Chapter 5: Summer Days and Nights
For the rest of the summer Luka and Abby spent every waking minute with each other. At Luka's. At the park. At Mrs. James, swimming in her pool with the other neighbor kids. At the lake.. Luka's dad took them. They even spent some days at Abby's... avoiding Maggie the whole time of course.
They spent endless nights atop Abby's roof.. which Luka's parents and Maggie didn't know about... What parent would let their child on the roof? Maggie? maybe.. but Mariana and Nathaniel. No way. Did they care? No. That's something Abby taught Luka. Besides Softball, which he is terrible at... she taught him to not always worry about what his mother would say. They would climb out Abby's window.. where a large tree was... From there they would climb to the roof.
They would sit side by side watching movies. The drive-in's screen could be seen from her roof. Some nights they would play cartoons.. other nights were comedies.. love stories... and then there were the horror movies which scared Abby and Luka to death. They would spend those nights with their hands over their eyes.. screaming when ever something sounded scary. After the movies finished they would climb back down the tree and into Abby's window. She would walk him downstairs and watch him run across the street. He would turn and wave to her before entering his house. Then they would go to bed, wake up the next day.. and do the same things all over again. They never got bored.. never got sick of each other.. never wanted a change.
The next few days were rainy ones.. which meant the days were spent at Luka's. His mom loved Abby. More than her own mother did. His dad liked her too. Although he wasn't home as much. He worked. Just like Abby's own father did. Only Mariana loved Nathaniel. She would never send him away... Abby loved being at their house. It made her feel like she was part of a real family. Because that's how they treated her. Like she was their daughter.
This afternoon the rain was light.. off and on. Abby and Luka were kneeling on the couch looking out the window... watching rain drops trickle down it. The mail man stopped at Abby's house.. and she got up from the couch. "Where are you going?" Luka asked.
"The mail man came..."
"Still think your dad is going to send you something?"
"He is Luka! and don't you say he isn't."
"You've been waiting all summer."
"He's going to write to me... are you coming?"
"Yeah." Luka nodded, and hopped off the couch. "I'm coming." They ran down the steps and across the street. Abby pulled the mail box's open and pulled out a bunch of envelopes.. all of them white, except one. It was a light blue color. Abby smiled, and dropped all of the other letters when she saw her name on the blue one. Luka quickly picked up the letters in a puddle, and shoved them back in the mailbox.
"I told you! I told you he would write me!"
"Its starting to rain hard again.. lets go back inside."
"Do you see this Luka? this is from my papa!" Abby said once the were back in the house. She sat on the couch, Luka taking the seat next to her. She tore it open, pulled out two pieces of paper and unfolded them. "Can you even read Abby?"
"Well.. yeah.. not that great though... you?"
"I'm ok at it.."
"You two want some lunch?" Mariana asked walking into the living room.
"Mrs. Kovac!" Abby said getting off the couch, and running toward her. "Will you help me with something?"
"Of course sweetie."
"Will you tell me exactly what this says? and then help me write one back?"
"What is it?"
"It's a letter from my papa."
