Her alcoholism is not the reason they have so many problems, it's because they don't talk to each other.
She assumed everything would be magically better when Luka came home. He assumed everything would be magically okay while he was gone. Why? Because that's what they want to believe. He has her on some stupid pedestal like she has no faults or weaknesses and she treats him like a cureall for all her problems.
And I'm done with this. Some of you want Luka to be a blameless victim who is perfect and never does anything wrong. He's just as flawed and screwed up as all the other characters on the show, this season's storyline included.

Luka is the only one Abby ever really talked to. I'm not saying that he's blameless but his faults come from the fact that he loves her too much and trusts her too much. Exactly how a husband, a loving one, would trust his spouse. Her faults come from the fact that she felt dependable. Are we supposed to believe her sobriety revolves around Luka? So whenever he's unavailable she drinks? Again, that's not love...it dependency. And she has to be independent first, needs to learn how to cope with things without drinking everytime something bad happens to her and he's not around.

Abby has always been independent....to a fault. Trusting Luka is the first chink that we have seen in that armor. She was learning to depend on him thoroughly all through her pregnancy....the child birth...and NICU era. Letting go and becoming a marital unit of support was something new to her....and she was loving it. Luka knew that. Five days after their wedding he is gone?? And for six months? Accessible only by cell phone at best...and then he is not there for her when something traumatic happens to Joe? He was dealing with his dad...surrounded by family. She was alone with a child. He knew that as well. Crappy PTB think that we could actually buy this story line?? Only Maura's outstanding acting ability could make it actually stand. I am still in awe of her for being able to make me care so much....and feel so heartbroken.

Knowing that she was loving being part of that situation doesn't mean that he should therefore assume that she'll fall to bits if it's disrupted. He left her happy, healthy and sober and it doesn't seem that she fired any warning shots across the bows to indicate that she was struggling. If he misjudged her strength she did nothing to correct him.
Did he stay away "too long"? For Abby, yes; do I think that's the point? No.

I can honestly that I don't really care about blame or fault or whatever anymore- I don't really care about the broken luby storyline anymore. It's how they move on from it that interests me- no more angst. I want ER family interactions, the return of Abby/Neela friendship, interesting patient storylines. Hell, i'd even be more interested in seeing gates/sam more then abby wondering if luka will come back etc etc again

I somewhat agree with you genna. Even though I think Abby is the one who has screwed up the most I suppose it doesn't matter who is more to blame. Like I said in my other post, I just want them BOTH to forgive each other and for Abby to make changes in her life to decrease the chances of this kind of stuff happening again. I hope this episode will show some improvement because I don't want to go into the hiatus with a completely miserable luby.
I also hope they handle her recovery in a realistic way. It would suck if they handled this like the writers did with Kirsten on The OC.

I would think that the fact that they have written the relapse so realistically means that there is a very good chance (strike permitting) that the recovery will also be written realistically.

And I agree, he got her to trust him, then he basically made her regret giving him that trust.

One quick note... Does anyone know why Sam was so upset at Abby after she confessed to all of them about her whereabouts? That was strange.

I just finished watching the episode and it was awsome. I have to say this season has been very good. I loved how they used the song "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera during the epi (Feels like it was forever ago when that song first came out). I don't know if anyone noticed but I was soooo happy when Dr. Meyers showed up and when Frank quoted I Love Lucy "Somebodies got some explaining to do" Gotta love Frank. But what was wrong with Sam? Don't be haten on Abby. Good epi it was worth watching!

Anyone else get the feeling that this is the last we will see of Abby on ER? The way she turned to look at the ambulance bay from the el steps..... I almost felt like she was taking a last look and was satisfied with leaving. LOVED, loved the make up scene with Neela. It felt so true and heartfelt. Was feeling a little hateful toward Sam. Forgetting my curiosity about a Sam/Gates hook up. Don't care if she doesn't show up for work ever again. BY the way, Abby never did show up drunk at work right??? Just hung over? And did I miss it?? Did we get the line about her talking to Luka every day???
