Hi gyus! That's a fanfic I wrote in Portuguese this year and I decided to translate it to update here. I hope it's not too confusing, my English suck...
I changed the original ER story from the episode "Strange Bedfellows"...
Abby was filling the last chart of the day, and was happy for being able to go home after a 12 hours shift. Her back ached and she was really tired. Her belly was growing very fast. The extra weight, the need to walk a lot through the hospital, and still having to go to the bathroom each half hour was making her exausted by the end of the day. She then finished the chart, went to the Lounge, took off her white coat, her sthetoscope, put on the coat and left to meet Luka. They were going to his place, what they practically made every day after the shift. Abby usually goes to her apartment just to take the bills and some clothes, although they had prepared a nursery in both their apartments.
She met him at the reception and they crossed the automatic doors. Outside, Luka said:
“I am keeping contact with Carter.”
Abby couldn’t help but show up her surprise.
“Seriouslly? Did you tell him about us…?”
“No, no… He is in Darfur, now, in Sudan, and needs extra hands, needs more doctors, then he asked me to spend a month working and I would take some medicines that are needed in there. And I said yes.”
Abby spent some seconds to understand what she heard.
“You are going pra Africa? And you pretended to tell me that sometime?”
“I am telling you now… people need me there, and I can help them. And I will be back before the baby is born, but if you don’t want me to go, I won’t go.”
Abby didn’t feel capable to answer. They just kept their way to the car.
They got in the car, silently. Abby’s mind was blowing up, she was angry, and at the same time she was scared to be alone and pregnant. She had so many things to tell Luka, but she decided to wait until getting home. Luka wanted to know what Abby was thinking, but he didn’t dare to say a word during the way. When they get to the apartment, Abby sat down on the couch and he remained stood up. They remained in silence for a few seconds, avoiding eye contact. Luka, then, decided to speak.
Abby’s POV
“If you don’t want me to go, I won’t go…”
“Yeah, you already said that, Luka, and I don’t understand why you put this decision on me! You know, you are the one who will be far away from the baby, who won’t see my belly to keep growing each day, that will be you the one that might loose the birth of this child, Luka. YOU, and not me!”
Abby figured out that she had tears in her face, but she didn’t care.
“I told you, I will be back before the baby is born...”
“Yes, that’s what you say… But who guarantees that you won’t get another tropical illness, or take a shot in the head from some... lunatic... tribe guy, or find some good reason for you want to be there more time… Carter found one, why that couldn’t happen to you?” I stopped for a moment imagining Luka with another woman. I remembered that time that he came back with malaria, he was with Gilliam…
“Luka, when I decided to keep this baby, I knew you would be by my side. But we had been together for such a little time, and I knew that, someday, we could simply break up. One day, you could go away and continue with your life, get married, have other children… Many of this things had passed for my mind, and I confess that you come back to Africa wasn’t one of them… When I decided not to termite, I knew that I might have to do this this alone… Maybe you think that not, but I can, I really can do this alone, and if I have to, I will…”
Tears began to fall without control, and I had no longer the control of my voice’s tone. I didn’t know if it was the hormones, or all this thing of being a mother changed my way to face the problems. But this time, I simply couldn’t help but say everything I feel. Luka was hearing my words, staring the floor, absorbing everything he was listening. As he hadn’t said nothing, I continued:
“If you really think that you own this to Carter, if you think that in Africa you can save more lives than you save here…” I paused for a moment, trying to control the tears and taking courage in saying everything I needed. “If you think that people need you more in there than in here, I think you must follow your heart and go.”
With that, Luka looked at my eyes, wich were red and puffy, then he looked at my belly and, without saying one word, he turned back and walked through the door. I closed my eyes, crying, desperate. That was it. He was going away. I had lost him forever. Sudenlly, I remembered… I needed to tell him, before he goes… I wasn’t supposed to tell him yet, but how could I hide this from him? He’s going to África, for G*d’s sake! He needs to know!
“Luka…” He turned over, and I realized that he also had tears in his face. “There’s something I need to tell you… It was supposed to be a surprise, was you should just find out at the birth’s moment…” “I’ve been having secret appointments with Janet for a while. We’ve been hiding something from you. Don’t blame her, I made her do it…”
Luka seemed worried. “What is it, something wrong with the baby?”
No, nothing’s wrong with the baby, I thought. But something is definetly wrong with you. With us. I couldn’t waste more time. I had to tell him, as hard as it would be. A secret that has been hidden with so much affection, so many time spent imaggining his face when he finds out. Then I told him, almost screamed, crying desperatly.
“I’M HAVING TWINS!”
So... What do you think?
