Oh,man, I really don't know why I haven't read this fic before! Must be blind ! It's so good! I love the mixture of sadness and nice banter! When these two are together, they don't need words! Great body language! Abby is going to dump smug Carter, even though it takes some time to date Luka! The guy isn't even able to go with her to listen to her favourite band! Gamma's charity balls must be soooo more exciting!

Abby slipped her stethoscope from around her neck and placed it gently on the top shelf of her locker. She rolled her neck around and groaned slightly. It had been a brutal 13-hour shift, and all she wanted was to stand in a hot shower before falling into bed.
Except tomorrow afternoon, she’d be graduating from med school. A particularly wealthy terminal cancer patient had come into the ER a few months earlier and had taken quite a liking to Abby. The guy had no family, so he left the bulk of his estate to charity, and a nice chunk of change to Abby. At first, she was stunned and refused to accept it, but then she realized she could use the money to finally get ahead. She paid off all her debts and got back into med school. And now, here she was…just hours away from graduation. It scared her to think that after all these years, all the stops and starts, Abby would finally be Dr. Lockhart.
The door to the lounge swung open and suddenly, Luka was standing there. He looked down sheepishly, and Abby quickly looked away, suddenly fascinated by the pocket of her sweater hanging on a hook inside her locker.
“Hi,” Luka said quietly as he crossed over to his locker.
“Hi,” Abby responded, fiddling with the imaginary object inside the pocket.
Things had been awkward between Abby and Luka since that night in front of her car. They had both felt the electricity and it scared them both. Even though she’d never touched Luka, Abby had felt like she’d betrayed Carter, the connection with Luka that night was that powerful. And she felt from him that he wanted her, too, but knew it just wasn’t possible to allow those feelings. And while they’d never spoken about it, they had gone out of their way to avoid each other, speaking to each other only about work related topics. Abby had thrown herself into med school, quit smoking and rededicated herself to her relationship with Carter. Luka had started dating a cardiologist and Abby tried to squelch the stabs of jealousy that gnawed at her whenever she saw Luka and the pretty blond doctor together. And being alone with him now was almost more than Abby could bear.
“So you graduate tomorrow.” “What?” Abby snapped back to the present.
“Your graduation? It’s tomorrow, right?”
Abby grabbed her purse and slammed her locker shut.
“Oh, yea, right. In the afternoon.”
Luka adjusted the collar of his coat.
“Congratulations.”
Abby looked down at her shoes before she lifted her eyes to Luka’s.
“Thank you,” she said sincerely.
Luka threw his stethoscope around his neck.
“You’re going to be a great doctor, Abby.” Luka and Abby stood staring at each other for a moment before Luka smiled slightly and walked out of the lounge. Abby thought her knees would buckle beneath her. She grabbed a hold of the nearest chair and sank down into it.
“Get a hold of yourself,” she whispered. “And get overt this…whatever it is.”
She sat for a few moments and inhaled a couple of times before shakily getting to her feet and going home.
*************************** She had finally done it. She had graduated and was now officially a doctor. Abby still had trouble grasping the concept, sometimes running her fingers languidly over the dark blue stitching of her name against the brilliant white lab coat.
Abby was sitting at the table waiting for Carter to get back from the restroom. They were celebrating her graduation and Carter had been acting weird all night.
“Hey,” she said when he finally reappeared. “That’s like the fourth time you’ve gone to the bathroom. You ok?”
He nodded.
“Yea, I’m fine.” He swallowed and looked around. “I already paid the check, so you ready to go?”
Abby nodded and he came around to pull her chair out for her. They drove to his place, making small talk and were sitting on his couch facing each other when it happened.
Carter picked up her left hand and laced his fingers through it.
“I’m really proud of you,” he said. “The drinking, the smoking…becoming a doctor. You’ve come such a long way.”
Something about the way he said that rankled Abby. What was she broken and now she was whole?
“Ok,” she said slowly, not sure where this was leading.
Carter took a deep breath.
“And, I just…I love you Abby and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.” He then went into his pocket and extracted a small blue velvet box. “Abby, will you marry me?” he asked as he opened the box to reveal an antique gold diamond ring. “It was Gamma’s,” he said as he took it out of the box. “And now…I want you to have it.”
Abby looked down at the ring, stunned. Carter was asking her to marry him? Had she heard that right? Abby’s heart began to race and her palms became hot and itchy. It felt like her whole life was flashing before her eyes; her mother, Richard, booze…Luka. Luka. Abby licked her lips and looked up at Carter, tears shimmering in her eyes. She shook her head slowly.
“I’m sorry, Carter,” she choked. “I can’t…I can’t marry you.”
She flew off the couch and grabbed her purse, headed for the door. Carter ran after her and grabbed her arm.
“Abby. Abby! Come on Abby, talk to me! What’s going on?”
Abby wiped away the tears, which were now cascading down her face like a waterfall. “This…this isn’t right. You and…me. It’s not right. It never was.”
Carter’s face was a mix of confusion and sadness.
“But we…love each other--”
“Sometimes that’s not enough,” she said quietly, cutting him off. She wiped away more tears and gave Carter a sad smile.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered before she ran out the door. Luckily a cab had just pulled up and she flagged it down. Carter was panting after her and caught up with her just as she opened the cab door.
“Abby, please, don’t do this. Let’s talk, figure this out--”
“I’ve gotta go, Carter,” Abby said before she yanked the door shut. The cab pulled away and Abby glanced back to see Carter standing dejectedly in the middle of the street. **************
Abby grasped the railing and looked anxiously down the street, searching for some sign of him. She had been sitting on Luka’s stoop for the past hour, waiting for him to show. She held out some shred of hope that he wasn’t spending the night with Laura. Not tonight, especially tonight, not when she had so much to tell him. She laid her head down in her hands and breathed deeply. Finally, she looked up and saw Luka loping down the street towards her.
“Abby,” he called out, a concerned look spreading across his handsome face.
“Hi,” she said feebly.
“Are you ok?” he asked, his brow wrinkled.
She bit her bottom lip and nodded.
“Yea.”
Luka dug his keys out of his pocket with one hand and helped Abby stand with the other.
“Come…come on, let me get you inside. How long have you been out here?”
“About an hour. I wasn’t sure you’d come. I thought you might be…”
“Oh, uh, we broke up.”
Abby closed her eyes, silently wondering if this wasn’t all some kind of serendipity. Luka gently brought Abby inside and flipped on a small table lamp, bathing the room in a soft yellow glow. He turned to look at her and they were facing each other, mere inches separating them.
“Can I get you some--”
“I broke up with Carter.”
Luka stopped and stared at Abby for a moment, dazed.
“What?” he finally croaked.
Abby took a deep breath, inhaling Luka’s scent, almost intoxicated by the richness of it.
“He, he, asked me to marry him tonight and I…” Abby fumbled for the words. “I couldn’t” she finally finished. “Because of you.”
Luka stood still, disbelieving the words he heard coming from her mouth.
“Abby--”
“I, Luka, I…I love…you. I couldn’t marry Carter because…I love you.” She’d said it, those words she’d been feeling for so long. Saying it out loud to him made it all so incredibly real.
Slowly, Luka reached out to caress Abby’s cheek and she closed her eyes and tilted her face until it was cupped within his palm. Stealthily, he drew her to him and she opened her eyes, her breath coming in impossibly short puffs. Silently, he bent down and his trembling lips found hers. It was a slow, sweet fire that ignited between them in that instant. Luka felt alive for the first time in years and Abby felt like a new person. They continued to caress each other’s lips, afraid they might die if they parted. Abby went to unbutton Luka’s shirt when he gently closed his hand around her wrist. Reluctantly, he pulled back and looked at Abby.
“What? What’s wrong?” she asked, afraid.
Luka took her face in both his hands and searched it long and hard before he spoke.
“Abby,” he breathed. “As much as I want to make love to you right now, I don’t want to be a consolation prize--”
“But you won’t--”
He placed a thumb over her mouth to silence her.
“When we make love for the first time, I only want there to be us and no one else.”
She stared at him.
“There won’t be.”
“Abby, I need to be sure that you’re sure. Right now, you’re dealing with a lot of stuff that you need to work through.”
She stared at the floor for a few moments, afraid to speak.
“So there will be a when, not an if?” she finally said, fighting back the tears.
He chuckled and kissed her forehead. He brushed his thumb across her face, carrying the tears away.
“Definitely a when.”
Abby leaned into Luka’s chest and breathed in that wonderful scent again. He clasped his strong arms around her, making her feel safe.
“I love you, Abby,” he said quietly.
To be continued….
