I posted it here before the board got deleted. However, it's currently 60 pages in MS Word, and I'm waaaaaaay too lazy to split it up so that this board can handle it. Therefore, I've created a Xanga site dedicated to it, and you can read it there. Updates will be posted here, however. www.xanga.com/A_Twist_Of_Fate_ERClick on the link, and the fic should be there! ~Nat

It's not over yet! That was just what I had written so far. I've got a few more updates before it's done.
“That was Matthew, sweetheart,” Abby said to Luka. “Come on, Liv, just kick Mommy, please!” Abby never thought she’d see the day when she was asking to be kicked. It was also odd to refer to herself as “Mommy”. She’d never even called her own mother that. She’d always just been Maggie. Pushing memories of her troubled childhood out of her mind, Abby could feel her heart rate increasing as fetal monitors, a pulse ox, and other tubes and wires that she was familiar with were attached to her. “No, Olivia’s there,” Abby interrupted, pointing Inez to the correct place for the fetal monitor. “And Matthew’s on the other side.” “Page Coburn, stat,” Luka demanded, unable to accept that he was no longer in control. Realizing that he was in the way, Luka reluctantly let go of Abby’s hand and stepped back. Abby was upset, but understood that the doctors needed room to work. Hell, she’d had to forcibly remove the family members of patients enough times herself. “Abby, what the hell happened?” Coburn shouted as she burst into the trauma room. “Trip and fall flat on her stomach,” Clemente barked. “Somebody get the ultrasound machine in here, now!” “Now, Abby, has there been any fetal movement since the fall?” Coburn prompted. “Umm, Baby A, Matthew, kicked twice about five minutes ago, except Baby B, Olivia, hasn’t moved at all,” Abby responded. Flinching as her t-shirt was pulled up and ultrasound jell was squirted onto her stomach, Abby motioned to Luka to come over and see the ultrasound. Taking each other’s hands, Abby and Luka both breathed sighs of relief when they saw two heartbeats appear on the screen. “Oh, my,” Coburn muttered. “’Oh, my’? What do you mean, ‘oh, my’, Janet?” Luka was suddenly worried. What was wrong with his children? Looking down, he saw the tears beginning to well up in Abby’s eyes and he leaned down to kiss her forehead. Lingering for a moment, Luka tightened his grip on Abby’s hand as Coburn opened her mouth to respond.

I have an update, so I guess that means I should post it!
“Well, Olivia may not be an Olivia after all.” “What are you talking about?” “I’m saying that a name change might be in order because now I’m not sure that it’s a girl. Have you considered Oliver?” “What? Check again!” “I can’t tell for sure, because Baby B turned around and I can’t get a completely clear image, but I already want to do an amnio, and we can find out then.” Abby was stunned. Two boys? Abby was really looking forward to having one of each, but she knew that either way she and Luka would love their twins. “Ummm, other than the gender crisis, is there anything wrong?” Clemente interrupted, trying to stick to the task at hand. “There’s no apparent immediate danger,” Coburn snapped back, “but I’m taking her up to OB for at least an overnight stay. Sign the forms and let’s clear the room.” Grudgingly, Clemente signed off on Abby’s chart, and released her into Coburn’s care. Abby spent the entire trip up to OB dreading her double amnio. She hated needles, and wasn’t looking forward to two of them being stuck into her uterus. Whatever’s best for the babies, Abby thought, whatever’s best. “Abby, do you want an anesthetic, or just deal with it?” Coburn asked gently. “No anesthesia. That just means more needles. Can we, um, just get this over with?” Abby rushed, twirling a lock of hair around her index finger. “We’re going to need more paint.” “Huh?” Luka and Janet said simultaneously. “If Olivia turns out to be Oliver, then we’ll need more paint. The room is already pink.” Abby watched as the ultrasound technician scanned her stomach until Baby A and the amniotic sac was visible. Slowly, Dr. Coburn stuck Abby with the needle, watching the ultrasound for guidance. Abby winced and tried her best not to contract her muscles, for that would only make it worse. She and Luka watched as the syringe filled with amniotic fluid and then Coburn slid it out and capped it off. Handing it to an OB nurse to be labeled, Janet prepared another needle. Nodding at Abby, she prepared to perform the second amnio. Again watching the screen, Dr. Coburn gently led the second needle into Baby B’s amniotic sac and took a sample of the fluid for analysis. “Okay, well, you’re done. We’re already keeping you overnight for observation, and you’ll need to stay off your feet until at least Thursday. By the way, what’s your blood type?” “AB negative. The rarest of them all. Luka, what’s yours?” “O negative,” he replied. “That’s good, then,” Dr. Coburn said. “That means you won’t be needing an Rh immunoglobulin shot. Results from the amnio will be back in 2 weeks, so, once you get back from your honeymoon. If you make it til Thursday with no complications, then I’ll clear you to fly. Where are you going, by the way?” “Uh, Hawaii,” Abby answered quickly. It was going to be two weeks until she knew if her babies were all right, and two weeks until she knew whether or not she was having two boys. Thinking about it, Abby tried to mask the disappointment that was clouding her face. She had just begun to warm up to the concept of the mother-daughter relationship, too.

Short, I know, but I'll post it anyway. Oh, and forgive me for the blatant reference to "Out On A Limb". Dr. Coburn gave Abby a towel to wipe off her stomach, and then quietly left the room. Luka looked down at Abby, and it broke his heart to see her stuck in the hospital bed. “Do you want me to get you anything?” he asked quietly. Looking up at Luka’s worried face, Abby knew she had to break the tension. “Umm, an ice cream sundae would be good,” she giggled, watching the wrinkles ease of her husband’s face. “I don’t really want one, but the babies do.” “Do they really? Well, we’ll have to start teaching them healthy eating habits before it’s too late.” Luka leaned down, placing his mouth near Abby’s belly. “Hey, you in there! No junk food! Be nice to your mother! Stay healthy! Don’t fight!” “That was a lot of advice for them to comprehend, you know,” Abby laughed. “I hope we don’t end up with two boys.” “Why not? What’s so bad about two sons?” “Nothing, it’s just that…” “Just that what?” “I don’t know. I was kind of looking forward to giving Olivia a different relationship than I had with my mother. It was going to be my chance to change history, if you will.” “Abby, there’s nothing you can do about the past. Maggie is Maggie, and there’s nothing you can do to change that. By the way, she called yesterday, and I kinda, might have, maybe told her that we were getting married, and there’s a better than average chance that she hopped the next flight to Chicago and will be here at 9AM.” “WHAT! Ohh, if I wasn’t stuck in this bed, you’d be dead now, mister! You told Maggie? What the hell were you thinking? And she’s coming? HERE?!?! Get me a phone, NOW.” “Abby, please, calm down!” Luka pleaded. “She already that we’re having a baby together, and at least we know she’s coming!” “I DO NOT want Maggie in our lives. She doesn’t stay on her meds, Luka, and I don’t need a third child on my hands right now. I said, GET ME A PHONE.” Abby was irate. What had Luka been thinking? She snatched the phone out of Luka’s hand and dialed angrily. “Hello?” “Abby, is that you?” “Yes, Maggie. Don’t bother coming.” “Abby, dear, you’ve just married that handsome doctor of yours and I missed the wedding. I have to come out and see you.” “No, you don’t. We’re leaving for the honeymoon and wouldn’t be here. There’s no extra room at the house, since the babies’ rooms are in use and so is the couch. Stay in Michigan, Maggie.” Abby realized that she’d mentioned that there was more than one nursery, therefore more than one baby. With any luck, Maggie wouldn’t notice. “Who’s staying with you? And did you say ‘babies’ as in plural, as in more than one? Are you having twins, Abby?” Damn. “Yes, Maggie, Luka and I are having twins. I’ll call you when they graduate high school. Don’t bother coming. Goodbye.” Abby slammed the phone back down into the cradle and hastily wiped a tear off her face. She didn’t know who to be more mad at, Maggie for coming or Luka for telling her to. “I still have a headache. Either get me acetaminophen, since this hospital’s too cheap to buy Tylenol, or go home. I just want to be alone tonight. Go on, leave. I have a call button.” Abby turned to face the wall as more tears slid down her face. Luka wasn’t sure what to do. This was more than he could handle at the moment. It was almost 3:30 AM, and at a loss, he left, deciding the best thing to do would be to go home.

Short but sweet!
Abby reached for her call button and wiped another tear off her face. She was dehydrated, and knew that drinking a bottle of water or two wouldn’t cut it. “I’m going to need an IV,” Abby directed at the nurse who had responded to her call. “Oh, hi Carrie! But, yeah, I’ve sobbed all of the water out of my body at this point and I can tell that I’m dehydrated. Could you get someone who can authorize a saline drip?” Abby watched as the young nurse went to find someone to authorize a saline drip, and she subconsciously allowed her hands to drift down to her stomach. “You sure you’re—hey, where’s Luka?” Coburn said as she walked into Abby’s room. “We had another argument. He basically invited Maggie to come out here. And we’re supposed to be on our honeymoon while she’s here. So I sent him home.” Janet knew it was best not to pry and decided to leave the issue. “So, you need an IV? Are you sure you’re dehydrated? Let me check your pulse. Jeeze, Abby! Resting heart rate of 120, that’s crazy! What did you do?” “Do you have any idea how much crying I’ve done in the past 24 hours? There is NO water left in me at this point.” Coburn nodded at Abby, who looked away as an IV was set up in her arm. “There you go. You’ll feel much better in a few hours. Do you want me to call anyone? By the way, the wedding was beautiful. You looked amazing.” Abby blushed, and was about to tell Janet not to call anyone when the other woman’s pager went off. “Oh, breech baby in 413. I’ve got to go. Just press your call button if you need anything, although you already knew that. I’ll be back in later!”
