Chapter 39 Three Months Later- OctoberLuka walked in a daze up and down the aisles at the supermarket at three o’clock in the morning. He placed a package of chips over the ice cream he had already gotten and then eagerly headed to the small checkout line where the girl working looked about as worn out as he felt. “Ice cream and chips this late at night?” The girl asked. Luka noticed that she was young and probably bored. So he nodded and replied. “Pregnant one at home,” he told her with a smile. Had he been in a chattier mood, he probably would have told her that he was having a boy and gone on and on about it, like he did with everyone else he came in contact with. “Oh,” she answered, apparently over it. Luka took the two bags and headed home. He has just gotten off work when he got the call from Abby asking for him to please stop by the store. There, apparently, was nothing at home a pregnant Abby could, or wanted, to eat. By now he was used to the odd hour calls, and secretly he loved it. He feigned annoyance to the others, who all knew he enjoyed every moment of it. Abby seemed now to really accept him as the baby’s father. She didn’t seem to wince when he said ‘us.’ It was great. The mood swings, however, were not. She would be up one moment and then down the next, and it seemed to get worse everyday. She screamed at him the morning before for being in the bathroom for too long, and then she sobbed uncontrollably saying she was sorry for yelling, and the next minute, after being in the bathroom for a few moments, she was smiling again. Luka could never be sure which mood she was in. Luka walked into the house quietly, not wanting to wake Susan or Carter (who practically lived there.) “Did you get it?” Abby asked eagerly as she waddled into the kitchen as quickly as she possibly could. “I’m starving.” Luka couldn’t help but grin. Abby’s top was just a little too short and was stretched around her still growing belly. She was still reluctant to buy new pyjamas. The pants she wore were his large sweat pants, but they tugged against her belly as well. “Here you go,” Luka handed her the bag of groceries. Abby took it and pulled out the chips and ice cream. “Um, Luka, I said chunky chip ice cream, not vanilla,” Abby told him. Luka began to protest. He was pretty sure she had said vanilla. He had even made her repeat it, just to be sure. But before he could, Abby turned to him with a pouty face, “I really need the chunky chip ice cream.” Luka sighed, he had learned quickly not to argue with her. “Oh okay, I’ll go back and get it.” “Wait,” Abby began. “I’ll go with you, so that we can get exactly what I want.” Luka stood waiting and Abby looked at him awkwardly. “Aren’t we going to go?” “Well, I thought you might want to change,” he said cautiously, unsure what reaction he might receive from her. Abby looked down and giggled. “Oh yeah! I might.”

Funny chapter! Poor Luka, having to go out at whatever time to get what Abby wants, but it is really sweet, considering he is not the father. Great update!

Chapter 40 A Little While Later Luka could not just have a basket this time, Abby insisted on a cart. She had already piled donuts, chips, and pretzels in the cart and they were now headed to the ice cream. Abby was eating a bag of salty chips as they walked toward the ice cream aisle. “We need this one, and this one, and this one,” Abby said as she piled three gallons of ice cream in the cart. Not one of them was chunky chip. “Abby, I thought you said you needed chunky chip,” Luka asked. “Yeah, well…I changed my mind,” Abby feebly explained. “Okay, then, can we go home?” “Yes.” They walked toward the cash register and the same girl was sitting at the checkout. Abby stopped when she saw a stack of macaroni and cheese. As she picked up one, her belly hit the stack and they all came crumbling down, causing Luka and the checkout girl to jump at the noise. Luka quickly bent down to start cleaning up the mess. “Great,” the checkout girl mumbled as she walked over to the mess. At that Abby crumbled. The tears tumbled down her cheeks. “I’m sorry,” she cried. “I didn’t mean to….I just wanted some mac and cheese. I’m…” Abby choked back a sob. Luka jumped up and took Abby gently by the shoulders. “It was just an accident, Ab,” he told her sweetly. “Not a big deal.” Abby sniffled, and Luka looked over to the checkout girl for support. “Yeah, it really isn’t a big deal. Really. Just a few boxes is all,” the girl stated, wanting very much for the other girl to stop crying. “Okay,” Abby whispered, wiping the tears with her hands. “Let’s check you guys out, now.”

Chapter 41 At Home“Alright, now we have at least enough food to last us a few nights,” Luka said as he put up all of the groceries. Abby sat at the island eating the vanilla ice cream and chips Luka had brought home originally. As much as he wanted to, Luka did not point this out. “How do you eat that?” Luka asked as Abby used the chip to scoop up the ice cream. “Here, try it,” Abby stated enthusiastically, handing him over an ice cream chip. Luka looked the chip over before trying it. “Yeah, that’s not that good,” Luka chuckled. “You should go to bed,” Abby told him, noticing the dark circles under his eyes. Luka nodded. “You should too. I don’t have to work until about ten, what about you?” “Eight.” Luka and Abby walked upstairs together and Luka dropped Abby outside of her room. “Luka,” Abby began as she laid her hand over her stomach. “Thank you so much for everything,” Abby began to tear up. “I really appreciate all that you have done for us. We are very lucky.” Then Abby bent over and kissed him sweetly on the cheek. Abby pulled away slowly. Luka and Abby gazed into one another’s eyes for a brief moment, before Luka pulled Abby into a kiss. When they pulled out of the kiss moments later, Abby smiled and Luka said, “Yes, well, we are a family.” I love you he thought to himself.

Chapter 42 Abby lay in bed not able to sleep. Her thoughts just kept repeating the kiss she and Luka had shared. It had been a sweet kiss, a simple kiss, but it said so much. It was almost like she could hear Luka telling her that he loved her. As the kiss played in her head, her cheeks burned. It wasn’t like their last kiss, so soon after Tommy’s death. That kiss had scared her, shocked her. It had come when she was still so unwilling to love anyone other than Tommy. But now… Now it was different. Now, she was ready. Abby closed her eyes as she repeated Luka’s words “Yeah, well, we are a family.” She wished now that she had said something, anything. However, she had just smiled and walked into her room. She had been too unsure with her thoughts to say anything to him. All she could do was run and hide and sort through them. It was what she had done after Tommy, and it was what she was doing now. Luka had been wonderful, truly wonderful. He went out after long shifts and got her food for her midnight cravings. He was extremely patient with her mood swings, and he even helped her put on her shoes. How had it taken her so long to realize how she felt about him? Well, of course, at the time, she was still in love with Tommy. She still was now, but in her heart there was room for more. She still missed Tommy and she didn’t think that her heart would ever forget him. He had been a special part in her life, but he would have wanted her to be happy. And right now, happy was Luka. The Next DayAbby sat in the locker room waiting until the very last minute to go to Kerry for their assignments. Her back continually ached and she constantly had to go to the bathroom. She couldn’t wait until December came and she was no longer pregnant. She was so over the pregnant thing. “I don’t know what’s up with Gallant, but I am so over it,” Neela huffed as she and Susan walked into the locker room. “I mean, and what’s with Carter agreeing with him? When did Gallant get all weddings are wonderful in winter? I thought we had decided on a nice spring wedding that’s like months away. I’m telling you this is all his mother’s idea.” Abby giggled and stood up to greet them. She didn’t want them to know how her body ached, and then they (being Neela) would use it against her to get the better surgeries. She may be pregnant, but she hadn’t lost her competitive edge. “Geez, Abby did you like grow over night? You’re huge,” Neela stated looking at Abby’s stomach. Susan shot Neela an evil glare. Neela didn’t live with Abby, she didn’t have the joy of Abby’s pregnancy hormonal breakdowns. Luckily, Abby didn’t let it bother her. “I don’t think I’m that big, seriously, I haven’t gained that much,” Abby stated as she put her hand protectively over her belly. As she felt a little kick, Abby began to smile. “What are you smiling about Ab?” Susan asked at Abby’s large grin. “He’s kicking, want to feel?” Susan nodded. Abby took her hand and placed it where the baby’s foot was. The baby gave an eager kick. “Wow, that’s awesome, Abby.” “Neela, do you want to feel?” Abby offered. “No thanks.” “Oh come on Neela, it feels really neat,” Susan told her. “Um, no. As I told you before, I don’t do babies. And don’t you dare ask Gallant to feel your stomach. Then he will be all about having a baby and that is not going to happen. All he’s getting from me is a wedding that is all…” “Hey guys, what’s up?” Jake interrupted. “Am I late? I’m not late am I? Kelly had to get here for an early shift and I accidentally slept in.” “Oh that’s so cute, you need your wife to wake you up in the morning,” Neela stated sarcastically, “No seriously that’s pathetic.” “The baby’s kicking,” Susan informed Jake. “You should feel. He’s kicking up a storm.” “Can I?” Jake asked Abby. “Sure,” Abby told him, although it did make her feel a bit awkward. Not that Jake was touching her belly, just the secrets that lay beneath the surface. “Where are my interns?” Weaver yelled as she pushed the door open.

Thanks guys!! Chapter 43 Jake, Neela, and Susan ran out into the hall, as Abby waddled behind them. “Sorry, we were feeling Abby’s tummy,” Jake lamely explained to Weaver, who did not seem to care. “Well, I wasn’t..” Neela began before Kerry cut her a look meaning that she didn’t care. Weaver told everybody were to go and told Abby to do triage again. “Again?” Abby whined. “Can’t I go with Susan or doesn’t someone else need me? I’ll help with Susan, or the others. I can’t spend another day in triage. I need a good surgery.” “Go.” “But…” “Now.” Abby huffed as she made her way to triage. She had been there all week, and she hadn’t assisted in a surgery for at least two weeks, her feet hurt, her back hurt, and she really had to go to the bathroom. She took a deep ragged breath, and the tears started to make their way down her face. Great, she murmured to herself, damn hormones. Later that DayAbby walked into the house, glad her shift was over. Triage had been over crowded with people who needed to be stitched up. She made her way up the stairs slowly and into her room. When she opened the door, she stood shocked. Sitting in the far corner of the room was a crib, and next to her bed was a small cradle. She walked over to examine the new furniture. The crib was a beautiful mahogany with soft blue sheets. Abby ran her fingers over it lightly. Inside the crib lay a little white teddy bear. Abby picked it up and held it to her chest, and then she went to look at the small cradle. It was pure white, and in it sat a note. Abby sat down, picked it out of the cradle, and read the note. Abby- I hope you don’t mind. You and I have been too busy lately to really get everything the baby needs. But I saw these two things online a while ago and thought they were perfect. If you don’t like it we can change it. Love, Luka.Abby held the bear even tighter, but this time it wasn’t sad tears that escaped her eyes. It was happy ones.

Chapter 44 That NightAbby woke up when she heard Luka enter his room. She got up, as fast as she could, and headed to his bed room. “Did I wake you?” Luka asked, concern filling his voice. “No,” Abby assured him. “I love it.” “Really?” Luka asked her, as he took a seat on the bed, motioning for Abby to do the same. “It’s wonderful.” Abby looked down at the bear she was still holding. “Luka, I’ve been thinking…” “What?” “Well, you, me and the baby, we are a family. And I think that our little boy should have your last name,” Abby said as her eyes looked up to Luka. “Are you sure?” “Yes, that is, if you want him to.” Luka began to smile. “Of course I do, little boy Kovac, I like the sound of that.” “Me too.” Abby stood up like she was going to go, and Luka stood up with her, helping her up. Abby grinned, and bent over kissing him lightly on the lips. Luka stood shocked, but instead of saying anything he kissed her back a little more deeply than they had before. They pulled away slowly, their eyes still closed. Abby opened them slowly looking at Luka. Everything seemed to fit now. “Luka,” she whispered. They stared at one another for a few moments, neither wanting to break the sweet silence that lay between them. “Abby,” Luka said, causing a slight jump from Abby. “I love you, I have always loved you, and I will love you forever.” Abby lightly chuckled. “Oh Luka, I love you too.”

Chapter 45 December 7th, 2007Abby attempted to find something, anything, suitable to wear on a somewhat romantic dinner night. Luka had suggested the dinner-date for Abby, saying that after the baby came there would be little time for her to indulge in things she loved. Although the suggestion was sweet, Abby was not looking forward to it. She was so tired and worn out, and all she wanted to do was sleep. Her feet were swollen and her body was sore. “Abby,” Susan said as she entered Abby’s room. All over the floor and the bed was a massive pile of clothes. “Oh, Abby,” Susan repeated seeing the mess. “What’s all this?” “Luka wants to take me out tonight, but I can’t find anything to wear. Nothing fits anymore,” Abby whined, trying to keep herself off of the verge of tears. It had seemed the closer she was to having the baby the worse her emotions had gotten. She couldn’t remember being that emotional when she had been pregnant the last time. “Oh, okay,” Susan said as her eyes scanned the bedroom. She bent down and picked up a pink shirt. “This is pretty, weren’t you wearing it the other day?” “Yes, but it has a stain on it. I spilt ice cream on it.” “What about this?” “Doesn’t fit.” “Hum….” Susan stepped over the piles of clothes and to the closet. In it was just a simple black dress and some black pants. “Wear these,” she said showing Abby the black maternity pants (since she knew the dress wouldn’t fit. It was pre-pregnancy.) “And…” Susan searched for a dark green top that had fit Abby perfectly just a week ago, “this.” Abby eyed the clothing and nodded. “Okay.” “Now, I’ll help you clean this mess and then help you fix your hair and find you some jewellery, and put on your shoes.”
