I hope Abby won't have a postnatal depression, but protective Luka is here to cope with everything. Can't wait for the next chapter.

Soooooooo sorry for the lack of updates. Haven't been home much! Anyhoo, here's the next installement...
Abby pushed the cart down the aisle and quickly pulled several jars of baby food off the shelf. Luka was home with the baby and Abby was grateful for the respite. The last few weeks had been beyond difficult. Things hadn’t gotten any better with Joe and she found herself crying right along with him. Luka had taken off a few more weeks from work, but eventually he had to go back. Abby herself was due back at the hospital in another week, and as much as she hated to admit it, she couldn’t wait. Her child seemed to hate her and it was as if all her fears about being a mother had come true. She was lousy at it. Abby let out a sigh and continued down the aisle and went in search of toilet paper.
She passed the liquor aisle and stopped. She hadn’t felt the urge to drink in so long, but right now…she just felt…in need. Abby bit her bottom lip and slowly turned her cart down the aisle. The brightly colored bottles of rum, tequila, vodka and wine seemed to smile at her as she passed them. She stopped in front of the gin. With trembling fingers, she reached out and slid her favorite brand towards her, the heft of the bottle like a lead ball in her hands. She turned the bottle over in her hands, thinking about what it would be like to take that first sip, to feel that burning sensation as the liquid snaked down her throat. Clenching her jaw, Abby gently placed the bottle in the basket and continued her shopping. ************** Abby was sitting in the car, holding the bottle, contemplating whether or not to open it. She placed it in her lap and looked out the window at Lake Michigan. Her cell phone rang from somewhere at the bottom of her purse and she hurriedly plucked it out of her bag. It was Luka.
“Hi,” she said a little too brightly.
“Hey, did you get lost on the way back?”
“Uh, no, I just had a few other errands to run,” Abby said as looked down at the bottle in front of her. “I should be home soon.”
“Joe wants to say hi,” Luka said and Abby could hear her son gurgle into the phone. She closed her eyes and felt a tear begin to squeeze from the corner. “Hi baby,” she whispered. “Mommy will be home soon.”
Luka got back on the phone. “We’ll see you in a bit.” Luka paused. “We love you.”
Abby’s tears were coming full force now. “Bye,” she said before she closed the phone. Wiping her eyes, Abby flung her door open and grabbed the bottle of gin. She ran to the edge of the lake and unscrewed the top and poured it all into the water. What the hell had she been thinking? She couldn’t throw her life away like this. She wouldn’t. Wiping her eyes, she walked back to the car and drove home through a haze of tears. When she arrived, she pulled her groceries out of the back and came inside to find Luka playing on the floor with Joe. He looked up when she came in and smiled.
“Hey. We were getting worried about you.”
Abby dropped her bags and took a deep breath.
“I bought a bottle of gin today at the store because I wanted a drink.”
Luka’s smile faded from his face as he looked back down at Joe.
“Did you?” he asked quietly.
Abby shook her head.
“No. But, I…I just feel so helpless these days, Luka and I’m…I’m scared.”
Luka jiggled Joe’s foot.
“What now?”
Abby pursed her lips. “There’s a meeting at St. Anne’s in an hour and…I’m gonna go.”
Luka nodded his head thoughtfully as he rubbed the baby’s stomach.
“Ok.”
“Are you mad?”
Luka looked up at Abby.
“Why would I be mad?”
“I don’t know Luka, because I came really close to taking a drink today, and I could’ve been alone with the baby and something could’ve happened--”
“But you didn’t, and you weren’t and nothing did.”
Abby let out a breath.
“How do you do that?"
"What?"
"Stay so calm about everything?”
Luka shrugged.
“One of us has to, right?”
Abby couldn’t help it. She burst out laughing and it wasn’t long before Luka was too. She went over and joined them on the floor, and tickled Joe’s stomach, who giggled.
“You, I think that’s the first time he’s ever done that with me. Laughed I mean.”
“You don’t have to be so hard on yourself, Abby. Just let things happen in their own time.”
Abby leaned her head against Luka’s shoulder and he slipped his hand around her waist and kissed her forehead. They sat like that for a few moments, just being with each other and their son.
“Luka?”
“Yea?”
“I don’t know what I would do without you and Joe.”
“We don’t know what we would do without you.”
To be continued….
