i was thinking of all the awful things that the guys in e.r. go through, especially Abby... and why it is that these traumas don't send them more crazy. so basically this is a trauma of epic proportions.
maybe i'm exagertaing, i have a very active imagination. when i thought of the fic i gave myself nightmares...but i'm a soppy girl.

Lost and Found.
(Abby goes through one horror too many.)
Chapter 1.
Discovered.
“Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Jo-oe,
Happy birthday to you!”
Joe grinned happily, bouncing about on his mothers lap and clapping his hands in delight as he saw Luka enter the room holding his birthday cake. Two candles stood proudly on the chocolate cake shaped like a train and covered in brightly colored sprinkles.
The song finished and Luka put the cake on the table in front of Joe, exchanging a happy grin with Abby and kneeling down by his family. Recognizing his cue Joe excitedly blew out the candles with a huge puff of air containing just a little too much spit for the cake to seem edible.
He sat back on Abby’s lap, proud at his candle blowing efforts and delighted at the applaud he was receiving. Abby kissed her son on the top of the head and flashed a smile at her mother who was busily taking as many photos as possible to “adequately document the day.”
Abby leaned down to speak to Joe “do you want to help Mommy cut the cake?”
He grinned up at her and shook his head “no”
“no? oh ok…don’t you wanna eat your cake?”
Joe thought about the question then laughed and nodded vigorously. “yeah”
“ok, well we have to cut it so we can all have some yummy cake.”
She picked up the knife and let Joe hold the handle with her, slicing up the cake into little pieces. “there we go, now which piece do you want?”
Joe stared at the slices of cake with eager eyes, he pointed at the one with the most sprinkles “that one.”
“that one please?”
He looked up at her, not noticing the lessons in manners she was attempting to give him, far too interested in the sugary goodness before him. He nodded. “yeah.”
Abby smiled and put the slice onto a plate, handing it carefully to Joe who started to struggle in her grip. She placed him on the floor and watched as he carried his plate of cake over to his pile of new toys.
Luka sat down next to her, putting an arm round her shoulder. “He seems to be enjoying himself.”
“well, he certainly seems to like the cake.”
They laughed at the sight of their son with a chocolate covered face, a fistful of cake in one hand and a new toy train in the other, happily lost in his world of childhood fantasy.

Abby and Luka walked towards county arm in arm. They’d been happily married for nearly a year and with their son growing up in front of their eyes day by day life seemed ever more wonderful. The sun shone brightly, warming the frosty September morning.
“what did you think of Melanie?”
“Which one was Melanie?”
“the one who’s kid tried to take Joe’s train away from him.”
“oh her, with the blonde hair? She seemed nice enough…didn’t think much of her kid.”
“neither did Joe. Did you see that punch he gave him? Serves me right for naming him after a boxer I guess, he’s starting the GBH already.”
Luka laughed. “he’s a tough one alright. I think your mother was a bit shocked at the kick he gave her”
“he kicked her?”
“yeah, when she tried to clean his face after he ate all that cake.”
“God…are we raising a demon?”
Luka laughed again, shaking his head with a smile. “he’s ok, he was just high on sugar.”
“don’t I know it? I thought he’d never fall asleep”
They turned into the ambulance bay and suddenly Abby stopped. Luka turned to her.
“what?”
“shh. Do you hear that?”
“hear what?”
“sounds like a baby crying”
They stood still for a minute but there was no sound. Luka smiled. “your ears are probably just ringing from that room full of two year olds we had yesterday.”

Lily Timmons, a three year old with blonde curly hair sat on the rug in the middle of the living room, ignoring the younger toddlers in the room fighting crying and demanding food. She held a toy robot with the head of a lizard in one hand and a small pink-haired Barbie-type creation in the other. Joe sat next to her, watching in fascination as she moved the two figures across the rug, telling a strange story of love and terminal sickness with the plastic toys. He drove his toy train around her game, wanting to join in but not having the speaking skills or emotional imagination to quite manage it. She used the train as a car for her robot character, telling Joe that he was leaving his pink-haired true love forever and ever.
Maggie walked over to Abby, a handful of paper plates in her hand, helping with the chore of cleaning up as Joe’s party came to an end. She followed her daughters gaze to where Joe sat with his young friend and smiled.
“looks like Joe’s got himself a little girlfriend.”
Abby looked at her mother with an amused frown “Mom he’s two years old.”
“I think it’s sweet.”
“what you’re thinking is just plain creepy.”
Maggie laughed. “well I’m glad he’s having a good time anyway.”
“yeah…and thanks for coming.”
“you kidding? I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” She kissed Abby on the cheek and looked back at Joe “before I know it he’ll be 15 and chasing girls around for real.”
Abby rolled her eyes at her mother’s strange obsession with her two year old grandson’s dating prospects.

Luka walked back to where Abby was standing, straining her ears to hear what she thought was a baby crying. She shook her head and carried on walking, before stopping again. By the look on his face Luka had heard it too this time. They both looked round to work out where the noise was coming from. Something about the muffled sound of the crying made it seem odd, hard to ignore. Abby walked towards the bench, spotting a sports bag, walking towards it the noise got louder. She looked behind her
“Luka!”
He followed her towards the sports bag, they exchanged a glance before Abby rushed towards it, unzipping it hastily before looking up at Luka in shock.
“Luka it’s a baby”
