Prologue It is sometimes interesting to explore the notion of "What if?" What if I had gone to a different college, taken that job, accepted the date with guy? How different would your life be? What might lie at the end of the road not taken?
Certainly those of us on this board are familiar with Luby Lore (the disastrous "first time around," Carter's interference, Maggie, etc.) and while we are all definitely happy that Luka and Abby found their way back together, I pose the following thought: what if Abby dated Carter before Luka came to County General? What if it was her growing friendship with Luka that made Abby think twice about her relationship with Carter? How might that have changed Luka and Abby's fate?
This doesn't mean Abby and Luka won't wind up together, but wouldn't it be interesting to think about how different the journey might have been to them getting there?

Abby blew smoke circles and watched them drift and disappear into the muggy summer night. She resorted to smoke circles when she was bored. She heaved a huge sigh and looked at her watch for the umpteenth time. She took another drag on her cigarette and was about to start the next round of circles when she heard her name. She turned and saw Carter coming towards her.
“Sorry,” he said. “Weaver had a few things to tell me.”
Abby nodded and stubbed out her cigarette. Carter gave her a somewhat stern look.
“I thought you quit.”
Abby ran her hand across her forehead shook her head, her brown hair fluttering in the late evening breeze.
“I’ve been having a bad week.”
The two walked along in silence, the sounds of the city enveloping them as they made their way to Doc Magoos.
“You know you might think about more constructive outlets--”
Abby rolled her eyes, her body tensing as they started to fall into the same routine. “Christ, Carter, don’t start with me.”
Carter held up his hands and shook his head.
“Abby, you’re the one who keeps saying you want to quit.”
“Yea, well, I’ll quit when I’m ready.” She stopped and exhaled sharply. “Listen, I’m, I’m sorry. Let’s not fight.”
Carter gazed at her for a moment before he placed his hand on her shoulder and rubbed it for a few moments.
“Deal,” he finally said as he kissed her on the forehead. He held the door of Doc Magoos open for her and they settled into a booth near the window. Neither of them said anything as they perused menus, though they both already knew that they wanted.
Carter and Abby had been dating a little over a year. Abby was a med student and met Carter during her ER rotation. Actually, they met at AA; Abby the recovering alcoholic and Carter still reeling from being stabbed in the ER found himself addicted to pain meds. The relationship had started out as common ground, two people fighting their demons individually and together. And it had worked; they understood each other on so many different levels. However, somewhere along the line, the balance had shifted. Carter got the upper hand with his addiction, but Abby had started casually drinking again after a series of setbacks. Her bipolar mother, Maggie, had resurfaced, wreaking havoc on her life. Then her ex reneged on their deal to pay for her med school and she had to go back to being nurse, though not in OB, but the ER, just until she could get enough money together to finish her last year. Abby had started casually drinking again, just as a release for everything she was going through. She hid it from Carter for a while, but slowly he discovered her dirty little secret. She got back on the wagon, but she sometimes felt like he was hanging her fall over her head. She had slowly started to feel that Carter wasn’t so much supportive, but rather that he was trying to fix her, put her back together again like she was Humpty Dumpty and had fallen off the wall. Whether it was drinking or going back to school or smoking or take your pick, he almost always had something to say. Underneath it all, she did love him, and in many ways felt like he was the best thing to happen to her. Yet, she could still hear Debbie Doubter in the back of her mind telling her that he would never think she was good enough and she just better hang on as long as he would let her.
Abby flipped the menu down and looked out the window to the ambulance bay. There was still steady traffic streaming in and out of the ER.
“I think I’m gonna have the grilled chicken sandwhich,” Carter said. “What about you?”
“Ah, I just think a burger and fries.”
Abby took a sip of her water that the waitress had just set down in front of her.
“So what did Weaver want?”
Carter leaned back, the vinyl seat burping beneath him.
“We’ve got a new attending starting tomorrow. Dr. Kovac.”
“Kovac? What is that, Russian?”
Carter gulped his own water. “Croatian.”
“Where’s he coming from?”
“He was somewhere in the burbs for a while. Wanted a change of pace, according to Weaver.”
“God…and he chose County? What is he, a masochist?”
Carter chuckled. “Well maybe by the time he figures out what he’s gotten himself into, it’ll be too late.”
Abby clucked her tongue and smiled.
“Guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

Chap 2
Luka stood in front of Doc Magoos facing the ambulance bay, somewhat apprehensive. The sun shone brightly and in the distance, he could hear the plaintive wail of sirens, which he knew was his cue. Taking a deep breath, Luka adjusted his sunglasses and began to make his way toward County. He was starting to wonder if this was such a good idea after all. He’d had it pretty good out in Northbrook. Cush attending position, regular work hours, far more money than if he stayed at Country 20 years.
Still, he felt himself getting complacent. He hadn’t become a doctor to make money. He’d always been a problem solver, and solving medical problems had fascinated him. Certainly coming to Chicago and settling into a stable routine had been a welcome respite after…everything. But he needed a jolt and a tour of duty at an urban hospital would certainly do the trick.
Luka walked into triage and slowly looked around. Junkies, prostitutes, drowsy children and babbling brooks filled the room. He smiled. He was ready.
Drawing up sharply, he walked up to the admit desk and smiled shyly at the group of nurses standing there. He was oblivious to the dropped jaws and dreamy gazes he elicited.
“Hi,” he drawled in his whisper-soft Croatian accent. “I’m Dr. Kovac, the new attending. Can you tell me where to find the lounge?”
“I’ll show you,” Randi volunteered quickly as she ran around to where Luka as standing and grabbed his arm. All eyes turned to Randi, envious she’d gotten first touch.
Luka nodded and allowed her to lead him to the lounge.
“Thanks,” he smiled.
Luka and Randi started for the lounge when Randi turned back to the group and threw them a wink over her shoulder. She turned back and started chatting away to Luka.
“That is one tall drink of water,” Chuny finally managed.
“Is it too late to divorce Al?” Lydia wondered.
“Doug Ross, who?” Lily uttered.
Abby came around to the desk just then and stared at the assembled group looking longingly toward the Lounge.
“What--” she twitched around quickly, trying to get a glimpse at what they were so fascinated by. “What are you guys looking at?”
“The new attending,” Yosh said. “He’s gorgeous.”
“Ok, can you say hunk?” Randy sighed as she came back to the desk.
Abby put the chart she was holding in the rack, ignoring them, her mind on getting a quick smoke.
Weaver came up the desk, rankled that everyone was standing around.
“Doesn’t anyone have any patients?!” she barked. The group quickly dispersed and Abby reached into the pocket of her jacket, clutching for the cigarette she thought she’d put in there earlier.
“I’m taking a break, Jerry,” she said as she headed to the lounge.
Abby pushed open the door and did a double take as she drank in Luka Kovac, standing at his locker adjusting his tie. The nurses had been right. He was the very definition of tall, dark and handsome, and even that description didn’t do him justice. His thick, jet black hair was streaked blonde along his temples and his dark blue eyes were deep and soulful. He heard her come in and turned.
“Hi,” he said, grinning. “I’m Dr. Kovac. New attending.”
Abby finally found her voice. “Uh, yea I heard.” She realized how stupid that sounded. “Um, I mean, Dr. Carter told me.” She reached over and held out her hand. “Abby. I’m Abby.”
“Nice to meet you, Abby,” he said, taking her hand and giving it a firm pump.
Abby tucked a stray hair behind her ear and went to grab her pack from her locker.
“Um, yea, you too. Welcome to County.”
Luka closed his locker and clipped his ID to his white coat. “Thanks. See you out on the floor,” he called out over his shoulder.
************************************
It had been a busy day, even for the ER. Abby’s shift was over and she was getting her things out of her locker when Luka came into the lounge.
“Hi, Abby,” Luka said as he went to his own locker and opened it.
“Rough first day, huh?”
Luka shrugged and took a swig out of the bottle of water he’d taken from his locker.
“We didn’t lose any patients. I’d say that was a pretty good day.”
Abby stood up.
“Shift’s not over.”
Luka screwed the cap back on the bottle.
“I’ve got a good feeling.”
Abby adjusted the strap of her bag.
“Guess we’ll have to start calling you Miss Cleo.”
Luka looked at her, confused.
“Who?”
Abby started to explain then thought better of it.
“Ah, nothing. Just a joke.” She went to open the door and looked back.
“You on tomorrow?”
Luka nodded.
“Seven a.m.”
Abby nodded slowly. “Me, too. See you then.”
“Have a good night.”
“Thanks,” Abby called out then headed for home.
