Hi everyone,
I decided to start working on my second fanfic. This one isn't a continuation of my last story (sorry to disappoint). I decided to start from the beginning...
Hope you like it!
Chapter 1: “Double Vision”
Abby reached out and took hold of the young woman’s hand. “Just keep breathing, Jean,” she said, tightening her grip the woman’s hand. “Just squeeze my hand and take big, deep breaths.” Jean gritted her teeth and took a deep breath. “Are you sure?” Jean asked as she pursed her lips and blew out a breath of hot air. Abby looked up at her and smiled. “You need someone,” Abby said. “Having twins is no easy task.” Jean laughed and then let out a quick moan. “I just don’t want to break your hand!” Abby smiled and shook her head. “I’m used to this by now,” she said. “It hardly even fazes me anymore.”
Jean threw her head back into the head of the bed and closed her eyes. “I didn’t plan it to be this way you know,” she said, opening her eyes and glancing up at Abby. “I thought I was in love. Dan had problems, but I thought this would bring us together. Boy, was I wrong.” Abby smiled down at Jean and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. Jean returned the squeeze, but with double the force. Then she grimaced and let out a whimper. “I think I’m having another contraction,” she said. Abby looked up at the monitor and nodded. “Your right, Jean,” she said. “I think this is it. Take deep breaths for me Jean, deep breaths.” Jean nodded her head and pursing her lips, began sucking in puffs of air. “Is it time to push?” Abby asked, glancing down towards the bottom of the hospital bed. Dr. Coburn looked up at her and nodded. Abby smiled and turned back to face Jean. “Okay, Jean, it’s time to push,” she said, reaching out and brushing a loose strand of hair from Jean’s forehead. “Are you ready to become a mom?” Abby asked, as she pulled over a stool and sat down at Jean’s bedside. In between a cry and a grimace, Jean glanced up and smiled at Abby. “I’m ready,” Jean said.
Abby readjusted the tiny blue hat on the baby’s head as she placed him into Jean’s open arms. “He’s beautiful,” she said. Jean nodded her head and smiled down at her tiny son. “He is,” she added. Abby turned around and gently scooped up Jean’s other baby boy. He opened his eyes at her touch and stirred as she walked towards the side of Jean’s bed. “I think I’m seeing double,” Abby laughed as she rocked the baby back and forth. “Want to hold him?” Jean nodded and slowly shifted her other son over into the crease of her left arm. Abby laid the baby in Jean’s arms and then stepped back and crossed her arms. Almost instantly she felt sad at her now empty arms. “How am I going to tell them apart?” Jean asked. “My God, I feel like I’m seeing two of Dan.” Abby smiled and took a step forward. “You could keep their hospital bracelets on for a few months,” Abby said, laughing.
As Jean looked down at her twin boys, her face suddenly crew serious. She sighed deeply and then looked up at Abby. “You know, right after Dan left, I thought about not having them. I just didn’t think that I could do it on my own. I was so scared. But looking at them now, I’m so glad I made the decision that I did.” Abby looked from Jean to the babies and down at the floor and smiled. “They’re perfect,” she said. Abby reached out and gently laid her hand the top of Jean’s shoulder. “I have to finish up some paperwork. Congratulations again Jean.” Abby took one last look at the new family in front of her before she walked out the door and then she turned to go. When she reached the door, Jean called out to her. “Abby,” she called. Abby spun around quickly to face her. “I don’t know how to thank you,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without you.” Abby shook her head. “You are a lot stronger then you give yourself credit for,” she said. “And you’re welcome.”
Abby walked straight from Jean’s room to the lounge. She fumbled with the combination lock on her locker until she fell back onto the bench behind her exhausted and frustrated. Abby slumped her body against the cold metal lockers and lowered her hair. “Damn it,” she mumbled as she stood up to face her locker once again. “God damn it.” She flung open her locker and quickly grabbed her backpack and her jacket. Then she slammed her locker closed and walked out of the lounge.
Abby rolled her eyes as her lanyard got tangled in her hair. Once she finally got it off, she slid her ID through the machine and clocked out. She slid her arms through the sleeves of her leather jacket and flung her backpack over her shoulder. As the doors slid open, Abby heard a familiar voice from behind her. “Abby,” he called. “Wait up!” She stopped dead in her tracks and closed her eyes before turning around. By the time she turned to face him, her husband, Richard was standing in front of her. “Long day?” He asked, reaching out and touching her arm. Abby turned her body and pulled away slightly. “Long day,” she repeated. “When are you off?” Abby asked, finally meeting Richard’s gaze. “I’m done in an hour,” he said, glancing down at his watch. “But a few of us are going to head down to Doc Magoo’s afterwards for a few drinks.” Abby nodded her head and crossed her arms. “Doc Magoo’s? Again?” She asked, narrowing her eyes. “It’s been a long week, Abby,” Richard said. “Medical school is a drag. You’ll see once you get in.” Abby groaned slightly and rolled her eyes. “You mean when you let me get in,” she said, glaring up at him. “Which reminds me, we have to go over some financial aid stuff for me and deal with some of your loans, you know.” Richard nodded and turned to look at the other young medical student standing a few feet behind him. “This isn’t the place, Abby,” he said. “We’ll talk about it later, okay?” Abby sighed and adjusted the heavy backpack on her shoulder. “Yeah, I’ve been hearing that for what? 6 months now? A year maybe?” She said. Richard rolled his eyes. “Jesus, Abby. Get off my back. I have a lot on my mind.” Abby glared past Richard and looked at the tall, bleach-blonde medical student in the distance. “Yeah, I see that,” she said, nodding in her direction. Richard punched his bawled up fist into the chart in his hand. “She’s just a friend,” he said. “I give her a ride to work.” Abby laughed sarcastically. “Yeah, I bet you give her a ride all right,” she said, turning to walk away. She looked back at Richard, but he didn’t follow. Instead, her turned and walked back towards the medical student.
Abby threw the strap of her bag around her neck and over her shoulder as the el came to a screeching stop. As she stood, she felt a deep ache in her back and legs. She was tired but she knew that sleep wouldn’t come. It never came on nights like these. A hysterical laugh came from Abby’s lips as rain began pouring on her head as she walked towards the apartment building. “How typical,” she mumbled to herself. “The perfect, shitty ending to another shitty day.”
