Chapter 62 Just then, Neela walked into the room. She looked pepped up. Abby assumed that she must have performed some surgery or saw something interesting. “Oh, thank god,” Abby said walking over to Neela, “will you hold him for a minute so I can change?” “No,” Neela answered quickly. “Neela, please, it will just be a minute. I have got to get out of these scrubs.” Abby begged. “He won’t wake up. He’s a deep sleeper.” Abby quickly, but gently, pulled Luke off her and handed him over to Neela, before she could protest again. Neela held him awkwardly, but Luke continued to sleep. “You could let him rest on your chest then it’s easier to hold him,” Abby suggested. “No, he’s fine just like this, just go get dressed so you can take him back,” Neela told her, as she manoeuvred slightly so that the baby wasn’t hurting her arms. Abby quickly changed into her clothes as Neela eyed her ever growing belly. “I can’t believe you are having another one of these,” Neela told her. “Yeah, well, I wasn’t planning on having one so soon after Luke, but it happened, and I am happy about it,” Abby explained to Neela as she pulled the long sleeve shirt over her five month belly. The baby was due February 28, just a little over two months after Luke’s first birthday. Abby fussed her hair and then grabbed her purse and diaper bag. Then she walked over and took Luke from Neela. “Thanks.” A Little While Later“Hey,” Janet said as she walked into the hospital room where Abby and Luke sat in a chair in the corner of the room. “Hey Luke,” Janet said with a smile pulling Luke out of Abby’s arms. “He looks better, don’t you think? I think he has to have gained at least a few pounds since you last saw him,” Abby said as she stood up. “Well, he does look good, but let me take a look.” A little while later and after doing a few tests with Luke, Janet handed Luke back over to Abby. “I think we’re going to need to operate,” Janet told Abby.

Chapter 63 Abby clutched Luke closer to her chest and ran her fingers through his many curls. “When?” Abby asked. “Tomorrow,” Janet told her. “Tomorrow?” Abby said shockingly. “I thought that we were going to wait until he was at least one. Can’t we wait one more month?” Abby pleaded with Janet. Even though she was a doctor, she didn’t want her son to have to be opened up and operated on. “No, we can’t. Abby, I’ve warned you that this was probably going to happen soon. We’ve pushed it back as far as we can, but we’re going to have to operate.” Abby remained silent for a moment trying to process everything that was hitting her all at once. She really wished that Luka was there for support. He would be there in a few hours, but she needed him now. She wanted him there with them. Abby closed her eyes and rocked Luke back and forth. Then she opened them and nodded lightly. “Okay,” she whispered. “We’ll admit him tonight and prepare him for surgery. I’ll schedule an early time for tomorrow morning.” “Okay.” “Just let me take Luke, and get him ready,” Janet told her. “Can we wait until Luka gets here?” Abby questioned. Janet nodded. “Of course,” Janet told her. LaterAbby sat in the locker room waiting for Luka to get back. She had called him as soon as they had left Janet to tell him the news. He sounded about as happy as she felt about it. Now, she was just waiting for him to return. Luke was playing with a toy, as he sat on a blanket on the floor. He was a very contented baby, very easy going. He gave her hardly any trouble. That made her worry about the little one inside of her. Would he or she give her trouble since she had lucked out so much with Luke? However, this had been an easy pregnancy so far. The morning sickness had been short and she didn’t feel a bit tired. She was just emotional like she was with Luke. “Hey Ab,” Jake said as he walked into the locker room and took a seat next to Abby on the bench. “Hey Luke!” he said sweetly. Luke turned to him and smiled, but kept playing with his toy. “So, what are you still doing here? I thought you were off,” Jake asked Abby. “Um, we’re waiting for Luka, and then we have to admit Luke for the night,” Abby told him as she tried to keep her voice from shaking. “Why? How is Luke? Do they have to operate early?” Jake asked her sympathetically. At his sympathetic words, Abby began to cry. Tears cascaded down her face as she took a ragged breath. “Hey, hey, Abby, it’s okay. Luke is going to be okay.” “I know that,” Abby said as she nodded her head and began wiping off her tears. “I’m just…I don’t know,” she whispered. Then she looked at Jake in his eyes, her voice wavering lightly but completely serious. “I’m so sorry,” she told him. “I am just so sorry. I’m sorry for everything that I have ever done to you. I am sorry.” “Abby, what’s this all about?” Jake asked her, clearly confused at her apology. Abby glanced at Luke, but just shook her head. “Nothing, just feeling the need to apologize for anything I may have done to you,” she told him. “Oh Abby,” Jake said with a small laugh. “You scared me there for a moment.”

Chapter 64 Just then Luka walked in and Abby jumped up from the bench and rushed over to him. She pulled him into a tight hug. “Hey,” he whispered in her ear. Luke crawled over to his dad and mom. “Hey buddy,” he said as he bent down to Luke’s level and picked him up. “How’s daddy’s big boy been?” Luke giggled and burrowed his head into Luka’s shoulder. Abby ruffled Luke’s hair and smiled. “He’s been great, as usual,” Abby turned and looked at Jake, “bye Jake, thanks for the talk.” Luka, Abby, and Luke left the room and walked into the hallway. “So what was that between you and Jake?” Luka questioned. “Is that jealousy I hear?” Abby joked. When Luka rolled his eyes, Abby explained, “I just began crying a little bit, and he just happened to be there, no big. I’m already on emotional overload as it is.” “Yes you are. So when do we take Luke to Janet?” “Now,” Abby told him. “She wanted to take him earlier, but I wanted to wait until you were here.” “I’m glad you waited.” “Me too.” The Next DayAbby sat fidgeting nervously with her hands. Luka took one of her hands and held it with both of his. He brought it to his lips and kissed it sweetly. “He’s going to be fine,” he told her softly. Abby nodded, but didn’t speak. She just continued to bounce her legs up and down. “Abby…” “I’m fine.” “Abby,” Luka began again. Abby looked at him and gave him a weak smile. “I’m fine.” “Let’s go get something to eat,” Luka told her as he began to stand up, knowing that it would be better than sitting for hours not knowing anything. “I’m not hungry,” Abby told him. “Ab’s, you know it’s going to be a little while. Come with me to get something to eat. It will be better then fretting here quietly for a few hours.” Abby almost began to protest, but instead decided against it. It probably would be better then just sitting and waiting. And she had her pager. They could page her or Luka if they were needed. “Okay.” Some Hours LaterLuka and Abby sat again in the uncomfortable waiting room chairs. Abby’s head was resting on Luka’s shoulder. Luka’s arm was around her shoulder, and his other hand was resting on her swollen belly. Janet walked toward them and they both stood up. “How is he?” Abby blurted out, before Janet was all the way to them. “He’s doing great. He did very well,” Janet informed them. Both Abby and Luka let go of the breath neither had known they were holding. “That’s good, very good,” Abby said smiling. “Very good,” Luka agreed. “Can we go see him?” “Sure,” Janet told them. “He’ll have to stay for a few days, and it’ll probably take about a month before he is completely back to his normal self.” “But he’s okay?” Abby asked again. “Yes, he’s okay.”

Chapter 65 Abby folded a pile of onesies as Susan placed a package of diapers under the changing table in the new nursery. Susan had come over to help a restless Abby finish up the few final touches before the baby arrived. Abby had been stuck at home for a few days on bed rest and she had called up Susan begging for some company other than her fourteen month old son. Luka had been working extra hard the past week so that when the baby came he could have a little while off. So Abby had been bed ridden with no one for company but Luke. And she didn’t even have him all of the time, Luka took him to daycare most of the time, because he didn’t think that Abby should be left alone with a fourteen month old and stuck in bed. “I am so ready for the shy one to come on,” Abby told Susan. She and Luka had been calling the new baby ‘shy one’ because whenever they did a sonogram, the baby was turned just the right way so that they couldn’t tell whether it was a boy or a girl. That really bothered Abby because she wanted to decorate the nursery accordingly. But since they didn’t know the sex of the baby, Abby and Luka had decorated the baby’s room with teddy bears. It was a good neutral pattern. An ‘L’ adorned the outside of the room, because they had decided that they wanted him or her to have a name that started with an “L” like Luke’s. “I know you are,” Susan told her. Susan looked out the window and at the storm that was raging outside. “Wow, its bad out there.” “Yeah, it is,” Abby sighed in frustration, “I’m so sick of being stuck in here!” Abby threw her hands up and sat back on her pillows. “Mama! Mama! Ready get up!” Luke called from his room. “I got him!” Luka called from the kitchen where he was making Abby lunch. Abby popped up and her eyes widened, “Oh god!”

Chapter 66 “What, Abby, are you okay?” Susan asked as she rushed to Abby’s side. “What’s the matter?” “My water just broke!” Abby told her. “Oh, oh,” Susan said as she hurried to the door and down to Luka. “What?” Luka asked when he saw Susan when he was half way up the stairs on his way to Luke’s room. “Her water broke,” Susan told him. “What?!” Luka rushed up the stairs to Abby. “I’ll go check on Luke,” Susan told him, as Luka went into his room. “Abby,” he said taking a seat next to her on the bed. Abby was in mid contraction and she squeezed his hand. “It’s coming fast,” Abby said nervously. “I don’t think we’ll make it to the hospital in time with this weather.” Abby squeezed his hand yet again as another contraction hit her hard and un-expectantly. “Um, Susan, we need you in here! The baby’s coming fast!” Luka called to Susan. He didn’t want Abby to know how anxious he felt about all of this. He could already tell that she was worried enough as it was, so the last thing she needed was to know how nervous he was. “What should I do with Luke?” Susan called from Luke’s room. “Put up the gate at his door, close the bathroom door, and put in a movie,” Abby called. “He’ll stay content. He’s fine on his own. Just get in here fast!” Another contraction hit and she bit the inside of her lip to keep from screaming. “I don’t like this,” she confessed to Luka. “I want to have the baby in a hospital, with drugs. I need drugs.” “No you don’t,” Luka told her, as he kissed her forehead. “You can do this.” Susan walked into the room, with the phone in her hand. “I called the hospital, an ambulance will be here soon.” “Good, but this baby’s coming now,” Abby told her. “The shy one is ready to greet the world.” Susan nodded and got into place. She realized that she was going to have to be the one to deliver the newest Kovac. “Okay, Abby,” she told her moments later, “it’s time to push.” Abby nodded and began to push. She gripped Luka’s hands with both of hers as he sat behind her, supporting her. “You’re doing good,” he whispered in his ear. “The head is out, just one more push Ab,” Susan coached her. Abby took a deep breath and began to push again. “Good job, it’s out, and it’s a girl!” Susan told them putting the little pink girl up for them to see. “A girl,” Luka said as a proud father and as he kissed Abby’s cheek. “Yes, a girl,” Abby agreed. Just then they heard a knock on the door. “That would be the ambulance,” Luka said to no one in particular. “I’ll be right back.”

Well this is the last chapter to this story!! I am planning a sequel though!! Chapter 67 At the Hospital After checking over the baby, Janet handed the pink bundle over to Abby. “Susan, good job,” Janet told her. “The baby and the mother are completely healthy.” “Thanks,” she said as she smiled. Luka took a seat next to Abby on the bed. He was holding Luke and pointed to the small baby in Abby’s hand. Luke scrunched up his nose and then turned to his father for an explanation. “Luke that’s your new baby sister,” Luka told Luke. “Mama baby?” He questioned. Luka nodded and chuckled lightly. “Yes, mama’s baby,” he told him. “Mama, daddy, and Luke’s baby.” “My baby?” Luke asked as he looked back over at the little baby and pointed at himself. “Yes, Luke’s baby.” Abby told him with a wink. “So,” Susan began, giving an apology smile for interrupting their family moment, “what are you going to name her.” “Well,” Luka said. “We’ve decided on the name Lexy.” “Oh you guys, that is so sweet,” Susan said. “Thank you,” Luka told her. “Daddy, take Lexy,” Abby insisted, knowing that Luka hadn’t had a chance to hold his little girl yet because of all of the drama earlier. Luka placed Luke on the bed next to Abby and held his baby girl in his arms. Abby pulled Luke into her lap and kissed him sweetly on the cheek. “Now we’re complete,” Abby told him. “We’ve got one of each. A girl and a boy.” “Yep,” Luka agreed, cooing to his new little one. “We’re one big happy family.” THE END
