Chapter 46 Later that NightAbby smiled as Luka told the waiter of the baby boy he was having. The waiter, she could tell, really didn’t care, but Luka was telling him anyway. Abby loved the way he loved the baby. Their relationship the last two months had been all about the baby, as it had before, but it had also blossomed into something else. They had gotten closer. It felt so good to truly be loved. Abby was so glad to have Luka there to love her and the baby, and she loved him too. Ever since they had muttered those words, everyone knew it. It was like they were a new couple smiling and flirting all of the time. Neela found it highly annoying and told them just to get a room already, and Susan found it adorable. “So, what are you going to name him?” The waiter asked, pulling Abby out of her thoughts. “Um,” Abby began looking uneasily at Luka, “we haven’t decided, yet.” Sure the baby was due in one week, but Abby and Luka had hardly discussed baby names. It was so difficult. With her other baby, the name had hit her so quickly. But at that time, she wasn’t even hers to name, and the baby had grown up known as Hannah. This time, the baby would live with this name forever, so she had to put thought into it. “Oh,” the waiter said, somewhat surprised that the baby hadn’t a name yet. “Okay, would you like to order?” Luka ordered for the both of them and the waiter walked away. “What’s your middle name?” Luka asked Abby randomly. Abby looked up at him curiously. “Marjorie, it was my mom’s friend’s name, why?” Abby questioned Luka, finding it unsually odd for him to ask her such a weird question. “Abigail Marjorie Lockhart ,” Luka said trying the name out on his lips. Then he answered her question, “I just want to know everything about you.” Abby blushed. “Oh. What’s your middle name?” She asked back. “Josip” “Nice, I like that name” “Did you know that the name Luke is the patron saint of doctors?” Abby asked Luka randomly a few seconds later. “No, I didn’t know that.” Luka told her. “Um, Abby,” Luka began again, his voice slightly shaking, “I’ve been thinking….” Luka paused. “What I mean is,” Luka took Abby’s hand in his. “I called your mother this morning…” “You called my mother?” Abby asked shocked. It was no secret that she and her mother were not very close, so she wondered what Luka was doing calling her. “Why?” “Because I didn’t know how to contact your father,” Luka responded with a smile, although Abby missed it. “You didn’t tell her about the baby did you?” Abby asked him. “No, no, nothing like that. That is your news to tell,” Luka told her politely. “I called, because, well.” Luka pulled out a small jewellery box. “I was thinking that perhaps you could share the same last name with the baby and me, and,” Luka opened the small box to show an engagement ring, “marry me.” Abby stared at the ring. “Oh, god,” she said as she clutched the side of the table. “I know it’s all of the sudden, and we haven’t been ‘dating’ for that long. However, I really think that we have made a connection and I know that I want to marry you. Now, I know that the ring won’t fit your fingers right this second, but I got you this chain so you can wear it around your neck, that is if you want…” Luka babbled. Abby squeezed the table even tighter until her knuckles grew white. “Luka…” “Abby, it’s okay if you don’t want to…” “No Luka, I’m in labour.”

Chapter 47 At the HospitalLuka had rushed to the hospital after Abby had made the announcement that she was having the baby. He had nearly forgotten to pay the bill. Now Abby was in full blown labour, five hours later. It was nearing on midnight, and if the baby wasn’t born in the next few minutes, its birthday would be on the eight, exactly a week before its due date. “Alright, Abby,” Janet told her. “It’s time to push.” Abby had been beyond ready for this moment. She was thankful for epidurals and the fact that the baby would be out soon. “Abby, you’re doing great,” Luka soothed as she clasped his hand tightly in the middle of a push. “Just one more push,” Janet informed Abby during a short break. Abby prepared herself for the final push, ready to greet her baby boy. “And here he is!” Janet said showing Abby and Luka a small little baby boy. Janet had Luka cut the umbilical cord and then did a quick cleaning of the baby before handing him over to Abby. “Oh,” Abby cooed. “He’s beautiful. Yes, you are. You are mama’s sweet boy,” Abby told him as she gently kissed him on the forehead. Luka manoeuvred himself on the bed next to Abby and the baby taking the baby’s small hand in his. “So, do you have a name for him?” Janet questioned with a smile. It was then that Abby knew what she wanted to name him. “Yes,” she said with a smile. “I want to name him Luke. Is that okay with you?” Abby asked Luka. “Yes,” Luka told her with a grin. “It’s perfect. Luke Kovac”. “That’s a nice name,” Janet told them both. “I’m going to go tell the others, if that’s okay. They’ve been waiting out in the hall impatiently.” “Of course,” Abby told her. “Just don’t tell them the name.” “I won’t.” After Janet left, Abby and Luka just sat there staring at the new little life before them. “He’s so wonderful,” Luka said as Abby nodded. “That he is, he really is,” she murmured as she inspected Luke’s fingers and toes. “Luka,” she said looking up at the proud father. “Yes.” “I would be happy to be your wife.”

Chapter 48 “Tell me why we’re doing this again,” Neela complained as she strung blue garland up around Susan’s living room as Susan and Carter were hanging up the “Welcome Home Luke!” banner. “Because we’re excited for Abby, and this is what friends do,” Susan informed her as she put up the banner. “When are Jake and Kelly going to get here with the cake? Abby and Luka are supposed to be here in less than an hour with the baby.” “And how long is this supposed to last? Don’t you think that Luka and Abby just want to enjoy time with their baby? Not spend time with us…” “Neela, you are not getting out of this,” Susan told her, before handing her a package of diapers. “Will you put these with the other necessities?” Neela did a quick inspection of the package in her hand and scrunched up her nose. “Oh, kill me now.” At the HospitalAbby pulled her long brown locks up into a ponytail. She was so happy to be going home. She would be going home with her son and fiancé. Those words, son and fiancé, felt odd and wonderful floating on the edge of her tongue. She was happy, finally truly, happy. And it felt wonderful. “Here, let me take him,” Abby offered taking Luke out of Luka’s wary arms. Luka or she had not slept in many hours and they were both exhausted, but very proud parents. Abby searched her son’s sleeping face, as she once again tried to tell who Luke took after. He had only a small bit of fuzz at the top of his head, and Abby assumed that he was probably going to be a brown haired. He had the cutest little nose. Abby swore it looked just like a button. His eyes were dark, and he was always looking around at his surroundings. Abby could see a little of Jake in his face. Especially when he yawned, but Abby knew that the baby’s features would change within the first few days. It kind of scared her that he may look like Jake, because then he might find out. And at the same time, she felt guilty that Jake was missing out. “Want to put him in his take home outfit?” Luka asked, shaking Abby out of her thoughts. Abby nodded and Luka pulled out the “Dr. Baby” onesie he had bought many months ago. Abby pulled the onesie over the baby’s body and laughed when it swallowed his little body. “He is such a little baby,” Abby said. “Mama’s little baby,” she cooed. “Are you ready to go home, baby boy?” Abby swayed her body back and forth. She stopped mid sway when she felt her son’s back move up and down rapidly from breathing. “Luka,” Abby said worriedly. “Something’s not right. Luke’s breathing really fast.” Luka took a seat next to Abby and put his hand on Luke’s back. “Hum, he is breathing a little fast,” Luka agreed. “We should get Dr. Coburn. Just in case,” Abby told Luka. Luka nodded and went out of the room to find Janet.

Chapter 49 When Janet came back into the room, Abby had the baby lying on the bed between her legs and had a look of fear covering her features. “He turned blue,” Abby told them, her voice shaking severely as she held her baby’s hand. Janet rushed to Luke’s side. “I don’t know what happened. He just turned blue…” “Abby,” Luka began placing his hand on Abby’s shoulder. However, he didn’t know what else to say. He was just as scared. Keeping completely calm, Janet pulled her stethoscope from around her shoulders and placed it on Luke’s chest. “Hum,” Janet murmured as she listened to Luke’s heart. “What?” Abby questioned her, worry filling every edge of her voice. She grabbed Luka’s hand in hers. “I can’t be sure until I do some tests.” Janet admitted as she stood up straight. “Wh..what do you think it is?” Abby asked. It’s nothing, Abby prayed for Janet to say. “I don’t know,” Janet fibbed. She knew that Abby probably had many scenarios running through her head with what it could possibly be. However, Abby wanted to play ignorant, because it made it a little easier. Made it easier to think that it could just be nothing. “Well, what are you going to do?” Luka asked. “I’m going to take Luke and do some tests,” Janet informed the both of them. “Then, we’ll go from there.” After Janet took Luke out of the room for some tests, Abby sunk onto the bed. Everything was sinking in to her. Something might not be okay with her baby. Her baby. She felt her chest beginning to tighten as fear consumed her body. Luka took a seat next to her and put his arm around her shoulders pulling her close to him. “What if something is really wrong with him? What are we going to…” Luka quieted her. “No, Ab’s, don’t think like that. It could be nothing. Just wait and pray.” “But his heart,” Abby’s voice cracked. “Janet seemed worried, and it has to be his heart.” Luka squeezed her gently and lovingly. But neither of them said anything more. They just waited for Janet to come back with their baby boy. A Little While LaterJanet and Kerry walked into the room where Luka and Abby hand not yet left, although they were supposed to check out quite sometime before. However, they sat in the same position, both praying and waiting to hear about Luke. When Janet and Kerry entered the room, both Abby and Luka jumped off the bed to see what was going on. When Abby saw Kerry, her heart sank. It must be bad, she had thought, if Janet brought her for support. “Where’s Luke?” Abby questioned. “He’s in the ICU.” “ICU?” Luka asked, feeling Abby’s weight as she leaned against him for support. “Why is he there?” “Abby,” Kerry began softly, knowing that she needed to approach this carefully. That was why she was here. She hadn’t meant to get involved, but she saw Janet with Luke and had to get involved. Luke was like her family too. Kerry looked to Janet making sure she didn’t mind her telling them, then she looked to Luka and then back at Abby with soft eyes. “Luke has ventricular defect.” Abby closed her eyes and shook her head, and then let out a small laugh. “You’re kidding me right?” “No,” Janet told her gently. “Oh, god,” Abby whispered. “Luke has a hole in his heart.”

Thanks guys!! Chapter 50 Abby sat numbly as Janet and Kerry explained things to her and Luka that they both already knew. They were doctors, they new about these kinds of things. They had operated on children who had holes in their hearts, but Abby never thought that that one day might be her son. “I want to keep Luke for a couple of days to monitor his weight gain, his heart beat, and the amount of fluid that is circulating. We may have to put him on a feeding tube if he doesn’t gain enough weight eating on his own. It is a large hole, but there is a chance that the hole could close on its own,” Janet explained slowly, noting the paleness in Abby’s face. “It isn’t a terrible diagnosis. If we have to we can always operate, but we won’t until he is one as long as we can keep everything under control.” Abby nodded. She knew all of this. She had written a paper about ventricular defects. She new every detail about it. She knew that it could be treated, but it didn’t make her feel any better. Why did something have to be wrong with Luke’s heart? Abby felt Luka take her hand. His hand was strong and it made her feel slightly better. Abby’s free hand pulled lightly on the chain around her neck that held her engagement ring. It was slightly reassuring. Luka, Luke, and she were going to be a family. But at the same time, it hurt because her baby was sick. “Can we go…” Luka’s shaky voice began. “I have to get out of here,” Abby stated, getting up from the bed and walking straight out of the hospital room. Kerry, Janet, and Luka sat awkwardly for a few moments. Just as Luka was about to get up and go after Abby, an annoying noise came from Luka’s pocket. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his cell phone. “Hello,” he asked weakly. “Where are you guys? You were supposed to be home hours ago. I’ve tried calling Abby, but she hasn’t answered her phone,” Susan’s voice came from the other end. “We’re not coming home, yet. Luke…” Luka paused. “He has to stay for a couple more days.” Luka didn’t want to go into the details. Right now he needed to find Abby. He was really worried about her. “Is something wrong with him?” Luka could hear worry edging Susan’s voice. “Look, I need to go,” Luka began, “I’ll explain more to you later.” “Oh okay,” Susan replied weakly as Luka hung up the phone without a good bye. “I’m going to go check on Abby,” Luka explained to Kerry and Janet who nodded lightly, as Luka walked out of the room.

Chapter 51 Luka walked down the hospital hallway trying to find Abby. He had a feeling he knew where she was, so he headed toward the supply closet. As he opened the door, he heard soft sobbing. Quick on his feet, he walked toward Abby. He didn’t speak a word. Instead he took a seat next to her, and pulled her into his embrace. He let her cry, her tears soaking into his sweater. “Abby,” Luka began several moments later, pulling her chin up so he could see her face. “Luke is going to be okay,” Luka told her, his voice strong. “It’s all my fault,” Abby cried as she choked on her words. “What?” “His heart, it’s my fault,” Abby told him, as she sat up straight and wiped the tears off of her face with the palm of her hand. “Abby, it’s not your fault.” “Yes, yes it is,” she said as more tears cascaded down her face. “I lied to Jake. I kept this secret. I killed Tommy...” “Abby, you did not kill…” “This is my punishment,” Abby whispered. “No, Abby, stop,” Luka said forcibly. “This is not your punishment, or, or your fault. It is just one of those things that happens. Now I don’t believe that God punishes children for their parent’s mistakes.” Abby nodded and then confessed, “I don’t either, but…” “No,” Luka said softly. “It’s not your fault. Luke is going to be okay. This is not the worse thing that he could have been diagnosed with. Yes, it stinks. But, he is your son. He’s strong.” “Yeah,” Abby sighed. “He’s wonderful. I’m just so scared.” “I know you are, Abby. I am two. But, we three are a family, and we are going to get through this together. You, me, and Luke. We’ll get through this and anything else that gets thrown at us. Together.”

Chapter 52 Two Days LaterThe door creaked as Luka pushed it open for Luke and Abby. Abby held her sleeping boy against her chest as she entered the house. She kissed him lightly on his fuzzy head as she stepped into the foyer. “It’s quiet,” she whispered as she looked at all of the decorations that had been left up for the past two days. “I guess we missed out on our party,” she stated as she saw a half eaten cake with “Wel- ho-Lu” written on it. “I guess so,” Luka responded. “Let’s go upstairs.” Luka led Abby and Luke upstairs as he carried Abby’s over night bag and Luke’s diaper bag. It was from Susan. She had brought it to the hospital after they didn’t show up for the party. She had been worried about them all. So, she had come to see them and had brought them a gift. It was a sweet little diaper bag with Luke’s initials LK stitched on it. And inside had been several items that the others (Neela, Jake, and Kelly) had added. Abby placed Luke into his cradle next to her bed. She lightly traced his face with her finger before sitting on her bed. Luka took a seat next to her and placed his hand on her shoulder. “You tired?” He asked her. “Very,” Abby responded with a yawn. She and Luka had gotten very little sleep the past few days. Between the birth of Luke, the diagnosis, and staying in the hospital for three days neither of them had gotten much sleep. Abby had still been struggling with guilt over Luke’s heart. But, for now, Janet said that he was strong, and that Abby should be happy. He was eating well and gaining weight like he should. That did make it easier for Abby to breathe. They would still have to go for weekly check-ups, and Luke had medicine that he needed to take. It wasn’t going to be easy, but the three of them were going to make it. “You should sleep,” Luka told her. “It’s been quite a few days, and who knows when Luke here will wake up.” “Oh, I hope not for a while,” Abby said as she yawned again and lay on the bed. “I’m exhausted.” Luka pulled a blanket over Abby and kissed her sweetly on the cheek. “Sleep tight,” he told her as he headed toward the door. “Wait,” Abby said as she sat up slightly in her bed, “where are you going?” “Um, to my room.” “Oh,” Abby stated disappointedly. “Why?” “Well,” Abby began, “maybe you could sleep in here with me and Luke.” “Oh,” Luka said with a grin. “I just thought that you might want to sleep alone.” “No.” “Okay, then.” Luka crawled into the bed with Abby, pulling her into his embrace where her back was touching his chest. “Much better,” Abby mumbled before falling into a deep sleep.

Chapter 53 One Hour LaterAbby deep slumber was broken by a baby’s cry. She sat up, pulling herself out of Luka’s embrace. Luka sat up dazed beside her. “Hey,” she whispered to Luke, pulling him up gently from the bed. “How’s mama’s baby?” Luke’s dark eyes looked up, and Abby smiled. “Good morning, beautiful boy.” “It’s five o’clock in the afternoon,” Luka corrected her. “Oh well, whatever,” Abby joked. “We don’t care, do we Luke?” “Well, we don’t want to teach him wrong,” Luka teased Abby, as she bounced Luke lightly up and down. “True.” Abby yawned, placed Luke in her lap, and leaned onto Luka. “So,” Luka began. “So?” Abby questioned. “When do we make this official?” Luka asked Abby. “Make what official?” “You, me, Luke.” “We are official.” Abby told Luka. “No, I mean. When are you and I going to get married?” Luka asked her. Abby unconsciously pulled on the chain holding her engagement ring. They had yet to tell anyone about their engagement. Not because they were keeping it a secret, but because they had had some much happen since they had gotten engaged. “Um, I don’t know. We just got engaged,” Abby reminded him. “And we haven’t even told the others yet.” “I know,” Luka told her. “But I’m just so ready to get married to you. Then, you, Luke, and I will be an official family.” Abby nodded. “I’m ready too,” she confessed. “But, I think we should tell the others first and I think that we should wait until Luke is stronger. I know Coburn said that he was strong, but I want him to be better. Or at least, where I’m comfortable leaving him with someone for at least one night. Because, we’ll have to have some sort of honeymoon.” “Of course.” “And I want to lose some of this baby weight before I walk down the isle..” “Abby, you look perfect.” “Thanks, but you are lying. But after all of that, you and I can get married.” “Okay,” Luka said, as he took Abby’s hand. “How about six months?” “Six months?” “Yes, a summer wedding. June. Luke will be six months old, and he can be in the wedding.” Abby thought it over for a few moments before responding. “Okay,” Abby replied. “Six months sounds good.”
