Thanks guys!! Chapter 17 Abby pouted at him mischievously, and he had to fight the instincts his body was trying to urge him toward. "Whatever. Me, jealous of him? Come on. You may have been good friends, but he doesn't know you like I do." With that, Luka took a definitive bite of his pie. Abby's eyes became soft as she smiled at him. "You're right, Luka. No one does and no one ever will." With that, she reached across the table and gave his hand a quick squeeze, sending his heart rate soaring from her physical interaction with him. The rest of their lunch passed quietly, both of them enjoying each other's company as they talked about any and everything. When they were done, Luka suggested he take the rest of the day off to bring Abby back to his place and allow her to rest after the crazy last 24 hours she had endured. Abby reluctantly agreed, finally allowing herself to relax knowing that she would be safe with Luka. Pulling into his apartment complex, they were immediately met with the sight of Abby's red BMW being lifted onto a tow truck. Running toward the man who was driving the truck, Abby yelled to get his attention. "What the hell are you doing to my car?" "Sorry, lady," the gruff tow truck operator explained, "But this car has been re-possessed." "What do you mean re-possessed?" Luka asked angrily as he came to stand next to Abby. "The owner decided to sell it," the man answered, clearly annoyed at the interrogation he was receiving. "But I'm the owner!" Abby cried out in disbelief. "That's not what this paper says," the man's voice was quickly rising in anger. "Let me see that," Luka barked, angrily snatching the paper from the man's hands. As he looked over the paper, his face fell and he reluctantly met Abby's hopeful stare. "What, Luka?" Abby's tone was breaking, "What is it?" "Ab’s, did Richard buy you this car?" Luka's voice was soft. "Yes, but I made a lot of the payments and he told me he put it in my name," Abby's eyes began to fill with panic. "He lied. The car is just in his name. He's re-possessing it." Luka had to turn his face when he saw the look of hurt that was slowly taking over Abby's features. "Oh," was all she said softly, as she turned and began walking toward Luka's apartment. "Abby!" Luka called after her, jogging to catch up. "Ab’s, wait!" She was standing at his door staring at something when he caught up to her. "What's this?" Luka asked as he picked up a large manilla envelope that was simply labelled, Abigail Wyczenski. "You open it, Luka, please," she looked at him pleadingly, "I just- can you please open it?"

Here's another chapter! Thanks for the comments guys!! Chapter 18 Sighing, Luka opened the door to his apartment and waited until they were both seated on the couch before opening the envelope. "It's a letter from Richard," he said quietly. "Please read it to me, Luka," Abby shut her eyes, exhaustion and defeat apparent on her features. "Dear Miss Wyczenski," Luka began, his blood boiling as he spoke Richard's words. "I am taking the liberty of informing you that I have decided to formally end our engagement. I hope you are not too upset, but I feel this would be best. I will make sure to return the few items that you brought into this relationship as soon as possible." Abby laughed in disgust. "What a bastard!" "Abby, do you want me to finish this?" Luka's eyes searched her own in concern. "Why not? I may as well hear the rest of this absolute crap," Abby mumbled sarcastically. Sighing, Luka continued. "Please find a new place of residency immediately, as my home will no longer be an appropriate place for you to live. I will also make sure to close out our joint bank account. Please adjust your routine accordingly. Thank you for your cooperation. Sincerely, Governor Richard Lockhart." When he finished, Luka crumpled up the letter and threw it to the ground. "This guy has got to be kidding me!" Luka grumbled in disbelief. "I should have known better," Abby spoke coldly, her face staring forward, expressionless. "He's going to wipe out my bank account. I have nothing. Nothing!" At this, her voice broke and she absolved into tears. "We can fight him, Abby," Luka's face implored hers intensely. "We can't let him get away with this!" Abby shook her head. "No, Luka, it's all his. If he put the car in his name, I'm sure he did the same with the house, the furniture, and the bank account. Dammit! I can't believe I was so stupid!" Luka lifted her face gently with two fingers. "Abby, listen to me. You are not stupid. This man is evil, and you believed him when he told you those things were in both of your names, because you loved him. He knew what he was doing. You are just too good to have even suspected something like that from someone you loved." He gently stroked her face with his fingers, wiping away the tears as they fell. "What am I going to do, Luka?" Abby faced him, her face twisted in agony. "I have nothing! I have no car, no place to live, no furniture, no money. I have nothing!" Gently pulling her into his arms and allowing her head to fall against his chest, Luka kissed the top of her head. "No, Ab’s, that's not true. You have me."

Chapter 19 "What a Bastard!" The voice of Susan Lewis rose in disbelief as she read through the article. Abby couldn't help but smile at Susan's outburst, even as her heart sank at having to see the article again. Luka had been the first to discover it. He had a routine of reading the paper with his breakfast before going to work, and had immediately noticed the small box on the front page that read: "Governor-Elect Lockhart calls off Engagement."Quickly rushing through the article, Luka's snorted incredulously as he read the pious and completely false statements from Richard. "Abigail and I have the utmost respect for one another, but at this time, we feel it is best to end our engagement. We shall always love each other and remain the closest of friends.""Respect my ass," Luka muttered to himself as he threw the paper down on the table and began an angry assault on his unsuspecting bowl of Corn Flakes. "What are you talking about?" Abby asked innocently as she breezed into the kitchen in her scrubs, eager to get back to work and try to return to some form of normality. "Nothing," Luka quickly mumbled, trying to fold up the paper before she could catch on to what had sparked his remarks. Unfortunately for Luka, it was too late. Snatching the paper hastily from his hand, her eyes went wide at the sight of the article, which was accompanied by one of their gaudy engagement photos. Luka watched her closely, worried at the reaction it would spark in her. His fears were relieved, though, as he watched a small smile spread across her face. "Abby?" Luka's voice was full of confusion. Unable to suppress a small giggle, Abby began to pour herself some cereal as she explained. "Yeah, yeah, this all sucks. Richard is a liar and no one will ever know the real reason we broke off our engagement." Seeing Luka about to protest, she rushed on, "Except for you, of course," she smiled at him. "And maybe Susan, but still, yeah, it sucks. The funny thing is, though, the only thing I could think when I saw this article is how Richard always hated this picture of himself. Said it made him look old and fat, and you know? He was right!" She giggled again, and Luka began to stare at her as if she had grown an extra head. "It's just funny," she defended through a mouthful of cereal. "You wouldn't understand. It's a girl thing." Luka had only nodded, unable to refrain from smiling for too much longer. Abby's mood was so vastly different from the previous afternoon, and he was happy to see her smiling.

Thanks guys!! Chapter 20 Now back at work, Abby had decided to also confide in Susan, her closest friend at work, knowing that she would keep it quiet. "Abby," Susan looked at her with sympathetic eyes, "If you need anything, Carter and I would be more than happy to help you. Seriously." Abby smiled at the petite woman. "Thanks, Sus, but I'm fine, really. Luka is taking really good care of me, I promise." Luka. At the mention of his name, Abby felt a wave of emotions rush over her. He was being beyond amazing. Abby felt truly lucky to have him in her life. "So, didn't you and Luka date back in high school?" Susan raised an eyebrow at her as they walked through the hall toward the cafeteria. "Yes, but that was a long time ago, and we're just friends now. Like you and I are friends." Abby knew that was not true. She and Luka were friends, but there was always something...she didn't quite know what else it was, but she did know that she in no way looked at Luka the way she looked at Susan. "Sure, Abby," Susan smiled teasingly, "And Carter and I are just friends, too." "Ha ha," Abby dead panned. "So, is Luka going to need a new sexy name soon?" The girls picked up trays and made their way through the lunch line. "I remember meeting him at your engagement party. He's hot, Ab’s. Oooh! McHottie?" Abby rolled her eyes. "No, no not for Luka. He's just...Luka." There were those same feelings, threatening to spill over if Abby didn't put a stop to it and quickly. "McSexy?" Susan ignored her desires and kept rambling off names as they paid for their food and made their way to a table in the crowded lunch area. "Susan, seriously. We are just friends. He's being really amazing right now, and I don't know what I'd do without him, but we tried to date before, and it didn't work out." Even as she spoke the words, Abby still felt the pain of thinking of Luka cheating on her with Julia. Those thoughts were quickly replaced, however, with thoughts of the current Luka. This Luka was the guy who took her to the bank after she found out Richard had wiped her account clean, and helped her set up her own account, even throwing in the first $50 deposit and telling her she couldn't let it be empty. This Luka was the guy who was letting her live with him indefinitely, not accepting her offer to help with the rent or utilities at all, and only grinning when she offered to do the cooking. This Luka was the guy who would drive her to and from work everyday until she could save up enough to buy a car. This Luka was the guy who had opened the door when Richard sent Abby's possessions as promised, later that same day. This Luka was the guy who had held her when they realized that all he had sent was a small box containing a few clothing, toiletry, and personal items. This Luka was the guy who told her she was wrong when she cried that her life had been reduced to a single box. This Luka was the guy who told her that her worth was so much greater than any box could ever contain. This Luka was the man she had fallen in love with many years ago. The man she had compared every other boyfriend since him to. The man she knew she could always count on.

Thanks guys!! [but we tried to date before, and it didn't work out." Even as she spoke the words, Abby still felt the pain of thinking of Luka cheating on her with Julia. Humm, seems things won´t be easy. Is there a scar I see in her heart? I like these AU fanfiction, its like Goran and Maura got other jobs and are co-stars again.

Thanks you guys!! Chapter 21 Susan's sudden jump up from the table jerked Abby out of her reflective state, and she was grateful for the interruption from a line of thought that was quickly taking her down a dangerous path. "Carter!" Susan gushed as she threw herself into her husband's arms. John Carter was indeed Dreamy, well to Susan anyway. Abby smiled at the two as they embraced and kissed each other, oblivious to the world around him. Susan had met Carter at a bar one night and ended up taking home somebody from the hospital that she was beginning work at the next day. Their embarrassment had quickly passed, however, and one year later, Abby served as a bridesmaid at their large wedding. "Hi, Abby," Carter smiled easily as he sat next to Susan. "Hi, Dr. Carter," Abby returned his smile. Anywhere but the hospital, Abby felt perfectly comfortable calling him by his first name, but she insisted on formally addressing him when they were within County’s walls. Their lunch passed quickly. Carter had seen the article as well, but didn't press for any further information when he received a warning glance from his wife. Abby was glad to be back at work. She loved being a nurse, and even though she was, in some ways, starting over, she knew that at the end of the day, she had still worked hard to get where she was, and no one would ever able to take that from her. Not even Richard. Waiting outside the hospital on a bench after her shift was complete, Abby pulled her jacket tightly around her. It was Mid-November, and Chicago was having a chilly start to the first days of winter. After 15 minutes, she finally saw Luka running toward her, a worried expression on his face. "Ab’s, I'm so sorry I'm late. I got a late costumer at the shop, and then stupid traffic was ridiculous, and I got stuck behind this moron who thought he was taking a Sunday drive, because I swear the dude never went faster than 30 miles an hour. And-" "Luka," Abby smiled as she interrupted him. "It's fine. I appreciate you coming to get me." "You don't have to thank me." Luka explained calmly as he led her toward his car. "I like taking care of you." He hoped he hadn't let her read his heart too much with those words. Turning to observe her face, he was relieved to see an amused expression on her features. "Luka Kovac," she teased. "You aren't just doing all of this to try to get in my pants, are you?" She raised her eyebrow at him in mock seriousness. Ignoring the first responses that came to his mind, Luka grinned. "Abigail, that's so like you. Always thinking about sex with me. Not that I blame you, I'm so handsome and irresistible. But still, I'm not just a piece of meat, you know?" Ducking the playful slap she intended for his arm, Luka instead grabbed Abby and brought her close to him, putting an arm around her as they made their way through the parking lot. Seeing her curious eyes, he shrugged. "I thought you looked a little cold." Abby could only smile and shake her head as she cuddled up closer to Luka's side, loving the feeling of his arm tightening around her. "What am I going to do with you?" "Well, that's up to you, babe," he winked at her suggestively, but then irrupted in his own laughter as she was successful this time in playfully punching his arm.
