Chapter 54 Four Months LaterAbby pulled her scrubs up over her hips and sighed unhappily as they snug on her waist. No matter how much she tried, she couldn’t seem to lose those last few pregnancy pounds. And with the wedding approaching fast, Abby wanted to look like she had before Luke. However, she was beginning to think that it was not going to happen. “Hey, Ab,” Susan said as she took a seat on the bench near Abby. “Did you just get here?” “Yeah,” Abby responded, pulling her long locks up into a tight bun. “Luke is at the nursery. Luka had to be in three hours ago. I’ll tell you, this baby and work thing is hard.” “I bet,” Susan agreed. “But, it’s worth it,” Abby told her with a bright smile. Susan smiled back. She was so glad to see Abby truly happy. After all that had happened with Tommy, Abby deserved a happy life. And now it seemed like Abby had it all. A fiancé that was extremely in love with her, and a precious baby boy. Susan had been worried about Abby when she had heard about Luke’s heart. Of all of the things to be wrong with that boy, why did it have to be his heart? Susan was sure that Abby would crack, but all that she had seen was strong mama, ready to face anything for Luke. Kelly and Jake walked into the locker room. As they entered, it was obvious that something wasn’t right. Kelly didn’t speak a word. She just walked in, opened the locker door, threw something into it, and slammed the door. Jake attempted to speak to her. He leaned into her sweetly, and tried to whisper in her ear. However, she pushed him away. That’s when Abby and Susan could see tears coming down Kelly’s face. “Don’t,” she told Jake sternly. “Don’t try to make this better.” She wiped away the tears. She then glanced over at Abby and Susan. The shocked look on her face let them know that she hadn’t a clue that they were in there. She just stood up straight and left Jake standing quiet and awkward in the locker room.

Chapter 55 “Jake?” Susan questioned. Abby walked over to Jake. “Hey, Jake,” Abby began lightly, “are you okay?” Jake nodded, but didn’t say a thing. “What happened?” “Um,” Jake said, searching his brain for what he wanted to say. “It’s just that Kelly just found out that she can’t have children and she’s always wanted a big family. She’s really upset. Don’t let her know that I told you. She’s having a hard time dealing with this.” “Okay,” Susan and Abby responded, as Susan gave him a sympathetic smile. However, Abby stood there shocked. Kelly couldn’t have kids. Kelly and Jake could not have kids. Guilt quickly consumed her body. Luke was over in the nursery, and Jake was not going to have kids. Sure they could adopt, but Jake was not going to have a son or daughter of his own. But, he did. “Ab’s?” Jake asked noting her distressed expression. Abby quickly put on a false weak smile. “Sorry, that just really stinks, I’m sorry,” Abby told him, thinking that he didn’t know how truly sorry she was. Abby excused herself from the locker room and went to find Luka. When Luka saw Abby’s face, fear consumed his body. “Is it Luke? Is it his heart?” Luka asked her, as he pulled her into an empty exam room. “No,” she told him as a few salty tears made their way down her face. “What is it?” He asked her sweetly. “Hey, hey,” he whispered taking her hands in his. “It’s Kelly.” “What about Kelly? Did she find out?” “No.” “Well, Abby, what is it?” “It’s just that, she can’t have children. And now Jake won’t have his own children…but…” Abby stated through her tears. Luka pushed back a stray hair from Abby’s face and nodded letting her know that he understood. “Do you want to tell him?” Luka asked Abby. “What?” Abby asked him surprised. “No, no, Luke’s yours. He’s yours. I wouldn’t take that away from you, never. It’s just that, I felt guilty is all.” “I know you do,” Luka told her. “But it isn’t your fault that Kelly can’t have children. Don’t put that blame on yourself.” “Okay,” Abby sniffled. Luka kissed her gently on the cheek. “Now I’ve got to go. I have a patient. I’ll pick Luke up at 3. Then you’ll be home at 7 right?” “Yes.” Luka winked at Abby and kissed her once more. “See you at home.”

Chapter 56 Two Months Later Susan and Neela helped Abby pull her white dress over her head so that it didn’t mess up her large bun. The dress was simple, but beautiful. Abby had wanted it to be a simple, sweet wedding. As the others prepped his mother for her wedding day, Luke slept in his cradle. The little one had no idea what was going on. He just slept the mid-morning away. “Beautiful,” Susan stated as she looked at Abby through the mirror. “You are a sight for sore eyes. Everyone will be staring at you the whole wedding.” “Thanks,” Abby blushed. She just found it so odd that she was getting married. It felt odd, but it felt good as well. “So, I will hold Luke during the ceremony, right?” Susan asked as she looked in on the sleeping boy. He had gotten big. His head was full of thick curls. Abby thought that he looked like a beautiful cubby cherub. “Yes, you’ll hold him. He shouldn’t be fussy. We’ll feed him right before we go out. He’s been an easy baby, so we shouldn’t have any problems,” Abby explained. “What about me?” Neela asked, “I don’t have to hold it, do I?” Abby rolled her eyes. “When will you stop insisting on calling Luke an ‘it’?” “When he stops spitting up and crying all the time.” “Oh, but he loves his Aunt Neela,” Susan teased. Neela looked in on the sleeping baby. “Yeah, well, he is cute, but I’m still ready for him to be older.” “Oh, don’t say that. I don’t want him to grow up too quickly; it already feels like he has grown so fast. It just feels like yesterday that he was born,” Abby stated. “Hey, are you guys almost ready to go,” Jake asked as he peeped into the room, covering his eyes (just incase they were in the middle of changing). “Almost,” Susan informed him. “We just got to change Luke and we’ll be ready to go.” “Okay,” Jake said as he popped back out of the room. “Do you know what’s kind of odd?” Neela asked, as Luke began to stir in his sleep. “What?” Abby asked, picking up Luke carefully so that she didn’t wrinkle her dress. “Luke kind of looks like Jake. He has his cheeks,” Neela observed. “Must be from hanging around him often,” Abby said as she nervously chuckled. Abby ruffled Luke’s curls. “But he has his daddy’s nose. Don’t you baby boy?” Luke laughed and Abby gave him an Eskimo kiss. “Alright baby boy,” Abby said, “go to your Aunt Susan and get dressed for Mommy and Daddy’s wedding.”

Chapter 57 Later that Day “Do you Luka Kovac take the Abigail Lockhart to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, for this day forward, all the days of your life?” “I do.” “And do you Abigail Lockhart take the Luka Kovac to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, for this day forward, all the days of your life?” “I do.” The preacher continued with the ceremony. As they placed their rings on one another, Abby felt like she was on cloud nine. They were a family now, and no one would ever break them apart. “I now pronounce you man and wife. You may now kiss the bride.” Luka placed his hands sweetly over Abby’s cheeks and pulled her into a deep kiss. Claps began and they pulled away from one another slowly. “I love you,” Luka whispered. “I love you too,” Abby whispered back. As they walked down the isle together, Abby took Luke from Susan. She wanted him to walk down with them. The three of them were a family. Forever. At the Reception“I am pleased to announce Dr. Luka and Dr. Abby Kovac,” the DJ stated, “as they dance their first dance as a married couple.” Luka led Abby out onto the floor. He placed one hand on her hip and took her other hand. They swayed and manoeuvred around the dance floor, each staring into one another eyes. “I can’t tell you how happy I am,” Abby told Luka. “This is more than I ever dreamed of.” “Me too,” Luka whispered in her ear. Luka motioned to Susan to bring him Luke. Abby smiled and took Luke into her arms, and they placed him evenly between them. “Our first dance as an official family,” Luka told her. “Yes, official.” Later“Susan, if anything happens, don’t hesitate to call me. Don’t forget to give him his medicine before he goes to bed. If you notice anything odd with his breathing or anything rush him straight to the hospital,” Abby explained to Susan over the phone for the millionth time. “Yes, I know all of this, Abby. Luke is just fine. He’s playing with Carter right now,” Susan reassured her. “Abby,” Luka called from the restroom in the hotel. “You aren’t bothering Susan again, are you?” “Um, no,” Abby called, covering the phone. “Sorry Susan,” Abby stated back in the phone. “Just tell Luke we love him, and I’ll see him tomorrow.” “Of course, bye Ab’s.” Abby put down the phone and Luka took a seat next to her. “He’s going to be fine,” Luka told her, lightly kissing her cheek. “I know it’s just hard. I’ve never left him alone over night before. I miss him.” “I know you do,” Luka told her. “But, think of it this way. This is the first time we’ve been alone since Luke was born.” “Um, oh yeah that,” Abby said with a smile. “That is good. I guess we do deserve some alone time, for at least one night. We are newlyweds,” she said seductively. “Uh huh,” Luka whispered. “Just you and me for one entire night,” Abby said. “No paging from the hospital, no 6:30 am wake up cry from a baby, just you and me … I do like this.” “Good,” Luka said as he covered her lips with his. “Now,” he said pulling away momentarily. “Let’s make this official.”

Chapter 58 One Month LaterAbby was having a bad day. No scratch that, horrible day. Everything that could have gone wrong had gone wrong. For one, she had gotten in late, so she had to work in triage. There she stitched up countless patients for hours and hours on end. Then, she went to pick Luke up from daycare and took him to his doctor’s appointment. There Janet informed her and Luka that she was concerned about Luke’s weight. She said that if his weight didn’t increase soon or if it began to decrease, then they would have to operate on his heart sooner than they had thought. And then to top it all off, Abby was in a very irritable mood. Everything was setting her off. She couldn’t wait for the day to be over, but it was only lunch time. “Come on Luke, eat something,” Abby begged, trying to feed her seven month old some strained peas. Luke shook his head and pushed the spoon out of his way, getting green mush all over his fingers. He then wiped his hands over his face and into his hair. “Luke!” Abby scolded as Susan and Neela joined her at the table. “Eh, Abby why is the baby here at our lunch time?” Neela asked looking at Luke uncomfortably. “Because, I wanted to have lunch with my son,” Abby snapped at Neela. Neela and Susan shared glances, but said nothing more about it in front of Abby. “Hey Luke,” Susan said, as she took a seat next to Luke. Abby fixed another spoon full of peas and placed it in front of Luke’s mouth. He, again, pushed the food away. “Maybe the kid doesn’t like nasty green mush,” Neela stated offering a suggestion. “No, he loves green beans. And I’d appreciate it, if you kept your thoughts to yourself!” Abby growled as she lifted Luke out of his high chair and placed him in her lap. “Geez, Abby. What’s wrong with you?” Neela asked. “You’re acting like you did that time you were pregnant with Luke. You aren’t pregnant again, are you?” “No,” Abby said with a laugh that insinuated that it was ridiculous for Neela even to suggest it. “Good,” Neela replied before she began back her earlier conversation with Susan. And as Abby sat there, the question Neela asked her plagued her thoughts. She had been awfully cranky lately, and she had been feeling a little sickly…No, that was ridiculous. She couldn’t be…..No. Could she?

Chapter 59 Abby got up from her chair and began piling all of Luke’s things together haphazardly with her one free hand. “Abby, where are you going?” Susan asked Abby. “Um, I’ve…well, I’ve got to go, um, bye.” Later that Afternoon“Seriously!” Abby screamed as she looked at the little blue line on the pregnancy test. “Seriously!!” Luke was sleeping soundly in his nursery all tucked in. His room was full of boxes, as was Abby and Luka’s room, because they were moving out in one month. They had bought a house, because they felt that they needed a place of their own. They thought that it was about time to move out of Susan’s and have their very own place. Susan had just left to go on a run with Neela, and Luka was at work. So, Abby had figured this to be her perfect opportunity to take the pregnancy test. She had been fretting about it all day since Neela had brought it up. Abby glanced at it again, thinking, hoping, that it may have changed. It hadn’t. The little blue line was still there. “Seriously!” She yelled again, not able to formulate any real coherent thought. “Seriously! Again! So soon! I can’t believe this!...Seriously!” Susan and Neela entered the house and were shocked to hear the yelling coming from upstairs. At first, they rushed up, wanting to make sure that Abby was alright. However, when they heard her mumbling, they realized she was just having an inner battle with herself. So, they just stood up at the top of the stairs trying to figure out what she was rambling on about. “Seriously!” “Hey guys, what’s going on?” Luka asked when he entered the house and saw Neela and Susan standing at the top of the stairs. “Um, Abby is having some kind of mental breakdown in the bathroom,” Neela informed him. “What?” Luka asked concerned as he rushed up the stairs. “Where’s Luke?” “Um, I think he’s napping.” “Oh, okay. Will you check on him? I’m going to check on Abby.” “Okay,” Susan told him. “Seriously!” Abby yelled again, as Luka entered the room. When she saw Luka. Abby quickly hid the stick behind her back. “A..Luka,” she stammered. “I-I didn’t know that you were home.” “Yeah, Susan and Neela are here too. We’re a little worried about you,” he said softly as he walked toward her slowly. “Are you okay? You’ve been yelling.”

Chapter 60 Abby shook her head quickly and laughed nervously. “I’m okay,” she informed him. “I’m just shocked is all.” “Shocked?” “Uh huh.” “Why?” Luka asked her. “Well, because…” Abby paused. She then handed Luka the stick that was in her hand. Blue line and all. “Abby, what is this?” Luka questioned, even though he was pretty sure he knew what he was holding. However, he wasn’t sure why he was holding it. “I’m pregnant.” Abby blurted out. “And, and…I mean, seriously! Can you believe it? I must be the most fertile creature on this planet! I mean other than those people that have like 15 kids, but really! Again, another one so soon! Luke is only seven months old! I mean…..Seriously!” Luka gently placed his hands on her shoulders as he tried to process what Abby was telling him. “Abby, stop for a second,” He said soothingly. Abby took a deep breath and then bit the inside of her lip nervously. “So, we’re having a baby?” Abby nodded. “Another baby?” Abby nodded again. “You and me?” “Yes,” Abby huffed, no longer able to keep quiet and pulling out of Luka’s hands. “And do you realize that as soon as Luke gets out of a stage, this one will just be getting into it?! I mean diapers and potty training and teething and the terrible twos! We’ll have two kids under the age of two. And it’s hectic enough with one, what will we do with two?” “I don’t know, but we’ll figure it out, Ab’s,” Luka told her, smiling lightly. “I know we will, I do. It’s just…” Abby paused looking for the right words, “a shock.” “Yes, it is.” Luka agreed. Abby took a deep breath and Luka pulled her into a hug. “So,” Luka began. “So,” Abby said lightly. “Another baby.” She pulled out of the hug and gave Luka a small smile. “This is a good thing, right? I mean, it’s unexpected, and a total shock, and it’s going to be really hectic with the two babies, but it’s good, right?” “Yes, it’s a good thing. It’s a…well, an unexpected surprise.”

Chapter 61 Four Months Later“I’m so sorry, Ab’s,” Luka said over the phone. Abby stood in the locker room lightly bouncing a sleeping eleven month old Luke while she balanced the phone on her shoulder and shifted through her locker for a change of clothes. “It’s okay, you had to go, I understand,” Abby reassured him. She pulled out the clothes from her locker, then threw them back in when she realized that there was no way she could change with a sleeping baby on her hip. Had she known that Luka was going to be called to go on an ambulance run, she would have kept Luke in daycare a little while longer so that she could change. Luke had an appointment with Janet in thirty minutes and this would be the first time that Luka would miss an appointment. Abby could hear his disappointment over the phone, and she knew that he wished that he was here. This wasn’t an appointment that they could reschedule, either. Janet’s growing concern about Luke’s weight gain had him coming in more regularly. “Call me after you see Coburn and let me know what’s going on,” Luka told Abby. “I will, be safe.” “I will. I love the three of you,” Luka said sweetly over the phone. Abby patted her growing belly and smiled. “We love you too.” “Bye.” “Bye.” Abby shut her cell phone and then attempted to figure out how she was going to change before the doctor’s appointment. She really didn’t want to go in her scrubs, and she didn’t want to wake up Luke either. It was really a predicament.
