Chapter Fifty-Four: “Sing to Me”
Abby put her hand on Luka’s thigh and he grabbed it with both of his own hands and smiled at her. The tiny banquet hall where the wedding reception was held was anything but exquisite. The wooden floors were no longer shiny, but well warn in and the walls were the most hideous shade of peach Abby had ever seen. The lighting was terrible, and the food was just as bad. Luka glanced down at Abby’s plate, full of food and laughed. “Not hungry?” He asked, nodding towards the plate. Abby shook her head and shuttered. “I think I’ll wait for the airplane food,” she said. “Thanks anyway.” They both laughed. “I guess that’s what we get for waiting until the week before our wedding to book the place,” Luka said, practically yelling over the music. “What?” Abby said, turning her ear towards him. “This place is awful!” Luka yelled back, and Abby laughed. “Well, I think it’s good for us,” she said, smiling. Luka raised his eyebrows. “How?” He asked. Abby picked up a piece of mushy broccoli and waved it in Luka’s direction. “Well, for one, the food is terrible, which is a lot like my cooking,” she said, laughing as she dropped the broccoli back onto her plate. “Secondly, look at the floor, and the tables…everything is all warn-in and kind of old. It might be small, but it’s kind of homey in it’s own little unique way.” Luka shook his head and laughed. “What has gotten into you?” He asked. “Since when are you the one to see good in an otherwise awful situation?” Abby picked up a stale dinner roll and threatened to throw it at Luka. “Don’t make me,” she said, holding up the roll in her hand. Luka shielded his face. “Okay, okay,” he said. “Your right, it is kind of homey.” Abby nodded. “That’s right,” she said. “I mean look, we’ve got like a good 7 loyal guests who are putting up with this terrible food and crappy service just for us,” Abby said. “They sure are,” Luka said, leaning in to kiss Abby’s cheek.
Carter stood on the make-shift stage to make his toast. He held a glass of champagne in his left hand and a microphone in his right. He tapped the top of the microphone, and feedback shot through the air. Everyone gritted their teeth at the high pitched sound. “Well, I see that it’s working,” Carter said, laughing a bit. “Before I start, I want to thank Abby and Luka for inviting me to be here, and Luka for asking me to be his best man,” he said. “Through the years, Luka and I have had our differences, but it took us uniting in Africa, for a greater cause for us to become bigger men. Luka, you’ve become a great friend to me, and it really means a lot to me to be your best man.” Carter paused and shifted the glass in his hand, then he looked back up, this time in the direction of Abby. “And Abby, we’ve been through a lot, you know, we’ve have a lot of good times and some bad ones too. I just want you to know that I just always wanted you to be happy…and I see now that you are. I’m glad you found that happiness in a good, kind man like Luka. You two have a beautiful son…and I wish you all the happiness in the world,” Carter finished and then lifted his glass. Luka nodded at Carter as he held out his glass, and Abby smiled. “That was nice,” Luka said, turning to Abby. She nodded. “Do you think these glasses are okay to drink out of?” She said, inspecting the glass in her hand. Luka elbowed her gently and she took a sip. “I was just kidding,” she said, laughing.
Neela nervously made her way in front of the tiny crowd. She cleared her throat before she brought the microphone to her face. “I’m not good at giving speeches or talking really, so I’m not sure that this is going to be very good,” Neela said, as everyone around laughed. “But, Abby already knows that and she still chose me to be her maid of honor anyway, so I guess that says something.” Neela looked over at Abby and she smiled. “I’ve been through a lot this past year, these past few years really and I was always comforted by the fact that I knew Abby was always by my side. She’s been a confidant, a role-model and most importantly a friend…one of the best friends I’ve ever had. Abby, I am so happy to finally see that you found yourself…that you found happiness. Luka is a good man and I wish you two…well three…many, many happy years together.” Neela put down the microphone and raised her glass. Abby stood up and walked over towards her. “Thank you,” Abby said, hugging Neela. “I know none of this has been easy for you.” Abby grabbed Neela’s hand and she smiled back at her. All of the sudden, the DJ blasted music once again. “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees filled the room. Abby put her hands to her ears. “I don’t think the DJ knows that disco died!” Abby yelled, trying to out scream the music. Neela laughed. Abby noticed Ray standing in the distance, looking at Neela. “It looks like someone is waiting for you,” Abby said, nodding in Ray’s direction. Neela went to turn her head, but Abby stopped her. “No! You can’t look, or else he’ll know we were talking about him!” Neela laughed as Luka glided across the floor towards Abby, holding Joe. Luka mumbled and mixed up the words of the song while moving the baby’s chubby arms in a disco-like motion. Abby laughed and shook her head at the site of her boys. “Am I the only one that knows that disco died?” Abby asked, grabbing Joe’s hand. Luka looked at her, shocked. “Disco died?” He asked, playfully. “Joe, did you hear that? Mommy said that disco died! She’s trying to ruin all the fun!” The baby laughed as Luka spun around quickly. “It’ll serve you right if he throws up on you,” Abby said, smiling. The song came to an end and Maggie walked over towards them. “Here, let me take the baby,” she said, reaching her arms out for Joe. “You two have some fun! It’s your wedding day!”
The old, white haired DJ picked up the microphone. “This song is from the groom to the bride and it’s one of my very own personal favorites. So, can we have a round of applause for our bride and groom, Abby and Luka as they take the dance floor.” Everyone clapped as Luka extended his hand towards Abby. “We have a song?” Abby asked, looking at Luka funny. He smiled. “Well, we were supposed to, but we never picked one, so I picked it,” he said. Luka put his arms around Abby’s waste as the song began to play. She smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck as the words began. “You know, this is one of my favorite songs ever,” Abby said, grinning at Luka. “Well, you can’t go wrong with the Beatles,” he said, laughing. Abby looked up at him. “How did you know?” She asked. He looked down and smiled. “Your mother,” he said. Abby glanced over at Maggie, rocking Joe in her lap. “And, I heard you,” Luka added a moment later. “You heard me?” Abby asked, embarrassed. “When?” Luka laughed. “Well, sometimes when we are in the car and it comes on the radio, you hum it to yourself.” Abby laughed. “You caught me,” she said, standing on her tippy toes and kissing Luka’s lips. “It’s perfect,” she whispered to him.
“In My Life” By The Beatles
There are places I'll remember All my life though some have changed Some forever not for better Some have gone and some remain All these places have their moments With lovers and friends I still can recall Some are dead and some are living In my life I've loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers There is no one compares with you And these memories lose their meaning When I think of love as something new Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more
Though I know I'll never lose affection For people and things that went before I know I'll often stop and think about them In my life I love you more In my life I love you more
Abby glanced up at Luka grinning throughout the entire song. “What?” He finally asked. “You won’t stop smiling at me.” Abby laughed. “Well, I can pout if you want me to,” she said, scruffing his hair. He shook his head to try to fix it. “My hands are a little busy right now,” he said, as he gently rubbed his hands along Abby’s spine. “I’m just happy, that’s all,” Abby said. “I really cannot stop smiling.” “Me either,” Luka said. Abby looked around and then looked back up at Luka. “We really did it,” she said in disbelief. “We really did it,” he repeated.
From the corner of her eye, Abby noticed Neela dancing with Ray off in the corner. “Look,” Abby said, spinning around a bit so that Luka could glance over at them too. “Young love,” he said, shaking his head. Abby moved her arms from around Luka’s neck and wrapped them around his upper back, pulling him in closer. “And what are we?” She asked. “Old love?” Luka leaned down and put his nose against Abby’s. “We’re crazy love,” he said, winking at Abby. She laughed and pushed him away for a moment before quickly pulling him back. “Yeah, we are pretty crazy, aren’t we?” She asked, and Luka shook his head. “I think we’re perfect,” he said. Abby leaned her head into Luka’s chest and began to hum the last verse of the song. He smiled to himself, and ran his finger’s through Abby’s wavy hair. He leaned down and gently kissed the top of her head. Although it was faint, Luka heard Abby gently sing the last line of the song. “In my life, I love you more,” she sang. As the last few notes of the song played, Luka reached up and put his hands on either side of Abby’s face. He smiled as her eyes searched his. Then he leaned in and kissed her.
When Abby opened her eyes, the room was silent. “I sang for you,” she said to Luka. He smiled at her. “I know,” he said. “It was nice, you should since more often.” Abby laughed. “Hey, look,” she said, glancing over towards the corner where Neela and Ray were dancing. Abby and Luka watched and smiled as the two kissed each other. “Ahh, the first kiss,” Luka said. “It’s always the best.” Abby laughed. “I kissed you first!” She said. “And I asked you out! Talk about backwards!” Luka laughed. “Well, that’s what we do,” Luka said. “We do everything backwards.” Luka turned Abby in the direction of Joe. “Yeah, you’ve got that right!” She said.
As the next song began to play, Luka’s eyes lit up. I love this song!” Luka yelled, his face beaming. Abby covered her face. “Luka, don’t you dare!” She said, grabbing onto his shirt, but it was too late. With his Croatian accent and jumbled words, Luka began to belt out what he thought were the words to “Copacabana.” “Remember this song?” Luka asked Abby. She laughed. “Yeah, I remember,” she said, covering her face again. “That was the night, in the car, when we…” Abby reached up and covered Luka’s mouth. “Shhssh!” She said. “Don’t shhsh me!” He yelled back, smiling. “Oh, Luka,” Abby said. “Just shut up and dance with me!” Luka grabbed Abby’s hands and began singing and dancing. Abby laughed at Luka’s terrible singing and ridiculous moves, but God, he was so adorable. He ran over and grabbed Joe from Abby’s arms and brought him back to the dance floor, waving the baby’s arms around while he sang. Abby laughed as Luka pulled her close to him. She wrapped one arm around him and put the other on Joe’s back. Together they stood, forever as a family.

Chapter Fifty-Five: “First Night Apart”
The limo door was closed and Abby wrapped her hands around Luka’s body and collapsed with her head on his chest. “I’m exhausted!” She said, closing her eyes as Luka rubbed her arms. Luka leaned down and kissed Abby’s forehead and she opened her eyes. “It’s our wedding night,” Luka said, grinning at her as he tucked a loose piece of hair behind her ear. “So, what does that mean? That we are now officially cleared by the Catholic church to have sex with each other?” Abby asked, taking off Luka’s bow tie. He closed his eyes and kissed her forehead. “Mmm hmm,” he mumbled and then he kissed her nose. “Lots and lots of sex.” Abby leaned up and kissed Luka for a moment and then pulled him down on top of her. He took off his tuxedo jacket. “We should….probably….wait,” Abby managed to say, in between kisses. “Probably,” Luka said, smiling. A moment later, the car came to a stop. They both laughed as Luka rolled onto the floor. “That’s our luck,” Abby said, looking at Luka’s bow tie. “Who invented these things anyway?” She asked suddenly. Luka gave her a funny glare. “What?” He asked, confused. “Bow ties,” she said. “They are really stupid looking.” Luka laughed. “Your right, they are,” he said.
By the time they got back to the apartment, Maggie was already there. “I put Joe down,” she said. “He fell asleep on the ride home.” Abby nodded. “Thanks,” she said. “Can you unzipper this for me?” She asked, turning her back to her mother. Maggie gently brushed Abby’s hair out of the way and unzippered her dress. Luka was already in the bedroom. “Are you sure you’ll be okay with him?” Abby asked, looking towards the nursery. “I’ll be fine, Abby,” Maggie said. “It’s just for two days, and then we’ll be on our way to meet you in Croatia.” Abby nodded. “Okay,” she said, smiling at her mother. “Thanks.”
When Abby walked into the bedroom, Luka was dressed but his shirt was still off. She quickly took off her dress and threw on a shirt, then she walked up behind him and put her arms around him. “Don’t do that,” he said. “What?” Abby asked innocently. “I just got dressed.” Abby laughed. “So what?” She said, kissing him and walking towards the bed. A moment later, they rolled over on the bed and there was a tap on the bedroom door. Abby sighed and Luka rolled off of her and banged his head into the pillow. “The limo is waiting,” Maggie called through the door. “You don’t want to miss your flight.” Luka got up and threw on his t-shirt and Abby pulled on a pair of slacks. “Mothers,” she said. “Never there when you need them, always there when you don’t!” Luka laughed. “Now, that isn’t a nice thing to say!” He said, grabbing his suitcase. “Are you all packed?” He said, nodding towards Abby’s suitecase. She nodded and he picked it up.
Abby walked into the nursery as Luka took the bags to the car. She rubbed her hands through Joe’s dark hair as he slept. A moment later, Luka was back at her side. “It’s just for two days,” Luka said, putting his arm around Abby. “I know,” she said. “But I’ve only been away from him for one night in his entire life.” She bent down and kissed him and Luka did the same. “Volim te, Joe,” Luka said as he kissed his little boy’s head. Maggie hugged and kissed both of them goodbye. “Now, you two have fun!” She said as they walked out the door. “I’ll see you in two days!” Abby laughed as they walked down the stairs. “Two days too soon,” she said. Luka glared at her. “I’m joking, just joking!”

Chapter Fifty-Six: “Riding in Planes With Abby”
Abby was not a fan of flying. “You know, there is just something really odd about something that is hundreds of feet long, made of steel and weighs a few tons…flying over an ocean,” she said, fumbling with her seat belt. The lady in the seat across the aisle looked over at Abby, terrified. Luka scratched his head. “She’s a little anxious,” he said, apologizing to the woman. Abby dropped her hands dejectedly. “God, I can’t get this. I think my seatbelt is broken,” she said, sitting up in her seat and looking for the flight attendant. Luka leaned over and clicked the seatbelt into place. “Oh sure, now it works!” She said, pressing the buttons on the tiny screen on the back of the seat behind her. “How does this thing work?” She said, pushing all of the buttons. Luka grabbed her hand. “Abby, we still have about five more hours before we get to Croatia, so you need to try to calm down,” he said, gently rubbing her arms with two of his fingers. Abby shivered. “Are you cold?” He asked, looking up the aisle. “I can get you a blanket.” Abby shook her head. “I’m not cold,” she said, finishing the last drop of her third glass of water. “I have to pee,” she said, as she quickly unbuckled her seatbelt and stood up. “Can you come with me?” She asked, looking down at Luka. He laughed. “The bathroom is right there,” he said. “I’m only like 15 feet away.” Abby sighed. “I know, but airplane bathrooms creep me out,” she said. “You just have to wait outside the door,” that’s all. Luka rolled his eyes and he unbuckled his seatbelt. The woman next to them gave another un-approving glance. “She has a bladder problem too,” Luka said as the walked past the woman. Abby punched him playfully. “Don’t tell people that! They’ll think I’m weird!” Luka laughed. “Well, I’m sorry to ruin your party Abby, but she already thinks your nuts!” Abby cringed as she flipped on the bathroom light and stepped inside. “Don’t go anywhere, okay?” She said to Luka before she closed the door. “Okay,” he said. “I’ll wait here.”
Luka waited outside the bathroom door for a few minutes. Then he gently tapped on the door. “Abby, are you okay in there?” He asked. “Uh, just a minute,” she said. A flight attendant walked by. “Is everything okay, sir?” She asked, looking towards the bathroom. Luka nodded. “I’m just waiting for my wife,” he said. She nodded and walked away. Luka knocked on the door again. “Abby! The flight attendant is looking at my funny. What are you doing?” He heard Abby fumbling around in the bathroom. “Luka, I can’t find the thing!” “What thing?” He asked, trying to whisper. “The thing to flush the toilet. Where is it?” Luka rolled his eyes. “On the toilet!” He said. “Just look for it!” He heard the toilet seat slam down against the toilet. “I am looking and I can’t find it!” She said back. Luka jiggled the door handle. “Abby, just open the door and let me in!” Abby cracked the door open and looked around, then she quickly pulled him inside. “Shut the door!” She said, moving Luka to the side and then closing and locking the door. “Why?” He asked. “People might see us in here together and thing we are doing something we shouldn’t be.” Luka laughed as he successfully flushed the toilet. “See, it was right there,” he said, pointing to the side of the toilet. “Well, I didn’t see it,” Abby said.
Luka narrowed his eyes and laughed at Abby. Her face was serious. “What?” She asked. Luka shook his head. “Nothing,” he answered. Abby grabbed Luka by the belt loop and spun him around. “I have to wash my hands,” she said, turning her back to him. She looked at him through the tiny mirror as he stood behind her. She washed her hands with soap and then turned around. “Do you see any paper towels?” They both turned around together, squished together in the tiny bathroom. “Here, use some toilet paper,” Luka said, handing it to Abby. “Thanks, she said as she dried her hands. “This is gross, let’s get the hell out of here,” Abby said. “You go out first and then I’ll follow.” Luka rolled his eyes. “Why don’t we just go out together?” He asked. Abby shook her head. “Oh yeah, that will look really great….the two newlyweds coming out of the airplane bathroom together! How classy!” Luka laughed. “Well we don’t look like newlyweds, and besides, we didn’t do anything wrong!” As Luka went to reach for the door handle, they hit a patch of turbulence and Abby stumbled into Luka. He stumbled backwards into the door and hit his already bent over head on the top of the bathroom ceiling. The light bulb flickered for a moment before there was total darkness. “Oh, this is great,” Abby said. “Just open the door.” Luka moved his hand around blindly until he found the handle. He jiggled it and then began to bang it with his hand. “What’s wrong?” Abby asked, clinging to Luka’s shirt. “I can’t get it open,” he said, still fumbling with the door. “What do you mean you can’t get it open?” Abby said, pushing Luka to the side and trying herself. “When you fell into me, I think we jammed it,” he said, trying not to laugh. “You mean, we’re like…stuck in here?” Luka chuckled. “I think so,” he said. Abby sighed. “Oh great,” she said. “Talk about my worst nightmare come true.” Luka began to laugh and a moment later, Abby did the same.
There was a gentle tapping on the other side of the door. “Is everything okay in there?” It was the voice of the flight attendant. “We heard a crash.” Abby and Luka continued to laugh. “I think they found us out,” he said. “No shit,” Abby answered. Luke spoke up. “Uh, my wife was having trouble finding the…what do you call it…toilet flusher. The light burned out and she couldn’t see, so I came in to help her. When we hit the turbulence, I stumbled into the door and I think we jammed the door shut,” Luka said, holding in his laughter. “Okay, sir,” the woman said. “Just hang on and we’ll try to get you out as soon as we can.
Abby and Luka stood, leaning together while they waited for help. Luka began to bounce around a little bit. “What are you doing?” Abby asked. “Now I have to pee,” Luka said. Abby groaned. “Well, where do you want me to go?” She asked. Luka laughed. “There isn’t anywhere you can go,” he said as he unzippered his pants. “Eww, Luka, just wait,” Abby groaned. “I have to go,” he said. “What’s the big deal? It’s nothing you haven’t seen before,” he said playfully. “Yuck,” Abby said. “There is nothing more sexy than a airport bathroom.” Luka re-zippered his pants and they shifted spots while he washed his hands. Abby fumbled around and then handed him a piece of toilet paper. “Thank you,” he said. A team of flight attendants tried desperately to un-jam the bathroom door. After a little while, Luka sighed and closed the toilet seat and sat down. “My legs hurt, and I’m squished, and sweating,” Luka complained. Abby folded her arms and stood against the wall opposite the door. “Me too,” she said. Once again, there was a tap at the door. “Any luck?” Abby asked, her voice was hopeful. The flight attendant hesitated. “It seems that the force of your husband hitting the wall dislodged one of the pieces and I’m afraid we don’t have the proper equipment on board to fix it,” she said. Abby chuckled. “So what are you saying? That we are stuck in this bathroom for the next 4 hours?” There was silence on the other side of the door for a moment. “We are really sorry for the inconvenience. I’m sure that Continental airlines will reimburse you for your discomfort. We’ll block this section off so none of the other passengers come and try to use this particular bathroom. If there is anything you need…” The flight attendant began, but then stopped herself. “I’m sorry,” it’s a force of habit, she said, apologizing. “It’s okay,” Luka called through the door. “I’m sure we’ll be fine, thank you.” A few moments later, the flight attendants were gone. “Everything will be okay?” Abby asked. “We are stuck in a dark, hot and crowded airplane bathroom. We have no food, no seatbelts, and it kind of smells in here.” Luka pulled Abby down onto his lap. “I’ll be your seatbelt,” he said, kissing her neck. Abby turned to face him. Her eyes had adjusted to the darkness and she could make out his face. “Well, what are we supposed to do for the next 4 hours?” She asked, sighing. Luka lifted up the back of Abby’s shirt and ran his hands along her spine. “I can think of a few things,” he said, leaning in to kiss her. “Like what?” Abby asked playfully. She had been wanting him all day. Luka stood up and she unbuttoned his shirt and then lifted off his undershirt. Then Abby leaned in and kissed his chest. “You read my mind,” he whispered in her ear and then he kissed her neck. Abby chuckled. “But we have to be quiet,” Abby said. Luka laughed. “They blocked this whole little section off, remember?” He said. “So what are you saying?” Abby asked. “That maybe if we bang hard enough against the door, it’ll open up?” Luka laughed. “Maybe I don’t want it to open,” he said. Abby stumbled forward into him. “Me either,” she laughed.
They sat together, exhausted and sweating. “Well that was fun,” Luka said. He felt Abby nod in agreement, her head was leaning against his sweaty chest. “What time is it?” She asked, reaching out for his wrist. She held the watch close to her face and Luka reached out with his other hand and pressed in the watch light. “Let there be light!” Abby laughed. “How much longer do we have?” Abby asked. “Luka examined the watch. “We should be landing anytime now.” Not a second later, there was a knock at the door. “We are going to be landing any moment. Just be cautious,” the flight attendant said. The two of them laughed. “Crap, Luka, we need to get dressed!” Abby said, standing up and reaching around for her scattered clothes. “Wait, what is this?” She said, looking at a piece of clothing she found. Are these my pants?” She stepped into the pants and pulled them up around her waste. The pants fell off of her. “Nope, there are yours,” she said, stepping out of the pants. She continued to search for clothes. “I can’t see anything!” She said, bending down and reaching for clothes. Suddenly there was a thud. “Oww! Oh my God that hurt!” Abby said, stumbling backwards and grabbing her head. “What happened?” Luka asked, reaching out her for. “I hit my head…on something…the sink I think,” Abby said. “I think I’m bleeding,” Abby said. “Luka, am I bleeding?” Luka squinted his eyes and tried to look at Abby’s head. “I can’t see,” he said. “Hang on.” He held up his wrist and turned on the light of his watch. “Just a little,” he said, as he grabbed a piece of toilet paper and dapped it with water from the sink. “There,” he said, holding the cold compress to Abby’s cut. “All better?” Abby rested her head on his shoulder. “Yes, thank you,” she said.
By the time the crew got the door open, Abby and Luka had successfully re-dressed and Abby’s bleeding had stopped. They both shielded their eyes from the bright light of the airplane. “We are so sorry for your inconvenience,” a Continental airlines employee said. Luka tried to stretch his neck. “That’s okay,” Abby said. “We managed. Isn’t the right hunny?” She said, smiling at Luka. He nodded and smiled.
Abby and Luka laughed all the way out of the airport. They got into the rental car and Luka began to drive. “Now, that’s a story to tell the kids!” Abby laughed. “Oh, the kids?” Luka asked. “Now we have kids?” Abby rolled her eyes. “Well, we might…after today!” Luka laughed. Abby glanced out the window as they headed up a steep hill. “Okay, close your eyes,” Luka said. Abby smiled at him and then closed her eyes. “Now, when you open them, I want you to look out your window. You’ll have the best view in all of Croatia.” Abby waited for Luka’s command and then opened her eyes. Her jaw dropped. “Oh my God, Luka, that’s incredible! It’s so beautiful!” Abby gasped. Luka looked over and Abby, her face was full of joy and wonder. “It is beautiful,” he repeated. And Luka wasn’t talking about the view.
