Sorry this has taken me so long to get to, I got a bit busy with other things then couldn't decide where to go next with this, but have managed to get back on track! Thanks so much for all your feedback, it is great to have replies on what you think of it!
Oh and incase you're wondering certain scenes and lines were used from Touch and Go, I just twisted them for the story.
CHAPTER 6
Abby spent the next week finishing her surgical rotation which was exhausting, and by the end of it she knew she defiantly did not want to go into surgery, she didn’t like the fact that it was so impersonal, cutting people up like they were a slab of meat but not actually getting to help them emotionally like you could in the ER, she had missed that personal interaction with her patients.
She spent her nights at Lukas unless their shifts clashed, and so far it had been exhilarating, rediscovering one another once again, something neither thought would ever happen. But still she wanted to keep it a secret, Luka had broached the subject with her on more than one occasion but she had deflected the conversation away from the topic not wanting to deal with everyone being involved in their private lives, she was holding back from him, not being fully open and honest.
Her first few weeks on ER rotation were harder than she expected, she especially found it hard working closely with Luka as her attending and she being his student, at times it was hard to keep their private life separate from the ER staff and on more than one occasion they had almost been caught out and Abby knew Susan was very suspicious that something was going on, especially when she caught them coming out of the supply room looking more than a bit disheveled, Abby had just coyly smiled in her direction before Susan gave her a knowing grin.
She was also finding hard working her nursing shifts at the same time, which is where she found herself this morning. Sam was late for her shift again but she didn’t mind she couldn’t leave because she was on as a med student later in the day. She was hanging around admit half listening to Kerry say that Susan had called in sick then Kerry said something that totally threw her “We don’t need anyone to fill in, Carter is on today” Abby threw her head up at this news, she hadn’t heard anything about Carter being back in Chicago let alone back at work, suddenly she didn’t feel so good and felt like crawling under a rock. And to top off her feeling of doubt Weaver was on the war path over the narcotic count being out, so she couldn’t let the nursing shift go home until that was cleared up – today was looking like crap already.
Abby spotted Luka leaning on the counter writing up a chart, she sidled up to his side sighing, he turned and grinned at her. “Hey you, I thought you were finished your shift?” Abby was about to say something in reply but heard Weaver call out "Not until she balances her narc count." Luka turned to her and leaned down invading her space suggestively, “Want me to say something to her for you? You’ve been working too hard these last few weeks with all the shifts you have been taking, she should cut you a break” Abby winced and vehemently shook her head no, “I don’t want any special favours just because I happen to be sleeping with one of the bosses” she winked at him as she took off toward the drug lock-up.
Luka was dealing with a patient in trauma two when he spotted Carter he was happy to see his friend, someone whom he owed his life to. “You’re back!” “Yeah a week ago, holed up in the house” Luka laughed at this, he had heard from Carter a few times in email and knew he had been seeing a local woman from Kinshasa named Kem, so he could guess exactly what he was holed up doing all week. They got reacquainted again as much as they could during a trauma before worked pulled them apart. Luka was happy his friend was back but he was also a bit apprehensive at what this would mean for him and Abby, Carter had always been a roadblock in their relationship and he couldn’t help but think he had something to do with the fact that Abby was insistent on keeping this a secret.
Abby had just found the missing valium ironically in Weavers lab coat and had just signed out the night shift nurses when she spotted Carter with a pretty woman in the hallway as she watched them talking with Chuny she felt old familiar feelings creep inside her, then felt a stab of jealousy when she saw their arms wrap around each other. Silently she cursed herself for feeling such things she was happy with Luka, she should be over Carter. She sighed wanting to make a run for it and hide but knew she had to get this over with as hard as it was, so she sucked in a deep breath and walked towards the pair.
"Hey," she awkwardly said to them, eyeing Carter. “Hey” he replied back as they uncomfortably hugged each other not really knowing what else to do. "How have you been?" Carter finally asked her. "Good, I'm back in med school." Abby replied to his quizzical question. "Really?" was all he could come up with as a response to that, Abby just nodded her head and pursed her lips together, it was at this point she noticed that he was holding a picture, “What’s this?” She asked gesturing to it. “Carter looked momentarily stumped before managing to reply, “Its ahh, an ultrasound” that floored her, for a moment she had nothing to say but was able to squeak out “Wow…wow…congratulations” She was happy for them of course, but she had not been expecting that, he hadn’t just moved on from her, he had bolted over her.
Luka then chose that moment to walk up to them, he confidently stood next to Abby, making her feel relatively uneasy by his presence, this was already hard for her, she didn’t want to make it worse than it was however she had no option but to remain. “You must be Kem” he said in a friendly voice as he shook her had. “Are you Luka?” she asked him, at his affirmation she kissed him on his cheek adding “If it wasn’t for you, John and I would never have met” Abby was feeling more and more uncomfortable, she kept on stealing glances at Carter who had caught her out a few times already. "Boy or girl?" Luka asked. "It's a boy," Kem said. “Handsome” Luka jokingly said, “like his Daddy” she added Abby looked away and rolled her eyes, she never thought she would be in such a horrible situation, apparently Carter felt the same because he chose that moment to leave with Kem saying he had to get back to work.
Abby and Luka stood there for a moment longer both unsure of what to say. Luka lightly rested his hand on Abby’s shoulder “Are you ok?” He was worried about her. “Yeah” she said straight away, wanting this to be over, then slyly added "Boy, did he knock her up the minute he got there?", Luka wasn’t expecting that at all, he eyed her turning to face her full on so he could look deep within her brown eyes. He sighed and looked down at his feet, “You’re not jealous are you?” She didn’t answer him; instead she looked away not trusting herself to give him an honest answer. “Abby?” He probed, “Are you having second thoughts?” She couldn’t deal with this so instead pulled away from him, “I have to go, I have a med student shift and I need some sleep, talk with you later.” And before he could say anything in response she took off toward the on-call room.
