Chapter 22 When Janet left the room, Abby began to lightly cry. Luka sat up alarmed. He took her chin in his hand and looked at her in the eyes. “Hey, hey Ab,” he said soothingly. “What’s the matter?” “I’m just relieved,” Abby told him. “I was so worried. I mean it’s not my baby’s fault for my and Jake’s mistake. And, I’m just so…relieved.” Luka smiled. “Good, that’s good.” “Yes. Now, I just have to figure out what I’m going to tell everyone. I mean, who am I going to tell them is the father?” Luka sat up, “Yeah about that…” “Hey guys,” Susan said, breaking their conversation. “I brought you a change of clothes, Abby. Kerry says we can take you home soon.” “Thanks,” Abby said with a small smile. She was unsure about how she felt about Susan knowing her little secret and how she was going to react to it. Well, it really didn’t matter anymore. She was sure the whole hospital knew by now. So much for trying to sort through everything. At least now, she knew that her baby was okay. And with that knowledge, she would be able to figure out everything. At least, no matter what happened, she would have her baby. “Well,” Susan said, noting their odd behaviour. Luka hadn’t seemed himself since he brought Abby to the hospital, and now Abby had an odd look on her face. Perhaps they were just relieved that the baby was okay, but were discussing some things when she barged in the room. So, she laid Abby’s clothes on a side table, and began to head toward the door wanting to give them time to talk about everything. “I’m going to go, I’ll be back in a bit when my shift’s over and we’ll take you home and eat ice cream.” “Sounds good.” Susan headed out the door, but before she left she turned back around. “I’m glad the baby is okay and I think it’s so great that you guys are having a baby.” And with that she walked away. Luka sat shocked and Abby turned to him and looked at him with curious eyes. “You guys?” Abby asked

Chapter 23 “Um…” Luka sat dumbfounded. He hadn’t expected Susan to let it slip that she thought he was the father. Abby sat up in her bed and laughed weakly. “Did I just hear her right?” She questioned. “You guys?? Luka what did you tell her?” “I..I didn’t tell her anything, she just assumed…” Luka feebly explained. “And what did you say when she assumed this?” Abby asked him sharply. “I, um, I didn’t say anything.” “What!?” Abby screeched. Abby pushed him off of her bed and let out a frustrated sigh. “Do you have ANY idea what you’ve done? There is no doubt that she’s told everyone..Neela, Carter, who would have told everybody…” “Actually, she’s just told Neela…” “Oh great, that’s just great!” Abby yelled. “It’s not like I didn’t have enough to figure out, but now I have to figure out how to fix this mess too.” “Look,” Luka began, explaining. “I didn’t mean to let it get this far, I just thought…” Abby looked at him skeptically, “okay I wasn’t thinking. But, at first I was going to tell Susan that I wasn’t the father…but then, I thought, well, this could solve all our problems.” Abby began to laugh incredulously. “Our problems? Luka this is not our problem…this is my problem! I’m sorry that I dragged you into all of this, but I didn’t mean for you to do this!” “Well, I did,” Luka responded, after calming himself down. “Now just listen to me for a moment.” Abby crossed her arms across her chest, and looked at him defiantly. “Thank you,” he said snappily. “Now,” he began again, “look, what if we did tell everyone I was the father. Then, there wouldn’t be any questions about the father and what happened. So many people will believe that you and I hooked up. We could settle everything else out, but at least then….” “Luka,” Abby said, “thank you for wanting to help, but do you understand what you are really offering? The baby isn’t going to be in my stomach forever. It will come out and then it’s here forever. It’s a lifetime commitment. You can’t possibly be willing to do something like that, and you shouldn’t have to. It’s not your baby; you have no responsibility to it.”

Chapter 24 Luka sat quietly for a moment, taking all of this in. It was true. He really hadn’t thought about all of that. Babies took time, money, and energy. Maybe he really should have thought more about it all. But when he looked into Abby’s eyes, he knew that he could love her baby as his own, and all that other stuff didn’t matter. “Well,” he finally said, after many moments of silence, “I know I don’t, but I want to Abby. We don’t have to be a couple. We can just be friends raising a baby.” “I..I don’t know,” Abby told him. “It just seems like that’s a big thing to offer. Plus, I still don’t know how I feel about not telling Jake. He is the baby’s father. And rightfully, he should know.” Luka nodded slightly. “Yes,” he replied, “but there’s one problem with that.” “What?” “Jake has no idea what happened that night, so how are you going to tell him?” Abby shrugged her shoulders. “I have absolutely no idea.” “Alright, well I’ll tell you what, think about it and if you decide to tell Jake, great, I’ll support you. But if it doesn’t work out, keep my idea as a plan b.” “Abby,” Jake said frantically, barging into Abby’s room. “I just heard!” He rushed over to her bed and looked her over. “Heard?” Abby asked alarmed, “Heard what?” “That you are sick!” Abby sighed in relief. “I’m so sorry I didn’t come sooner.” “It’s okay. I was just laying here, nothing much you could have done.” Abby told him. “Actually, I’m about to go home. Kerry says I’m all set to go.” Jake took her into a tight embrace. “Good, I’m glad you’re okay. I-well- I have to go, work and all, I’ll come over tonight and check on you?” Jake asked, making sure that it was okay. He and Abby had not been as close as they used to be for some time. She always seemed to be avoiding him. “Well,” Abby began, “actually, I’ll probably be resting, but maybe tomorrow.” Abby was trying to push back the inevitable as much as possible. She knew that she needed to tell him the truth, but she wasn’t ready to yet. She needed to figure out how she was going to tell him. “Oh, okay,” Jake stated, trying to keep Abby from telling that he was slightly hurt. He was tired of his friend pushing him away. What was bothering her so much? He wondered if something was going on between Abby and Luka, and if she was too afraid to tell him quite yet. “Feel better.” Jake patted her on the arm, and then left the room. “What have I gotten myself into?” Abby sighed. “Abby, you don’t have to do this to yourself. You and Jake made a mistake and you tried to hide it. That doesn’t make you a terrible person. Everybody makes mistakes.” “Yes, but not everyone gets pregnant and then has to tell their friend that they are pregnant with his baby, which…by the way, he doesn’t even remember conceiving!” “Yeah, well, just remember what I said about plan b.” “I do. I’ll think about it. I just…well, it doesn’t seem right.”

Chapter 25 Three Days LaterAbby had been successfully avoiding everyone for almost three days straight, which was by no means any easy task. She had pulled the sick/dead friend card several times, admitting that she just needed time. And of course, this was not a lie. She was not ready yet to talk to them and have them ask all of their questions. She wouldn’t know how to answer those questions that were sure to be asked. Tomorrow marked the one day anniversary of Tommy’s death, and she felt completely overwhelmed with that fact. How she felt about it, she was unsure. It was a kind of empty feeling, but not nearly as deep a hole she felt last year when she lost him. Also, she had the baby overshadowing how she might have been feeling this day. But with these two things going on, everyone seemed to give her some space. Today, however, she would not be taking her space. She had finally convinced herself to go and tell Jake the truth. She had spent hours practicing what she was going to say in front of the mirror making sure every inflection was just right and that every pause was perfect. Although Weaver had told Abby not to return for another three days, Abby had to go to the hospital this very moment and tell Jake the truth. If she didn’t go now, then she knew that she may never tell him. She couldn’t allow herself to think about what she was doing. “Jake, um, you remember that night you and I got drunk after you had that fight with Kelly? Well, you see, something did happen. I well, you and I… No that isn’t right!” Abby sighed as she sat in the car in front of the hospital practicing. She couldn’t practice anymore, she just needed to go in that hospital and tell Jake the truth. That’s all she needed to do. But she just sat in the car, unwilling to move. “Come on, Abby, just go in there. Just do it.” She commanded herself. Finally, she pulled herself out of the car and walked into the hospital. Abby’s eyes darted in every direction. She couldn’t dare let Weaver spot her there, or she would be sent out of the hospital in five seconds flat. She understood where Kerry was coming from. She was worried about Abby’s reaction to the anniversary and how it might affect the patients of the hospital. If she was in the same position, she probably wouldn’t want her to work either.

Chapter 26 Abby snuck into the hospital and walked to the cafeteria. She knew that it was lunch time, and she had the best chance of finding Jake there. She wished that he would be in the locker room, alone, then everything would be easier But then she changed her mine, maybe in a room full of people would be better. Maybe he couldn’t, or wouldn’t, yell at her there. Then she saw them. Kelly and Jake. She hadn’t accounted the fact that Kelly might be with Jake. However, that wasn’t going to stop her. She would just go and say that she needed to talk to Jake. Kelly didn’t hate her anymore (but she would soon), so she might just understand. Abby began to walk toward the table, but she stopped abruptly as Jake and Kelly started to laugh. She couldn’t see Jake’s face, but she saw Kelly’s. Her face was filled with love. Her eyes were bright and happy. Jake sweetly brushed a hair out of Kelly’s face, and stole a quick kiss. Abby quickly turned around and headed out of the cafeteria. That was it. She couldn’t tell him. She couldn’t break their marriage up. Maybe it wasn’t the right thing, maybe Jake should know the truth, but that didn’t matter anymore. The thought had hit her when she had stood their watching Jake and Kelly that it wouldn’t just be her that would break up their marriage, it would be the baby’s too. Perhaps they would stay together, but Abby doubted it. She didn’t want her baby to be the cause of a breakup, because it wasn’t the baby’s fault. She had to protect her baby from the mess she had made, and she had to protect Jake and Kelly. Maybe it wasn’t the ‘right’ thing to do, but it was what she was going to do. So she made up her own plan. She made up a plan C. When she reached the house, Abby ran up the stairs, not even bothering to say hi to Susan or Carter who were in the living room. In her room, she began formulating her plan. She still had a little bit of money left over from Tommy. So, she could leave, and get a new internship at another hospital. She wasn’t sure what she was going to tell Weaver yet, but she would figure that out. Then she would have the baby there and Jake would never have to know and he and Kelly could live happily ever after and all that jazz. “Abby?” Luka asked poking his head into her room. Abby turned around. He was probably coming to see what had happened. That morning she had told him that she was ready to tell Jake. Luka had asked her if she wanted him to go with her, but she had told him no. She had wanted to do it alone. “Yes,” she lightly responded. “So?” Luka questioned, searching Abby’s brown eyes for an answer. Abby sighed. “I didn’t tell him. I just couldn’t do it,” she explained weakly. “I understand. What are you going to do now?”

Chapter 27 “Well,” Abby began, “I think I’m going to leave, take the little that is left from Tommy’s inheritance and go raise the baby somewhere else.” Luka stood in front of her shocked. “What? Abby…” “No,” Abby interrupted. “I’ve thought about it, and this is what I’m going to do. It’s the best thing.” “Abby, where would you go?” “I don’t know,” Abby said dejectedly, but she quickly put on a small smile, “But I’ll figure it out.” “I don’t like this Abby. You’d be leaving everyone. You would have to start all over…” “Exactly, that’s the point,” Abby interrupted again. “What about plan b?” Luka asked her. Abby shook her head slightly. “No, no, I can’t ask you to do that for me. It’s a big favour...a HUGE favour. I can’t ask that of you.” “You aren’t asking. I’m offering. Plus, I want to.” “Luka have you even really thought about what being a father entails? If you were to do this, you would have to do it full on. And I can’t ask that of you. It has too many expectations behind it. Think about that.” “I have thought about it, Abby. I’ve thought about it since the day you told me you were pregnant.” Luka told her. Abby looked up at him, surprise in her eyes. “You have?” Abby said just barely above a whisper. “I have.” Luka restated. Abby remained quiet, as she remained in her thoughts. Could they really pull this off? It would be much better than leaving everyone behind and starting over again. “Are you sure?” Abby asked him firmly. “And I mean, really sure? Because there is no turning back from this.” “I’m sure.” After a few moments, Abby said with a small smile, “Okay, then, plan b it is.”
