Chapter Fifty-Seven: “A Long Time Gone”
Luka pulled the tiny European car off to the side of the road and then both he and Abby got out of the car. Abby walked towards him and wrapped her arms around his waist. “Wow,” she said. “I have never seen anything like this in my entire life.” They both glanced down at the bright blue water below them. “It’s amazing,” Abby said. Luka nodded and wrapped his arms around Abby a little more tightly. A gust of wind blew and Abby’s hair blew into her face. She wiped it out of her eyes and leaned her head against Luka’s chest. “We just got her and this already beats my first honeymoon,” Abby said. Luka laughed. “Where did you go the first time?” He asked. “Jamaica,” Abby answered. Luka smiled. “Jamaica sounds pretty nice to me,” he said. Abby laughed. “Well, Jamaica was nice,” she started. “But at the time, my husband seemed more interested in the Jamaican maids than me.” Luka laughed. “Well, don’t worry,” Luka said. “We don’t have any maids here.” Abby looked up at him and smiled. “Good,” she said. “Well, we better get going,” Luka said. “We have a bit of a drive before we reach the hotel.” Abby sighed. “Promise me we’ll come back here,” she said, looking up at Luka. “Even if it’s thirty years from now when we’re really, really old.” Luka smiled and laughed. “Thirty years from now we’ll be my father’s age,” Luka laughed. Abby groaned. “Okay, how about we come back in 5 years?” She asked. “By then Joe will be old enough to remember and appreciate it.” Luka nodded. “Okay,” he said. “In five years, we’ll come back here. I promise.” Abby smiled as she walked around to the other side of the car and got in. Luka started the engine and they were on their way.
As they drove, Abby’s stomach growled loudly, and Luka looked over at her and laughed. “What was that?” He asked, still laughing. “I’m hungry,” Abby said, holding her stomach. “Do you realize we haven’t eaten in almost 24 hours?” Luka shook his head. “I think there is a McDonalds about 10 miles up the road,” he said, grinning at Abby. “They have McDonalds in Croatia?” Abby asked, amazed. Luka nodded. “Abby, they have McDonalds everywhere,” he said, laughing. “No kidding!” She said, still rather amazed. Luka chuckled to himself. “You’re like a kid in a candy store,” Luka said, smiling at Abby. Abby’s mouth opened wide. “You totally stole that from me!” She said, laughing. Luka shook his head. “I don’t think so,” he said, still laughing. “Yes you did!” She said. “After we…you know…in the baby store,” she said. “You had that stupid grin on your face and I said that to you, and if I remember correctly, you had no idea what I was talking about.” Luka looked at her briefly and then turned his head back to the road. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said. “And we are both adults here….what did we do in the baby store?” He said, grinning but keeping his eyes on the road. “Ugh!” Abby said. “Luka you are such a….guy!” She said, pushing her hair out of her face and sighing. “I know,” Luka said. “It’s something I’m quite proud of. And one day Joe is going to be just like me.” He said, laughing. Abby shook her head. “You’ll pay,” Abby said. “If we ever have a daughter, I’ll get even!” Luka looked at her. “I thought you didn’t want a daughter?” Luka asked, his face more serious. “When did I say that?” Abby asked, her face was thoughtful. “When you were pregnant with Joe, you said you’d be better with a boy…that the whole mother-daughter thing scares the hell out of you.” Abby nodded. “Wow, you do listen when I talk,” she said. “I’m impressed.” They were silent for a moment. “Well, that was a long time ago,” she said, looking out the window. “I’m not the same person anymore.” Luka laughed. “What?” Abby asked. “Sure you are, Luka said, glancing over at her for a moment. “You’re still Abby,” he said. “Now you are just more…practical.” Abby nodded. “I guess that’s a good way to put it,” she said as they pulled into the McDonald’s parking lot. “Wow, it even looks the same,” she said, looking around the empty parking lot. Only one other car was parked there. “I think I see a spot waaaaay over there,” Abby said, laughing. “Haha,” Luka said sarcastically. “You’re soo funny Abby!” She shrugged. “I thought it was funny,” she said, elbowing Luka’s arm.
They sat in the parking lot and Abby quickly stuffed some French fries into her mouth. “These aren’t too bad,” she said, looking at a French fry that she held in her hand. “Don’t you want any?” She said, holding the box out in front of Luka’s nose. He shook his head. “No thanks,” he said. “I’ll wait to eat some real food.” Abby shrugged. “Okay,” she said. Luka turned to her, his face was serious again. Abby looked at the expression on his face closely. “What’s up?” She asked as she swallowed a mouthful of food and took a sip of diet Coke. Luka turned and faced forward. He put both of his hands on the wheel. “Luka, talk to me,” Abby said, putting down her Coke. “I haven’t been back home in such a long time,” Luka said. Abby saw the sad expression which she now saw on fewer occasions emerge once again. “I used to bring Marko and Dasna here,” he said, his voice was low, but a smile crossed his lips. “I would take them fishing,” he started. “Marko loved it, but Dasna was just a little girl, and she hated going. So, I promised her that if she was a good girl, I’d bring her to McDonald’s on the way back home.” Luka chuckled to himself. “I made her promise not to tell her mother. Daniela hated them eating that food. But the funny thing was that Dasna hardly ever actually ate the food. All she wanted was the little toy that came in that children’s meal. What was it called?” He said, turning to Abby. “A happy meal?” She answered. Luka laughed. “That’s it,” he laughed. “A happy meal. That’s all she ever wanted. It’s been so long that I forget what it’s called.” Abby leaned across the seat and put her head on Luka’s shoulder. “Just think, soon enough Joe will be old enough to go fishing with you. I’m sure he’d love that,” Abby said. Luka looked at her and smiled. “You think so?” He asked. Abby nodded and closed her eyes. “I see the way he looks at you, Luka,” she said. “He’s just a baby but he already loves you. He knows how much you love him…the way you are with him…the way you talk to him. He already sees you as his hero.” Luka shook his head. “I’m anything but a hero,” he said, lowering his head. Abby sat up and looked at him. “He’s your son,” she started. “A parent is always a kid’s hero.” Abby laughed. “Even though Maggie and I have had our differences, I always looked up to her.” Luka smiled. “With my father too,” he said, smiling slightly.
They finally reached the hotel a little past midnight. Luka lugged the bags into the room and Abby closed the door behind him. Abby walked right to the window and leaned her face close to he glass sliding doors that led to a balcony overlooking bright blue water. “Isn’t this a great view?” Abby asked, turning towards Luka. She found him sprawled out on the bed, his hands behind his head and his eyes closed. “Mmm hmm,” he mumbled. Abby smiled and walked over towards the bed. Luka removed his arms from behind his head and reached out for Abby. She smiled as she laid down next to him, wrapping her legs around his and laying her head on his chest. “This is nice,” she said. “Mmm hmm,” Luka mumbled once again. “Goodnight, Luka,” Abby said, sitting up and gently kissing his chest. “Goodnight, Abby,” he said, stroking her hair.

Chapter Fifty-Eight: “From Darkness to Light”
Abby opened her eyes to find Luka’s arm wrapped around her own and she smiled. She brushed her hair behind her ear and she turned around to face him. He was still sleeping, the sound of his heavy breathing made that clear. Abby gently lifted his arm from around her and sat up. Stretching out, she walked towards the kitchenette to get a drink. Her eyes opened wide as she looked at the clock. “7 o’clock?” She asked herself. She walked back to the bedroom and gently tapped Luka’s arm. “Luka, get up,” she said. “It’s 7 o’clock!” Luka rolled over and groaned. “Abby, it’s early, go back to sleep,” he said to her. Abby tapped him once again. “It’s 7pm!” She said. Luka rolled over and sat up quickly. “7pm?” He asked, his eyes were small and sleepy. “We slept for like 19 hours!” She said, laughing slightly. Luka flopped back onto the pillow. “That means we missed everything I planned for today,” he said, groaning. Abby leaned down and put her chin on his chest. “That doesn’t matter,” she said. Luka opened his eyes. “Well, what are we going to do now?” He asked. “I had the whole day planned.” Abby shrugged and laid down next to him once again. “We can just….lay here,” she said. Luka turned his head and looked at her. “Lay here?” He asked. “And do what?” Abby smiled. “I don’t know,” she said. “We can lay here and do nothing at all.” Luka let out a funny laugh. “Lay here and not do a single thing?” Abby nodded. “Uh-huh,” she said. “Okay,” Luka said.
"Chasing Cars"
We'll do it all Everything On our own
We don't need Anything Or anyone
If I lay here If I just lay here Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
I don't quite know How to say How I feel
Those three words Are said too much They're not enough
If I lay here If I just lay here Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Forget what we're told Before we get too old Show me a garden that's bursting into life
Let's waste time Chasing cars Around our heads
I need your grace To remind me To find my own
If I lay here If I just lay here Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Forget what we're told Before we get too old Show me a garden that's bursting into life
All that I am All that I ever was Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see
I don't know where Confused about how as well Just know that these things will never change for us at all
If I lay here If I just lay here Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
Abby rolled over onto her back next to Luka. The two of them sat at the ceiling for a short while. Luka glanced over at Abby without turning his head. He looked at the side profile of her face and noticed the pensive look in her eyes. Her face was somewhat scrunched up and her lips were closed tightly. “What are you thinking about?” He asked, turning onto his side and putting his arm across her stomach. “I don’t know,” she said, still staring. Luka rolled onto his stomach. “Sure you do,” he said. “Tell me.” Abby turned onto her side to face him. “Do you really want to have another baby with me?” She asked, her face was thoughtful. Luka moved his hand and gently rested it on her shoulder. “Yes,” he said. “If the time was right and it’s what you wanted.” Abby nodded her head and rolled onto her back once again. “Okay,” she said. Luka laughed. “Okay?” He asked. “That’s it?” Abby turned her head towards him and smiled. “It was just a question,” she said, justifying her abrupt answer. Luka nodded. “I know,” he said. “But, what do you think?” He asked. Abby bit her lip. “You mean, do I want to have another baby?” She asked. Luka nodded. “Do you want to have another baby?” He repeated. Abby propped her head up with her elbow. “I would love to,” she said. “But I was just thinking and trying to be realistic.” “Realistic about what?” Luka asked. Abby sighed. “Well, we aren’t getting any younger, Luka,” she said. “If we want to have another baby, it has to be soon.” Luka nodded. “I know,” he said. Abby sat up and brought her knees to her chest. “Joe isn’t even 1 yet,” she said. “I want him to have his share of attention, but I don’t want to wait too long. If we are going to do this, it has to be soon…like really soon.” Luka sat up and kissed Abby’s arm. “What are you saying?” He asked. “You want to start trying…now?” He asked playfully. Abby laughed and hit him playfully. “I didn’t mean right now,” she said. “Kerry would love me, coming back from my honeymoon…knocked up.” Abby laughed at her own words. Luka smiled. “Kerry loves kids,” he said, leaning in to kiss her. Abby put her fingers to Luka’s lips, stopping his kiss, her face was serious. “Luka, I’m trying to be serious here,” she said. “Are you really sure you want to do this?” Luka nodded. “Yes, I’m sure,” he said. “I love you, Abby and I would love to have another child with you.” Abby’s face brightened a bit. “Okay,” she said. “But let’s be careful at least until the honeymoon is over.” Luka nodded in agreement. “Deal,” he said, reaching out his hand to shake her’s. Abby pushed him back onto the pillow and leaned in to kiss him. “It’s our honeymoon,” she said. “I am not shaking your hand!” Luka laughed and kissed her back.
They laid in bed together all night long. At about one, Luka drifted off to sleep, but Abby’s find was racing. She bounced around in the bed trying to get comfortable. Luka mumbled a bit in his sleep. “I can’t sleep,” Abby whispered, but Luka continued to sleep. Abby threw the blankets off of herself and got out of bed. Cold, she threw a sweatshirt on and quietly slid open the glass door leading to the balcony. A cold gust of wind hit her face as she closed the door. Luka was still sleeping in bed, unmoving. Like a habit, Abby smiled at him and thought of Joe. She stretched her arms out and took in the fresh, Croatian air. Here she was, halfway around the world in this beautiful place and she was going to enjoy it. She looked down, but below her saw nothing but darkness, she only heard the gentle crashing of the ocean waves in the distance. Abby looked down at the ring on her finger and smiled. Thoughts of Luka and Joe rushed through her head and she instantly felt warm inside. A moment later, Abby heard the sound of the sliding glass door. “Can’t sleep?” Luka asked, wrapping his arms around Abby. She smiled as he kissed her cheek. Abby shook her head. “It’s too quiet to sleep,” she said. “I’m used to the sirens wailing and the loud music of our obnoxious neighbors.” Luka laughed. “Me too,” he said. Abby glanced out into the darkness. “Want to go for a walk?” Luka asked. Abby looked and him and nodded her head. “I’d like that,” she said. Luka nodded and smiled too. “Get your shoes,” he said, sliding open the door again.
Abby locked her arm in Luka’s as the walked towards the beach. There was almost complete silence around them and not a person in sight. “Are you sure we’re allowed to do this?” Abby asked, glancing around. “Uh-huh,” Luka said, bending down and sliding off his shoes. “Now, come on!” He said laughing as Abby took off her shoes and followed him. Abby stumbled a little bit as her feet sank into the soft sand and she stumbled backwards. Luka laughed. “Hey, I’m a city girl, remember?” She said, trying to catch up to him. Luka held out his hand. “I remember,” he said.
They walked along together holding hands. Abby turned her head in the direction of the crashing waves. “Is that the ocean?” She asked, squinting her eyes and trying hard to see. “What do you think?” Luka asked, jokingly. Abby broke her hands away from Luka’s. “Well, then I’ll just go find out myself,” she said, running in the direction of the water. Luka shook his head and started after her. “Be careful,” he started, but he was too late. “Holy crap!” He heard Abby yell. “Jesus Christ that is cold!” Luka laughed. “Luka, where are you?” Abby called. “I can’t see a thing.” Luka pulled the flashlight from his pocket and clicked it on. A moment later, he found Abby, her eyes searching. “You had that all along?” She asked, rolling her eyes. “Way not to tell me the water is freezing!” Luka smiled. “I’m sorry,” he said, shrugging. “It’s February, in Croatia, I thought you would have figured that out.” Abby held out her arms. “I’m a city girl, remember?” She asked once more. Luka nodded. “I remember,” he repeated.
Abby held out her hand. He saw her lips chattering in the distance as she wrapped her arms around herself. “Come here,” Luka said, waving his arms. “Let’s get you warmed up.” Abby ran towards him. As she ran with her arms outstretched and a smile on her face, she reminded Luka of a happy little schoolgirl, carefree without a problem in the world. He wished he got to see that side of Abby more often. He wrapped his arms around her as she stood there shivering. “My feet are frozen,” she said, teeth chattering. Luka turned his back towards her and squatted down. “Get on,” he said, laughing. “Wow, I haven’t had one of these in years,” she said as Luka hoisted her up onto his back. She wrapped her arms around his neck and rested his head on her shoulder. “Better?” He asked. “Better,” she answered. Abby grabbed the flashlight from Luka’s hand. She started waving it around in the air and laughing. “Is this our honeymoon or your first trip to Disney World?” Luka asked, laughing. Abby gently bonked him in the head with the flashlight. “Hey, I’ve been to Disney World,” she said. “Maggie took us there once, you know, on one of our moves.” When she spoke, her voice was somewhat sad. “I think I was about eight maybe. We stayed at the crappiest motel ever, and I had an ear infection, but I didn’t care. It was Disney World, and I wasn’t missing out.” Luka laughed again. “I can see how you would act,” he said, smiling back at her. “I remember once we went to the beach,” Abby began. “Maggie lost Eric and started causing a scene. I mean, she totally snapped, lost it in front of hundreds of people. She ran up to this guy and asked him why he took her son. I think she made him cry, he was terrified. And here I am, twelve years old, chasing my crazy mother along the beach, in the mean time, Eric comes back and sits down on a beach chair and eats an ice cream cone. It turns out he just followed the ice cream man. I was humiliated. I didn’t step foot on a beach for years.”
“Seven Years”
Spinning, laughing, dancing to her favorite song A little girl with nothing wrong Is all alone
Eyes wide open Always hoping for the sun And she'll sing her song to anyone that comes along
Fragile as a leaf in autumn Just fallin' to the ground Without a sound
Crooked little smile on her face Tells a tale of grace That's all her own
Spinning, laughing, dancing to her favorite song A little girl with nothing wrong And she's all alone
As Abby finished her sentence, the flashlight went off. “What happened?” Luka asked. Abby banged the flashlight in her hand. “I think it’s dead,” she said. “I can’t see a thing,” Luka said, stumbling forward. Abby squinted her eyes. “Don’t you know where we are?” She asked, flipping the flashlight switch off and on in a panic. “Not when I can’t see,” Luka said. A moment later, Luka tripped on something and stumbled forward. “Oh, shit,” Abby said as he tried to regain his balance, but it was no use, they fell, tumbling into the sand. “Are you alright?” Luka asked as he landed in the sand, throwing Abby down next to him. His only response was Abby’s laughter. “I think so,” she said, in between laughs. “Are you?” Abby asked after her laughing stopped. “I hope so,” Luka said. “But I have no idea where we are.”
Abby sat up and felt sand roll off of her clothes. “Now I’m wet and sandy,” she said. Luka reached down and felt Abby’s wet pants. “Just take them off,” he said. Abby leaned her face closer to Luka’s. “What?” She said, her eyes opened wide. “No one is here anyway,” he said. “And besides, it’s so dark I can hardly see you.” Abby laughed. “Then won’t I be even colder?” She said. Luka grabbed her and rolled her over onto her back in the sand. “I’ll warm you up,” he said, sliding off Abby’s wet pants. “This is insane,” Abby said. She felt Luka nod his head against her chest. “I know,” he said, leaning up and kissing her mouth. Abby couldn’t resist and Luka slid off her pants. Luka took off his jacket and laid it out flat on the sand and rolled on top of it and Abby laid on top of him. “Luka, if anyone sees us,” Abby started as Luka kissed her. “I’m going to kiss you,” she said, laughing. “I mean, kill you.” Luka laughed. “I’d prefer the first,” he said.
“Warmer now,” Luka asked as he lay in the sand with his arms wrapped around Abby. She nodded in response. “Good,” he said. A hint of orange was coming into the dark night sky. “The sun’s coming up,” Luka said to Abby. She sat up a little bit. “You planned this, didn’t you?” She asked, laughing. Luka didn’t answer. “Luka Kovac! I can’t believe you!” Luka laughed as Abby pushed him back into the sand. “Mrs. Kovac,” he started. “I’m your husband, you should know me by now.” Abby laid back next to him, using Luka’s arm as a pillow. “You’ve been my husband for all of like 36 hours!” Abby said.
They laid there silently for a while, both awake but neither speaking. Suddenly, Luka shifted and sat up a little bit. “Abby, there is somewhere I need to go today,” he said. His voice was quiet and emotionless. “You don’t have to go with me if you don’t want to, but I just need to go. I have to go.” Abby sat up and looked at him. “Where are you going?” She asked, clueless. Luka sighed. “The cemetery,” he said, lowering his eyes. Abby gently touched his arm. “To see your family?” She asked, already knowing the answer. Luka nodded. “I understand,” she said, trying to comfort him. He sighed once more. “It’s just….I haven’t been there in such a long time,” he said. “It’s like a left and never looked back.” Abby ran her hands through Luka’s hair. “I know,” she said. “It’s something that you need to do. To give you closure.” Luka nodded. They were silent for a moment. “I’ll go with you, Luka,” she said. “That is if you want me to, or you think you’ll need me. But if you want to go alone, I’ll understand. I’m here for you though, no matter what.” Luka put his hand on Abby’s bare shoulder. “I’d like you to come,” he said, smiling at her. Abby nodded. “Then I’ll come,” she said, leaning in to kiss him. They waited until the sun came up and then they were on their way. Luka carried Abby on his back once again, but this time, the path before them was clear.
Come away with me in the night Come away with me And I will write you a song
Come away with me on a bus Come away with me where they can't tempt us With their lies
I want to walk with you On a cloudy day In fields where the yellow grass grows knee kigh So won't you try to come
Come away with me and we'll kiss On a mountain top Come away with me And I'll never stop loving you
And I want to wake up with the rain Falling on a tin roof While I'm safe there in your arms So all I ask is for you To come away with me in the night Come away with me

Chapter Fifty-Nine: “Love Revisited”
The moment they left the hotel, Luka was silent. His face was expressionless and his stare was vacant. Abby sat silently too. She was scared, scared of the silence and scared for Luka. He had told her about the deaths of his wife and children, but now she would be coming face to face with Luka’s past life. She didn’t know how to feel. They drove for about two hours before they stopped. Luka slowly turned into the old cemetery and greeted the watchman with a forced smile. He quickly spit out a few sentences in Croatian, and the watchman nodded and pointed Luka straight ahead. Abby wrapped her hands closely around her body as they drove further and further into the cemetery. Thousands and thousands of old, almost homemade looking tombstones surrounded the car as they drove on. As if in a bad movie, the sky above them darkened and big gusts of wind stirred up dust from the brown, dirt roads. Luka slowly turned the car around a tiny bend and stopped abruptly. He put the car in park and then sat, staring straight ahead. Abby waited, not sure what to do, or if she should speak.
A few minutes later, Luka flung open the car door. He closed it slowly and then walked around to the other side of the car and opened Abby’s door. She got out and he closed the door behind her and tightly grabbed her hand. They began to walk down a long row of tombstones slowly. Abby heard Luka mumbling to himself in Croatian. His words were so quick, so low, that it made them impossible to understand. Abby wondered if Luka even knew that he was speaking.
I wanted I wanted you to stay 'Cause I needed I need to hear you say That I love you I have loved you all along And I forgive you For being away for far too long So keep breathing 'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore Believe it Hold on to me and, never let me go Keep breathing 'Cause I'm not leaving you anymore Believe it Hold on to me and, never let me go Keep breathing Hold on to me and, never let me go Keep breathing Hold on to me and, never let me go
Suddenly, Luka stopped walking and stepped backwards. He stood there for a moment, staring at the only white tombstone in sight, it was just a few feet ahead. It was then that Abby knew. Only then did it hit her. Luka let go of her hand and looked at Abby. She nodded and stood still as she watched Luka slowly step forward towards the white tombstone. His last few steps were short and wobbily and when he reached the grave, he stood there with his eyes downcast. His eyes were open wide and stared at the inscriptions on the white tombstone. In order on the tombstone, Abby saw the name of Luka’s wife, Daniela followed by the name of their son, Marko and lastly, the name of their little girl, Jasna. After each name were the years of their birth and the year that they died. Abby quickly did the math in her head. Daniela was only twenty six when she died. Their son was 9 and the little girl was only 4 years old.
Luka continued to stand there, simply staring at the tombstone, as if he hadn’t known they had even died. Abby wanted to reach out to him, to hold him and tell him that everything would be okay, but she stood there. She knew what he needed, a moment with his family. Abby hugged herself as the wind picked up. She looked up at the dark grey sky and shivered. She quickly turned back to Luka when she heard him begin to speak. He spoke slowly at first, his Croatian words sounded soothing and happy, much like the phone conversations she’d witnessed him having with his father, Dario. Abby watched as Luka brushed a tear from his eye. As he spoke, his voice began to crack. She watched as his body began to convulse, giant, deep sobs forming deep in his lungs, deep in his heart. It was then that his voice became angry. He began sobbing and yelling, looking up at the sky and then back down at the ground. Luka doubled over, his anger and tears weakening him. He slowly fell to the ground, leaning on his hands and knees. He gripped the grass tightly in his fist, pulling out tiny bits with each horrendous sob.
"Savin' Me"
Prison gates won't open up for me On these hands and knees I'm crawlin' Oh, I reach for you Well I'm terrified of these four walls These iron bars can't hold my soul in All I need is you Come please I'm callin' And oh I scream for you Hurry I'm fallin', I'm fallin'
[Chorus:] Show me what it's like To be the last one standing And teach me wrong from right And I'll show you what I can be Say it for me Say it to me And I'll leave this life behind me Say it if it's worth saving me
Heaven's gates won't open up for me With these broken wings I'm fallin' And all I see is you These city walls ain't got no love for me I'm on the ledge of the eighteenth story And oh I scream for you Come please I'm callin' And all I need from you Hurry I'm fallin', I'm fallin'
[Chorus]
Hurry I'm fallin'
All I need is you Come please I'm callin' And oh, I scream for you Hurry I'm fallin', I'm fallin'
[Chorus]
Hurry I'm fallin'
Abby stood there frozen. Her own eyes filled with tears. She felt helpless. She knew that nothing she could say would comfort him, that void would always remain for him. At that moment, she wanted to fall on the ground and cry too. Suddenly, Abby felt selfish and sinful. Luka had filled the void Abby carried with her all of her life, but she would never be able to do the same for him. She wanted to disappear.
Abby closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She knew what she had to do. So, for the first time in her life, she decided not to run. She loved Luka, and she was going to help him, in any way that she could. She would help him remember. She saw in the tears shed and angry words that Luka loved his family and he should. He was supposed to and she wanted him to. At that moment Abby knew that she would always be sharing Luka’s heart and it was then that she realized that that didn’t matter. Abby took a few steps forward and then crouched down next to Luka. She put her arms around him and he grabbed them and hugged them closer to him. Exhausted, he fell backwards and Abby did the same, falling into the dusty grass above the place where Luka’s other family was buried. Luka leaned into Abby and cried. She held him close, resting her head on his shoulder and gently rocking him back and forth. It was a moment in which no words were needed. No words could possibly begin to express either of their feelings at that moment. But as Luka gripped Abby’s arms and held them close to him, both of them crying together, she knew that he understood.
catch your breath hit the wall scream out loud as you start to crawl back in your cage the only place where they will leave you alone cause the weak will seek the weaker till they've broken them could you get it back again would it be the same fulfillment to their lack of strength at your expense left you with no defense they tore it down
and I have felt the same as you I've felt the same as you I've felt the same
locked inside the only place where you feel sheltered where you feel safe you lost yourself in your search to find something else to hide behind cause the fearful always preyed upon your confidence didn't they see the consequence they pushed you around the arrogant build kingdoms made of the different ones breaking them till they've become just another crown
and I have felt the same as you I've felt the same as you I've felt the same as you I've felt the same
refuse to feel anything at all refuse to slip refuse to fall can't be weak can't stand still watch your back cause no one will
you don't know why they had to go this far traded your worth for these scars for your only company and don't believe the lies that they have told to you not one word was true you're alright you're alright you're alright
and I have felt the same as you I've felt the same as you I've felt the same as you I've felt the same
Abby wiped a tear from her face as she held Luka. He continued to cry as he turned and laid his head in Abby’s lap. She put her hands on his back and then leaned down and kissed his back and the back of his head. She laid her head on his back and closed her eyes until Luka cried his last. Once the hysterical sobs had stopped, Luka quickly turned his head and buried it in Abby’s chest. She wrapped her arms around him and put her hand on the back of his head. Finally, she broke the silence. Gently and very very softly, Abby leaned her face down close to Luka’s ear. “It’s okay to love them,” she said. She felt Luka’s breathing stop and suddenly he lifted his head. His bloodshot eyes looked into her’s. She ran her fingers gently along his tearstained face. “I do love them,” he said, his voice was soft and broken. Luka turned and looked at the tombstone. “I want you to love them, Luka,” she said. “They are part of you, some of the best parts of who you are.” Luka ran his fingers along the inscription of all three of their names. As he reached the last name, that of his little girl, Jasna, he pressed his hand against the letters and lowered his head. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled. “I’m so sorry.” Abby bit her lip as tears welled in her eyes once again. “Volim te,” Luka said. “Volim te, always.” As those final words escaped Luka’s lips, a light rain began to fall. Luka looked up at the sky and held out his hands. Abby stood as her face became drenched with rain. Luka turned and looked at her. “Go,” he said, smiling at her. “I just need a minute.” Abby nodded and ran towards the car, looking back before she climbed in.
Abby opened the glove compartment in search of tissues, but found nothing other than a tiny toy. Abby held it in her hands and glanced at it. It was a tiny toy from a McDonald’s happy meal. Abby hadn’t even noticed that Luka had slipped it in there. She gripped the toy tightly in her hand as she looked out the window at Luka. He stood now, leaning over with his hand on the top of the tombstone. Without even thinking, Abby jumped out of the car. In the pouring rain, she ran through the muddy field and stood a few feet beside Luka. He turned to look at her, her breathing was hard and her eyes were wide. Luka turned to face her and she walked slowly towards him. When she reached him, Abby reacher into her pocket and unfolding her hand, revealed the tiny McDonald’s toy. Abby watched as Luka stared at it, his eyes becoming glazed again. Luka took the toy from Abby’s hand and smiled at her. Abby turned to walk away but turned to glance at Luka one last time. He bent down in front of the grave. Then Luka gently kissed the toy in his hand and set in down in front of the tombstone. He ran his fingers along the three inscribed names one more time and then blessed himself.
Abby waited for him to walk towards the car before she opened the door. As she went to get in, she felt his arms around her waist. Abby turned and gratefully buried her head in Luka’s wet clothes. “Volim te,” he whispered to her as he held her close. A few minutes later, they were in the car, both dripping wet and freezing. Neither said a word as Luka turned on the engine. He looked back just one last time before he drove away.
"Learning To Breathe"
Hello, good morning, how you do? What makes your rising sun so new? I could use a fresh beginning too All of my regrets are nothing new So this is the way that I say I need You This is the way that I'm
Learning to breathe I'm learning to crawl I'm finding that You and You alone can break my fall I'm living again, awake and alive I'm dying to breathe in these abundant skies
Hello, good morning, how you been? Yesterday left my head kicked in I never, never thought that I would fall like that Never knew that I could hurt this bad
So this is the way I say I need You This is the way that I say I love You This is the way that I say I'm Yours This is the way, this is the way
By the time they reached Luka’s father’s house, their clothes were not longer dripping and their eyes were no longer blood shot. Abby saw Dario peep his head through the blinds when he heard the sound of the car doors closing. Luka held Abby’s hand as they walked towards the house. Still wet and mud covered, they were quite a sight, but Dario didn’t say a word. He hugged Luka first, kissing him once on each cheek and did the same with Abby. As Abby stepped inside, she turned to find Luka hugging his father once again. She knew that he knew. Maggie walked into the living room and opened her eyes wide. “Abby, what the hell happened?” She asked as she looked Abby up and down. Without much hesitation, Abby walked over and hugged her mother. Happy and a bit surprised, Maggie clung on to her daughter.
Luka carried the luggage into his old bedroom. After he set down his baggage, he walked over and joined Abby at Joe’s crib. Abby was staring at the baby, gently touching his arm with two of her fingers. Luka bent down and kissed the baby’s head, then he turned and kissed Abby’s cheek.
The plane ride home was a lot more subdued than the ride there. Maggie laughed as Luka filled her in on the crazy details. Abby sat quietly with her head resting against the seat, her face turned in the direction of the baby sleeping in the seat next to her. Luka looked over at her and grabbed her hand. They smiled at each other. Abby loved his smile now more than ever before.

Chapter Sixty: “The Second Time Around”
Together, Abby and Luka enjoyed the little things in life like they never had before. They celebrated everything. Luka proudly followed little Joe around as he took his first wobbily steps holding Abby’s index fingers and then his very first steps on his own. Abby took the camera and watched as Joe shoved his first birthday cake all over his chubby face and then leaned over and put his cake filled hands in his daddy’s hair. “Look who has the camera now!” Abby said as Luka laughed at his cake covered hair. He glanced up at Abby and smiled as he took Joe out of his high chair and grabbed a piece of cake in his hands. Then he scrambled to his feet and chased Abby around the apartment. A moment later, Luka had the camera again, this time getting all three of their faces, full of cake on film. He leaned over and licked some icing off of Abby’s cheek with his tongue and the baby giggled.
Luka stood outside of the bathroom door on the night of Joe’s first birthday and waited for Abby, the camera still rolling. Abby came out of the bathroom, smiling and holding her hands behind her back. “Is that thing on?” She asked, looking into the camera. “This thing?” Luka asked. “Nope.” Abby laughed. “Luka, I see the red button, I’m not stupid,” she said. Luka laughed. “Tell me!” He said, his voice excited. Abby removed her hands from behind her back and held up the pregnancy test that was in her hand. Luka zoomed in with the video camera. “Does this mean we’re….” He asked, excitement in his voice. Abby nodded. “We’re pregnant,” she said. “We’re going to have a baby!” Luka yelled, leaning in the kiss her. Abby glanced over at the camera and covered the lens, a moment later, Luka switched the power off.
Lena Daniela Kovac was born on on Valentines Day, the perfect gift of love sent by cupid. Luka was by Abby’s side, holding her hand the whole time. Everything went better then planned. "See, I always said that I liked Valentine's Day," Luka said, smiling at Abby. "We may not have gotten married then like I wanted, but this is even better. Now it looks like I have two Valentines." Abby smiled. "Your a lucky man, Luka," she said, laughing and he nodded his head in agreement.
Joe sat in the middle of Abby’s hospital bed with his legs folded in Indian style. “Joe,” Luka called, and the little boy’s head moved towards the basinet where Luka stood. “Are you ready to meet your baby sister?” Luka asked as he gently picked up the tiny baby and walked towards the bed. Joe’s big, bright eyes widened and his mouth opened in excitement. Abby smiled. “My God, Luka, he looks so much like you,” Abby said, looking at Joe. Luka laid their little girl in Abby’s arm and scooped up Joe, tickling his belly. Joe squirmed and laughed. “Well, now we’ve got one of both,” Luka said. “She looks just like you.” Abby looked down at her little girl. “God, let’s hope not,” she said, grinning at Luka. She smiled at her daughter. Luka was right, the baby already looked so much like Abby. Her tiny head was covered with light brown her and her dark eyes were narrow and beautiful like Abby’s. Lena's mouth was the same as both Abby’s and Joe’s. The baby wrapped her tiny fist around Luka’s index finger. “She’s strong like you too,” Luka said. Abby smiled at her little girl. "I'll always look out for you and protect you," Abby whispered softly to the baby. "So, the only reason you'll nee to be strong is to beat up silly boys," she said, looking at Luka and laughing. "I like having another girl around already," she said, gently kissing the baby's head.
“This is Lena,” Abby said as Luka sat on the side of the bed with Joe in his lap. “Baby,” Joe said, reaching out for the baby. “Gentle!” Both Luka and Abby said as Joe reached out and quickly touched the baby’s tiny hand. “Good boy,” Luka said, kissing Joe’s head of dark hair. “We did good, Luka,” Abby said, looking up at him and then at both of their children. Luka ran his hand through Abby’s hair as a tear rolled down her cheek. Like so many times before, Luka bent down and gently kissed the tear away. Abby smiled at him and then kissed his lips. “We did, didn’t we?” He said, looking down at his tiny baby daughter and smiling. “Well, like you said before, 2 is our lucky number,” Luka said, grinning at Abby. She smiled and let out a laugh. “I did say that, didn’t I?” Abby said. Luka nodded. “You know, Luka,” Abby started. “For so many years, I was so afraid of everything, of living really and you were the one who showed me happiness. You helped me get it right. So, yeah, two is our lucky number,” Abby said looking at both of her kids. “Life is so much better the second time around.” Luka smiled at Abby and she knew he understood exactly what she meant. He leaned down and kissed Abby’s lips. “Volim te, Abby,” Luka said. “I love all three of you so much.” “Volim te, Luka,” she said, looking into Luka’s eyes. “More than you’ll ever know.”
