Chapter 33 If Abby had thought she felt tired yesterday, she was mistaken. Today had been even worse. She again had spent the entire night in the bathroom. Then to top it off, she had an extremely early shift and remembered the whole ‘no caffeine’ rule. She had never worked without her coffee. But now she had gone with out caffeine for two days straight and it was truly wearing on her. Not to mention how sore her breasts were. She never realized how much they bumped into things until they were tender to the touch. Now she was home from her long day. All she wanted was a nice long hot shower and then to go to sleep for as long as she possibly could before the morning sickness kicked in. “Hey, dinner in 30 minutes?” Susan asked as Abby entered the house. Dammit, Abby paused. She had completely forgotten about her promise to eat with Susan, Carter, Neela, and Luka for Susan’s birthday dinner. “Yeah,” Abby told her with a false smile. “I’ll be back in a minute.” Abby rushed upstairs and collapsed on her bed. But then, regretfully, she stood up. She didn’t have time to relish those thirty minutes. She had to clean up. It was times like these that Abby wondered what she had gotten herself into. One Hour LaterAbby pushed the food around on her plate. It looked edible (Carter had ordered out), but she wasn’t hungry. Luka sat beside her, Neela sat at the head of the table, and Susan and Carter sat across from her. She was trying to keep up appearances. She didn’t want them knowing how truly tired she was. Especially not Luka. The last thing she needed was for him to tell Weaver and then she’d be stuck in triage for life. “So, what are you going to do about the baby’s name?” Susan asked. Abby had been so enraptured in her thoughts that when Susan spoke she jumped slightly. “Um, what do you mean? We don’t even know if it’s a girl or a boy. Names come later,” Abby told her as she picked at her green beans with her fork. If she moved her food around enough, perhaps they wouldn’t catch on that she wasn’t eating anything. “No, not the first name,” Susan said with a giggle. Of course she knew that Abby probably hadn’t begun working on baby names. “I mean the last name.” “It’ll be Lockhart,” Abby said abruptly. “That’s my last name, so it will be my baby’s last name.”

I'm wondering where this is going. I hope Jake will know the truth soon or later, in the best way possible. I guess it would be better for everyone. Update soon, I can't wait to know what's going to happen!

Thanks guys!! Chapter 34 “What do you think about that Luka?” Carter asked, breaking into the conversation. Luka looked up, putting down his full fork of beans and potatoes. “Uh, oh, well I mean…” Luka paused. “Yeah, of course the baby’s last name will be Lockhart.” “You really don’t mind that?” Neela questioned. “It’s your baby too.” “I know that, but,” Luka terribly began to explain. “I mean, if Susan and I were going to have a baby, I’d want it to have my last name,” Carter told everyone. “Yes, well Luka and I are having a baby. And you and Susan are couple. Luka and I are not. I mean…”Abby huffed. “Look, we really haven’t discussed all this yet,” Luka began explaining to the others. He was just now noticing the circles under Abby’s eyes and how truly exhausted she looked. “So, let’s not discuss this right now. Let’s just talk about you, Susan. You are the birthday girl.” Abby glanced over at Luka and gave him an appreciative smile. Later that NightAbby sat curled up beside the toilet. She hadn’t been able to sleep at all since the dinner had ended. She had taken a long shower, changed into her pyjamas, and got straight into her bed, but the morning sickness had taken over right then. After throwing up for several minutes, she had tried to sleep, but it hit her again. Again she tried to go to sleep, and she couldn’t. So she turned and turned in her bed, until sleep finally overtook her body an hour later. However, she only slept for ten minutes, because she was sick again. Now she just sat there waiting for the morning sickness to take over her body again. Who even named it that in the first place? Her sickness was not just in the morning.

Thanks guys!! And thanks Martineke I fixed it!! Chapter 35 The door creaked open, and Abby’s eyes popped up anxious to see who was coming into the bathroom. She sighed. It was only Luka. “Hey,” he said at a whisper. “I brought you some tea,” he showed her a mug steaming hot. “I heard it helps.” “Thank you,” Abby told him as she moved her legs down and took the warm mug from Luka’s hands. “Did I wake you up? I’m sorry if I did.” “No, you didn’t. Plus, isn’t that part of the daddy package? I stay up with you? Help you when you’re sick?” Luka asked taking a seat next to Abby who was slowly sipping her tea. “Yeah, but no one’s watching. You don’t have to help me out. I’m just fine.” Abby told him. Luka scoffed. “You’re fine?” Abby nodded. “Abby, have you gotten any sleep tonight?” Luka questioned her. “Well, not exactly. But, we’re doctors. It’s not like we really get that much sleep.” “Uh huh, well, as doctors we are supposed to enjoy the precious hours of sleep we get.” “I know that, Luka. But right now, I can’t sleep and I have to be at work in…” Abby looked at her watch, “Four hours. I have an early shift.” “No you don’t, I’m taking over your shift. I don’t have to be in until 10. You can go in then,” Luka told Abby. “No. I’m not going to be a charity case. I can work when I’m supposed to work.” “Abby, stop. I know you are prideful, but you are wearing yourself down and you still have seven months to go. We’ll talk to Kerry…” “If anyone’s going to talk to Kerry, I will.” “Abby, we made a pact remember? I’m the father; I’m supposed to help you with all these things. That is part of the package,” Luka explained. “But no one is watching, it’s okay, really….” “No,” Luka interrupted. “No more playing. I’m not playing daddy. As far as everything is concerned, I am daddy. I am going to raise that baby as if it were mine, okay? And I’m going to start right now.” “But Luka…” “And you can name it whatever you want, I don’t care… It can have your last name. But, I’m going to keep him or her and its mother safe, okay?” Abby smiled and laughed slightly. “Okay.” “Oh, whatever,” Luka laughed. “But I’m daddy. And you are going to go to sleep and not wake up until 9 o’clock. We’ll talk with Kerry later, okay?” “Okay.” Abby said, as Luka stood up. He helped Abby pull herself up, also. Then Abby combed through her hair with her fingers. “I think I can sleep now.” She smiled and then headed toward the door. “And Luka?” “Yeah.” “Thanks.”

Chapter 36 Two Months LaterAbby had officially made it to her second trimester, and life was suddenly a little easier in some aspects. There was no more morning sickness and she had no more aversions to the smells of certain foods. However, other things were changing. Her body for one. Little Lockhart (which she referred to him or her) was growing and would be due December 15, just ten days before Christmas. It would be the best Christmas present ever. A small bump was forming and none of her pants would quite fit her anymore. Not even her ‘fat’ pants. Luckily, she was a Doctor. Scrubs were her new best friend. They kept her small bump hidden. That kept some of the questions away. Weaver, Luka, and she had worked out a different work schedule. Her hours had slightly (just slightly) been cut back, but only because Luka had offered to take her slack. She was still unsure how she felt about that. It was hard for her to let Luka take all this on. She knew he was dad. He was, really. But, some part of her had a hard time really believing it. He had been there for every doctor’s appointment. He had kept a hold of every sonogram, showing them off to everyone, even patients who he didn’t even know. So why, when everyone else was so sure that he was going to be the best father, could she not? Today she and Luka had an appointment with Janet for a check up and to possibly find out the sex of the baby. The thoughts of it being a girl or a boy excited her. It meant that she could begin planning other things, like the way the crib would be set up and what type of clothes she could buy for him or her. She really didn’t care either way. As a young girl, she had always wanted a little girl to dress up and fix her hair. And as a young girl, she had had her girl. But that girl was not hers, not really. She now belonged to someone else. Abby knew then that it had been the right thing to do. She had to do the motherly thing. Now it was different. Now she didn’t care either way. Now she was a grown woman. A woman who was prepared to take care of her baby and that feeling alone was a great one.

Chapter 37 Oddly enough, Abby’s relationship with Jake had gotten back to normal. At times she still had that pang of guilt racing through her veins when she thought of the truth, but she just pushed them to the back of her mind. She wanted…wait no, make that needed, Jake. He was in every essence her best friend. And she would keep it that way no matter how hard sometimes it was to keep him from the truth. She just kept telling herself that she, Abby Lockhart, was doing the best that she could. Of course, no one knew that she went to confession almost every week. Admitting her lies to the priest who told her to say her ‘Hail Mary’s’. She went because it was the only way she could look Jake in the eye, day after day. Abby changed out of her scrubs and began dressing in her regular clothes. Her shift was over for the day, and her appointment was in an hour when Luka had a break. As she pulled her jeans over her thighs and over her hips she sighed angrily when they wouldn’t button. Now she knew that they had fit this morning, so why wouldn’t they fit now. She threw them off and put back on her scrubs. She would have to go shopping for maternity clothes this afternoon, or wear scrubs until the baby was born. Abby grabbed a quiet bite to eat in the cafeteria, before her appointment. She was incredibly hungry now. All the time it seemed. She never had any particular cravings. She was just always hungry. It was as if her body was burning off every calorie as soon as it hit her tongue. She was sure that by the end of this pregnancy, she would be as big as a house. “Hey,” Luka said, joining her at the small table where she sat alone. “Where is everyone?” “I don’t know. I was kind of enjoying eating alone,” she mused. Abby looked down at her empty plate. “Can you believe it? I ate three muffins- the big ones, a sandwich, and two bags full of chips, and I’m still hungry?” “Yeah, well, you are pregnant,” he explained, getting a knowing glare from Abby. Luka noticed that she was still in her scrubs, but knew not to mention it. He had found her crying the other morning with five pairs of pants thrown around her room, none of them fit her anymore. He thought that she was adorable, and her skin had the perfect pregnancy glow. However, he knew that no matter how many times he told her that, she would just push it aside. She was going to feel the way she felt about it. No one could change that. Well, no one but perhaps Tommy. Luka knew it was silly that he felt that way about a dead guy. A guy that had been dead for over a year, but he couldn’t help it. In some ways, he felt Abby’s resistance to him and he couldn’t help feel it was because of Tommy. He knew, even though she never said it, that she would prefer that this was Tommy’s baby and that he was still alive. He knew that it wasn’t a large force guiding Abby, but it was there, just a little bit. And Abby wouldn’t completely accept him as the baby’s father, until she loved him like she had before, before Tommy. “I know, I am,” she said with a sigh. “I feel like a pig. My pants wouldn’t fit,” she pouted. “But you would be proud. I didn’t pitch a fit in the locker room like last time. Damn hormones, it’s like I’m not even in charge of my emotions anymore.” “Well, it won’t last forever,” Luka reassured her. “Now, come on. Let’s go and see what we’re having!” His excitement made Abby smiled, but his use of the word “we’re” caused an uneasiness that Abby wanted to get rid of. Why couldn’t she just get used to it already?

Thanks guys!! Chapter 38 Abby and Luka sat in the examining room, feeling restless. It was hard being a patient, they had both discovered. It is a lot of waiting. “Alright,” Janet said, as she entered the room. She always seemed a bit uneasy as she walked in to Abby. Her eyes seemed to dart to Luka as if he had once belonged to her, and that the fact he was going to be a father with another woman had been a shock to her. Abby shook her head of her thoughts. Maybe it was just her hormones raging again. “How has everything been?” Janet questioned them both. “Pretty good,” they both answered simultaneously. “Good. So we’re going to find out if it’s a boy or a girl today?” “Yes,” again together. “Alright, Abby, let’s lift up your gown. It’s going to be cold…we’ll you know the drill by now,” Janet told her with a smile. Abby smiled back. Yes by now this was second nature. “Okay, let’s see what we see.” Janet looked on the monitor and smiled. “Okay are you ready?” “Yes,” Abby told her, almost breathless. It felt so good to be excited about the pregnancy. “Okay, you see that right there.” Janet said, circling the screen with her finger. “Is that what I think it is?” Luka asked. “Yes,” Coburn and Abby said together. “You are having a baby boy,” Janet informed them. “Oh,” Abby happily sighed. She felt Luka lightly squeeze her hand. “A boy,” Luka said happily. “We’re having a boy.” Abby turned to look at Luka. His eyes were still fixated on the screen and she smiled. For the first time, she thought that maybe soon she wouldn’t mind him calling it ‘we,’ and she squeezed his hand back.
