Chapter 6: Questions Answered
Dubrovnik Luka could not believe that he is leaving for Chicago in two days and he can’t get over the fact that he will be seeing her soon. The both of them. He really just hopes that by the time he gets there, everything will work out, and they will be happy again. He does know that with Abby, nothing is easy. “Gabby! Did you pick your toys out yet? Tata needs to pack them.” he said to Gabrielle, who was walking past his room.
“Yes Tata, here tey are.” Gabby said as she backtracked into her father’s room and gave him the toys. Luka thought for a while and then decided that it might be a good idea for Gabby to see her mother. He always thought that when the moment was right, he would show her, or have to tell her about Abby, but it was probably better for him to tell her first, rather than her asking.
“Gabby, I need to show you something, okay?” Luka asked his daughter.
“Um, otay Tata, but what istit?” Gabby questioned him.
“Do you know what a mommy is, baby?” Luka asked her.
“No Tata.” Gabby said.
“Well a Mommy is like a Tata. Tatas take care of babies, and that’s what mommies do. We’re the same. We have the same job in life.” Luka said.
“Oh, so Tata is mommy?” Gabby asked and Luka laughed.
“No baby, Tata is like a mommy.” Luka said, and now he thought that this was a bad idea. It was coming to the hard part.
“Oh, den what you mean Tata?” Gabby asked.
“I mean that every baby has a Mommy and a Tata.” Luka said…here it came, he thought. She was going to ask it, he knew she was. This little girl was a curious one.
“Den Tata…If ewy baby has a Mama and a Tata, where is my Mama?” Gabby asked the question Luka dreaded. Her face saddened as she realized that she didn’t have one. “I no have a Mama.” Luka saw her face and decided to pick her up and place her on his lap.
“No baby, you have a Mama. We’re going to try to make this work okay? I know you will love your Mama. I love your Mama, but we had a problem. Tata wants to fix that problem and that’s why we are going on a trip, okay?” Luka explained.
“Okay Tata.” Gabby said. Luka reached over to his nightstand and opened the top drawer. He pulled out a picture that was torn in half.
“This is your Mama Gabby.” Luka said, his eyes filling with tears.
“Oh, she pwetty.” Gabby said, and put her head against her Tata’s chest. She did not know why the picture was torn or why he showed it to her, but she loved it.
ChicagoLittle Taylor was wandering around the apartment while her mother was sleeping. She didn’t want to wake her, so she continued to look around, trying to find something interesting. She quietly crept into her mother’s room and opened some of the drawers. She pulled out one of Abby’s bras and tried to put it on. She giggled to herself. “Hmmm, what does Mama got in hewe?” She whispered aloud. She went to the nightstand by the bed and opened the top drawer. Something immediately caught her eyes, and she picked it up. The picture was torn and it seemed pretty old. “Who is tis?” she said and walked to the other side of the bed. She had to know. She climbed up onto the bed and touched her mother’s cheek. “Mama?” she asked.
“Hmmm, what is it baby?” Abby answered, still half asleep.
“I have question.” Taylor said, and laid her head on Abby’s side.
“Okay what is it?” Abby asked, her eyes still closed.
“Who is tis?” she asked, and then sat up and handed the picture to her mother’s hand. Abby opened her eyes and gasped. At first she didn’t see the picture, but saw that her little girl had her bra on. She giggled and then smiled.
“Where did you get that?” She asked her.
“Over there.” Taylor said, pointing to the dresser.
“Oh okay.” Abby laughed a little more and then remembered that Taylor had asked her something. “What was it that you asked me baby?”
“Oh, who is tis?” Taylor asked again.
Abby gazed at the picture for a moment and then sat up in the bed. She couldn’t stand looking at the picture, it brought back so many memories, it was crazy.
“Now where did you get that?” Abby asked.
“I find it in dere.” Taylor said.
“Oh.” Abby said.
“Awe you mad Mama?” Taylor asked.
“No baby. It just reminds me of someone.” Abby said.
“Otay, well tan you tell me who it is?” Taylor asked.
“Sure.” Abby began and then thought through her words. She was scared that she was going to cry again. She knew she was going to cry again. “Do you remember when we had our little talk about daddies?” Abby asked slowly.
“Yes.” Taylor answered.
Abby thought that she would just make it simple. “This is your Daddy.” Abby said and then tears were brought to her eyes as she thought through the day that this picture was torn.
“I dought you say he left.” Taylor said, she was not going to make it simple.
“He did, baby, but I still have a picture of him.” Abby said, and then she thought back to the day again.
“Okay Mama, that’s all.” Taylor said and handed the picture back to her mother and walked out of the room, the bra still on her.
“Your leaving tonight?” Abby asked him.
“Yes, it hurts me too much to stay here. I’ll come back for my things in a couple of days okay?” Luka said to her.
“You know you don’t have to leave so soon.” Abby said.
“I think I do.” Luka said, and then got his wallet out of his pocket. He opened the flap and took out a picture of the both of them. He ripped it in half right in front of her, and then handed her a part of it. She accepted it and then looked at it bewildered. It was a picture they took on the beach the previous year, but it was only the half with him in it. They were so happy then.
“What’s this for?” she asked.
“So you never forget me.” he said and then stormed out of the apartment. Then he said to himself, “And this is so I never forget you.” but deep down he knew that he would never forget the one that captivated his heart.
Back in the apartment she said to herself, crying, “How could I ever forget you?” and then sat down on the sofa and cried herself to sleep.<3 nicole
