I'm really, really sorry that this has taken so long, but I've been really busy with schoolwork and every other spare minute I've had has been taken up by a family project that I've been working on, but that's almost sorted now, just need to see what my grandparents think tomorrow and hopefully that'll be one less thing that I need to do. I'm also in the middle of assessments and mock exams, so my mind has kind of been elsewhere. Anyway, I'd just like to warn you that some of this might not flow properly, and that's because I've been writing a bit here and a bit there for the last couple of weeks. I'll stop rambling now, enjoy! Charlotte x
The journey up back up to the ICU was the longest of Abby’s life. She was tired, she felt numb, and her limbs felt heavy. However, despite all of this, she felt relieved that Kerry had managed to talk her into being allowed to sit with Luka in the ICU. She was also glad, as well as grateful, that Kerry had understood and not made any comments about her and Luka being together so soon after Carter had left her.
She was suddenly aware that they had stopped. She looked up, realising quickly that they had reached the ICU. She hadn’t noticed that she was shaking until Kerry placed her hands on her shoulders and guided her to a chair. She allowed herself to be sat down before her knees gave way, and just about registered Kerry crouching in front of her,
“Abby?” There was obvious concern in Kerry’s voice, “Are you ok?”
Abby took a deep breath and tried to control her anxiety; she needed to be strong now, for Luka’s sake. If she fell apart now, she wouldn’t be helping him at all, and they probably wouldn’t let her in anyway. She managed to calm herself before turning back to Kerry and nodding slowly,
“I’m ok now,” She whispered and made to stand up again, but Kerry kept her hand on her shoulder, preventing her from standing too quickly,
“Let’s take it slow,” She explained when Abby threw her a look,
Abby nodded and allowed Kerry to help her up and guide her through into Luka’s ICU room. She didn’t know what to expect; she hadn’t seen him since he had been brought in, and she feared the state that he would be in.
Kerry continued to support her until she was comfortably seated next to the bed, before squeezing her hand and turning to walk away,
“Kerry, wait!” She turned around again to see Abby looking back at her, “I know that I’ve already said this a few times today, but I feel that I need to say it again, thank you so much!”
“It’s ok Abby, I really hope that he gets through this, and I’ll be back to check on you both later on. Oh, and the doctor shouldn’t be bothering you again, though if he does I’ll be downstairs,”
“Thank you Kerry, you’ve been great tonight,” Abby replied, and Kerry smiled before turning once again, and leaving the room.
She turned back to the bed, taking in the sight before her eyes. Luka was lying on the bed before her looking so familiar, and yet so different at the same time; the tubes, wires and machines surrounding him making him seem so foreign, she had never seen him like this before. So vulnerable.
She reached out her hand, entwining his fingers with her own. Once again she allowed herself to cry; for herself, for him. After a while she looked back at his face before standing and walking over to the window. The sun was rising, casting shadows and painting the sky a beautiful mixture of reds, pinks, oranges and yellows. She felt herself yawn and decided to sit back down. She picked his hand up again and before she even knew what was happening, she was fast asleep, with her head resting on the bed next to their intertwined hands.

Downstairs in the ER, Kerry had called everyone together once the people running the day shift had arrived, and before the people who had run the night shift went home. Some of them were muttering about what circumstances could have brought Kerry to need to talk to them all, though obviously the ones who had been there since before Luka had been brought in knew what had happened, but they didn’t know anything else,
“Ok, listen up everybody!” Kerry shouted over the chatter, and waited for the noise to quieten down before she spoke again, “Now what I have to tell you is very important, and I need your complete attention; I don’t really want to have to repeat myself,” ‘It’ll be bad enough saying it once’ she finished in her head,
“What exactly is going on here Dr Weaver?” Morris piped up,
“I’m about to tell you that Morris, so shut up and don’t interrupt me again!” She snapped at him, she took a deep breath and looked up at them all gathered there in front of her,
“Now before I start here, I need you all to understand that this isn’t good news, as some of you already know, got that?” She asked and watched as they nodded, “Ok then,” She continued, “I got called in here a few hours ago and got directed straight to the lounge, and actually I think that it would be better that someone who was there at the time should tell you what happened before I got paged; Susan, Neela, Ray, Greg?” She suggested, and they nodded,
Susan started, since she had been there at when the ambulance arrived, “At about half past eight last night, we got a call about an MVA, and yeah we see those every day so we didn’t think much of it. All we knew was that we had two critical patients to deal with. When the first arrived, I sent Neela and Ray to deal with it whilst Abby and I waited for the second; Greg was waiting inside to help if he was needed. The second victim arrived a couple of minutes later, and that was when we all got the shocks of our lives,” She broke off, not knowing how to continue, and Neela stepped in,
“I think that you might be starting to get an idea of what went on here last night,” She began, “And yes, as Dr Weaver has already outlined, it was serious, but we thought that you should all know this because you have as much right to hear this as those of us who know what happened but are waiting for an update. Ok, so the second critical patient was a member of our staff here in the ER…” She trailed off too,
“Who?” Asked Sam quietly, not taking any notice as everyone turned to look at her,
It was Ray, who replied, also quietly, matching her tone,
“It was Luka,”
Everyone just looked at him as though he had gone completely crazy, they couldn’t believe it, and Kerry decided that it was time to intervene,
“Before you all ask, he isn’t dead, just seriously injured. He made it through surgery and he is being closely monitored in the ICU. Now I know that this is a lot for you all to take in, but we told you because, as Neela rightly said, you have a right to know, but we can’t afford to let this affect our work more than it already has, because we are now two members of staff down, and we’ll have to see how we can cope for the time being. Is that clear?” She asked, and they all nodded apart from Morris, who looked confused, and raised his hand, “Yes Morris?” Kerry asked,
“You said that we are two members of staff down, so what else am I missing here?”
“Valid point for once, Morris!” Kerry said sarcastically, “We will also be missing Abby for the foreseeable future,”
“Why?”
“Morris, it really doesn’t matter why, and all I can tell you is that she isn’t fit to work, that’s all there is to it!” Kerry said, making it clear that no further questions would be answered and that the conversation was over, “Now those of you who just got here, can you get to work please,” She stated and waited until they had all left the lounge before talking to the others, “Ok guys, I know that you are tired and you have seen more than your fair share tonight, but I would appreciate it if some of you could stay,”
They may have been tired, but all of them volunteered to stay on for a while longer,
“But I’m going to check on Abby first,” Neela said,
“Ok, tell that idiot of a doctor that I sent you, and that I said you are to be let in,”
“Understood, I won’t be too long,”

Abby woke up and stretched. Her muscles ached and she found that she had to blink a few times so that her eyes could adjust to the now very bright sunshine, which was filtering in through the window. She heard a knock on the door and looked up in time to see Neela step through the opening.
“Hi, Kerry asked me to stay on for a few hours, so I said that I’d just come up to check on you and to fill you in on a couple of things,”
“Oh, well I’m not feeling too bad now, but my head hurts a bit and he’s still not changed yet,”
“Well you know that could take time Abby,”
“Yeah I know, what was it that you wanted to tell me?”
“Ok, so Kerry called a meeting downstairs and between us we told everyone what had happened,”
“How did they take it?”
“They were shocked but they all got on with the job you know?”
“Yeah. What was said about me?”
“All Kerry said was that you weren’t fit to work, and the look that she gave Morris when he tried to object pretty much told him not to go there,”
“I bet he took that well!”
Neela laughed, it was good to hear Abby joking around, despite her situation. She looked over Abby’s shoulder at Luka, and then back at Abby before doing a double take and looking back at Luka,
“Abby…” She began…

Oh God, I really don't get any better do I!?! Once again I apologise for the really long wait, and for having not being around very much. My grandparents loved the photo DVD that I made for them to send to Australia, and his brother (who they sent it to) agreed. I hope you enjoy the chapter, though I'm not really sure about it, and I probably ought to warn you that I don't know when I'll be updating again since I have exams starting next week. Charlotte x
Neela laughed, it was good to hear Abby joking around, despite her situation. She looked over Abby’s shoulder at Luka, and then back at Abby before doing a double take and looking back at Luka,
“Abby…” She began…
“What is it?” Abby questioned,
Neela had lost the ability to speak; she was completely tongue tied, so she gestured to the bed behind Abby with her hand, indicating that she should turn around and look for herself.
Abby appeared to understand as she turned away from Neela to see what she was trying to draw her attention to. She gasped in surprise before hurrying over to the bedside.

Kerry had just about managed to get everybody working again, when she heard her pager bleeping. She looked at it and saw that it was flashing ‘ICU’, so she turned to Susan and told her that she was in charge until she got back. She quickly made her way up to the ICU thinking the worst.
However, when she turned the corner nothing looked different.
“Abby?” She asked of the woman sat next to the bed, “What’s going on?”
“He woke up,” Abby smiled, her eyes filled with tears,
“Oh Abby that’s fantastic!” Kerry exclaimed,
“Yeah it is! He was tired though, so he just fell back to sleep, but I feel so relieved, happy, and I don’t have to be so worried anymore!”
“That’s great Abby, everyone downstairs are going to be so pleased.”
Abby nodded, with a permanent smile fixed upon her face,
“I’ll come downstairs with you to tell them Kerry,” Neela decided; she wanted to leave Abby alone with Luka,
“Bye,” Both Kerry and Neela said to Abby, who responded with the same, and then they left.
“Thank God for that!” Kerry said to Neela whilst they walked back to the elevator which would take them back down to the ER,
“I know,” Neela replied, “I don’t know what she would have done if she’d lost him,”
Kerry nodded in agreement,
***** ***** ***** ***** *****
After Neela and Kerry left, Abby turned her attention back to Luka and picked up his hand once again. She could hardly describe how she felt; all that she knew was that she was completely elated; she could relax now because Luka was out of the danger period. Sitting back in her chair, she picked up one of the magazines, which Neela had brought up with her earlier and settled back to read it.
A couple of hours later she was completely engrossed in a medical journal, when she heard her name being whispered. She looked up to see that Luka had his eyes open and was watching her,
“Hey! You’re awake,” She exclaimed,
“What happened?” He asked,
“You were in an accident yesterday on your way back home,” She explained, “Drunk driver,”
Luka didn’t know what to say, she looked so tired, like she hadn’t slept properly since he had left her the previous evening. She had been crying. He hated that he had caused her pain, especially after he had promised her that he would never hurt her again.
“I’m sorry,” He whispered, and she looked back up at him,
“It wasn’t your fault,” She said, reaching over and taking his hand, “There was nothing that you could have done to avoid this; he ran a red light, and you didn’t do anything wrong,” Tears began to slide down her cheeks one again,
“Come here,” He said upon noticing this, indicating for her to move over to sit on the bed with him, “What’s wrong?” He asked her gently, and she fell into his arms,
“I thought that I was going to lose you,” She sobbed, “You’re the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I was so scared that you might die,”
Luka was powerless to do anything but comfort her, so he just tightened his hold on her and helped her to lie down on the bed next to him. He whispered to her reassuringly until she finally fell asleep and then he joined her.
***** ***** ***** ***** *****
There had been relief down in the ER when Kerry had delivered the message that Luka had woken up to the staff, and she then had a hard time trying to keep everybody focused on their work and prevent them from trying to sneak up to see him; she had, after all, promised Abby this. However, it seemed that someone had slipped off of her radar, not that she knew it.
Susan Lewis had decided that it was time she had a break since she had been working none-stop for so long, and so, whilst Kerry’s back was turned, she told Jerry that she was on a break and that she was going up to the roof. However, instead of taking the elevator the whole way up to the roof, she got off on the ICU floor, intending on popping in to see Luka before continuing on up. She rounded the corner and poked her head around the door, and was very surprised at what she saw there. Luka was lying in bed, but he wasn’t alone. No, she saw that Abby was there with him. She turned and walked back to the elevator and continued her journey to the roof. She felt hurt that Abby hadn’t told her what was going on between herself and Luka; she thought that they told each other everything.
***** ***** ***** ***** *****
Even though Kerry hadn’t noticed Susan’s disappearance, Neela had, and having also declared herself on a break, she set off on a mission to find her...
