Chapter 5: Countdown Part 2
DubrovnikFive more days. Five more days until he got on that airplane to Chicago. Five more days until he would finally declared his love for her. But, they were also, five days of worrying, five days of reconsidering, and five days too long. Luka didn’t know whether to pack or not, he was scared that he was going to change his mind, but he knew deep in his heart that he could prolong this no longer. He needed to see them. He needed to be with them. He needed to have them in his arms. He needed to let them know that he loved them. He was definitely scared of what would happen, or what could happen, but he wasn’t going to let anyone step in the way of them ever again. Not her, not himself, not the girls. They were a family and part of him knew, or rather, wished that she hadn’t met someone else, and that she still loved him the way that he loved her. But what would happen if he changed like he always did when he was around her? What would happen if suddenly he thought that it would never work out? He knew he had these thoughts in the back of his mind, but he hoped that they wouldn’t keep him from seeing her.
“Luka!” the chief called him.
“Huh? Oh- yes?” he asked, taken from his thoughts.
“We have a trauma coming in.” he said.
“Okay I’m coming.” Luka said, rushing to get gowned up.
Meanwhile, at Josip’s HouseThe phone rang, and Josip sprang up to get it, he did not want to wake Gabrielle. Who would be calling him right now?
“Halo?” he said.
“Hello. Is this Mr. Kovac?” the voice on the other like asked.
“Yes, who is this?” Josip asked confused. The person on the other line had an American accent, but he knew that it wasn’t Abby, she normally called at night.
“This is Susan Lewis. I know this is probably very strange, but I was wondering if you could help me with something.” Susan said.
“I’m sorry do I know you?” Josip said into the receiver, very confused.
“No, but I am a friend of both Luka and Abby.” Susan said, hoping that he would understand what he meant by that, since both of them were having secret friendships and guidance sessions with Abby and Luka.
“Oh my, I have a feeling you heard that my son is flying out to Chicago, haven’t you?” Josip said, a grin growing on his face. He hoped that she was calling for the reason that he had been hoping for, for the past two years. They both knew that they were in love, but they were both stubborn. He knew that even though Luka said that he would go and see her, he wouldn’t, part of him always kept him grounded. Josip just hoped that this woman knew what to do and how to do it.
“Yes, I have heard, and you have been keeping in contact with Abby correct?” Susan asked him.
“Yes I have. Now, are you trying to propose something or what?” Josip tried to get right to the point.
“I am.” Susan said, gathering her ideas.
“Well what is it my dear? I am getting anxious dear, my son is in love with Abby, and I’m sure you know that Abby is in love with him as well, but boy aren’t they the most stubborn two in the world.” Josip said as he sat on the sofa.
ChicagoAbby picked up the phone, she suddenly had the urge to talk to someone. She decided that she hadn’t talked to Josip in a while, so she dialed his number. It rang a few times, and then a few more, and then she got the busy tone. I wonder what he is doing, he normally always answers my calls. Abby put the phone down and then decided to call Susan’s cell phone. It rang four times and then she got the busy tone again. Now where is she? She put the phone down again and began to get lost in everything she was going to talk about. Taylor asked about her daddy. She missed Luka. She called him too, but the machine came on and she hung up. Everything was not going her way at all these past couple of weeks. She missed him, but she knew that she was never going to get him back, she could only hope. “Taylor, do you want to watch a movie with Mommy?” she asked, needing to clear her head.
“Otay Mama, tan we wat Bawney?” Taylor asked Abby.
“Okay baby, why don’t you go get it from the shelf?” Abby asked her daughter.
“Otay Mama.” Taylor said, and walked over to the shelf to get her favorite Barney DVD. She walked back and handed it to he rmother. Abby put it in the player and they sat down together on the sofa to watch it. Slowly, Abby stopped thinking about all of that, and got lost in Barney.
Dubrovnik“Luka? Are you okay?” the chief asked him.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Luka said as he was once again taken from his thoughts. Why couldn’t he stop thinking about the trip and about Abby. He really couldn’t stop thinking about her today.
“Are you sure? You seem a bit out there today.” the chief replied.
“I’m fine!” Luka shouted and then headed to the break room. What was it with him today? Why was he so out of it? Maybe he should call his father, and talk to Gabby. He took his cell phone out of his pocket and dialed his father’s number. It rang and rang and rang, and then he got a busy tone. What was he doing? His phone line was never busy.
At Josip’s House“Okay, so once he is in Chicago we will tell the girls, right?” Susan asked.
“Yes, and I will fly out on the flight right after his and meet you somewhere.” Josip said.
“Yes, I will meet you at the airport. Do you look like Luka at all?” Susan asked.
“A little, I’m pretty tall.” Josip said.
“Okay, so we are going to tell the girls exactly what to do.” Susan said.
“Yes, but how will I tell Gabrielle? Luka can’t know that I’m here.” Josip said.
“When he is at the conference, he will probably leave her in daycare at the hospital, or with me, we’ll figure that out when the day comes closer.” Susan said.
“Okay, I hope this works.” Josip said.
“It will, trust me. The girls resemble each other, I think, Luka sent me a picture and they resemble each other. When they are running around and Abby and Luka are chasing them, they will get it.” Susan said.
“Okay then, you are brilliant, I will see you in five days.” Josip said.
“Okay, see you then,” Susan said.
ChicagoAfter Susan hung up her cell phone, she noticed that she missed Abby’s call. She thought about calling her back, but she didn’t leave a message so she should be okay. She had some very important business to take care of. It just had to work.
