Wow thanks so much everyone!!! You're comments mean a lot!
Chapter 4:
“How are you doing?” Abby asked stepping outside onto the porch where Mirjana was sitting.
“I’ve been preparing myself for this to come, but I still didn’t think it would be this soon.” Mirjana sobbed into her hands. Abby sat on the steps next to her, and rubbed her back.
“You’re being a lot stronger than I would be.” Abby whispered thinking to herself what she would do if that was Luka. She shook it off, and pulled Mirjana in hugging her. “Why don’t you go for a walk before we have to leave for the funeral.” Abby suggested. Mirjana nodded, and stood up.
“Thank you Abby.” She said and gave her best smile before walking down the walkway.
“Are we all ready?” Luka asked straightening Joe’s bowtie, and buttoning his suit jacket. “Where’s Mirjana?” Luka asked as Abby walked out of the kitchen.
“I suggested she go for a walk before the service.”
“Ok well I guess she’s going to meet us there.” Luka’s father said walking out of his room with Amara dressed in a black velvet dress. Together they got in the car, and headed to the church. After church they headed to the burial.
“Daddy look Kovac!” Joe said pointing to Jasna’s tombstone. “and there’s another one.” He said moving on to Marco, then Daniella. Luka tightened his grip around Abby’s hand as he held his breath.
“That’s your brother and sister. Daddy was married before and had 2 kids, a boy and girl. But they died.” Abby said knowing Luka was having trouble finding the right words.
“I’m not an only child?!” Joe smiled then faded looking down at the headstones.
“You ok?” Abby asked kneeling down next to him.
“Why did they have to die? I could have had someone to play with.” Joe said looking at Abby.
“There was a war, and the building they lived in was hit. Jasna was about your age.” Luka said resting his hands on his shoulders. Joe could only nod his head as he glared at the three names.
“Luka we have to go.” Luka’s father said cradling Amara in his arms as he stared at the headstones. He placed his hand reassuringly on Luka’s shoulder. Luka nodded grabbing Joe’s hand.
“We’ll talk about it more later.” Abby whispered to Joe as she took his other hand. He nodded looking behind him.
“Where’s Mirjana?” Luka asked looking around as the service started.
“I don’t know. I thought she would meet us at the church.” Abby said pulling Joe onto her lap. He leaned back against her listening to the trumpets playing.
Abby looked around trying to see if she was standing off to the side, but there was no sign of Mirjana anywhere. Amara began to fuss, and Abby moved Joe over to Luka’s lap. Luka’s father quickly handed her to Abby, and Abby moved to the back walking Amara and rocking her back to sleep. She looked around some more for Mirjana, but she never showed up. After the service they sat for a moment embracing each other as the casket was lowered into the ground.
Back at the house Luka and Abby decided to take Joe for a walk and talk to him more about Luka’s past. “We’ll be right back dad. You sure you’re going to be ok?” Luka asked gesturing towards Amara sleeping in her rocker.
“I’ll be fine. I’ll stay just in case Mirjana comes back.” Luka and Abby nodded then went to meet Joe outside.
“Ready sport?” Luka asked taking his hand. He nodded holding his other out to Abby. They walked for a little while down a dirt road taking turns answering all Joe’s questions.
“What’s that?” Joe said pointing to a mound of clothes on the side of the road.
“I don’t know.” Luka said as they got closer. Joe let go of Abby and Luka running to what was on the side of the road. Abby and Luka chased after him, and picked up their pace when he stopped short gasping. When they caught up with him Abby quickly covered Joe’s eyed and turned his face into her as he cried. Abby choked back tears as she backed Joe up. Luka knelt down over Mirjana he rested his fingers on her neck and shook his head.
“Is she dead?” Joe sobbed pressing his face into Abby’s shirt. Abby looked over at Luka crying over Mirjana.
“I don’t know sweetie.”
“Go fix her!” Joe yelled looking up at her. Abby began to cry and shook her head.
“I cant.” She whispered.
“Take him home, and call the ambulance.” Luka said walking over to them.
“You going to help her?” Joe asked as Abby picked him up.
“Yes, I’m going to try.” Luka said rubbing his and Abby’s back before she started walking back to the house. When they were gone Luka knew she was already dead, and there was nothing he could do. He looked her over concluding she was a hit and run victim.
At the house Abby burst through the front door startling Luka’s father. “Joe go play with Amara.” Abby said wiping the tears from her face.
“Abby?”
“Can we go outside?” Abby asked grabbing the phone on their way outside. “We found Mirjana on the side of the road. Looks like a hit and run.” Abby watched his face fall, and she hugged him. “We need to call the ambulance.” Abby whispered wiping a tear from his face. He nodded taking the phone from her.
“Can you stay with them?” he asked running down the yard. Abby turned taking a deep breath before walking into the house.
“… but my daddy’s helping her.” She head Joe talking to Amara.
“What are you doing?” Abby asked sitting on the floor pulling Joe onto her lap.
“I’m telling Amara what happened.” Joe said wrapping Abby’s arms around him. She let him, and rocked him slowly.
“She doesn’t understand.” Abby said softly.
“I know, but she should hear what happened.”
“How are you?” Abby asked after a little while.
“I’m ok.” Joe smiled up at her.
“You sure? I know that was a little scary.”
“Mom, you work in the ER why were you scared?” Abby giggled shaking her head.
“I meant for you.”
“I’m fine, but what happens with Amara? Both her mommy and daddy are in heaven now.” Joe said crawling off Abby’s lap, and played with Amara. Abby sat for a moment not realizing Amara just lost both of her parents.
“She’ll stay with grandpa.” Abby said unsurely of what’s really going to happen.
