Chapter 13: “Don’t Go” A pile of charts was stacked on the desk in front of Abby. Her eyes were droopy and her legs and back ached with exhaustion. This double shift felt like the longest one of her entire life. As she waited for her second wind as she stood at the desk, Abby leaned her heavy head in the palm of her hands and rested it on the table. Before she knew it, she found herself being torn between sleep and wakefulness. Luckily, she felt gentle tap on her shoulder. Without a word, she opened her eyes to find a familiar hand extended, holding a fresh cup of steamy coffee. “You are a god,” Abby said as she spun around. Luka’s face twisted and his eyes opened wide. “Excuse me?” He asked. Abby let out a tiny chuckle and quickly took a sip of the coffee. “Nevermind,” she said. “It’s just a figure of speech I guess.” Luka smiled and shrugged. “Okay,” he said. Abby smiled back. “I’m sorry to disappoint you,” she said. Luka laughed. “I know,” he said. “I was really looking forward to being ‘Luka Kovac-coffee god.”
Abby rolled her eyes and picked up the stack of charts in front of her. “Next time, it’s on me,” she said as she walked towards the lounge. Luka picked up his own cup of coffee from the counter and began to follow her. “Here,” he said, reaching out for the pile of charts. “Let me help you.” Abby gladly handed him the pile of heavy, metal charts. “Thanks,” she said. Luka nodded his head. “No problem,” he said. Abby took the cup of coffee from his hand and led the way to the lounge. She turned and pushed the door open with her back and held it open long enough for Luka to get through. He plopped the pile of charts onto the round table and sighed.
“That’s a hell of a lot of paperwork,” he said as she smiled at Abby. She pulled out the chair and sat down, sliding down in the chair until the curve of her neck was resting on the top of the plastic chair. “I know,” she said. “This is the longest twelve hour shift I have ever worked.” Luka laughed as he pulled out the chair opposite Abby and sat down. “Aren’t all twelve hour shifts twelve hours long?” He asked, smiling coyly at Abby. She rolled her head to the side and laughed. “Dr. Kovac, you think you are so smart,” Abby said as she lifted up the top chart and sighed. “If you didn’t have that accent, your cuteness appeal would be somewhat diminished and I would have to hold a grudge.” Luka turned his head to the side and looked at Abby carefully. For the first time, she noticed the gentle glow of his green eyes beneath his dark eyebrows. “Cuteness appeal? Since when does having and accent and being from Croatia make a person cute?” He asked innocently. “It’s the accent…and other things,” she said quickly. As soon as Abby finished her sentence, she lowered her head with embarrassment.
When she finally got the courage to look up again, Luka was still looking at her with that long, curious glare. “What?” Abby asked with a smile. Luka shrugged. “Nothing,” he said and as he spoke, Abby saw a twinkle in his eye and the corner of his mouth curve up to form a secret smile. The moment she saw that smile, her heart skipped a beat. She didn’t know why, but there was just something about it that made her go weak at the knees.
Abby tapped her pen on the edge of the table nervously. “Well, I guess I’ll let you get back to work,” Luka said as he began to rise from his chair. At that moment, Abby wanted to call out to him. She wanted more then anything to reach out to him and say “Please stay,” but her mouth didn’t open and no words came to her lips. Instead, she simply nodded her head and smiled. “See you later,” Abby said as Luka headed towards the door. He smiled and waved as he turned to go. Abby clicked her pen and sighed as she turned back to her stack of paperwork. “Damn it, Abby,” she thought to herself.
A moment later, she heard the door close and then a muffled cough. She spun her head around only to find Luka standing by the door. He hadn't left. He looked down for a moment before he met Abby’s gaze. They smiled at each other and for a moment, there was silence. Abby felt her heart pounding as he looked at her. The quickened beating felt so loud that she wondered if Luka had heard it from all the way across the room. At that moment, it didn’t matter. From the way he was looking at her, she had no doubt that his heart was beating just as quickly and loudly too.

Chapter 14: “Final Straw”
Abby clocked out and headed towards the door. Her eyes were so tired and heavy that they burned for sleep. She wondered how she would possibly make it home, let alone do what she had to do. She felt her stomach knot as she thought about the task at hand. It was inevitable, and Abby knew that she couldn’t put it off any longer. She’d been planning it since the day Maggie stopped by with Richard’s coy reply. Every time she thought about him in bed with the blonde medical student, Abby’s heart dropped and she felt sick to her stomach. If she had it her way, he would have signed the papers and paid the bills and they would never have to see each other again. But of course, this was Richard, they were in Chicago, and they were working in the same building. None of Abby’s fantasy was the least bit possible.
In her opinion, Richard was the biggest problem of all. In the beginning, he had seemed to be everything that she wanted. He was confident and arrogant, in a cocky, yet charming way. Well, at least confidence and arrogance seemed to be charming to Abby when she was only 17. Despite his outwardly pompous demeanor, on the inside, Abby really believed that Richard was a kind and loving person. He had supported her when it seemed like no one else would or could. They were both headed in the same direction, desperate to make a name for themselves. What Abby had failed to see was that they were headed in the same direction, but for very different reasons. For Abby, being a doctor was more then just a dream, it was an essential part of her survival. It was a way for her to prove her worth and her normalcy, despite the craziness of the world that surrounded her. Richard wanted the fame, fortune and the prestige of being a doctor. If things hadn’t gone his way, he probably would have changed his major in a heartbeat. Lucky for him, he had enough brains and charm to make his way into medical school. Abby shook her head as she thought about what a sucker she had been as she worked for all those years as a nurse while he got to go to medical school. Looking back, she couldn’t believe how naïve she had been.
As Abby climbed the familiar apartment stairs, she felt the pressure begin to mount in her chest. She held the keys in her shaky hands as she stood, staring at the numbers 213 on the old, green, apartment, door. For a brief moment, Abby remembered feeling happy here. Looking back it seemed so long ago. Now, the old, green door and the numbers 213 no longer meant ‘home.’ Now, they meant pain, anguish and disappointment. They meant giving up and moving forward. They meant the end of something that was already long gone and a cascade of memories.
The moment she entered the apartment, she felt the familiar, but deep and painful stinging in her chest. Abby looked around and took in the view around her. Since she had left a month ago, not much had changed. As usual, there were dirty dishes in the sink and empty fast food boxes on the stove. She debated for a moment, but then decided not to walk back to the bedroom. She knew it was for her own good.
Abby let out a sigh as she sat down slowly on the navy blue couch. She sat up straight, her body on edge as she sat on the side of the couch. She remembered watching TV while waiting for Richard to come home so many nights. Now, she felt strange in her own apartment. She knew at that moment that this apartment would never be home again and it hit her hard. She grabbed a pile of bills from the coffee table and began to thumb through them. She tore up the junk mail and got up to pile over by the desk as she usually did, but then stopped herself. “This isn’t your problem anymore,” she thought to herself. “Let Richard deal with it.” Abby threw down the pile of bills and picked up a medical magazine journal. She crossed her legs and leaned back a bit.
A few moments later, she heard the jiggling of keys in the old door. Abby spun around and scrambled to her feet as Richard looked across the room at her. She dropped the medical journal onto the couch and crossed her arms. Richard walked in and closed the door behind him. “We need to talk,” she said as she kept her gaze fixed on his face. Richard dropped his briefcase by the door and slid off his shoes. “About what?” He asked. Abby growled as she rolled her eyes and followed him as he walked towards the kitchen. “You know what about,” she said. “Richard, why didn’t you sign the goddamn papers?”
Richard opened the fridge and pulled out a carton of milk took a swig. He wiped the milk on his upper lip on the back of his hand and then put the carton back into the refrigerator. Abby closed her eyes and bit his lip. She hated when he drank right from the carton and Richard knew that. For years she had been bugging him about it, but he never stopped. She realized now that there were so many things about him that she really couldn’t stand. Richard turned to face Abby and then shrugged carelessly. “There isn’t a reason for me to sign those papers, Abby,” he said. “Other then now that I am a doctor you think you will get more money from me.” As he spoke, Richard’s face curved into an obnoxious grin.
Abby bawled her fists together and tried not to cry. She felt her eyes begin to blur and her lungs begin to burn, but she held her ground. “No reason for you to sign the papers?” She asked. “After what I walked in on the other night, you are telling me there isn’t a reason for you’re to sign divorce papers and for us to no longer me married?” She asked sarcastically. “So, it’s okay to screw someone else in the bed where your wife sleeps, but it’s not okay for me to want a divorce? Jesus, Richard, what the hell is wrong with you? Why are you so damn selfish?” Richard grabbed a banana peel from the kitchen counter and pulled out a chair. He hardly seemed phased by the obvious anger and anguish in Abby’s voice as she spoke. “Give me a pen,” he said as she continued to peel his banana. Abby simply stood there dumbfounded. Richard looked up at Abby from the top of his glasses and glared at her. “You said you wanted me to sign the damn papers, so get me a pen,” he repeated. Abby reached down onto the table beside her and grabbed a pen, then she reached into her purse and pulled out the folded and crinkled divorce papers. Her husband of 12 years didn’t even look up as he took the papers from her hand. Instead, he reached into the table and grabbing the remote control, flipped on the golf channel with his free hand. Abby felt the anger continue to rise in her chest as she stood in front of him.
She wondered to herself why he would refuse to sign the papers only to give in so quickly and without much of a fight. Then Abby remembered who she was dealing with. He looked up at her only for a moment as he handed her the signed papers. She glanced down at the illegible scribble of his name on the bottom of all three pages. In her hand was her ticket to freedom, yet Abby felt more disturbed and empty then she ever thought possible. She folded the papers once more and gently placed them in the pocket of her purse. Then, without a word, she took one last look at Richard and the life she was leaving behind, then, as a tear rolled down her cheek, she walked out the door, determined to never look back.

This is a great part, as usual! What I found really interesting, is when you show us a part of Richard's personality. We understand why Abby fell in love with him. And it points out what a cynical and arrogant jerk he has become. Bravo!

Chapter 15: “Signs to Nowhere”
Even though it was 3am, Doc Magoo’s was crowded with staff from County. Thanksgiving week was always busy in the hospital and everyone was more then willing to take on an extra shift for a few extra dollars. Carter, Lucy, Abby and Luka made their way to a booth in the back and sat down. Lucy and Abby slid in first, and then Carter and Luka followed. Lucy quickly opened the menu and glanced down at it. “I’m starving,” she said with wide eyes. “Abby, what are you going to get?” It took Abby a few moments to respond to Lucy’s question. The menu was still closed on the table in front of her and she flipped it open carelessly before dropping her head, exhausted. Then she shook her head and scrunched her face. “I’m not hungry,” she said as she closed the menu. “This double shift is kicking my ass.” Carter sighed and closed his menu too. “Ditto,” he said with the flash of a quick smile. Luka let out a chuckle as he continued to look down at the menu. “Well, I’m starving,” he said with a smile. Abby shook her head and smiled at him. “Your always hungry,” she chimed in. Lucy looked up at the two of them and smiled. “Well, Luka, it looks like it’s you and me,” she said to him. Luka nodded his head. “They’ll be sorry when we get swamped later and they are hungry,” Luka added.
The waitress came over to the table and smiled down at them. “What can I get ya?” She asked, looking down at Luka. He nodded his head in Abby’s direction. “Abby?” He asked. “After you.” She glanced over at him and smiled and then looked up at the waitress. “Just coffee,” she said as she handed the waitress the menu. “Thanks,” she added as somewhat of an afterthought. The woman nodded and looked expressionless at Lucy. “And for you?” She asked. Lucy took one last look at the menu before she began to order. “I’ll have the French toast,” she said. “And apple juice.” Abby watched the miserable look on the waitress’ face as she scribbled down the order. Then she looked up and nodded her head at Carter. “Coffee,” he said with a brief smile, but the woman paid him no mind. Just a moment later, with a big grin on her wrinkly face, the waitress turned back to Luka. “Now, what can I get for you, sweetie?” She asked. Luka smiled pleasantly. “A lot,” he said nonchalantly. Lucy, Carter and Abby all glared at each other and tried not to laugh as they watched the woman’s face light up at Luka’s words. She stood there patiently in her pink and white striped dress with dirty, off-white New Balance sneakers as she waited for Luka to begin ordering her food. “Um, I’ll have 3 pancakes,” Luka began. “Two scrambled eggs and three sausage links.” He paused for a moment as he flipped to the back of the menu. “What kind of muffins do you have?” He asked with a smile. The waitress smiled back, exposing a mouth full of yellow teeth. “Chocolate chip, blueberry, and cranberry,” she said. Luka tapped his fingers on the table as he tried to decide. “Blueberry,” he finally said. “And what would you like to drink, doll?” She asked. Abby looked at Lucy and bit her lip to keep from laughing. “Coffee,” he said. “Just coffee.”
The moment the waitress was out of sight, Carter, Abby and Lucy broke down with laughter. Luka turned and smiled at them, but his face still remained innocent and clueless. “What?” He asked with a slight laugh with his question. “Oh, come on Luka!” Abby laughed. “She was practically undressing you with her eyes!” Luka shook his head and laughed. “Maybe she was just nice,” he said. Lucy leaned forward across the table and whispered softly. “I think she wants a little bit more then a $5 tip from you, Luka,” she said, smiling. Luka leaned back and rolled his head from side to side. “What did I say?” Luka asked as he shrugged his shoulders and turned to face Abby. She put her hand in front of her mouth to muffle her laughter and shrugged back at him.
When the waitress brought the drinks back to the table, Abby took a moment to quickly glance at the woman’s name tag pinned awkwardly over the pocket of her pink and white get-up. For some reason, even the woman’s name, Agnes, made Abby want to laugh. She was so tired that she was giddy. Carter laughed once more as the woman walked away and then raised his glass. “To Luka and his new interest,” Carter said with a smile. “Agnes,” Abby mumbled. Carter turned his head to face her. “What?” He asked. “Luka’s interest’s name is Agnes.” Once again the three of them began to laugh. Lucy laughed so hard that she started choking and coughing on her apple juice. “To Agnes!” Lucy laughed as she raised her glass and continued to cough. Luka rolled his eyes and began to laugh too. “To divorce!” Abby chimed in. Everyone suddenly turned and looked at her. “He signed the papers?” Carter asked, his eyes opening wide. “It was easier then I thought,” Abby answered. Luka burned his mouth when he suddenly swallowed a large gulp of coffee at Abby’s remark. “You were married?” He asked. “Abby nodded her head and held out her hand. “Was, is the key word,” she said as she slid her wedding band off of her finger. “My divorce became official today,” she added. Luka nodded his head and tipped his cup of coffee in her direction. He looked down and was silent for a moment before he spoke. “Well, congratulations?” He asked, unsure of what to say. Abby nodded her head. “Yeah, thanks,” she said. “It was something I’ve been putting off for far too long.”
There was an awkward silence for a moment but then Luka raised his cup once more. “To me and Carol,” Luka suddenly chimed in. Abby nearly dropped her steamy cup of coffee on her lap, but Carter spoke before she could find words. “You and Carol?” He asked. Luka nodded. “Well, we aren’t together, but I think that I might have a shot,” he said. Carter nodded his head. “That’s a pretty complicated situation, don’t you think?” Carter asked. Luka shrugged. “We aren’t teenagers anymore,” he began. “Nothing is easy anymore.” Lucy nodded her head. “Tell me about it,” she said with a sigh. “Here we are, toasting with coffee and apple juice at 3:30 in the morning!” The three of them began to laugh, but Abby remained silent. Suddenly, her giddiness was gone and she felt sad and alone. Had she really been that blind? She wouldn’t have guessed that Carol and Luka would get together in a million years. What about the moments that they’d had? Sure, they had been few and far between and in those moments, silence had been the only words they’d spoken, but she’d felt something. There was something there, between the two of them. This deep but unspoken connection. Maybe she had been a fool to think that Luka had ever felt anything at all.
Abby turned and began to scoot towards the outside of the bench. She tapped Luka on the shoulder and he turned to face her. She lowered her face. She didn’t want to look into his beautiful eyes right now. She didn’t want to fall any deeper then she’d already allowed herself to fall. “I’m going to head back,” she said to Luka. “Already?” He asked, leaning over and looking into her half filled cup of coffee. “You still have coffee left.” Abby unzipped her purse and pulled out a twenty dollar bill. “My treat,” she said as she threw the money onto the table and Luka stood up. He quickly grabbed the money, but she had already walked past her. “Let me get it,” he said as she grabbed her arm and held out the money for her to take. Abby sighed with her back to Luka. She closed her eyes and took in a deep, cool breath of air. “Save it for your date with Carol,” she said, turning around and throwing him a fake smile. “I’ll see you guys later,” she said as she looked down at Carter and Lucy. “See you later, Abby,” Lucy said and Carter waved quickly. Abby turned away without looking back at Luka. Once again, she put up a wall, one strong and high enough so that not even Luka’s bright eyes would be able to break through.
