Thank you to those of you who have left replies, Charlotte
“He’s up in the OR, Dubenko is operating,”
“Why? What’s wrong with him?” Abby asked, beginning to get hysterical again,
“He’s got some internal bleeding, but other than that his injuries aren’t too serious, however, there is still the issue of him having not regained consciousness yet.”
“Oh God!” Abby moaned, sinking down to the ground.
“What happened to him Susan?” Neela asked,
“He was hit by a drunk driver, but he was actually lucky; it could have been a lot worse. His car was hit on the passenger side as opposed to the driver side.”
“That’s good at least,”
“Yeah, I’ll go and see if there is any news yet,” Susan responded and left the room,
Neela knelt back down beside Abby and helped her back over to the couch,
“Come and sit back down Abby, he’s a fighter; he’ll pull through this,” She reassured,
“Why him Neela? Why him?” Abby sobbed,
“I don’t know sweetie, but he’ll be ok,”
“I can’t just sit here any longer. I need to go upstairs. I need to be there for him, he would be for me,”
“Ok, but I’m coming with you,”
“Thank you Neela, for everything,”
“That’s ok honey.” She replied, wrapping an arm around Abby’s shoulders as they stood up, “It’s what friends are for,”
An hour later, Neela watched as surgical team wheeled Luka out of the OR. Abby was asleep with her head resting in Neela’s lap. A nurse walked into the room, turning Neela’s attention away from the now empty theatre in front of her.
“Dr Rasgotra? He made it through, and we’re taking him to the ICU now,” She said,
“Thank you for letting us know. Can she come down with you?” Neela asked, motioning to Abby,
“It’s family only I’m afraid,”
“She’s his partner,”
“Oh ok, I’ll need to go talk to his surgeon first…”
“Don’t worry, I’ll talk to Dubenko about it, just let me wake her up first,”
“I think that I ought to do it, bring her down to the ICU when she’s awake and I’ll see what I can do,” The nurse smiled before turning and leaving the room, shutting the door quietly behind her.
Neela turned her attention to Abby. She shook her gently, and watched as her eyes flickered open a few times as they tried to adjust to the light. Suddenly she sat up straight as though remembering what had happened,
“Neela where’s Luka? What happened?” She demanded,
“It’s ok, he’s ok! They took him to the ICU…”
“I need to see him,”
“Abby slow down, the nurse went to check with Dubenko that you could go in there,”
“Neela I can’t ‘slow down’ and what do you mean by ‘if’?”
“You know the rules Abby, it’s family only,”
“But I love him, and I’m the closest thing he has to family here, does that not count for anything?”
“Abby, you’re not listening to me! I told the nurse that you were his partner, which is why she has gone to ask permission, otherwise the answer would have been no straight away,”
“But what if they still don’t let me see him?”
“I’ll talk to Dubenko, or we go to Dr Weaver, I’m sure she’ll understand and be able to pull some strings if necessary, but we might not need to”
“I know, but we might,”
“Let’s not think about that now, come on,” Neela said, taking her by the arm and guiding her down the corridor towards the ICU.
Abby was trying hard not to concentrate on the possible negatives of the situation, she knew that she needed to be optimistic, but she wasn’t sure she had it in her nature to think like that. She numbly allowed Neela to guide her down to the ICU, though she knew the route by heart herself. She didn’t even realise that they had reached the information desk outside the ICU until Neela sat her down on a chair so that she could go to talk to the doctor. A few minutes later, she returned and sat down next to Abby.
“I’m sorry, but it looks like Dubenko handed Luka over to the ICU doctor and he won’t let you anywhere near him,”
“I need to see him,”
“I know you do, but I guess we’re going to have to bring Weaver in to talk to the guy first,”
“Can we go then?”
“Yeah, let’s go back down to the ER, and if she isn’t already in, we’ll have Frank or Jerry page her, ok?”
“I suppose so, if there’s nothing else I can do, she’s my last hope,”

Thank you for your nice comments, Charlotte
The last thing that Abby wanted to do was sit around in the lounge waiting for Kerry Weaver to make her way in. Neela had brought her straight down to the ER and settled her in the lounge whilst she went to check with Jerry/Frank/whoever was on the desk – she didn’t know and really didn’t care. It was determined that Kerry wasn’t in the hospital, and so she was paged. When Neela returned, she had assured Abby that she hadn’t told anybody why Weaver needed paging and that when she arrived; she was to be sent straight to the lounge. Alone.
And so Abby had sat on the couch in the lounge for almost an hour; waiting, still numbly, for Kerry to arrive. She and Neela hadn’t spoken since she had returned to the room, and Abby was thankful for that; she needed the silence. Needed time to think, to pray. She couldn’t claim to have ever been religious, but she needed support from above just now, particularly to watch over Luka for her whilst she was unable to do so herself.
Eventually, after what seemed like hours, though it was most likely just a matter of minutes, Kerry walked through the lounge door. Neela got up off of the couch and walked over to greet her. When they both sat down, Neela touched Abby’s arm, and she looked up. It was then that Kerry saw her face, which was pale and tear-stained.
“What happened Abby?” She asked, concerned,
“I…er…help…need…please…er…” She stuttered, seemingly unable to form the words that she required,
“Do you want me to tell her?” Neela asked her. Abby nodded,
“Tell me what?” Kerry asked,
“There was an MVA a few hours ago,” Neela began, “A member of ER staff was injured,”
“Wait, one of my staff was injured? Who was it? Why wasn’t I informed?” Kerry questioned, startled,
“Luka,” Abby whispered, Kerry looked at her, “It’s Luka,” She said a little louder,
Kerry was stunned. This was the last thing that she had expected, but she still got a feeling that she wasn’t being told the whole story,
“What else is going on here?” She pushed gently; it was Neela who spoke up,
“He got through surgery, and he’s now up in the ICU,”
“That’s good,”
“It is, but there is another problem now,” Neela looked over at Abby, Kerry followed her gaze,
“And what is that? Abby?”
Abby looked up again, and Kerry saw the fresh tears running down her face once again,
“I…they…not…allowed…see…despite…together…” She sobbed, Kerry understood,
“Ok, so what you’re saying is that you’re not allowed to see him, even though the two of you are together?” She asked Abby, who nodded.
Kerry stood up and walked over to Abby, resting her hand on her shoulder, and said to her,
“Ok Abby, I’ll see what I can do for you,”
“Thank you Kerry,” She whispered gratefully,
Kerry smiled at her, before straightening up and motioning to Neela, who turned back to Abby and told her that she’d be back soon. Kerry stopped outside the lounge door and turned to Neela,
“I’m going to go straight up there now and knock some heads together. I don’t know if they were unwilling to let Abby in because they work together or because they have genuinely forgotten the rules, but if they were told that she was his partner, then she should have been let in immediately, and I’m going to find out why she wasn’t. You stay with her in here until I get back.”
“That’s good, thank you,” Neela replied, and Kerry nodded before turning to walk away. And then suddenly Neela remembered, “Dr Weaver,” she called, and Kerry turned back around, “They didn’t tell anyone that they were together, only you and I know anything about this at the moment,”
“Ok, I’ll try to be discreet,” Kerry smiled and walked away,
Neela walked back into the lounge and sat back down beside Abby.
“You do know that she’s going to do everything in her power to sort this out for you,” She asked,
“I know, but she can’t change everything, I mean God Neela, there’s still no guarantee that he’s going to make it. I can’t lose him, we only got back together a few weeks ago, and I can’t help but think about all of the time we’ve wasted…”
“But you can’t think like that; you’ve got to concentrate on the future. If you spend your life thinking only about the ‘what ifs’ you’ll go crazy,”
Abby didn’t answer, she knew that Neela was right, hell, Luka told her the same thing often enough. She leaned back against the cushions on the back of the couch, and half-smiled, thinking back on all of the good times she and Luka had had over the previous few years, since they had met and dated the first time. Neela was right; even if the worst did happen, she would always have those memories. She would never forget, ever.
***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** *****
It was another hour before Kerry returned to the lounge. She quickly realised that both Abby and Neela were asleep. She didn’t want to wake Abby after everything that she had been through that night, but she knew that Abby would never forgive her if she didn’t wake her now that she had some news. She gently shook Abby’s shoulder and crouched down beside her,
“What’s happening?” Abby asked, desperate for an update,
“Well, firstly I went upstairs and yelled at the guy who claims to be in charge of the ICU, and he won’t be giving you anymore problems, and secondly Luka is stable for the time being. I’m going to take you up there now,”
“Thank you Kerry, thank you so much,” She sobbed with gratitude.
Kerry couldn’t think of anything else to do other than pull her into a hug.
