Was thinking about this while driving the kiddos to school. If Abby sends Luka on to Croatia with Joe alone.....it leaves a WIDE opening for the return of Fred Ward. While finishing up her residency and dealing with the alcohol story line, it would also allow her to revisit and deal with her feelings of him leaving her as a child. Seeing the implications of the need to 'walk out'....and heal. While he didn't return till it was too late, it would make her 'return' to her family even more triumphant in the end. Wouldn't it??

Or she is trying to stop, goes to Croatia with Luka, feel the pressure of beeing compared to late wife and gets back to the bottle and crashes when returning to the US.
From what we were told GV is in more than 4 episodes, he himself said 6 not long ago, Zabel said "a bunch" which means more than 4. And recently we've heard there will be a lot extreme scenes between Luka and Abby, so, a lot can still hapen, and for once I don't think this will be about Abby working things alone, rather than Luka and Abby working through it.

From what I understand, we never have information from the main cast regarding spoilers. If that's indeed the case, then I'm betting Luka/Abby had some serious conversations, perhaps after her going to Neela's. I'm quite pleased that her pouring the vodka down may be the end of the drinking arc. It's much more realistic for long term recovery that the choice is hers ... not one made because of unfortunate circumstances. I'm hoping that during one of their conversations, Luka tells her he realizes that her alcoholism is not something he can protect her from, but loves and accepts her unconditionally. Abby is the one who has to make the choice and as someone who has had recovery in her life, she is the one who knows what she needs to do. I'm also thinking perhaps she will come home to finish her residency focus on her recovery and leave Joe w/ Luka in Croatia while Luka attends to his dad's estate, and they will reunite toward the end. of the season.

umm...I get your point and based on the scenario that GV's appearances are..well..doomed it's ok to think he's gone again and she's staying here.
but why would he take only joe with him when he's already needed to take care of his father funeral? he won't even have time to take care of the baby and if luka has no clue by now, it's very unrealistic that he'll take joe. I see no purpose of him being there (joe). his grandfather is already dead and he already met his uncle so...? if that's the case, they better come up with a better reason because i strongly don't think that, if he does know about her...*problem* luka is going to let abby on her own, specially now. and again, this is the only problem in their relationship that hasn't been brought up. so it's THEIR problem, because we've already seen abby getting sober all by herself. and now she needs to know that she doesn;t have to do this alone anymore.
I do agree, though, that it's unlikely to see them in croatia. and if this in fact is GV's last, the scenario above, although again, out of character and with no purpose in the story is most like to come up.
all I get from this, if it will happen like that, is a feeling that she'll always start drinking again and sober up just as well. and really...this isn't at all about them. sure, he has to accept her and love her but it's still only about her. and again, been there, done that. in real life it happens, but in a show it's just redundant information and narrow-minded writing. I'm soryy, but it is.
Also, we don't have the whole episode spoiled and I'll bet on some sort of incident that leaves her in Chicago more than an actual decision.

Luka may have to deal with a number of things after the actual funeral; that is, sale of a home or property ... because it is TV, they can come up with a number of excuses to keep him in Croatia for some weeks to explain his absence and it really doesn' t have to be more angst.

If Abby tells him to go and take the baby, he will do it. He is totally capeable of taking care of his child. HE is not hindered by the long hours of residency and undoubtedly has a supportive family in Croatia. He has mentioned aunts, uncles and cousins etc. Grandpa was not the only one that would like to meet Joe. ...and Abby for that matter. And as for the funeral part, in real life, kids at a funeral add a dash of 'life goes on'. I thought about excluding my then four year old from his Grandmother's funeral but it was the best thing we ever did - for those of us still living. A friend tipped me off to that when I asked her to baby sit. Just a wise word to those of you that may think it's not a good thing.....

I think I've given up trying to predict where they are going with this storyline. I thought we were headed for a "big" moment, but that doesn't seem to have come.. .. . Does Luka know? Does he still not know? Do they talk about it? Does she go to Croatia or not? I can't even make a guess.
I think pouring out the vodka is a good first step. I think it must relate in some way to whatever she and Luka talk about when she gets home, and maybe she has a heart to heart with the chaplain earlier as well. But whether this is the end of the drinking or not I won't hazard a guess.

It may very well be. It's the fist step and that's all Abby really needs to return to the road of recovery. Zabel has always been pretty low key with how their storyline works. No one thought the pregnancy before commitment would actually work, but viola!

I don't want to go into a debate..but if I were Luka and my wife would say "just go with the baby, I have other problems here" I would be really mad at her. This is a hard time for him and I think he needs her to be there.
Him dealing ALONE with his father's death and her dealing ALONE with her addiction only shows they still don't completly allow eachother for the other to give confort in their darkest hour.
ok..so if that's the case, in my opinion the carbies won. Really. So fine...his appearances are limited and TPTB have to work with scratch but this is season 7 all over again (abby dealing with maggie and luka with his ghosts all alone and them being there just phisically for each other). So this pretty much ruins all season 12 with the "we're in this together".
If this is the best they they could come up with, then for me, Luka and Abby ended in "I DO" and from that moment on i'm only watching E.R. simply because of the show.
Given the spoilers, as they are and if really is the end of the arc, then the door is open for her to to this anytime and I was really hoping for some sort of a closure.
And yeah..once an addict, always an addict but really...they've came this far only to act like strangers again?

We don't know she doesn't go to Croatia with him or what they say to one another before she dumps the vodka.
If this is the Christmas ep there's usually a big time jump to after Christmas so it's possible they both go and Maura still is in the next episode.
"It's much more realistic for long term recovery that the choice is hers ... not one made because of unfortunate circumstances. "
Or to please someone else, or to "prove" something to them.

IMO, they will all go to Croatia, however, depending on Goran's availability, I speculated that the scenerio would be that Luka had to stay and Abby willingly let Joe stay with Luka and the rest of his family while he took care of his dad's estate. She does have to finish her residency and need to focus on her recovery!

Luka would find Joe to be a great comfort at such a time as I imagine the death of his father would probably trigger some other memories and having Joe with him would be comforting. I'm guessing Luka still has no real clue about Abby's drinking..he wouldn't just leave her by herself if he knew ..would he? Or if Abby did some fast talking she may actually get out of going to Croatia and stay home to sort herself out...although this could lead to more trouble for her...big trouble. Are we any closer to a christmas episode ? "Im dreaming of a white christmas......."

And than come back to finish up with a few more episodes. Maybe it's all settled in the previous episode with a talk, and that's why Abby is pouring out the drink, and going to Croatia with Luka and Joe. Like icequeen put it by now it's hard to guess. maybe there's a lot that isn't in spoilers.
