Thanks!! Sorry this took me so long, I have had no time to do anything lately! Chapter 8: A few days later Abby laid on the couch starring up at the ceiling, “Mara what do you want to do now?” Abby asked Amara laying on Abby’s chest. Amara just made some mumbling sounds, and Abby giggled. “My point exactly.” Abby thought for a moment, and sat up. “How about we go pick Joe up from school a little early, and go bug Luka at work.” Abby smirked getting Amara ready to go.
“Hi I’m Abby Kovac, I’m here to pick up my son Joe.” Abby said politely to the woman at in the main office of the school.
“Sure one moment please.” The woman smiled picking up the phone. “Hello Mrs. Brinkman. Joe’s mother’s here to pick him up.” The woman said then hung up the phone. “He’ll be right down.”
“Thank you.” Abby smiled sitting down on the chair bounding Amara as she giggled loudly.
“Hi mommy!” Joe smiled widely hugging her.
“Hey munchkin! I thought I’d pick you up today, so we can go hang with daddy at work.” Joe jumped up and down the whole way to the car.
Once they got to the hospital Abby smiled wishing she was back to work. “Hey Frank!” Abby grinned as he leaned over to look at Amara.
“Hey there little one.” Frank said, but Amara was too busy looking around to notice anyone talking to her.
“Come on I want to go see daddy!” Joe said pulling at Abby’s shirt. Just then they saw Luka run past them putting on a gown heading towards one of the trauma rooms. “Daddy!!” Joe yelled going to run after him, but Abby grabbed the back of his shirt.
“He’s going into a trauma right now. We’ll wait in the lounge for him.” Abby said pulling him through the door.
“I thought I heard my little man!” Luka said barging into the lounge.
“Daddy!” Joe yelled jumping off the chair. Luka caught him mid-leap, and hugged him. Amara smiled kicking her feet on Abby’s lap. She lifted her arms for him to pick her up. He moved Joe over to his hip, and took Amara in his other arm.
“What are you guys doing here?” Luka asked sitting down with both kids on his lap.
“I thought we’d come in and say hi.” Abby said shrugging.
“You were board out of your mind.” Luka smirked at her.
“Or you could say that.” Abby giggled. “How about we go to the beach tonight.” Abby said leaning back in her chair.
“That sounds like a plan.” Luka said looking down at Joe. “What do you think?”
“I think, YES!” Joe said clapping his hands. Amara followed Joe clapping her hands. Everyone laughed.
“Luka MVA rolling in.” Ray said poking his head in the door, “Oh hey Abby. When you coming back?”
“Next week thank God!” Abby sighed.
“Ok buddy I have to get back to work, but I’ll see you in a little bit.” Luka said kissing all three of them goodbye.
“Lets go get ready for the beach!” Joe said leading the way out the door.
“I’ll just follow you.” Abby yelled to Joe.
At the house Abby had everything packed and ready to go. Joe sat at the front door waiting for Luka to come home. “Is it time yet?” Joe asked turning around looking at Abby feeding Amara a bottle.
“Not yet sweetie. Daddy should be home any second now.” Abby flashed him her best smile. He just bowed his head and sighed. After about 2 hours Abby walked over to him and sat down on the floor next to him, “I’m sorry hunny.”
“He’s stuck at work again isn’t he.” Joe whispered leaning into Abby.
“I think so.” Abby said mad at Luka for not calling. “How about I set up the picnic outside, and we’ll eat out there tonight.” Abby hated to see Joe so hurt.
“No! We have to wait for daddy!” Joe snapped turning back to the front door. Abby sighed standing up to put Amara to bed.
“How about something to eat Joe.” Abby said after coming back from upstairs.
“I want to wait for daddy!” Joe said with tears in his eyes.
“I’m sorry, but I have no idea where your father is, and it’s getting late.” Abby said taking Joe’s hand. He stood up and walked with her into the kitchen. She sat watching him pick at his food for about 20 minutes when the front door opened.
“I’m so sorry! The MVA ended up being a huge highway accident and we got slammed with 10 traumas.” Luka said walking into the kitchen.
“Hey pal…” Luka smiled, but it quickly faded when Joe didn’t look up from the corn he was pushing around with his fork. “Aww Joe..” Luka whispered.
“Mommy can I please be excused?” Joe asked fighting back tears. Abby could tell, and nodded rubbing his back as he stood up. He put his plate in the sink and walked towards the doorway. “Mommy?”
“What buddy.”
“Can you read me a story tonight?” Abby glanced quickly at Luka with his head down, and back to Joe as he pleaded with her with his eyes.
“I’ll be right up. Go pick on out.” Abby said softly. Joe ran out of the kitchen and she could hear his tiny footsteps disappear as he went up the stairs. “You know you really let him down tonight.” Abby said coldly.
“Abby you know how it is…”
“I don’t care! You could have called to let us know what’s going on! That little boy sat at the front door for 3 hours waiting for his father to come home!” Abby shook her head looking away. “The least you could’ve done was call.” She said walking out of the kitchen leaving Luka standing there alone.
“What story did you pick out tonight?” Abby asked smiling as best she could. Joe handed her a Winnie the Pooh book, and she laid on the bed as he cuddled up to her. She started reading then stopped when she felt Joe sniffle against her. “Are you ok?” Abby asked putting the book down. She held Joe closer when she saw him crying.
“Daddy lied to me.” Joe sobbed into Abby’s shirt staining it with his tears.
“He didn’t mean it hunny. Sometimes at the hospital it gets really busy, and it’s hard to leave. There were a lot of people who needed him there.” Abby explained rocking Joe.
“But I needed him!” Joe sniffled rubbing his nose. Abby looked up to see Luka standing in the doorway. He went to take a step inside, but Abby shook her head no. Luka bowed his head and continued down the hall. He peeked into Amara’s room, but she was fast asleep, so he went into his room and shut the door. Abby finally got Joe asleep and went into her room. She found Luka already asleep, so she got ready for bed, and turned on the TV.
“Abby I’m tired if your going to watch TV go in the living room.” Luka mumbled pulling the blankets over his head.
“I’m sorry, are you telling me what to do? I don’t think you have the right to say anything right now. I had to sit here al night with a heartbroken little boy, and just spent 25 minutes trying to get him to stop crying. I’m pretty sure you can go in the living room if your so tired. The couch does pull out you know.” Abby said coldly turning up the TV. Luka stared up at her, and grabbed his pillow storming out of the room.
