Here's my new fanfic. I think those die-hard Lubies among you will recognise what it's based on!
My plan is to alternate the chapters between Abby's point of view and Luka's, starting with Abby.
The usual disclaimers apply - I don't own the characters, or even the basic storyline in this case!
Enjoy!
Two Sides to Every Story
Zombies and Pizza - Abby
I’ll be the first one to admit that I wasn’t in the best of moods by the time I reached Luka’s new apartment. He’d only signed the lease a couple of days earlier and although I had gone with him to view it this was the first time I’d been there alone and it took me ages to find it. The apartment building was tucked down some side street that I must have walked past about 3 times before finally spotting it.
I hadn’t even had a good day at work, it had been one of those days when you spend the whole time being spat at, or bitten or generally abused. I hadn’t actually been bitten today, but I’d had to experience pretty much everything that side of physical attack. It was made worse by the fact that Luka wasn’t there, he’d been off today. Normally if it was ‘one of those days’ he could cheer me up with a smile or a wink, just to let me know he was there and thinking of me. But today I’d had to go through it all alone.
And then there was Carter and his problems to deal with, he wanted my opinion on whether he should talk to Weaver about an Attending position. He felt he’d been passed over because of his previous problems, so now I had that on my mind as well. Carter and I were just friends, although everyone thought there was more to it than that. I’d never do that though – I was with Luka, I’d never go behind his back.
Eventually I found Luka’s apartment building and made my way up the stairs to his front door. The door had been left ajar and I could hear noises coming from inside. I knocked, but got no response so I pushed the door open and headed inside. The apartment was in almost complete darkness, but Luka was sat there in front of this huge TV, playing a video game. What is it with men and video games? Turns them all into children again. He did look around briefly when he heard my footsteps, although I’m surprised he did hear them above the noise from the game. “Hey.” He said, then turned back to the screen.
“Bought a TV?”
“Yep.”
“Anything else?”
There was no reply from him immediately, just a series of explosions from the TV as he killed a few more…whatever it was this game involved killing. “Sony Playstation.”
Yes, I can see that. I thought. I thought you were supposed to be getting furniture; it would be nice to be able to sit down while I’m here, maybe even go to bed. “Uh, I was thinking more along the lines of furniture. You know…table, chairs…a bed?”
“I got an aquarium.” He said, sounding as pleased as a child with a new toy.
Oh good. An aquarium. That will be useful, won’t it? Shall I sit on it, or eat my dinner off it? “Yes, I see.” I walked across the room towards the aquarium, enormous and glowing with light, already stocked with fish. It looked kind of pretty, but it surely wasn’t the most important thing to be thinking of buying when furnishing a new apartment. “Couldn’t get a bigger one, huh?”
“Oh, next size up was really expensive.”
I wandered back across the room, wondering when he was going to turn his attention away from his new toys and actually talk to me. I noticed an empty pizza box on the corner of the counter. “I thought we were going out to eat.” I said a little hurt that he’d been having such a good day, nice and relaxing, and hadn’t even thought about taking me out to dinner this evening. I thought we had already planned it.
“I’m still hungry.” He told me. No surprise there then. I thought. You’re always hungry. God, I really was in a bad mood.
“Do you want to play?” He held the game controls out to me.
No, I don’t want to play. I want to sit down on a nice comfy sofa and talk to you. I want you to take me out to dinner and make me forget the horrible day I’ve had. But I didn’t say that. I hardly ever say what I think or feel; I just skirt around the issue and hope people get the general idea. Mostly they don’t, but I never change my tactics. “No thanks.”
“We could hunt zombies together?” He pleads. Normally I’d humour him and play for a little while, even though I know he’d beat me easily, but tonight I just couldn’t be bothered. I felt like a zombie myself; I didn’t want to hunt them.
“Couldn’t we just reason with them?” I shook my head, knowing that this really wasn’t working this evening. I was too tired to even bother and Luka obviously was far more interested in the Playstation and the wonderful aquarium to give me any attention. “I think I’m just going to go home.”
That obviously snatched his attention away from the game, because at long last he turned round and looked at me.
“No, no. Stay.” He said. “Stay.” As soon as he’d spoken he turned away again, focusing on the new toy. That was it. I was certain now that this evening was a total wash out. I just wanted to go home to bed. Alone.
“No, the zombies and pizza isn’t really me tonight.”
Luka shrugged and I watched his hands flashing over the buttons on the game controller, thinking that he wasn’t even going to bother saying goodnight, but the game let out a series of bleeps and he put it down. He turned to me and smiled for the first time that evening. “You’re right. Come on, let’s go.”
