OMG, you freaked me out!! I really thought that Abby was "falling off the wagon", as TPTB suggested!( hate them!). But the passage when she is opening up to Luka is very moving, and I hope it'll really help her that Luka never blames her and understands her fears. You write it beautifully. Thank you!

That was one amazing update!
I was so scared that Abby was going to drink that gin. But she did the right thing in telling Luka what she had so nearly done.
Very emotional and very very well written.

Abby swirled the water in the baby tub around to make sure it was the right temperature. She shook the excess water off her hand and went into the nursery. Joe was gurgling softly in his crib and Abby smiled as she picked him.
"Are you ready for your bath?" she asked, her voice pitching upward. "Are you ready for your bath?" she queried again, bouncing the baby. Joe laughed and Abby joined in. Doing a little dance with the baby, Abby sailed into the bathroom and got Joe ready for the tub.
Joe was six months now and finally, Abby felt like she had a handle on this whole mommy thing. Not that it had been easy; not by a long shot. She’d almost had that tumble off the wagon and it terrified her beyond all reason. She started going to meetings again and sought out a shrink to help her process all the stuff she was going through. Luka, of course, had been amazing through the whole thing, holding her while she cried and reassuring her they would cross this bridge together. And Joe. Her baby. Her son. She still couldn’t believe she had a child. She could have never imagined how much love she would feel for her little one. Abby’s confidence in her abilities as a mother was growing each day and it blew her away how right it all felt. Joe splashed the water, which jumped out of the tub and pelted her face. She giggled.
“Are you having too much fun in there?” she asked. His response was to splash more water at her and she laughingly rinsed and toweled him off. After she got him dressed, they slowly sat down in the rocking chair and stayed there until Joe fell asleep. ****************** Abby spooned some more Cheerios into her mouth and turned up the volume on the TV slightly. She heard Luka’s key turn in the lock and she twisted around to greet him.
“Hi,” she said, munching on Cheerios.
“Hi yourself.” He came over and bent down to give her a kiss before plopping wearily down next to her. He cocked his eyebrows in the direction of her cereal bowl. “The dinner of champions?”
Abby shrugged. “I wasn’t all that hungry.”
“You should have let me make you something.”
Abby laced her fingers through Luka’s thick black hair with her free hand. “I wasn’t sure what time you’d be home.” She looked at him slyly. “I could make you something.”
Luka laughed. “No thanks.”
“Oh, come on! I’m not…that bad.”
Luka gave her a knowing look and Abby couldn’t help but laugh.
“Ok, ok. I’m a lousy cook.”
Luka kissed the tip of Abby’s nose. “But, you’re great at so many other things.”
Abby took another spoonful of Cheerios unable to keep the smile from her face.
“How long has Joe been asleep?”
“About two hours, so he should be waking up any minute.”
As if he knew his parents were talking about him, Joe wailed from the other room. Luka popped up off the couch and headed straight for his son. Abby could only shake her head. If she was in love with Joe, Luka was practically a slave for that baby. It was as if Joe had healed both of them. Joe was resting his head on Luka’s shoulder, content now that he was in his father’s arms. Luka headed to the kitchen, grabbed a bottle out of the fridge and plopped it on top of the bottle warmer. Abby brought her empty bowl into the kitchen and rinsed it out in the sink before she rubbed Joe’s chubby little cheek.
“I had a meeting with Kerry today,” Luka said.
“Oh, yea? What about?”
Luka bounced Joe a little.
“She wants me to throw my cap in the ring for Chief.”
“Hat.”
“What?”
“It’s throw your hat in the ring. Not cap.” Luka rolled his eyes and then Abby felt bad, realizing she hadn’t even asked him about it. “Oh, God, Luka, I’m sorry. That’s awesome news. Isn’t it?”
“Yea, yea. Nice raise in pay. Could maybe really make some changes in the ER…”
Abby folded her arms across her chest and looked at Luka proudly.
“You’d be really great,” she said sincerely.
Luka smiled shyly. “You think?”
“Absolutely. People already have a tremendous amount of respect for you. They really look up to you.” Abby went over to the warmer to check the bottle. “Besides, it might be kind of cool being married to the Chief of the ER.”
As soon as the words were out of her mouth, Abby wished she could stuff them back inside. They’d never talked about marriage. Abby didn’t think she’d ever get married again, though she wasn’t sure about how Luka felt on the subject.
“What?”
“What?” Abby said, hoping that maybe he hadn’t heard the word married slip from her lips.
Luka walked around until he and Abby were facing each other. “Do you want to get married?”
Abby started fidgeting and tried to pluck the bottle from the warmer, but only succeeded in dropping it on the floor.
“Damn.” She bent down to pick it up and quickly ran the nipple under some hot water. Luka bounced Joe again and waited for Abby to look at him.
Abby handed Luka the bottle and he gently switched Joe around until he was cradling him and the bottle was firmly in the baby’s mouth.
“I…I don’t know if I want to get married. I’ve never even thought about it.”
“Well, you must have since you brought it up.”
Abby bit her bottom lip. "Ok. Maybe." She looked down. “Do you…ever…think about it?”
Luka nodded shyly. “Yea,” he said softly. “I do.”

SO...very nice! I like the way Abby brought up the marriage thing. I think that is the way they will go on the show as well. Are you channeling the writers by any chance???

Luka came up behind Abby and slipped one hand around her waist and the other around her eyes.
“Uhhh, let me guess…Brad Pitt?”
Luka nuzzled Abby’s neck, and she giggled in response.
“Ok, let me try again…Matthew McConaughey?
Luka squeezed Abby playfully around the waist and she laughed.
“Oh, oh, oh, I know…it’s the REAL ‘sexiest man alive.”
Luka spun Abby around to face him and she threw her arms around him and they stood there staring at each other, neither of them able to keep the absolutely goofy grins off their faces.
“I was wondering how many guesses you would need,” Luka said as he went to kiss Abby.
“I just like to give you a hard time,” Abby murmured before they fell into a slow sweet kiss.
They reluctantly pulled apart and Abby rested her cheek on Luka’s chest.
“So where are we going again?”
“We haven’t really had a night out since the baby was born…so I thought it might be nice to have a nice quiet dinner somewhere. I made reservations at the Signature Room.”
“Do you know in all the years I’ve lived in Chicago, I’ve never been?”
“The view is amazing.”
Abby leaned back and looked at Luka.
“And how many times have you been?”
Luka grinned. “Once, just once.”
“Oh yea? What’s her name?”
Luka rubbed Abby’s shoulder. “My cousin brought me when I first came to Chicago.”
“Well…I guess that’s,” Abby winked at Luka, who laughed and drew her into another kiss.
“Reservation’s at 8.”
Abby nodded. “I’ll be ready.”
Luka gave her another quick peck and a smile before he headed back inside. Abby watched him walk away, her heart leaping with each step he took. She held her hand over her chest to keep it from skipping right out of her chest. ******************** It’s been said the best views of Chicago aren’t from the skydeck of the Sears Tower, but rather the Signature Room of the John Hancock. When Abby and Luka were being led to their table, Abby felt her breath stop as she surveyed the view of the city in front of her. The lights of the buildings seemed to wink at her and the magnificent sweep of Lake Michigan’s shore looked majestic from 95 stories up. She clutched Luka’s arm.
“Oh, my God,” she gasped softly. “It’s…I don’t even have words.”
Luka took Abby’s elbow and gently guided her to their table.
“Pretty cool, huh?” he asked as he pulled out her chair. He went around to his seat and their waiter appeared almost instantly with a bottle of sparkling cider, which he poured into their wine glasses. Luka raised his glass and Abby followed.
“To us,” he said simply. “You, me and our son.”
Abby smiled. “To us,” she whispered. They both sipped and Abby put down her glass and looked at Luka.
“I miss him,” she said.
Luka chuckled.
“Me too.”
“Can we call him? I mean, just too see how he is?”
Luka smiled coyly and pulled out his cell phone. Abby bit her bottom lip and opened the phone, only to see there was no reception.
“I’m just…I’m gonna go and find a payphone,” Abby said, scooting her chair back from the table. Luka shook his head laughing. He knew Abby wouldn’t be able to go more than a few minutes without checking in with Neela, who was babysitting.
“Take your time,” he said softly. Abby ran around and gave Luka a quick kiss before she ran off in search of a phone.
When Abby came back, she and Luka proceeded to have their first night out alone. They talked about Joe, work and Joe again. After the meal, the waiter brought out one more plate covered by a silver dome. Abby shook her head and patted her stomach.
“Oh…no, I am stuffed after that meal. Couldn’t eat another thing.”
The waiter lowered the plate down in front of Abby and removed the silver lid with flourish.
“I don’t think this is something you should eat,” Luka said as he watched Abby’s face for a reaction. She gasped softly and her hands flew to her mouth as it sank in that a little black velvet box was in front of her. The waiter retreated and Luka reached over, picked up the box before he rose to walk over to her. He came down on one knee and opened the box.
“I know we haven’t really talked about this, and I know you said you didn’t think you’d ever get married again, but…I love you, Abby. And…I want us to be married. I want to marry you.” Luka took a deep breath and looked deep into Abby’s eyes. “Abby…will you marry me?”
Abby shook her head, in awe over this whole evening. Luka’s face fell when he thought she was saying no. Laughing, Abby grabbed Luka’s face in her hands and kissed him squarely on the mouth.
“Yes, Luka,” she said, pulling away. “Yes, I will marry you.”
Relief broke over Luka’s features and he slipped the ring on Abby’s finger, who laughed again and wiped away her tears. Luka swept Abby into a fierce embrace and Abby herself hung on for dear life.
“I love you, Luka.”
