This story is so real, I love the exchange between Luka and Abby. My fav passage: " I don't want to be a consolation prize." Luka, you are so right, Abby will love you so much if she understands how precious she is for you.You 've never tried to fix her, like snotty Carter did. Waiting for the next chapter which should b e kinda "interesting", I know. Great work!

Dawn was just breaking and Luka was sitting quietly at his kitchen table replaying the events of last night. Abby, sitting there in the moonlight, looking more breathtaking than ever. They’d been avoiding each other for so long, not trusting themselves to be alone together. And then to see her there waiting for him…
But more than that were the words. They had finally voiced that unspoken poem between them…that bond. And he wanted her…God, how he wanted her. He’d played that film in his head so many times, it literally brought tears to his eyes. But he also knew she needed to work through her demons with Carter and he had to be sure she was looking to him for more than comfort while she did that. He took a sip of his coffee and plopped his chin in his hand, lost in his thoughts of her.
“Hi.”
Luka turned to see Abby standing shyly in one of his t-shirts, her cheek wrinkled from sleep, her shimmering brown hair a lovely tousle of bed head. He smiled.
“Sleep ok?”
She nodded and padded over to the table and sat down across from him.
“How long have you been up?”
“About an hour. Couldn’t really sleep.”
“I told you to take the bed. The couch couldn’t have been that comfortable.”
Luka looked down into his coffee for a moment before a wry smile formed on his lips.
“It wasn’t because of the couch.”
Abby opened her mouth to say something, but realized there really wasn’t anything to say. She knew what he meant.
“What time are you on?” she asked.
“Nine. You?”
“Same.” She looked down at Luka’s shirt. “I should really stop home and shower though.”
“I can give you a lift.”
Abby bit her bottom lip. “Ok.”
Luka stood and picked up his coffee mug. “Want some?” “Oh, no, I’ll get some at the Roach Coach. They’ve got this toffee…thing that I really like.”
“Toffee thing?”
“Yea, it’s this flavored…thing.”
Luka couldn’t help but laugh and Abby joined in. She stood and went in the direction of the bedroom. “I should get dressed.”
Luka nodded and waited for her to put back on the long black dress she’d been wearing when she’d come over. They drove in silence on the way to Abby’s, instead holding each other’s hands and sneaking shy glances at one another. Luka pulled up to her apartment and Abby’s heart sank.
“Oh, no,” she murmured when she saw Carter leaning up against her front door. He hadn’t shaved and looked like he hadn’t slept. When he saw Abby get out of Luka’s car, he drew up sharply.
“I was calling you all night. Where were you?” Carter fumed quietly.
Abby held up her hand.
“Carter--”
Carter looked over her shoulder at Luka who had also gotten out of the car.
“You were with him, weren’t you? I knew it,” Carter said, shaking his head. “I knew it. So this is why you said no, huh? So you could run straight to him?”
“Carter, it’s not like that--” Abby tried to explain, but Carter wouldn’t let her.
“I’ve seen the way he’s always looking at you, when he thinks no one is looking. He’s been after you since day one!”
“Carter, please, calm down--” “You want me to calm down?! How can you expect me to be calm?”
Luka finally spoke up. “Carter, she just needed a place to stay.”
“You expect me to believe that?” Carter clenched his fists. “You son of a bitch,” he snarled as he charged toward Luka. Luka reacted too late to Carter’s rampage towards him and he tumbled to the ground.
“Stop it! Stop it both of you!” Abby yelled.
The two didn’t hear her. Carter managed to get a few punches in to Luka’s face before Luka managed to throw Carter off of him and get to his feet. Carter too got to his feet and went after Luka again. Luka cold-cocked Carter, who whipped around and crumpled to the ground. Both men were bloody and panting heavily. Abby had her head in her hands, stunned by what had just happened.
“I’m sorry, Abby,” Luka said. Carter was still sitting on the ground, holding his jaw.
“You should both get checked out,” she said curtly, before she reached into her purse and grabbed her keys.
“Abby!” Carter called out, right before she slammed the door. ****************** Word got around the ER about the engagement that never was and the ensuing brawl. Luka apologized to Abby again, which she accepted and told him he was right about her needing some time to sort things out. Carter was openly hostile to Abby, refusing to talk to her unless it was work related, and even then being dismissive, sometimes nasty. A few months passed and the next thing Abby heard, Carter had run off to Africa to work with a relief program.
Abby concentrated on work and on being alone for a while, taking lots of long walks along the lakefront and gazing out the window a lot from her apartment. She knew ending things with Carter had been the right choice. She didn't feel guilty about that, though part of her wished things hadn't turned so nasty. However, that was Carter's cross to bear, because she was at peace. She realized during that time that her feelings for Luka had remained unchanged. She knew she wanted to be with him…that she was supposed to be with him. Finally, one night, she took a deep breath and called him. After some awkward small talk, they agreed to go for a walk on the lake.
The moonlight was dancing across the water and a balmy breeze washed over them as they strolled leisurely through the night.
“I’ve missed you,” he finally said.
Abby didn’t say anything for a few moments.
“Me too,” she replied.
They continued on in silence.
“I want to thank you,” Abby said.
“What for?”
“For not making love to me that night. Most guys would have.”
“I’m not most guys.”
“I know.”
Luka stopped and gently touched Abby’s elbow, pulling her back to him.
“You have no idea how hard it was.” He shoved his hands in the pockets of his jeans and looked out at the water. “It’s hard now.”
Abby raised her hand to his cheek and caressed it. He closed his eyes, savoring the moment.
“Do you remember that you promised me a when, not an if?
Luka opened his eyes, searching for what he hoped to find in hers.
“Of course.”
“I hope the when is now.”
Wordlessly, Luka pulled a willing Abby toward him and drew her into a kiss. They melted into each other, intoxicated but what they felt surging between them.
“Let’s go home,” he whispered.
To be continued…

That's brilliant,Lubylubylu. The fight between Carter and Luka reminded me of the one in "Secrets and Lies" when they were fencing. Carter started the fight and was utterly ridiculous! I like Abby's reaction when she wants to take her time and not rush before starting a relationship with Luka. Your style is beautiful and appealing. Thank you.
