Thank you girls! I know my English is very poor ane elementar, but I hope to improve it. Next chapter all for you. Chapter 24: “DALMACIJA”, CHICAGO “We’re gonna have a party, all night long” All Night Long, L. Richie Luka was the only who was feeling completely at ease. He was looking lazily all around, happy to hear people speaking his native tongue. His menu sat unused at his right. He already knew what he was going to order. He moved his eyes on the three people sitting with him: Their eyes were locked on the menus and they seemed shocked. “Haven’t you decided yet?” Carter tried to answer: “We… we don’t know, really. Could you give us some advices?” Luka started laughing: “What a dilemma! Carter, you’ve already eaten Croatian! By the way, I’d recommend fish. Lobsters are incredible” No one said a word. “C’mon guys! I don’t mean to poison you! Just trust me!” Kem smiled: “Alright. Luka, I’m with you. John, I think you should listen to him” “Ok, darling” “Oh my God, Kem, that’s unbelievable! You just needed one second to convince him. That’s the power of love… Abby, we’re waiting for you. It’s Croatian or nothing” “It’s so complicated making a choice”, Luka’s eyes were pleading silently, “Ok, you won” A waiter arrived. Luka stood up and greeted him warmly. “Good evening. Have you already decided?” “Yeah… we’ll have four salads, two plates of lobsters, one Zagrebian steak and a portion of grilled pork. And can you add some fries?” “What would you like to drink?” “A bottle of white wine and two bottles of water” “Is this all?” “Yes. Thanks so much, Damir” “I’ll be bring your orders as soon as possible”, the waiter left. “Do you know him?” “We do volunteering together”, three pairs of eyes were staring at him, “What’s the matter? I’m a volunteer in a centre called «Jugoslavia: a little help for lost Balkans people». We try to help people coming from former Yugoslavia… I don’t know, we help them finding a job, we teach them how to survive in the USA… and other similar things” “What an interesting name!” “You are so funny. But when your plumber will ask you 100 $ to stop a leak and you’ll realized I’ll have to pay only 20 $ for the same job thanks to my friend Milo, you’ll stop laughing” “But it’s worse than the Mafia!”, they burst out laughing. Then Luka looked at Abby. She was fixing him intently. “What’s the matter?” “The fries. How is possible you remember I adore them?” “I’ve already told you I remember everything about you, haven’t I? How am I supposed not to remember your crazy passion for fries?” “Luka, you are a man of wonder!” Their waiter served their plates. During the dinner they spoke very little. They were all concentrated on food which was really good. Finally Abby smiled lightly at Luka: “You were right, it tasted good. I’ll trust you forever from now, I swear, no matter what you’ll say to me” “What a great privilege you’re according me”, they stood silent for a while. I think I should really thank my father when I go home. “Kem, are you happy you’re staying in Chicago?” “Absolutely!”, she smiled at Carter taking hold of his hand, “I’m sure this will be a perfect start for my new life… and, thanks Luka, you convinced Carter phoning me” “You’re welcome. I’m in debt with him” “Maybe Chicago will be a start for you too” “I hope so! By the way, Carter don’t mess up things. Even if…” “Even if?”, Carter was listening carefully. “She’s too intelligent for you… and too intuitive” “Is she right for you, then?” “Oh no. I’m not looking for someone anymore”, he was speaking quietly, gazing deeply into Abby’s eyes. She blushed slightly and looked away. She was feeling nervous and pleased at the same time. “We ask for the bill?” “Right. I’m on at eight tomorrow” “Me too!” “Dr Kovac and Dr Carter working together… it’s just so wonderful!” “I know you’re sad you won’t be there with us!” “I think I’ll survive…” “Do you need a walk home?”, it was still Luka. “Yeah, thank you” “Kem, it was a pleasure” “For me too. I think we can go out again” “Of course. Good night” “Good night at you two!” You two?-- Author's Note: It's almost impossible it exists a volunteering place called "Jugoslavia", but I thought it was funny, in a sense.

Happy New Year! Chapter 25: CARTER’S HOUSE “I just close my eyes whispering baby, blind love is true” Bed of Roses, Bon Jovi “I’m so tired! What time is it?” “It’s past midnight. I’ve only seven hours sleep left! I can’t believe it!” “Sleep? I don’t think so…” “Don’t, please, don’t do it. Tomorrow morning you can stay lazily in bed tomorrow but I have to work and I have also a graveyard shift… I can’t survive” “I’m sure that sooner or later you’ll catch up your missed sleep” Kem went to the bathroom to get ready for bed. She had all her things spared in Carter’s rooms: Brushes and perfumes in the bathroom, clothes in the bedroom and books and other stuff in the living room. John didn’t seem to mind, in fact he seemed rather happy to have someone around. Kem was enthusiastic; she had a new life, a new job and… John. She didn’t like Chicago very much, but she could find there everything she needed. She thought at her relationship; she found great the fact she could stay at John's place, but she was going to look for her own place after she would settle with her job. She didn’t mean to ruin everything by rushing things. “Kem? Are you ready?” She left the bathroom and walked toward him. He hugged her tightly breathing in her scent. He closed his eyes: “Did you have fun?” “Yes. Abby is great and I like her. I’m lucky you chose me…” “I am the lucky one” “And Luka… he’s just so charming. It’s very simple losing the head for that kind of guy…” Carter frowned and looked at her: “Should I worry?” “No!”, She didn’t break her stare and went on slowly: “I think I’ve already lost my head for an amazing and handsome and sensitive guy…”, she pause a little, then: “… I love you, John. I’m truly in love with you. I know I’ve not known you for a long time, but…” John was feeling incredibly happy. That’s what it’s called life. He kissed her and felt like he was dying and living at the same time. “I love you too. Oh my God, you can’t imagine the way I’m feeling. Where have you been for so long?” “I was just here to wait for you, John” Outside, the night was immobile. It seemed the same as ever, but in a little apartment something special had just happened: Two parts of the same soul had just met again.

CHAPTER 26 CHICAGO’S STREETS “E una notte lasciasti portarti via, solo la nebbia noi due in sentinella, la città addormentata non era mai stata così tanto bella”* Farewell, F. Guccini They were walking slowly, enjoying every single second they were sharing. They were both silent but the silence wasn’t awkward. It was soft, light, simple, instead. Abby was feeling almost drunk (even if she hadn’t drank) and was enjoying a lot the atmosphere between them. Thousands electricity slivers were running trough her body and her senses were very awake. I wonder if Luka is feeling this. I wish he held my hand, not with a particular meaning, just to let me know he’s there with me in this moment. She raised her head to take a better look at him. She could hardly distinguish his profile, but she noticed his eyes, burning like smoking coals. At that precise moment, Luka stopped in his tracks. “What’s…? Everything ok?” “Smell the air…”, murmured he, with a dreamy voice. She did. At first she could only smell smog, asphalt and rubbish, but then she was hit by a sweet and intense scent. She smiled lightly: “It’s a magnolia!” “You recognized it! It smells so good! It remembers me spring, life which fights to born again. See? We can still find something pure even between cement… wait! I'll be back soon!” “Luka!” His darkened form was already away. Abby remained alone and started feeling insecure. After a few seconds, Luka was again at her side. “This is for you” “For me? But what’s this?” “A magnolia blossom. I’ve found the tree and took one” Abby started grinning, very touched by his sweet gesture. “Thank you so much” “Stay still one moment…”, Abby was very aware of Luka’s fingers playing with her hair in order to fix the flower. After settling the bloom he left his hands wandering a little among her soft hair. Abby felt her knees buckling. “… voilà! So, if I lose you, I’ll always find you”, his voice was low, sensual. “You won’t lose me” “No?” “No” “Listen Abby…” “Stop, please. I know what you’re going to say. I know, I know it well. I can assure you that it’s the same for me too, but now it’s just…” “You’re right. I was going to ruin everything”, the silence which followed was strangled. “Hey, are you ok?”, Abby’s voice was trembling. “I’m afraid”, it sounded like a death sentence. “Afraid?”, she was beginning to feel scared too. What does he mean? “Luka?” “I don’t want to oblige you to wait. I want you to feel free” Abby felt his voice was on the verge of breaking. “You are not forcing me. I want to wait. I think this will be worth” “And what if won’t it be?” “Don’t worry about it” They went on walking. The conversation was over. Luka was stunned: She can always read my mind. “There we are” “Thanks for walking me home… and for the magnolia” “Thank to you. It has been very nice. Good night” “Good night, Luka. And greet your dad for me” Luka smiled, turned around and walked away. Abby stared at his figure until she could see him. Then she went upstairs. * “And one night you let me take you away, Only the fog and the two of us like two sentinels, The sleeping city has never been so beautiful”

WARNING: This chapter contains some dirty language. CHAPTER 27: SECOND ROUND “Questa è la mia vita se ho bisogno te lo dico …sempre io che pago non è mai successo che pagassero per me”* Questa è la mia vita, Ligabue It was Monday. The day had begun well and everybody hoped it would go on like that. The hospital had started its perfect mechanism which was working at full rhythm. Desk clerks, doctors, nurses and patients were harmoniously interacting in a synchronized and precise way. Luka was in a very good mood. It was a great day and his father had come in visiting him. He was sitting peacefully at the admit desk and seemed to be at ease. Luka often looked at him and when their eyes met he could see his father was proud of him. At eleven o’clock Abby and Kerry arrived in order to substitute poor Carter, who was dragging tiredly among the wards. The graveyard shift had just been terrible and he was feeling like a survivor. “Good morning Mr. Kovac! How are you?” “Hi Abby, I’m feeling good. I’m here to see Luka” “Ah, Kerry, you don’t know him. Kerry, this is Luka’s father, Laurentis Kovac. And this is Dr Kerry Weaver, our Chief of Emergency”, Abby left to get ready. Laurentis and Kerry shook hands. “Nice to meet you. Luka often spoke about you and your efficiency” “Thanks. But I think Luka’s great job helps this place working well…” “Do you think?”, Laurentis looked at Luka who was talking to a nervous young lady. Laurentis noticed the way Luka was leaning towards her as if he wanted to protect her. Kerry made her excuses and left. Laurentis sighed: “Just look at him! He is so beautiful, isn’t he? And that coat suits him so much…” “You’re right… I’m Haleh, the head nurse. Would you like a coffee?” “Yes, thank you. You’re so kind…”. What caring people! They do everything to keep you at ease.Meanwhile in the lounge Sam was telling a very interesting story: “… I let him in and then…”, Abby entered the room. Sam ignored her: “… I offered him a coffee… and we sat on the couch and he kissed me. It wasn’t a tender kiss but a passionate one, like he wanted to eat me alive! And he started touching me everywhere, with those big hands of his… in no time we were naked and he took me there, on my couch…”, her listeners started giggling. Abby felt bad for Sam. That’s not possible… just listen to what she was saying! “And then, without stopping kissing, he carried me to my bedroom but we made it a second time against the threshold. And when we were in bed I thought I had to give him the full service, if you know what I mean… and I should say he liked it very much. You can’t imagine how sexy he’s while he’s moaning in Croatian…”. In Croatian? Abby’s head turned violently towards Sam. What the hell is she talking about?“Sam, can you excuse me? I’ve just come in, and I’d like to know who this awful god of sex is” “You should know… it’s Luka! But maybe, when he did it with you…” “This is none of your business. When did this happen?” “On Saturday night!” “On Saturday night?”, Abby started laughing, “I think it’s impossible”, sweet magnolia scent entered immediately in her mind, “but if you’re sure…” Abby left and went to Luka. He was speaking to Laurentis and when Abby stopped talking to him he went pale. He called Sam. She arrived quickly, shortly followed by Amira, Malik, Yosh and Lydia. “What did we do Saturday night?” “You know…” “No, I know I went out with Abby, Carter and his girlfriend and then I went home. Alone”, his voice was low and serious. “Ok, I invented it. And where’s the problem?” “I’d like you will leave me out of all your future speeches, thank you” “So now you’re playing Saint Luka, right?” Luka laughed bitterly: “You are so disappointed I didn’t f**k you, aren’t you?” “How did you dare?” “Me?!” It was too late. Their quarrel was already degenerating. Kerry and Laurentis tried to calm them more than once but they didn’t succeeded. The two fighters touched several subjects till the most dangerous one. “Don’t tell me I’m a bad mother. You don’t even have children!” Abby held her breath. “You’re right. I don’t have children anymore” “Why? Social service took them away from you, right?” The hospital went lifeless. The only rumor left was Laurentis’s painful breathing. The older men had to sit down. My Luka, my Luka… Luka’s voice was as cold as a grave: “No, it’s simpler… they died in the war…” Abby covered her eyes with her hands, Kerry was paralyzed and the others almost stopped breathing. Sam shook her shoulders and went on: “And how could you think you are The Father Of The Year? Where were you when your children were dying? You should have been there with them… I know there were so scared. So Luka, answered me, where were you?” Luka didn’t react. His eyes lost all their light and their life. His lips were trembling while the meaning of Sam’s cruel words hit him violently. He looked at her and her triumphant glare destroyed completely his mind. He shivered and turned around and stumbling at every step he ran away. Nobody followed him. Nobody was realizing what had just happened. Nobody understood it had been real and not a movie. They stood there, looking at each others with empty eyes… * “This is my life If I need you I’ll tell you … I’m the one who pays nobody will pay at my place”

Thanks! CHAPTER 28: LITTLE TENDERNESS “Dev’esserci, lo sento in terra o in cielo un posto dove non soffriremo e tutto sarà giusto”* Cyrano, F. Guccini Silence was the only thing people could hear. A very thick silence, like fog, and heavy, like a cold marble slab. Everyone was immobile and mute. They were all afraid. Afraid of something worse to happen. They stood rigid, waiting for something. Waiting for something that could take them away from that terrible silence. And then, an atrocious sob brought someone to life again awakening him and making him move. Laurentis. He leant heavily forward, putting his elbows on the desk and letting his head fall. His mouth was forming some incomprehensible and painful sounds. No one was able to understand what he was saying but it was sufficient to wake them up. Suddenly the whole hospital started moving again: patients were going in and out, voices were speaking loudly, machineries were beeping and telephones were ringing. Kerry resolutely took Sam into the lounge and Carter ran to Laurentis to check on him. Without saying a word Abby moved away from the admit desk and walked towards the department. She was moving quickly, avoiding people and things. She knew well where she was going to. In her mind she could see the room where Luka was hiding; she could see him running, entering the room, locking the door and falling heavily on the floor. And now she was there, in front of the right door. She tried to open it, but it was blocked. “Luka, are you there?” No answer. Abby could feel his presence and smell his fear though. She tried again: “Hey, it’s me. Luka, open the door, please…” Still no answer. Meanwhile Carter was there, too. He was helping Laurentis walking. Abby noticed Haleh and Susan too. “Has he talked?”, “Maybe he isn’t there”, “Did you try…” “Stop it! He needs calm or he’s going to get more and more agitated. Haleh, could you get his therapist, Dr Goldstein? Thank you”, she paused a while, then sighed and stared at the closed door again: “Luka? It’s ok. Your dad is here” Abby began feeling nervous. She was losing hope. “Abby, can you go on?”, Laurentis’s whisper startled her, “I think he’s listening to you…” She sat, her back against the door and closed her eyes: “I still have your magnolia. I let it dry, it’s a shame its scent got lost”, she was speaking quietly, with a sweet tone, “I’d like you to cook Croatian for me sometime. I think I can help you, maybe…Luka, can you hear me?”, Thomas arrived breathlessly. Abby went on: “Luka? Please, tell me something”. No answer. Suddenly a thought crossed her mind. This will help me, I’m sure. “Luka, do you remember when we were together and I was messed up? At night I didn’t want to speak to you so I locked myself in the bathroom crying and I always opened the water faucet not to be listened by you. Stupid idea, eh?”, her voice was trembling under the weight of this memory, “In fact, you always found out and tried to open the door to help me. But I didn’t let you in. I was so afraid of ruining you with my shitty life and making you run away from me. And do you remember what you did during those nights? You sat and said «I’m going to put my palm on the door and you can put yours on it too, if you want. I know, there’s a door between us, but you’ll feel better, I swear». And, Luka, do you know? I put my hand on the door and, sitting on that cold floor, I could really feel the warm coming from your hand. It was incredible, wasn’t it? I could feel our souls almost getting in touch. And I felt so much better. You were in the very inside of me. You’ve always been there”, she paused a little and then: “And now, guess what, there’s my palm on this door. Please, Luka, I’m waiting for you. Do it for me” Five long minutes passed and Abby didn’t move. Then the door was unlocked and opened. A very pale and torn out Luka walked slowly towards her. He had his right hand raised in front of him. Abby touched his palm with hers. “You’re right, Abby. It works…”, smiled he lightly. Laurentis approached and hugged him. Luckily that nightmare was over. * “I know for sure there must exist a place in earth or in heaven where we won’t suffer and everything will be all right”
