Thanks guys!! Some bad language in this chapter!! Chapter 5 Luka was momentarily frozen in shock as he took in the sight of the women in front of him. She looked so broken, so afraid. He looked over her body, quickly noticing that she was covered in bruises, all in various shades of purples, and he noticed what appeared to be a very new cut on her right cheek. She was wearing pyjamas, and Luka couldn't help himself for feeling foolish as he realized that even in her current state, she was still the most beautiful woman he'd eve seen. Finally snapping back to reality, Luka quickly ushered her into his apartment, shutting the door behind them. "Abby," he began, his voice low and urgent, "What happened? Who did this to you?" Pulling her over to the couch, his heart broke as he watched how painful it was just for her to sit down beside him. Abby thought about lying. About covering up for Richard. But she was tired of lying, and Luka was way too good at reading her to not figure out if she did lie to him anyway. So instead, in a small voice, while staring at the floor, she simply said, "Richard." Luka felt anger begin to rise in his body. He had never liked Richard Lockhart. He had always told himself it was because he didn't think he was good enough for Abby, but he had always felt something was...off. Images of Richard inflicting harm on Abby began to flood his mind, and it was almost more than he could take. Jumping up from the couch, he ran toward the door. "Luka!" Abby cried out in alarm at seeing the rage that twisted his features. "What are you doing?" "I'm going to go give that son of a bitch a taste of his own medicine!" Luka's eyes were ablaze with an anger that startled Abby. "No, Luka, please don't!" She captured his eyes with her own and noticed his softening a little. "Why the hell are you defending that bastard, Abby?" Luka cried in disbelief, his eyes searching her own intently. "Luka," Abby winced as she stood up from the couch and moved to where he was standing. "I am not defending him. You have to understand that." To emphasize her point, she grabbed his arm and gave it a squeeze. "But you have to understand that Richard is very powerful and if you go over there and beat the hell out of him, the only thing that will happen is he will wind up having you thrown in jail, and I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something like that happened to you because of me." Her eyes looked at him pleadingly as she released her hold on his arm. Luka sighed. She always had power over him. In that moment, he was sure she could have asked him anything and he would have been helpless over her. It's those eyes, Luka thought to himself, She always could get me with those eyes."Abby," he took her hand in his own, "You can't let him get away with this. He's the freaking Governor now for crying out loud, and people should know what a piece of shit he really is!" Rubbing small circles on her hand, he was amazed that touching her still did such amazing things to his heart. Looking up at him through tear-filled eyes, Abby sighed. "Luka, I appreciate what you're saying, I really do. It's just that if I try to go to battle with Richard, he'll win. He's so well-connected, and it will just be his word against mine. He can be extremely persuasive, and I'm just so tired of fighting. I don't want to fight anymore. I'm just so tired, Luka." As she spoke these words, she broke down, sobs overcoming her body. Luka pushed all thoughts of Richard Lockhart out of his mind, instead gathering the shaking woman in his arms and holding her, gently rocking her back and forth as she sobbed. He led them toward an arm chair where he sat down and pulled her into his lap. She rested her head on his shoulder and relished in the feeling of safety that his arms provided. They sat there, Luka rubbing her back and whispering soothing words into her hair, until he felt her fall asleep. When he felt certain that she was out, he carried her into his room and laid her gently on the bed. Covering her with a blanket, he couldn't help but smile to himself at the thought that Abby Wyczenski was in his bed.

Thanks guys!! Chapter 6 They sat there, Luka rubbing her back and whispering soothing words into her hair, until he felt her fall asleep. When he felt certain that she was out, he carried her into his room and laid her gently on the bed. Covering her with a blanket, he couldn't help but smile to himself at the thought that Abby Wyczenski was in his bed. Stirring from her sleep, Abby glanced around at her surroundings, confused at first as to where she was. Realizing Luka must have transferred her to his bed, she smiled, pulling the covers around her more tightly. She could always count on Luka to be there for her. Rolling over carefully trying to avoid as much pain as possible, Abby thought back over her long history with Luka Kovac. She still remembered the day that the handsome and cocky 16 year old showed up at her high school. She had heard from her friends that he, his mom, and his sister had recently moved to Chicago from Iowa, and remembers hearing rumblings that they had moved in order to flee an abusive father. Abby had immediately fallen for the dark-haired teenager, whom she found as mysterious as he was charming. For his part, Luka was completely taken with Abby Wyczenski. Yes, she was hot, all the guys on his wrestling team agreed, but she was kind and tender-hearted, and he found her desire to care for others wildly attractive. They began their high school relationship like any other pair of 16 year olds. Shy glances and smiles quickly led to heavy make-out sessions in her motel room while her mom worked one of her 3 jobs. As cocky and sarcastic as he was to everyone else, Luka had a soft spot in his heart for Abby, who he was always sure was too good for him. He always feared that one day she would realize that and dump him, so he tried unsuccessfully to guard his heart. Everything changed, however, at the end of their junior year, when Abby suddenly found herself pregnant. She had been determined to make her way out of the life she had and avoid a fate like her mother's. Luka reassured her that everything would be okay. That they could still finish high school and that he would work extra hours at the mechanic shop to save up and get them an apartment of their own. He even went out and bought a tiny onesie and presented it to her one night along with a simple silver ring, telling her that it was a promise that he would always love her and that they would be together forever. They never had the chance to find out if they could make it work, however. Eleven weeks into her pregnancy, Abby miscarried their baby. Fearing that now that she had no reason to stay with him she would immediately dump him, Luka slowly began pulling away from her. She begged him to talk to her, but he felt as if she would be better off without him. He knew he would only be holding her back in life. She was driven. She wanted to get out of their tiny town and move onto bigger and better things. One night in a mixture of alcohol-induced partying and a hidden desire to protect Abby from himself, Luka wound up sleeping with her best friend at a school party. News quickly spread to Abby. Luka would never forget the look on her face when she showed up at his apartment, begging him to tell her that it wasn't true. "Luka, don't say it. I know you love me. You're freaked out about losing the baby and I get that, but I know you don't want to throw away what we have. Please, Luka, just tell me it's not true." The pain in her eyes made Luka feel like vomiting, and he wanted nothing more than to hold her and tell her that he was sure that he would never love anyone else the way he loved her. Feelings of guilt and the unshakable idea that he didn't deserve her, however, made him force a look of indifference on his face. "I slept with her Abby. Sorry." Closing the door on her, he ran inside his apartment and emptied the contents of his stomach into the toilet as his tears burned his eyes. For months, Abby ignored him, and he pretended to be unaffected. Even when she started dating other guys. Luka simply grabbed the next willing cheerleader and made sure Abby would see enough to know that he wasn't mourning the loss of her. Instead, he would secretly corner any guy who he saw her with and threaten him that if he ever hurt Abby Wyczenski, he would kick their ass. He even made good on that promise a few times. He wanted to make sure no one else hurt her. He had done that enough, and he hated the thought of her suffering in any way.

Chapter 7 It was an unexpected tragedy that brought their lives back together. Word reached Chicago mid-way through their senior year that Luka's dad had once again overdosed on drugs, but this time would be his last. Luka had never spoken much about his relationship with his dad. Still, hearing the news that he was dead affected him more than he cared to admit. Returning to Iowa for the funeral with his mom and sister, he'll never forget the shock he felt surge through his body when none other than Abby Wyczenski walked through the doors of the tiny church, taking a seat next to him and resting her hand over his. It had been almost too much for him to comprehend. Why was she there? He had made sure that she would never care for him again, so what was she doing at his father's funeral, holding his hand and speaking soothing words to him as he finally broke down later at the grave site. From that day on they had been the best of friends. He knew he was foolish to ever hope she could love him in that way ever again. Still, he owed this friendship to her. She had opened her heart up enough to forgive him and invite him back into her life, and he was thankful for that. Now he would have to sit back as she shared stories of random dates with him, doing his best job to be supportive and not betray the incredible jealousy he felt. He had her back in his life, and that would have to be enough. When she had gotten into anything even the modelling she did for a while, he played the role of her body guard. Accompanying her to shoots, he would step in if any of the male models got a little too friendly. She would laugh at his protectiveness and kiss him on the cheek while thanking him for being such a great friend. It would sting. He watched as she paraded around in lingerie for the cameras, trying to suppress his attraction to her, and unsuccessfully trying to keep the memories of the night's they had spent together from flooding his mind. Luka knew he loved her. He also knew, unfortunately, that he was lucky enough that she had let him back in as a friend, and he would never ruin that by trying to bring the romantic aspect of their relationship back. So he had sadly resigned himself to love her from afar. Luka was awakened from his sleep by a sudden banging on his front door. Groggily, he pulled himself off the futon in his office and padded to the door.

Thanks you guys!! Chapter 8 "Luka?" Abby's panicked voice came from the doorway of his bedroom, causing him to turn around. "It's Richard! He must have figured out where I came. It's Richard." Her eyes were wide with fear and she had wrapped her arms around her body protectively. "I'll take care of him, Abby," Luka reassured her, setting his jaw as he moved toward the door, ready to do whatever was necessary to protect Abby. Throwing open the door with intensity, Luka was ready to tell Richard to go to hell, when he realized that it was not Richard. "Rebecca?" He was momentarily confused by the site of his girlfriend. "Yes, silly, who else were you expecting?" Rebecca laughed as she moved past Luka and into the apartment. Spotting Abby immediately, still standing in the doorway of Luka's bedroom wearing only her pyjamas, Rebecca's face turned into an expression of rage. "What the hell is she doing here, Luka?" She spit out her words, gesturing wildly toward Abby. "Relax, Rebecca, she stayed here last night. Nothing happened. She just needed a place to stay that was..." "Safe," Abby interrupted, moving toward Rebecca. Rebecca raised an eyebrow in confusion as she noticed Abby's bruised body. "What the hell happened to you?" she asked with an incredulous snort. "Rebecca, that's none of your business, just leave her alone," Luka warned, his eyes serious. "Really, Luka? Really?" Rebecca's tone was filled with disbelief as she turned back to her boyfriend. "I'm pretty sure it is my business when my boyfriend is having sleepovers with one of his ex girlfriends!" Abby felt bad for Luka. He was only trying to help her, and she didn't want to cause problems for him. As much as she had always disliked Rebecca, she didn't want to be the reason for Luka to feel any pain. "Rebecca, he's right. Nothing happened at all. He was just being a good friend and letting me stay here last night. He didn't even know I was coming. It was sort of an- um, emergency." Abby tried to reason with the girl. "You know, Luka, I really don't appreciate coming over to your apartment, where you won't even let me spend the night most of the time, and finding you half naked with Abby Wyczenski." Rebecca was glaring at Luka. "Rebecca, chill out. You're freaking out over nothing!" Luka was protesting, but Abby couldn't help but notice that he didn't seem all that upset. "Whatever, Luka! I'm out of here! I hope you and your whore are happy!" With that, Rebecca exited the apartment, slamming the door shut behind her. "Luka?" Abby looked at Luka's face, unable to read his emotions. "Aren't you going to go after her?" "Nah," Luka stated calmly, walking into the kitchen, and leaving a puzzled Abby standing in the hallway.

Thanks you guys, here's the next chapter!! Chapter 9 Following him into the kitchen, Abby raised an eyebrow as she watched him moving around the kitchen making breakfast. Noticing her enter, Luka gave her his signature half smile. "Are you hungry?" "Um, yeah, I guess I am," Abby nodded as she seated herself into a chair at the kitchen table. "Listen, Ab’s," Luka called over his shoulder as he turned the pieces of sizzling bacon in the skillet, "I think you should come into work with me today so I can keep an eye on you." "To the mechanic shop?" Abby inquired, sipping the coffee he set in front of her. "Yeah, you can just hang out in my office. I don't want you staying here alone in case he comes looking for you." Abby noticed Luka's eyes were serious as he continued preparing their meal. "I guess you're right, I'll just call Susan and tell her I can't go into work at the hospital today. I don't want anyone to see me like this," she gestured toward her bruises. Luka turned to face her and noticed the pained look on her face. "What's wrong, Abby?" He was immediately beside her, his hand rubbing up and down her arm. "It hurts," she sniffed, grimacing as the reality of just how much pain she was in began to once again set in. "Abby, look at me," Luka's tone was urgent as he lifted her face gently with his fingers, forcing her to meet his gaze. "Everything's going to be okay. I'm never going to let him hurt you again, alright?" Reaching over, he placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. As a single tear slid down her cheek, Abby looked into Luka's light eyes. "Thank you, Luka," she stated simply, as she allowed him to hold her for just a little while longer.
