Chapter 5: Countdown Part 3
Chicago“Susan, do you think I’m still in love with him or do you just think that it’s the time of the year?” Abby asked Susan as they walked from admit into the ambulance bay.
“Honestly sweetie, I think you are madly in love with him and you just don’t want to admit it.” Susan replied, thinking that it was perfect timing for her to ask. Her plan was to take action in three days. She had to get her to know that she really did love him because, she did, of course, and she needed to be with him, no matter what she came up with to prevent herself from feeling that she did still love him.
“Really? You think that I really still love him?” Abby asked.
“Abby, seriously now. You haven’t dated another man, you have yet to even kiss another man, and I’m pretty sure you have not slept with another man since Luka.” Susan said, and Abby blushed.
“Well, it’s just that...it’s just that...” Abby tried to argue it, but she couldn’t come up with anything.
“It’s just that what?” Susan asked, laughing.
“I don’t know, I guess I’m not ready to move on.” Abby said regretting it the moment it came out of her mouth.
“See, you don’t want to move on, just yet.” Susan said, and then she continued, “You are definitely still in love with him. You can’t doubt that.”
“I don’t know Susan, how could I still be in love with him, when I was the one who broke it off?” Abby said, knowing that she was not just lying to Susan, but to herself as well. She was fully aware that she was still in love with him.
“Are you sure that you broke it off? I thought it was pretty mutual.” Susan said.
“It was my fault. I don’t know, I guess I just can’t stop thinking about him that’s all.” Abby said, knowing that she couldn’t hide it from Susan any longer.
“Abby no matter what you say or think, it wasn’t your fault.” Susan said, sad for her friend, but happy that she basically confirmed her feelings for Luka. The ambulance pulled up and Susan and Abby took the patient, ending their short conversation.
DubrovnikLuka rang the doorbell to his father’s house. He answered the door and he walked inside. “What’s wrong with you? You look like hell.” Josip said to his son, something was obviously bothering him, and he had a feeling about what it was.
“Nothing, I was just thinking.” Luka said, trying to avoid his father’s gaze.
“You look a lot worse than just thinking, unless you were thinking about Abby.” Josip said, smiling, and knowing that that had been in fact what his son had been thinking about, looking at the expression on his face. He knew when he was thinking about her, he had this look in his eyes.
“No, I wasn’t’.” Luka said.
“Yes, you were, son.” Josip said, “You can tell me if you are thinking about her you know.”
“Where’s Gabby?” Luka asked, trying to change the subject.
“Don’t you even dare try to change the subject on me Luka!” Josip said, raising his voice.
“I’m not changing the subject, I just want to know where my daughter is!” Luka said.
“Okay, okay, but we talk about this later. Why don’t you just try calling her name Luka?” Josip said.
“Fine. Gabby!” Luka shouted. Gabrielle came running from the hallway and when she saw her father she was ecstatic.
“Tata!” she ran into his arms and he scooped her up in his arms.
“Hi baby. Did you have fun with Djed today?” Luka asked his daughter.
“Yes Tata, we play and we eat!” Gabrielle told her father excitedly.
“Wow, well, why don’t you go back to the playroom and play for a little while, I need to talk to Djed, okay?” he asked, knowing that he couldn’t avoid the subject with his father.
“Otay,” Gabby said and then she ran back off.
Chicago“Suse, are you off yet?” Abby asked as she gathered her things.
“Yeah, are you?” she asked.
“Yeah, I’m on my way out now, but I have to pick up Taylor from daycare. Is Cosmo there today too?” Abby asked.
“Yes, I’ll walk out with you.” Susan said as she shut her locker door and walked out with Abby.
On their way up to daycare, Susan debated whether she should ask Abby a delicate question, but decided it might be good for her plan. “Do you ever think about flying out to Croatia to see them?” she asked cautiously.
“What?” Abby asked, not sure if she heard Susan correctly.
“Have you ever thought about seeing them?” Susan asked again.
“Oh, well I have and I haven’t. I mean, it’s complicated, and well you know.” Abby said.
“I think I know what you mean. You don’t know whether or not Luka has gotten over you or not right?” Susan asked, knowing that that was in fact the reason.
“I guess that’s it, but I have a feeling that there is something else. I just don’t know what it is yet.” Abby said, fully aware of what it was.
“Well, sweetie, if you think that he still loves you, then talk to him, there is definitely a connection between you two.” Susan said.
“What do you mean? Connection?” Abby asked confused. Susan regretted saying it, she just hoped that Abby didn’t think that she was still talking with Luka. She would be so angry that she had kept all this from her. Susan had to dig herself out of this hole.
“Well, you know, you always were so much in love.” Susan said, hoping that would do the trick.
“Oh, okay.” Abby said, and they walked into daycare to pick up Taylor and Cosmo.
Dubrovnik“Tata, I still think about her, all the time in fact. She occupies my mind, my soul, and my heart. I just cannot see why I let this happen. It’s all my fault.” Luka said, sitting down on the sofa next to his father, trying to let the feelings he was keeping bottled up inside of him. He could talk to his father, he would understand. He always did.
“I think you’re still in love with her, my son.” Josip said simply, knowing that their plan would work. The signs just kept coming. His son proclaiming his love for Abby to him, his mind lost in concentration, this all happened when he thought about Abby, and he was doing it right now.
“I think I am too.” Luka said, and leaned back, relieved that he could say it for himself.
