They walked a little farther along and soon came upon a bench. It was situated right on the lakefront path, facing the frozen water. Right before they reached it, she stopped, frozen to the ground. When he felt her hand pull his, he turned to face her, wondering if she had finally realized. He walked back towards her and saw tears forming in the corners of her eyes.
“Luka…” she whispered breathlessly before looking away. She couldn’t hold back any longer. Tears began to stream down her cheeks.
He decided to take the risk. He pulled her towards him and wrapped his arms around her in a tight embrace. And she let him. For the first time in as long as either of them could remember, he stood there with his protective arms around her, shielding her from the world. And she cried. She cried on his shoulder, eventually allowing him to support her when she couldn’t bear her own weight any longer. He pulled away only for a moment, to wipe the tears from her eyes before he wrapped her up again, somehow at the same time telling her what he had wanted her to know all along.
Slowly, and without removing his protective arms from her waist, he led her to the bench. They sat down on the cold seat, and this time, it was she who reached for him. It had finally happened, he broke her down. She continued to cry as he held her, the both of them staring across the dark water.
She pulled away, as if changing her mind about allowing him to comfort her, but he wouldn’t let her.
“Luka, you can’t want this. I’m a mess, broken and full of mistakes.” Another tear fell from her cheek as she looked at him with her heart.
“Don’t I get to decide that?” He looked at her, his face almost pleading.
“No, you don’t. I couldn’t live with myself if I hurt you like that again. You know that you deserve better than me.”
“Why can’t you understand? Abby, I chose you. I love you. With all your mistakes and imperfections. It’s you that I want to be with. And that’s
my choice.”
“How can you forgive me, just like that? I did the worst possible thing to you, I’m a terrible person. Can’t you understand that I can’t forgive myself for what I did? I don’t know if I will ever be able to!” And with that, a fresh flow of tears streamed down her face. By now she was standing, as if ready to run. But he wouldn’t allow her to get off that easily. He needed her to forgive herself if she was ever going to love him again. He too stood up and reached for her. When she held back, he knew it was now or never.
He pulled the small box from his jacket pocket. The gold ribbon looked very out of place on the gray February night. She stared at it for a moment, and when she didn’t reach for it, she placed it in her hand. She opened it slowly, as if she was afraid of what she might find. Inside was a bracelet, silver with a heart, simple. And once again, it took her a moment to remember. Of anything, this had to be the biggest surprise that night. How could he have remembered all these years? She had picked out this very bracelet before their first Valentine’s Day. Luka never got the chance to give it to her that year. Had he kept it all this time? Why wouldn’t he have taken it back once they broke up? Slowly she lifted it out of the box and looked at the heart. There, engraved on the backside read
Volim te, zauvijek “Luka, what…” she let her voice trail off.
“Abby, I have loved you for seven years. Through everything we’ve endured, my love has always been as strong as it was that first night. I’ve kept this bracelet in the hope that one day, I would be able to give it to you. The words on the back, they say
I love you, forever. Nothing could be truer. Please, just let me love you. And love me back. That is all I have ever wanted from you, for us. Let go of everything in the past, they were mistakes. And right now, we are here, and all I can ask of from you is your promise to love me in return.”
She looked at him, tears still shining on her cheeks. She didn’t say anything, didn’t move. Then slowly, she pulled him towards her and brushed her lips against his. They lingered, both cherishing the first kiss with the one they loved. She pulled back slightly.
“I’m so sorry, for everything. Luka, I never stopped loving you.”
This time, he leaned in, pulling her back towards him. He bent his head towards hers and kissed her again, this time expressing all his love in that single passionate kiss.
