That night, like many others the following weeks, Luka went to Abby’s house and spent the evening with her and the kids then left after they went to bed.
About two months later
Abby was finally home after an exhausting 12 hour shift at County. Richard had picked Julie up from school and had her for the weekend so Abby was left with an empty house and absolutely nothing to do for the weekend she had off. As she was getting out of a very relaxing shower the phone rang.
- Hello?
- Abby? – A really tired Luka asked, sounding awful.
- Luka? Is that you? Is everything okay?
- Abby, I’m sorry to call you at this time; I didn’t know what else to do.
- What’s wrong, Luka? You’re worrying me.
- It’s Jasna…
- I’m getting changed, I’ll be right there.

15 minutes later at Luka’s house
Luka answered the door looking even worse than he sounded over the phone which caused Abby to be even more worried.
- What happened?
- The school bus dropped her off about half an hour ago, she came in crying and hasn’t stopped since, she won’t talk to me and now she locked herself into her room. – Luka said all in one breathe, close to tears himself.
- Okay, I’ll go up and try to talk to her. Stay down here, maybe it’s a girl thing.
Luka nodded in response, unable to say anything.
She knocked softly on the girl’s door, asking permission for coming in. A few instants later there was a slight turn on the knob and the door opened a little. Gingerly stepping into the room she saw Jasna curled up on the couch facing the wall, her small body shaking with sobs.
She sat on the bed and played with the little girl’s dark hair for a few moments before speaking:
- What’s wrong, sweetie?
Jasna turned around, burying her face, red from all the tears, in Abby’s lap.
- They made fun on me. – She answered in a muffled voice.
- Who made fun of you? And why?
- Melissa and Shelly. They said I’m weird ‘cause I don’t have a mom. – Her words were barely understandable through the sobs and she seemed to cry harder with each of them.
- Aw, honey. You shouldn’t listen to them, they’re just jealous of you ‘cause you have the best dad.
- I know I do, but they’re right. I don’t have a mother.
- Sweetheart, I know this must be really hard on you but you really shouldn’t listen to them. Even if your mom is no longer here with you, she’s always going to be alive in your heart and she’s up in Heaven watching and protecting you, your brother and your dad. It’s completely normal for you to miss her and it’s okay to cry, you just have to know that you’re not alone; I’m here for you whenever you need me, ok? Don’t ever forget that, I hate seeing you cry and I hate that you had to lose your mom at such a young age but there’s nothing no one can do about that. You just have to know that your dad, your brother, Julie and I are never gone leave you alone. Not now, not ever. All right?
Jasna nodded and pulled herself into sitting position, climbing onto Abby’s lap and resting her head on her shoulder.
- Can I just ask you something, Jasna? Why didn’t you talk to your dad, why did you shut him out?
It took a minute, but she finally answered:
- I just didn’t want Tata to be sad. He’s already so sad that mommy’s not with us anymore and I didn’t want to upset him by making him think that he’s not good enough, that I’m not happy about having him as my Tata. I love him very much, it’s just that sometimes I really miss mommy.
- I understand. But promise me something: from now on, if you ever miss mommy too much or have any kind of problem you don’t want to talk about with your dad; talk to me. You shouldn’t keep everything inside; you can talk to me, no matter what. Okay?
- Okay, Aunt Abby. Thank you.
- It’s not a favor, sweetie. I really care about you and don’t want to see you sad. – Abby said kissing her cheek and hugging her close. – Now, come on, let’s go downstairs and talk to your dad.
- I’m really tired; can I just go to sleep?
- Of course you can. Tell you what, I’ll do talk to Luka then I’ll come back to sleep with you. How does that sound?
- Yaaay.
