Chapter 3: Start Of Something New
It had been three days since Eddie left. Three days since Abby had looked at Maggie. Three days since she had said a single word. Three days since she had a smile on her face…Three days since she had been happy. When Maggie was inside Abby was outside. If Maggie was outside, Abby was inside. She truly hated her mother for what she did… How would Abby’s life be now that her dad was gone? What would happen to her? To Eric? To Maggie? She would be off her meds all the time. Eddie was the one who made sure she took them… and now that he was gone…Who would do that? Maggie didn’t have a job.. How would they afford the house? The groceries? Did she even think about these things?
It was a warm summer day today. The sun was shining.. Not a cloud in the sky. Abby sat on the sidewalk, coloring on it with chalk. She pushed her hair out of her face and looked up. Across the street was a little boy. He was playing soccer with his dad in the front yard. She continued to watch them. They were having so much fun, the little boy and his father. As she watched them she wondered where her dad was… and was he thinking of her too?
The boy's mom came outside, and then her and the dad went back inside.. Leaving the little boy outside. Alone. Abby sighed and rolled onto the grass. She lay there looking up at the sky… the sun beating down on her. “Abby.” Her mother called out. She didn’t answer her.. She didn’t move. “Abby… princess.. You have to talk to me sometime.” Abby jolted up and looked at her mother.
“I am not your princess. Don’t you ever call me that ever again.”
“Abby..”
“I hate you!” She yelled. And then jumped to her feet… Maggie moved closer to her and Abby took off running down the street. Maggie just let her go.. She turned and went back in the house..
Luka started walking down the street to where the little girl was running. He walked until he saw her at a park. She was the only one there.. She sat on a swing swaying back and forth slowly. Her feet dragging in the sand. Luka hesitated and then walked over to where she was, sitting in the swing next to hers. She looked up for a second and then back down at her feet.
“You’re the new kid… across the street?”
“Yeah.”
“What do you want?”
“Sorry?”
“Why did you follow me?”
“I.. Wanted to see where you were going.”
Abby looked back up at him giggling.
“Why you laugh?”
“You.. Sound funny.” She said, still giggling.
“Do not.”
“Do too.”
“its my accent… I’m from Croatia.”
“Where’s that?”
“I don’t know.. Far away from here… across the ocean.”
“I’m Abby.” She said smiling.
“Luka.”
