Chapter 8 After a fitful night of sleep, Abby awoke to a strong wave of nausea. She rushed out of her room and into the bathroom, slamming and locking the door behind her. The last thing she needed was her roommates figuring out her secret before she was ready to share it. She heaved into the toilet, glad that the nausea quickly passed. Quickly, she washed up and went back into her room before the others could begin to wonder what was going on. Abby knew that she needed to take a pregnancy test just in case, but she was almost positive that it was true. She knew all the signs, she had been pregnant before. But, she needed to get tested, for the slight fraction of a chance that she was not pregnant. If only she could believe that she wasn’t, that would be so much better. Luckily, Abby had the day off. She had been aggravated with Weaver when she had first suggested that Abby take the day off because quote “I don’t need you and your irritability plaguing this hospital Doctor, so take the day off tomorrow and fix whatever it is that’s bugging you and come back the next day back to your normal perky self.” So, Abby was going to go to a small clinic down town to get tested. She knew that she couldn’t go to County and test for her pregnancy there. Doctor-patient confidentiality didn’t exist when you were an intern at the hospital, especially not if you were Abigail the intern. The last thing that she needed was everyone knowing her secret. Abby got dressed slowly, procrastinating to the very last second. She didn’t want to go. She didn’t want her fears to be true. She just wanted to go back to that day Jake came in and change it all. If only she hadn’t drank with him. If only she had not said those things to Kelly in the first place. But now was not the time for ‘if onlys.’ Now was a time for reality, and Abby was not ready for it. Few Hours LaterAbby sat in the driveway with her head resting on the steering wheel. What was she going to do? The clinic had confirmed her worst fears. She was going to have a baby. The term ‘baby’ made it all seem even more real. It frightened her. How was she ever going to get away with this? Abby reluctantly pulled herself out of her car, trying to keep her emotions in check. She was unsure of who was home, because she didn’t know either Susan or Luka’s schedule for the day. She usually knew them all, but to be fair she had been rather occupied lately.

Merry Christmas everybody!! Chapter 9 Rushing through the door and heading toward the stairs, she ran into Luka, her newest roommate. She couldn’t believe that Susan had let Luka move in with them. She hadn’t even asked her. And now with this secret she was carrying. Susan would probably take a while to catch on, because she had her own life to worry about, but Luka. Well, Luka was a wild card. He might leave her be, but he might catch on quickly. It could be bad. “Woah, there,” Luka joked, taking Abby lightly by the forearms and moving her aside. Abby pulled out of Luka’s grip. “Sorry,” Abby mumbled. “Hey, Ab’s, you okay?” He asked quickly noting her unhappy manner. “Yeah,” Abby replied with a fake smile. “I’m just a little tired is all.” Abby looked up the stairs and then looked back at Luka. “I think I’m going to go upstairs,” Abby told him pointing at the stairs. “I’ll…I’ll be down later.” Luka watched Abby as she walked up the stairs, something wasn’t right. Abby had been acting pretty jumpy lately, and today even more so. He waited a moment before he walked upstairs. He stood outside Abby’s room, contemplating what he should do next. He heard a smothered sob, and his worry heightened. Luka placed out his hand and knocked gently on the door. After a few moments, he heard no response, so he knocked again. “Abby?” “Go away, Luka!” Abby yelled through the door. Luka attempted to open her door, but it was locked. “Abby, are you okay?” Luka heard steps to the door and the lock being unlatched. Abby poked her head through the door. Luka saw that her eyes were puffy with tears. “Yes,” Abby said in thick sarcasm, “I’m perfectly fine!” And she slammed the door. Luka reopened the door, before Abby could lock it again. She stood before him shocked, but didn’t say anything. She just crossed her arms around her defensively. “Alright Abby, I know you aren’t fine. Just know, that if you need to talk, I’ll listen okay?” Luka told her sincerely. Abby shook her head and wiped away a stray tear with her finger. Luka began walking away, but Abby stopped him. “Thank you, Luka,” she said softly.

Chapter 10 Two Weeks LaterAbby had yet to tell anyone that she was pregnant. She continually pushed it in the back of her mind and tried to move on with everyday life. She realized that this was not something she could keep secret forever, but she didn’t want to tell anyone yet. This was simply because she didn’t know what she wanted to do yet. The lying was becoming harder and harder, and Abby found it difficult to stay in the same room with Jake or Kelly. She couldn’t look either in the eyes. She was an adulterous liar, and it was not something she could deal with. She hated herself. And now with the baby to top it all off, it became even harder. She struggled with what she should do. She couldn’t abort the baby, because it was her baby and abortion was something other people did, not her. Although, she had never seen herself as a person who would sleep with a married man either. Of course, she could put the baby up for adoption, she had done it before. However, this time wasn’t like last time. She had people for support, she had a job. She didn’t have a good reason to give it away, and truthfully she really didn’t want to. So, that left her with option three: keep the baby. But that in it self brought about even more decisions. Did she tell Jake? Did she keep it a secret? Would she tell her friends who was the father? Would she lie about the father? Should she just leave town and raise the baby somewhere else? All of the questions and the stress from lying and having a baby had made Abby sick. Physically sick. She had attempted to go to work that morning, but as soon as Weaver saw her face, she told her to go home. “I’m fine,” Abby had told Weaver, straightening up and smiling slightly. Of course, she didn’t feel fine and she really should go home. “Come here,” Weaver had commanded, motioning Abby to come toward her. Abby reluctantly walked forward. Weaver placed her hand out, and made Abby bend down so she could feel her forehead. She furrowed her eyebrows. “Abby Lockhart, you are burning up. Go home.” “But…” “Now. The last thing we need is you making the other doctors sick. Don’t come back until that fever’s broken.” “Fine,” Abby had mumbled under her breath. She didn’t even take the time to change out of her scrubs, before she headed home.

Chapter 11 Weaver had been right; she did need to go home. Her head was pounding, her body ached, and she needed a nice hot shower. When she got home, she took a long shower, trying to erase everything away. But, she knew that it wouldn’t help. She had tried to erase everything away in the first place and now look where it had gotten her. After her shower, Abby wrapped herself in the towel and went into her room. She still felt horrible. Abby dropped her lotion from the table, so she bent down to pick it up. Her calendar was still laying on the floor. She picked it up and looked through it. She was now seven weeks along. Abby stopped short when she noticed the date of the next Tuesday. Lightly with her finger she traced over the date, May 15. Abby choked a sob. Next week was the anniversary of his death. She had known that it had been steadily approaching, but seeing it on the calendar and so close brought her to tears. What would he say if he saw her now? Would he forgive her for what she had done? Abby crawled into her bed and sobbed into her pillow. Tommy, she thought, I’m so sorry, so sorry. She didn’t know what to do. She just wanted Tommy back and for this to all go away. Abby finally fell asleep after her tears had worn her out. When Abby awoke, it was dark outside. She looked at the clock and it said that it was 9:30. She had slept the day away, but didn’t feel one bit better. Abby remained in her bed, because if she went downstairs and attempted to eat anything she may run into Luka or Susan. She didn’t want their questions, because she might say the wrong thing. All these lies were eating her up inside. They had worn her out so much that they had made her sick. Abby pulled herself out of the bed and combed her hands through her brown locks. She stood in silence not exactly knowing what she was going to do, but she needed to do something. She couldn’t live like this anymore. Outside of her room, she heard Luka walk down the hallway, open his door, and then shut it. Abby took a deep breath, before making her move into the hallway. She feared that Susan might walk up the stairs and see her. But then it hit her, Susan had to work the night shift. She wouldn’t be home for hours. Once Abby was in the hallway, she lingered in front of Luka’s door for minutes, which seemed like hours. She didn’t know what she was going to say or do. Before she could knock on the door, Luka opened it. He jolted, not knowing Abby was going to be standing there, but quickly changed his manner and gave her a small smile. “Hey Abby,” he said, gently. But then he noticed that her body was shaking. “You’re shivering,” he told her as he felt her forehead. “You are still burning up, Ab’s.” Abby shook his hand off of her head, as she rubbed her arms with her hands. She was so cold. “Luka,” she whispered. “What Abby?” “I’m scared, Luka. I’m just so scared.”

As I said at the start Abby had someone that she was really close to, that passed away and left her alot. Well thats who Tommy is! Chapter 12 “Abby,” Luka said, drawing her name out sweetly. “What’s scaring you?” He moved toward her slowly, because Abby was staring at him like a frightened animal. Abby’s eyes avoided Luka’s and he lightly touched her chin with his thumb and forced her to look at him. “What is it?” “I’m such a terrible person,” Abby sobbed. Luka pulled her into an embrace, but Abby pushed away. “Don’t touch me,” she whispered. “I don’t deserve to be hugged. I don’t deserve anything.” At this, Luka got really scared. He had never heard Abby talk like this before, not even after Tommy had died. “Abby,” Luka repeated her name. He took a hold of her arm and pulled her into his room and out of his doorway. She didn’t fight him, mainly because she was just too tired. “You need sleep,” he informed her. “I slept all day,” Abby told him. “Yeah, but you still have a fever. You need your rest, so you can get over this illness quickly,” Luka told her. He looked closely at her face; he was trying to see if he could figure out anything based on her face. “I guess,” Abby said half heartedly. Abby moved over toward Luka’s bed and took a seat. “Why don’t you lie down and sleep a little bit and I’ll make you some soup or something?” Luka offered, but Abby stood up at his suggestion. She shook her head. She was beginning to feel woozy. “I don’t think…” Abby didn’t have time to finish her sentence, because a huge wave of nausea hit her and she rushed to the bathroom with Luka following quickly behind her. As Abby heaved over the toilet, Luka pulled back her hair and rubbed her back in small even circles. Abby felt salty tears falling down her face when she finished. She sat back, and Luka handed her some tissue to wipe her mouth. “Thanks,” Abby said at a near whisper. She wiped her mouth and then leaned herself against the wall. When Luka saw her tears, he probed her again about what was the matter.

Chapter 13 “Abby, why are you crying?” Luka asked. “Is it Tommy?” Luka knew that the anniversary of his death was coming up quickly. He had been wondering how Abby was taking it. Abby nodded slightly. “Yes, all I can think is how much he would hate me,” she confessed. Luka looked at her in confusion. “Hate you? Tommy could never hate you, Abby.” “I don’t know. I. Just. Don’t. Know.” Abby pushed her brown locks back with shaky hands. “Abby, what is this all about? What’s going on?” Luka asked sternly. He was really getting concerned. Abby’s eyes fluttered shut. Her confession lay on her lips dying to get out, and before she could even convince herself not to speak, she blurted out the truth. “I slept with Jake,” Abby uttered, opening her eyes slowly afraid of what reaction she would get. Luka sat in front of Abby shocked. When he didn’t say anything, Abby began to cry. “See, I am terrible.” “When…?” Luka asked, still in shock. “Seven weeks ago, we got drunk, and I…” Abby couldn’t finish her sentence, because another wave of nausea hit her. She threw up into the toilet again, and Luka pulled her hair back. As she pulled back, Luka put his hand on her cheek. “Man, Abby, you are burning up. You need to go to the hospital.” Abby shook her head violently. “I can’t, I can’t,” Abby cried. “If I go, then they’ll all know, and I’m not ready for them to know. I’ll be fine.” “Abby, you aren’t fine,” Luka told her forcibly. “Now,” his voice softened, “they won’t know that you slept with Jake if you go to the hospital.” “No,” Abby whispered, and then she said just above a murmur, “I’m pregnant.” Luka had thought that he had been shocked before, but now he was floored. Abby was pregnant with Jake’s baby. And Jake was married to Kelly. This was a story for the soaps.

Chapter 14 “Oh,” was all Luka could muster, but Abby didn’t seem to notice. She sat quietly, her thoughts surrounding her. “And,” Luka finally began. “What does Jake say?” “He doesn’t know,” Abby told him. Abby began to stand up, because she felt like her nausea had passed. Luka stood up with her supporting her, because he noticed that her legs were slightly shaking. Abby grabbed a hold tightly to Luka’s arm and looked at him seriously in the eyes, “and you can’t tell him. You can’t tell him anything. I still don’t know what I am going to do.” “I’m not going to tell him anything,” Luka reassured her. “Come on, you need to lie down if you won’t let me take you to the hospital.” Luka led her into his room and helped her lie on the bed. When she hit the bed, she realized just how much her head was really pounding. Luka began to walk out of the room, but Abby turned to him. “What am I going to do?” Luka walked to the bed, and sat next to Abby. But the way she was laying, he couldn’t make out her face, so he lay down next to her so that their faces were only inches apart. “You tell Jake,” Luka told her simply. “That is if you want.” “I wish it was that simple,” Abby told him, and then she went into the details of the past seven weeks. She told him about the drinking, the waking up the next day, Jake forgetting everything, keeping it a secret, and then finding out she was pregnant. “Wait…” Luka said, stopping her in mid explanation. “Jake slept with you and he doesn’t remember? How can he not remember that? I mean, you are…” “Luka, stop,” Abby said clearly agitated. “Sorry,” Luka quickly amended. “I just don’t know what to do,” Abby confessed, as salty tears soaked into Luka’s sheets. Luka took her hand and squeezed it tightly. “Just go to sleep, Abby. You need to sleep. We’ll figure this out later. We will figure everything out, I promise.”
