Now, I have tried something a little different here...please don't be freaked out! I hope y'all won't stop reading it because you think one of them might die! Please just give it a chance!!!
. . . . .
Abby took Luka’s hand. It felt warm against her own palm yet somehow unreal. He turned and smiled at her, and she smiled back. They were going on a real vacation, just like she had said. Everywhere around them was bright; it was blinding, yet healing. “Come on,” a voice was saying, although Abby was sure she couldn’t hear anything. The light was so bright now; she felt like she ought to walk towards it. Gripping Luka’s hand a little more tightly, she began to take a step. As she did so, she reached to put a hand on her baby bump, only to find a perfectly flat stomach.
“Wait!” she cried in horror, “We forgot the baby! Where is she?”
. . . . .
The team put the final sutures in.
“Pressure?” called Luka.
“Stable…my God, Luka, you saved her,” Holeh called. Luka grinned.
“They don’t call me the Croatian sensation for nothing! Where’d they take my baby?” he asked.
“She’s gone up to neo-natal unit,” Kerry answered. There was silence for a moment, the only thing which could rival the feeling in the room.
“Come on, Abby, open your eyes,” Luka said, trying to stir her from the coma which she should have risen from. There was no reaction.
“Abby?” he tried again. He took her right hand in both of his. “Abby? Can you hear me? Squeeze my hand…Abby please, squeeze my hand…”
. . . . .
The brightness was consuming her entire body. “No,” Abby cried, “We forgot the baby…”
Open your eyes
Abby fought against the light, struggling back to reality, using the strongest power she possessed; a mother’s love.
Open your eyes… . . . . .
The rest of the staff had left to attend to the destruction in the aftermath of the shooting. But Luka sat by Abby’s bedside for some time; perhaps it was hours, he could not be sure. He prayed and prayed for her just to open her eyes. A thousand questions raced through his mind, trying to piece together the Abby that he knew and loved; was her right eye slightly greener than her left, or was it the other way round? What was her smile like when he told her he loved her? He held her hand tightly and tried to remember back to a time when he had the power to heal.
And then, quite suddenly, Abby began to drift awake.
“Luka?” she said, her voice hoarse. He rose instantly at the sound of her voice.
“Abby!” he said, delightedly, stroking her hair with one hand.
“Luka,” she said, putting one hand on her stomach. “The baby…where is she?”
“How’d you know it’s a girl?” Luka, asked, a little baffled but happy nonetheless for these were words which he never believed he would hear, from a voice he had been longing for.
“I…I don’t know…it’s a girl? Is she ok?” Abby said, smiling. She tried to pull herself up, but her hand flew to her stomach which was still very tender. Luka propped the bed up.
“Yeah, it’s a girl! She’s…I’m sure she’s fine…” Luka trailed off guiltily. He hadn’t had time to phone through about the baby yet; he’d been too busy with Abby.
“You’re sure she’s fine? Luka, you have made sure she’s fine, haven’t you?” Abby said, withdrawing slightly.
“Umm...Yeah,” Luka lied. The baby must have been fine; surely someone would have phoned down to inform them if it was otherwise. Abby had needed him; he would only have been in the way around the baby. However, at the same time, Luka also felt guilty. He was a Father now; he had the responsibility for looking after his child.
“Luka! Get me the phone! And a wheelchair, we’re going to see the baby,” Abby said crossly and began detaching monitors from herself.
“No, you need those, you just had major surgery,” Luka said, clipping them back on. Abby began to swat him away.
“No Luka what I need is to see my baby!” The phone rang in the trauma room. Luka picked it up.
“Kovac,” he answered.
“Dr Kovac? This is Dr Jenson of the neo-natal unit. We need you up here immediately…”

This piece may be a little short...I'll try and update again today. Thanks for all the feedback!
Luka slammed the phone down and ran out of the trauma room. He bolted through the ER.
“Luka, we need you for the-” a nurse called, but Luka just put his hand up and rushed past. His feet moved quickly through the crowds of people congregating in the reception, and, deciding the lift would be too slow, he navigated his way up the staircases. Less than three minutes later, he was in the neo-natal unit.
Panting for breath slightly, he announced his arrival to the receptionist.
“I need to see Dr. Jenson immediately,” he asked, leaning on the desk. Taking one look at the white coat, the receptionist smiled coyly and asked him to wait for a moment, picking up the phone. Luka waited impatiently, looking around. He saw a doctor approaching, also wearing a similar uniform. Luka marched up to meet him, ignoring the receptionist’s protests.
“Dr Jenson?” Luka asked.
“Yes, you must be Kovac. This way please,” the doctor requested as he walked towards a room filled with more bleeping machines. Luka just prayed that the baby was alive; why hadn’t he checked before? What had made him so careless? He realised that it had been Abby. He was so focussed on saving his girl, that he had completely forgotten about his other one.
He followed the doctor over to a small glass incubator, where a tiny, limp creature lay. She was yellow in colour and her skin had the appearance of a crumpled tea towel which she had yet to grow into. Beneath her papery exterior were her clearly visible veins and right in the centre of her chest, a gentle pulsing. The sight of her, tiny and fragile, yet breathing, took Luka’s breath away and at the same time allowed him to breathe a sigh of relief. She was alive at least; he knew Abby would be going frantic downstairs.
“She’s jaundiced,” Luka said, noticing for the first time. Why hadn’t he noticed that before? Jaundice was serious in babies; he ran through all the possibilities in his head – was it her liver, her kidneys?
“Yes, she needs an urgent blood transfusion and we need consent to do it,” the doctor answered, as he finished scribbling on a clip board. “If you could sign here please?” he offered the board and Luka scribbled a hasty signature.
“The thing is,” the doctor continued, “The baby – I’m sorry, does she have a name yet?”
Luka shook his head.
“Early tests show that she has a very rare blood type,” Dr Jenson went on. Luka nodded.
“Like her mother,” Luka said, “A-positive. Can’t you use O-neg?”
“No, she’s too young, it would cause anaphylaxis,” The doctor replied.
“So…what are you saying? She needs a blood transfusion.”
The doctor shrugged his shoulders. “An appeal has been made for the specific blood. Until then it’s just a waiting game.” He smiled sympathetically by way of apology and left.
