Chapter 15 Luka had finally gotten to sleep. Abby had fallen to sleep moments after her confession, but had woken up only twenty minutes later. After she had woken up, Luka had made her eat some soup and drink plenty of liquids so that she wouldn’t get dehydrated. Then she finally got to sleep again, and Luka had watched over her making sure her fever didn’t get too high. He knew that fevers could be dangerous to a baby if it got too high. When he was convinced that some sleep just might break the fever, Luka finally drifted to sleep himself. Not too long later, Abby’s body began to turn fitfully in her sleep. Luka woke up suddenly. He sat up and reached over to touch her forehead. His eyes widened as he realized she was burning up. He pulled the ear thermometer off of his bedside table and stuck it gently in her ear, not wanting to wake her up. When the thermometer beeped, he pulled it out and looked at it in alarm. 102.9. Nearly 103. All bets were off now; Abby had to go to the hospital. Luka climbed out of the bed and pulled Abby into his arms gently. She murmured something incoherent, and Luka gently pushed her hair off of her face. He walked slowly, trying not to wake her. It didn’t even occur to him that he was still in his pyjamas. He just knew that he needed to get her to Weaver or Coburn, someone. When Luka reached the steps, he didn’t want to wake up Abby by turning off the light, but he had to so he could keep from falling. However, before he could turn on the light, the light flickered on. Luka adjusted his eyes to the light and looked down to see Susan entering the house. “Luka?” Susan questioned. “What are you doing?” Susan was clearly confused with Luka holding Abby at the top of the stairs. “She’s burning up. Her fever is nearly 103. I’m taking her to the hospital.” Luka explained as he walked down the stairs slowly. “Oh, I…I’ll drive you, and you can sit in the back with Abby.” Susan told him, making a quick look over his flannel pants and white tee shirt, but decided not to point it out. Luka had other things on his mind. “Thanks,” Luka told her.

Chapter 16 When they reached County, Luka carried Abby into the hospital with Susan following closely behind. “What is going on here?” Weaver asked as she saw Luka, Abby, and Susan steadily approaching. “She’s running a high temperature,” Luka told her. Then Luka looked down at Abby and was sorry truly sorry for what he was about to do, but a temperature over 101 could be dangerous for the baby, and her temperature was 2 degrees over that. He had to do what he had to do. He wished that Susan wasn’t standing right there, and that he could only tell Weaver. Then maybe he would be able to keep it somewhat a secret for the time being. “Okay, bring her over here,” Weaver began instructing, pointing to an empty room. “Wait,” Luka told her. “There is something you need to know.” Luka stood quietly for a moment, holding Abby protectively to his chest. “Well, what is it?” Weaver asked impatiently. Luka took a deep breath and whispered softly. “She’s pregnant.” It's short so I'll have another one later!!

Chapter 17 Luka lay Abby gently down on the hospital bed, hoping that she would sleep for a few moments longer. Weaver had stood shocked for only a moment after hearing the news, but then moved quickly into action. They needed to break that fever. She would have to process the fact that Abby was pregnant later, after she got Abby’s fever down. “Alright, Luka, how far along is she?” Weaver asked Luka. “Um,” Luka said, thinking back to Abby’s confession, “she’s about seven weeks.” “Okay, you need to go and get changed. I can’t have my intern walking around the hospital in his pjs.” Abby began to stir awake. Luka began to protest, but Haleh stopped him. “I’ve got Abby. You go change, and you can check on her later.” Luka reluctantly obeyed as Susan followed him closely behind. “What…” Abby murmured as she tried to sit up. Her head was pounding, and her body was shaking. Weaver sat down next to her and pushed her back gently. “Shh, Abby,” she stated calmly. “You’re at the hospital. You’re fever is a little high, and we need to get it down. A high fever isn’t good for the baby.” Abby’s eyes shot open, but they quickly softened and filled with tears. Abby blinked them back and laid her head back on the bed. Her secret was no longer a secret. Everyone would know now. “So, you know?” She questioned, just above a whisper. “Yes,” Kerry told her. “Makes a lot of sense now. I should have figured it out sooner.” “Do…do you think my baby will be okay?” Kerry nodded. “We’ll do everything we can for you and the baby, I promise.”

Chapter 18 In the Locker RoomLuka walked into the locker room. His head was swarming with his own thoughts. He barely registered that Susan was following him. He was unsure of how he was going to fix things now. Everyone would know that Abby was pregnant by the end of the day (if not within the hour). A nurse would surely find out, and the news would quickly spread. So much for not telling anyone. Luka opened his locker and was relieved that he had kept an extra pair of clothes inside, just in case. He pulled them out of the locker and began to change. That is when Susan finally decided to talk. “I didn’t know that Abby was seeing anyone,” Susan pondered aloud. “I thought she was still pining over Tommy.” Luka pulled his shirt over his head. “Yeah, well, I think she still is. I think that maybe she just needed someone for comfort, or something,” smooth Luka that was pathetic. “Oh, Luka, don’t talk that way about yourself,” Susan told him, “I’m sure you mean more than that to Abby.” Luka looked up at Susan and pinched his lips together in confusion. “I mean…I had no idea you and her had hooked up, but it makes sense. And seven weeks…wasn’t that about when you moved in?” Luka stood stunned. Susan thought that he was the baby’s father. Now wasn’t that a twist. “Luka?” Susan asked, trying to pull Luka out of his thoughts. “Was it seven weeks ago?” “Hm?” Luka questioned trying to process her question. “Yeah, seven weeks ago.” “So,” Susan continued. “Was this like a one time deal, or are you and Abby like a couple?” Luka didn’t know what to say. He knew that he should tell her right then and there that he was not the baby’s father. However, that would lead to more questions. Of course, he could lie. Neither was the easy way out. Luckily, Neela burst into the locker room, interrupting their conversation.

Thanks Guys!! Chapter 19 “Hey, why are you guys here? There isn’t like some major surgery I’m missing out on, am I?” Luka darted his eyes to Susan, hoping that she wasn’t going to share her thoughts on Abby. He hadn’t had time to tell Susan not to tell anyone, yet. “Oh, we brought Abby in. She was running a pretty high fever,” Susan told her. Luka breathed a sigh of relief. She didn’t mention the baby. But then, Susan began speaking again before Luka could stop her, “And I just found out that Abby…” “Is getting two days off next week because of the anniversary of Tommy’s death,” Luka interrupted lamely. Neela rolled her eyes. “That’s not news; we were all there when Weaver gave Abby those days off. Come on now, spill what’s up with Abby.” Susan looked at Luka apologetically. She knew that he hadn’t wanted her to tell, but now it was too late. Luka just shook his head, but then nodded, telling her to go on with it. It wasn’t like Neela wasn’t going to find out soon enough. “Well?” “Abby’s pregnant and it’s Luka’s!” Susan spilled. Luka’s eyes opened. He had never said exactly that the baby was his. He just hadn’t denied it. He had only thought that she was going to tell Neela that Abby was pregnant. He didn’t think that she was going to add something about him. “You knocked up Abby?” “Um,” Luka mumbled, filling pushed back into a corner. “Look, Abby really should explain everything to you guys. She’s really confused right now, and needs some support. But, let’s not tell everyone about the baby, okay?” “Why not? The nurses will have it spread around the hospital in an hour flat.” “I know, I know,” Luka went on, “but let’s try to keep it a secret for a little bit. Please? Do it for Abby.”

Chapter 20 The Next MorningLuka stood outside of Abby’s room, unsure of what exactly he was doing. He wanted to go inside and check on her, but at the same time he didn’t know how he was going to tell her what they all assumed. However, he knew that he had done nothing to keep them from assuming that he was the father. It made since that they would assume it was him. Abby and he had been in a relationship before Tommy, and he did still love her. Also, Abby wasn’t one to have random one night stands. He couldn’t understand why he hadn’t told them that he wasn’t the father outright. Sure, he hadn’t said he was, but he hadn’t said he wasn’t either. He could say that is was because he wanted to give Abby more time to sort through what she wanted to say, without having to worry about the others asking her question. But, that really wasn’t a good enough excuse, because now he would have to explain that he wasn’t the father and why he hadn’t said anything before. Unless…. “Kovac,” Weaver said snapping Luka out of his thoughts. “Abby’s fever has broken. She’s awake. You should go in and see her.” “Is the baby alright?” Luka asked Kerry. “I’m not sure,” she confessed, “but Janet is coming in a few minutes to check her out. I just had to break that fever first. It’s a good thing you brought her in last night.” “Okay,” Luka responded. He nodded lightly and then walked into Abby’s room. She looked so much better than she had just mere hours ago. She was sitting up eating some jello. “Hey, Ab.” Abby smiled when she saw Luka. “Hey Luka,” she said back. Luka walked up to her bed and sat down next to her bed. “So, how do you feel?” “Much better, but at the same time…” Abby faded. She put down her jello and sighed deeply. “Upset that everyone knows so quickly?” Luka filled in for her. Abby nodded slowly. “I just wanted more time to sort everything out, you know? I just still don’t know how I feel about all of this, and now everyone knows. Well, maybe not everyone, but I’m sure Susan has told Neela and the nurses have told others. And now Kerry knows and Janet. I haven’t even had time to think about how I’m going to explain this to them, especially Jake. What am I going to tell him? And…well, my fever was so high. What if there isn’t even a baby anymore? I really don’t know how I feel about that…” Abby took a deep breath and wiped away stray tear. “I don’t think I like that,” she said at a whisper.

Chapter 21 Luka took her hand in his and squeezed it sweetly, “I’m sure the baby’s fine.” Abby looked up and tried to get the tears to go away. She closed her eyes and combed her hand through her hair. “Yeah,” she whispered, “yeah. But maybe…” “Maybe what Abby?” “It’s my fault,” Abby told him, fear forming in her eyes. “What is your fault?” Luka asked her. “If anything happens to the baby. I’ve been tangled in lies…maybe it’s just…” “No, Abby, stop thinking about it. The baby will be fine, and then we will figure out what we are going to do and what we are going to tell the others.” “Okay,” Abby whispered. Janet walked in. “Hey Abby,” she said sympathetically, as if she was just her patient and not an intern. “I’m just going to check a few things okay? See how the baby’s doing.” Abby bit her bottom lip, “okay.” Abby grabbed a tight hold of Luka’s hand. Janet took notice of this, but didn’t say anything. “We’re going to lift up your gown and listen to the baby’s heart beat,” Janet informed her. She put the cool gel on Abby’s stomach and felt for a heart beat. It seemed like several moments and there was still no heart beat. Abby’s heart fell, but instead of saying anything she just squeezed Luka’s hand even stronger and watched as Janet continued to look for a heart beat. Finally, a wonderful quick little beat sounded and Abby let out a sigh of relief. “There he or she is,” Coburn said with a smile. “It was hiding.” “Thank god,” Abby murmured. “I was so scared.” Coburn did a few more things to check on her and the baby, and she concluded that everything seemed okay. She just told Abby that they would keep a close eye on the baby and make sure that he or she remained healthy.
