maggie was silent for a moment. “Oh Abby,” she said. “I’ve done enough terrible things to your life, don’t you worry about it! Now, get some sleep.” “Goodnight, Mom,” Abby said as she hung up the phone. “I love you.” “I love you too, Abby,” her mother said.
Abby turned around to find Luka taking off his shirt. “What?” He said, looking at her and smiling. “There’s not air conditioner and its hot!” Abby laughed. “Oh, that’s it? I thought you were expecting some hot make up sex in the shower.” Luka’s mouth opened. “Sex? What is that? It’s been so long I can barely remember,” he said, smirking. “Oh, real funny!” Abby said, throwing a pillow at him. She walked over to him and he put his arms around her waste. Abby felt the gentle stroking of his fingers along her spine. “Has it really been that long?” She asked, somewhat shocked and playful. “Uh, yeah,” Luka laughed as Abby began unbuckling his belt. “I can’t even remember that last time.” Abby pulled Luka and brought his head down low and then she kissed him deeply. “Well then,” she said playfully. “I guess I’ll just have to refresh your memory.”
Luka grinned as Abby kissed his neck and then quickly pulled his belt out of his pants. Then she ran towards the bathroom. “Why are you running?” Luka asked, laughing. “Only because I know you’ll chase after me.” Luka shook his head as he started running after Abby. She had just turned the shower on when he reached the bathroom. “You were stealing my clothes, I had no choice,” Luka laughed. Abby rolled her eyes. “Luka, you are so full of….” Luka stopped her final words by picking her up and kissing her. He carried her into the shower and closed the glass sliding door. Her arms were wrapped around his back as he kissed her neck. Abby let out a little moan a few seconds later. Luka smiled. “I’m full of what?” He whispered playfully in her ear. “Ohhh, Luka,” she groaned. “Shut up and kiss me!”
They stayed in the shower for a long time. When they were done, they got out and Luka wrapped a towel around both him and Abby. “I should invite your mother over more often,” Luka laughed. Abby smiled. “How was that?” Abby asked, still smiling. “Well, sex is back in my short term memory,” Luka grinned. “Your short term memory?” Abby asked. “Let’s just see about that!” She said, pulling Luka in close to her again. His mouth opened, but then he smiled. “Yes, Maggie needs to come visit A LOT more often!” Luka yelled at they stumbled onto the bed.
