As promised, an extra slice of lubiness since the last post was short...three more parts to go.
Abby let a tear roll down her cheek, and onto her lips. It tasted of fear, for her baby; of happiness, at being a mother; and of emptiness at not being able to unite the two truths. Where was Luka and what was taking him so long? All she had heard was something mumbled about the baby as he ran out of the room. Whatever it was, it couldn’t have been good.
Abby strained to sit up a little further, to try and reach the telephone, but her stomach muscles still felt numb from the anaesthetic she had been given. She tried calling for a nurse, but it was all in vain. It was someone else, someone unexpected who finally came to Abby’s rescue.
“Neela!” she said in surprise.
“Hi…” Neela replied, looking a little gobsmacked to say the least. Abby guessed she must have just heard what had happened.
“What happened to you?” Neela asked, “The baby?”
“I don’t know,” said Abby shaking her head, “I don’t know, all I know is that I felt dizzy and then I woke up here and the baby had gone. Luka’s up there now with her.”
“It’s a girl? Congratulations!” Neela said, giving Abby a brief hug. Neela had tears in her eyes. Abby was desperate to get on the phone to Luka, but she still sensed that her friend needed her. Her daughter had the best father in the world, and that would have to be enough for the time being.
“Neela? Are you ok, honey? Is it…Micheal?” she asked, sensitively. Neela nodded.
“It just…it just that it kind of puts it all in perspective, you know?” Neela looked up, “Micheal died, and then your baby was born.”
Abby didn’t know how to reply to this. She opened her mouth, but she could not think of what to say.
“One comes out, one goes in,” Neela continued. She looked at Abby with a sad little smile and held her hand. “Do you want me to call up for you?”
“Do you mind?” asked Abby, relieved that her friend had had the sensitivity to understand her situation. “I still haven’t seen her…Luka just stormed out a few minutes ago…I’m worried.”
“Abby Lockhart, the maternal type, that’s something I never thought I’d see.” Neela said, smiling as she picked up the phone.
“I know…I’m a mother now. Geez, that’s…weird. Do you think this means I have to start doing my own baking?” Abby asked, trying to crack a joke, but she didn’t really feel like laughing. Neela smiled in reply, but it was obvious her heart was not in it either. Abby waited patiently whilst Neela continued her phone conversation. She eventually replaced the receiver.
“Abby…I think you should go up there,” Neela said. Her colour had changed; she was a little paler than before. Abby swung her legs round from the bed and gestured towards the wheelchair, which Neela swiftly swung around. “Why?” Abby said, gripping the papery hospital gown around her tightly. “Neela, what did Luka say?” Her heart was paralysed with fear; her stitches were painful but there was no time to think about that now.
“He didn’t say,” Neela replied. Luka hadn’t sounded too good on the phone; the baby must have been at least 5 weeks premature, she thought. The odds weren’t good, but Abby didn’t need the extra worry.
Neela wheeled Abby rapidly into a lift. Abby covered her face the whole time to avoid questions that she knew would be asked by the staff. The tension in the lift was almost too much to bear; if Abby’s heart wasn’t broken enough already, surely this waiting would shatter it. Since when had the lift ever taken this long before? After what seemed like an eternity, they reached the right floor and found Luka. Neela left the room, sensing that the couple needed some time alone together.
“Luka?” Abby asked. She tried to control her voice, but she felt like she was no longer in control of her own body, let alone the words that came out of her mouth. “She’s not…”
“No,” Luka said, kneeling down before her and smoothing her hair back from her face, “She’s alive. She needs a blood transfusion though…she’s ill.”
“Oh…God…” Abby said. Dr Jenson came over again.
“You must be Mrs Kovac, I take it you’ve heard the situation?” Abby nodded, not bothering to correct his mistake because she was transfixed by the tiny creature laying before her.
“Can I touch her?” she asked. The doctor nodded. Abby undid the hatch and rested a finger lightly on the baby’s tiny hand. Her little arm flailed and she grabbed Abby’s finger. Abby smiled on the inside; on the outside she was still numb. And that was it; one touch was all she needed to feel connected by love to her child. Her heart which had lain shattered felt instantly healed - a little bit at least. The couple just sat for a few hours, just holding each other and trying to find comfort in each other's arms.
“Take my blood,” she said, in desperation, “Take it. You can have it all.”
“Come on,” Luka said, putting a protective hand on her shoulder, “You know that’s not how it works. You’ve been on too much medication in the past few hours.”
“But I haven’t,” a voice called behind them. Both parents turned around. Abby gasped and Luka grinned. Maybe there was a chance for his little girl, after all.

This is the first of the last two parts - they are both quite short but I feel that I ought to post them seperately! Last part will be coming later today. Thanks guys!
“Maggie!” Luka said. Abby remained silent.
“Honey, someone from the hospital phoned and said you’d had the baby and they said she was ill and, well, I just wanted to know if I could help you,” she said, coming over to Abby and putting her hand on her arm. Abby withdrew her arm. She couldn’t cope with her mother now. Not now, not ever.
“Thanks, Mom, but really we’ll be fine,” she said and turned back to the baby. Luka took Maggie gently by the shoulders and encouraged her away from Abby.
“The baby is ill, Maggie. Maybe Abby could call you later?” Luka said, looking suggestively towards the door.
“I know, I know! She needs blood! And I’ll give her mine!” Maggie said excitedly. Luka sighed.
“It doesn’t work like that Maggie. You’re medication could make her very ill.”
“But I’m not on any medication!” Maggie replied, shrugging Luka off her and moving closer to the incubator.
“What?!” Luka asked.
“What?” Abby snapped round. This had got her attention.
“I’m not on any medication. They already took my blood, as soon as I heard, I came straight over, Abby, I’m so plea- ” Maggie rambled on, deliriously.
“Wait a minute,” Abby said, waving her hand and cutting Maggie off. “As soon as you heard? Who called you?”
Maggie opened her mouth to answer, but before she could, Dr Jenson came in.
“We’ve received the bloods…” he began, but at the sight of Maggie, he stopped. “I take it you’ve already heard. You might like to wait outside now…this is a very delicate procedure.” Luka nodded and wheeled Abby out against her protests.
Outside, Neela saw the couple followed by Maggie from her viewpoint by the door. As soon as she had found out what was going on with the baby from Luka in the trauma room, she had looked up Abby’s notes on the hospital database and had managed to track Maggie down. She knew Abby would have been too stubborn to do it herself, and more than this, she knew without that blood, the baby would die.
She hadn’t been able to save Michael, but maybe now the baby would have a chance to live. Live, she thought as she smiled to herself and rearranged the letters in her head. She walked away from the door as the couple approached and disappeared inconspicuously into the lift.
More like veil, she thought, for the secrets we hide.
