Hi guys, sorry for the delay, I've been pretty busy with other projects that I have been allocated, but I do have another chapter now! Charlotte
Abby was also running late. She had missed the El and had to wait for the next one to arrive. However, not even the thought of Morris lumbering her with all of the crappy cases again was dampening her mood. Despite her obvious lateness, she walked into the ER with a smile on her face; she had already decided that she was going to get through the day without letting anybody get to her, especially not Carter.
Luka had finally managed to manoeuvre his way through the traffic on the roads of Chicago. He walked into the ER just minutes after Abby, not that he knew that at the time. As he walked past Admit, Neela smiled at him, and he smiled back. He carried on walking towards the Doctor’s Lounge to drop off his coat and other personal belongings, and pick up his white coat and stethoscope.
Abby looked around as she heard the door behind her open. She had already exchanged her winter coat for her white coat, and was now making herself a cup of coffee. She was expecting to find herself faced with Morris, Pratt or Ray making jokes about how she had left the department a couple of days before. Instead, she found that it was Luka who had just entered the lounge.
Luka opened the lounge door and suddenly found himself face-to-face with the woman of his dreams.
“Want a coffee?” She asked,
“Yes please, that would be great,” He replied, opening his locker,
“Did you just get here?”
“Yeah, the traffic was dreadful,”
“I can imagine,”
“How long have you been here?”
“Not long, I kind of missed the El, so I just got here myself,” She answered, handing him a mug of coffee,
“Thanks, we’d better get out there before they all come looking for us,” He joked,
“Don’t I know it! I’ve only been here for less than ten minutes, and I’ve already got Morris, Pratt and Ray making jokes about the incident which occurred the other day,”
“Sometimes it seems like we work with a group of children!”
“Tell me about it,”
“Oh well, they’ll get bored before long, so just ignore them until they do,”
“Yeah I’ll do that,”
“Good, now let’s go,” He told her, taking her hand and leading her towards the door.
Before he opened the door, he turned and kissed her softly; he then stroked her cheek before letting go of her hand. They left the lounge together and headed for admit, where they were both surprised to find Neela still standing, still smiling at them.
“OK everyone, let’s get to work,” Luka ordered of his team, “We have patients to see,”
The crowd around Admit began to disperse as the doctors each picked up a handful of charts and busied themselves, though Abby was unable to escape before Neela grabbed her hand and pulled her to one side, whispering:
“I think that we need to talk! Do you want to grab a coffee when you get a break?”
“I guess so, see you later,” Abby replied,
“Yeah, you too,”
Abby picked up a couple of charts, looked up at Luka’s inquisitive look and flashed him a smile, before heading off to help her patients.
Luka found himself caught up in trauma after trauma over the course of the morning, whilst Abby’s morning was reasonably slow as she picked up the minor cases. They both wanted to spend their lunch breaks together, but they suspected that this would cause people to be suspicious, and besides, Abby had made plans with Neela.
At approximately 12:30pm, Abby declared herself on her break and headed to the lounge to find Neela. They decided to go to Ike’s. Neela waited until they were seated and had ordered before opening fire on Abby:
“So?” She asked,
“So what?” Abby replied,
“So, did you tell him?”
“I might have done,” Abby answered, smiling coyly,
“You did, didn’t you!”
It was a statement, not a question,
“Ok then,” She sighed, “Yes I did!”
“And?” Neela enquired,
“And what?” Abby wasn’t about to make this easy for her!
“And, how did he react?”
“He was shocked, but he told me that he loved me too,”
“You see! What did I tell you?” Neela asked, but then she remembered something, and added, “Hang on a minute, you were both late in this morning, is there something that you aren’t telling me?”
“There isn’t really anything to tell,”
“Oh come on!”
“Ok, ok! I guess I can see why that would look suspicious, but nothing happened. Yeah, we did some kissing, and he stayed the night, but that was because of my insecurities, nothing else,”
“Your insecurities, what do you mean?”
“He left last night, but he forgot to take his keys with him, so he had to come back. I gave them to him, and he kissed me again before turning to leave again, but I wouldn’t let him, and pulled him back inside. I asked him not to leave me, and I suppose that I meant that I didn’t want him to walk away from me again, that’s my insecurity, that I will be left behind again. I got upset, he comforted me, and I asked him to stay with me, and he did. I had a nightmare this morning and he had to comfort me once again. I was late because I had to calm myself down completely, and he was late because he had to go home to change before he came in to work.”
Neela wasn’t sure what to say, she had never realised that there was so much more to Abby’s character than she showed at work,
“Neela,” She heard Abby say,
“Yeah,” She replied,
“You do realise that you are the only person who knows about any of this, so do you think that you could keep it to yourself until we decide that we are ready for people to know?”
“I can do that,” She replied,
They ate in silence after that, and headed back to the ER to finish their shifts.

Got another update for you! Charlotte
The ER got slammed that afternoon; if anybody in Chicago could have hurt themselves, they did. By the end of the afternoon Abby was glad that she could hand her cases off to the night shift and get out of the hospital. She only had half an hour left on her shift and after having rushed around since she got back from lunch, she was feeling pretty tired, as well as being pissed off at Morris; the others had got the message and had left her alone, but he was persisting, and it had gone well past the annoying stage.
Luka had an afternoon of continuous traumas to add to the morning’s haul. To put it simply, he was exhausted, yet he knew that he had to get through a meeting with Kerry before he could go home and crash out. The joys of being an attending in the ER!
Abby had hardly seen Luka during the shift since he was covering all of the traumas, and she had been allocated all of the minor cases. She hoped that she could meet up with him once they were both through. She was just thinking about how much she would enjoy this idea, when Morris came up behind her:
“Stop day-dreaming and get back to work Weepy Sleepy Abby! Your shift doesn’t end for another twenty minutes!”
“Exactly Morris, so I’m finishing up my paperwork, then I should be able to get out of here on time. My feet ache, I haven’t sat down all day, and for the last time my name is ABBY, ONLY ABBY, and what happened to me the other day is absolutely NO CONCERN OF YOURS,” She paused for a moment, before adding, “GOT IT?”
“Err…Yeah…Bye” Morris stuttered, and left,
Luka had finally managed to disengage himself from the trauma rooms and headed for the lounge to grab a cup of coffee before his meeting with Weaver and the other ER attendings, most likely including Carter. He opened the door and walked in, pulling off his white coat as he did so. He looked up to find Abby sat at the table with a pile of charts, completing paperwork. She looked up when she heard the door closing, and he saw her face.
Abby had heard the door close and had looked up, wiping her eyes, as she expected to find Morris stood in front of her yet again, but it wasn’t, and she was glad of that. She was happy to see Luka because he was the one person that she needed just then.
Luka stepped towards her, concerned. He had seen her wipe her eyes and wondered why she had been crying. He rested his hand on her shoulder, and she looked up at him. She stood up and threw her arms around him, resting her head on his chest. He returned her embrace, gently stroking her hair.
“What happened? Why are you upset?” He whispered softly,
“Just Morris,” She replied with the same tone of voice,
“What did he do this time?”
“Cracking jokes about the other day, and calling me names. He won’t let it drop, and I kind of just blew up at him,”
“What did he call you?”
“Something like ‘Weepy Sleepy Abby, but hopefully he’s got the message now. To tell you the truth, I couldn’t care less any more. I just want to go home and snuggle up with you again; I missed you,”
“I missed you too, but I’ve got a meeting with Kerry and the other attendings, to discuss the med students, to go to.”
“Oh God, do you have to?”
“You know I do sweetheart, but I can’t imagine that I’ll be much longer than an hour, so if you want to go home, I’ll see you there when I’m through,”
“Hang on a minute,” Abby looked up suddenly, “Will Carter be at this meeting?”
“I would have thought so, why?”
“I don’t trust him, he’ll probably follow you when you leave, and if come to my place, then he’ll probably do something to damage both of our reputations,”
“Ok, so what do you want to do, because I want to see you later?”
“I guess I could go to your place, then if he follows you he won’t have reason to suspect anything,”
“Good idea,” Luka said, stepping towards his locker to fish out his keys, taking Abby with him, “Here, take the key, and I’ll see you later.”
“Ok, I’ll see you later, I love you,” She whispered, tilting her head up to kiss him quickly before grabbing her coat and handbag out of her locker and leaving the lounge.
Luka poured himself a cup of coffee before also leaving the lounge. He headed up to Kerry’s office, since that was where the meeting was going to be taking place. When he got there he found Susan was already there, and they were therefore waiting for Carter to arrive and Kerry to finish up whatever she was doing and invite them in.
“Hi Susan, did you have a nice vacation?” He asked,
“Yeah, it was good, but I can’t wait to get back to this place tomorrow, I’ve been missing everybody, especially Abby,”
“I think she’s been missing you too, and your little ‘girl talk’ sessions!”
“Oh, and how would you know that?”
“Come on Suze! She’s my best friend,”
“Yeah, I know! But why would she need to talk to me so desperately?”
“I’m sure you’ll find out soon enough,”
Susan was about to protest when Kerry’s office door opened and she invited them in,
“Have either of you two seen Carter?” Kerry asked,
Both Luka and Susan shook their heads,
“Ok then, lets just get on with this then we can all go home,” Kerry said.
Back at Luka’s apartment, Abby locked the door and removed her heavy winter coat. She kicked off her shoes and instantly regretted it as she didn’t have any socks and her feet were freezing. She decided to raid Luka’s wardrobe, and soon came back downstairs wearing a thick pair of socks and an oversized jumper. She snuggled up on the couch and was soon fast asleep.
Carter never showed up at the meeting, and to say that Kerry was angry was an understatement. Luka and Susan couldn’t get out of her office quickly enough when the meeting was over.
“What do you think happened to Carter?” Susan asked Luka,
“Oh, I don’t know,” He replied slightly sarcastically,
“Are you sure that nothing has happened whilst I’ve been away?” She pushed, having noticed his tone,
“Well, something has, but I think that you probably ought to talk to Abby,”
“Why? What happened to Abby?”
“It’s not for me to say Susan,”
“Come on Luka, you’re scaring me, what happened to Abby?”
“All I’m going to tell you is that Abby and Carter broke up, she can tell you the rest,”
“What? Abby and Carter broke up? When did this happen?”
“A couple of days ago,”
“Is she ok?”
“She’ll be fine, you can talk to her tomorrow, but I’ve got to go,”
“Why? Got someone waiting at home for you?”
“It’s not that, I’ve been on for eight hours in trauma after trauma, I’m exhausted, I need to sleep,” He covered,
“I’ll let you go then, see you tomorrow,”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow Suze.” He said as he walked away to his car.

Sorry if any of this is getting repetitive. Here's an update now, and you may get another one later, Charlotte
Luka quickly made his way home, which wasn’t too hard since there wasn’t a lot of traffic on the roads. The meeting had taken longer than he had anticipated because of Carter not turning up. Kerry had insisted on waiting for him and they had sat around for about half an hour before Susan had asked her if they could just do what she had said as she let them into her office because everyone was tired and wanted to get home as quickly as possible. Kerry had reluctantly agreed, and they finally began.
When he reached his apartment block, he parked his car in the allocated space and headed inside. He knocked on his door, but there was no answer. He tried again, but there was still nothing, so he removed his spare key from its hiding place and unlocked the door before replacing it and going inside. He locked the door from the inside and put the chain on.
He called Abby’s name, but received no answer, so he walked from the kitchen into the living area. That’s when he saw her. She was laid on the couch, curled up into a ball, wearing his jumper, fast asleep. He smiled; she looked peaceful. He didn’t want to wake her, so he lifted her up and carried her to his room, where he gently lowered her onto the bed and tucked the sheets around her before pulling the quilt up to cover her.
He was feeling really tired from his hectic day, and so he changed into his pyjamas and disappeared off to the bathroom to brush his teeth. Once he was through, he climbed into bed, and turned the light off. He wrapped his arms around Abby, and quickly fell into a deep sleep.
Abby woke up to the sound of her phone ringing. She carefully extracted herself from Lukas embrace and rushed downstairs to the kitchen where she had left her handbag. She answered it:
“Hello,” She said sleepily,
“Hello Abby,” it was Susan,
“Oh, hi Suze,” Abby said, trying, but failing miserably to stifle a huge yawn,
“Hi sweetie, I tried you on your landline, but you didn’t answer. I decided to phone your cell because it isn’t really all that late,”
“It’s ok, I was sleeping; had a very hard day at work,”
“Funny! That’s what Luka said,”
“When did you see Luka?”
“The attendings’ meeting,”
“Oh yeah,”
“How are you?”
“I’m doing good, just really tired,”
“Really? Because Luka said something about you and Carter breaking up,”
“He did?”
“Well, I kind of forced it out of him. He didn’t say anything else though, told me I had to talk to you,”
“Right, well I’m not really thinking straight just now, can we talk about this at work tomorrow?”
“Of course we can, go back to sleep Abby,”
“I will, night Suze,”
“Night Abs,”
Abby hung up the phone and dragged herself back up into Luka’s bedroom, climbed into bed and snuggled herself back up in his embrace. Had she been more awake she might have wondered how she got up there originally, but the thought never occurred to her, and she quickly fell back into a peaceful sleep.
Both Abby and Luka were woken the next morning by the alarm clock at 6:30am. Abby yawned and turned around so that she was facing Luka within their embrace. She pulled him close and her lips met his in a loving kiss. She couldn’t imagine a better way to wake up.
Luka didn’t want to end the moment, but he knew that he had to; they had to get ready for work, since if they were both late again people could get suspicious.
“Come on sweetheart, we’ve got to get up, it’s 6:30am and we’re on a 8am again,”
“I know, and I ought to go home and get changed, unless I wear scrubs today,”
“It’s up to you, I can get ready then drive you home if you want,”
“No it’s ok, I’ll wear scrubs, going home would mean we have to run around like headless chickens, and we’ll probably still be late.”
“And we wouldn’t want to draw attention to that!”
“No we wouldn’t, so can I take a shower here?”
“You don’t even have to ask that, why don’t you go in now, and I’ll go make some breakfast?”
“Sounds good,”
“Ok then,”
Abby headed off to the bathroom to have a shower whilst Luka went downstairs into the kitchen.
A little while later, Abby emerged from Luka’s bedroom, towel-drying her hair as she descended to the living area and walked into the kitchen,
“What are you cooking?”
“Pancakes,”
“Oh great. Thanks Luka!”
“That’s ok, I’m going to go shower now, ok?”
“What about breakfast?”
“I already ate!”
“Oh, ok then.”
Once they were both ready, they left the apartment, got into Luka’s car and travelled to the hospital. However, before they arrived there, Abby told Luka to pull over, saying that she would walk the rest of the way so as not to raise any suspicions in the ER. She leaned over and kissed him passionately, knowing that she wouldn’t get the chance to do so until later that evening, and then opened the car door and left the vehicle.
Despite her walking the last half-mile of her journey, Abby arrived at the ER with time to spare before her shift began. She headed for the lounge and once inside quickly changed into scrubs. She pulled her white coat and stethoscope out of her locker and put them on before making herself a coffee. She had just sat down with a medical journal when the lounge door opened and Susan walked in:
“Hi Suze!”
“Hey Abby, how are you feeling this morning?”
“Good, I’m actually feeling quite happy, but for how long that lasts is another story!”
“What do you mean?”
“Oh, Morris and I had a little disagreement yesterday, and I think that Carter’s on today,”
“Oh right, what’s the problem with Morris?”
“Oh, he spent yesterday teasing me about the events of the day when Carter and I broke up,”
“What did happen?”
“It’s a long story, can we go out for something to eat after our shifts?”
“Yeah ok, you know that you can tell me anything Abby?”
“Yeah, just not at work!”
“Right!”
“Well I’d better get out there!”
“Ok, I’ll talk to you later,”
With that Abby turned and walked from the lounge. Susan followed her out with her eyes; even after the door had closed she was still stood looking at it. She frowned, thinking about how Abby had been behaving, she certainly didn’t seem the way Susan would have expected her to following the break up of a long-term relationship. But then Susan didn’t know the whole story!
